This stereo was easy to install and quick to get up and running. I was able to link the system to my phone (Android) via Bluetooth immediately.

Pros: Bluetooth works (nearly) perfectly and the call quality through the car stereo was decent. Definitely made listening to my personal music in my car much easier.

Cons: Mostly due to my Android phone's Bluetooth software, the Bluetooth connection doesn't work perfectly. BUT that should improve with an OS upgrade. Other than that, great stereo!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My wife got the Alpine UTE-42BT for me for my birthday. I use my Samsung S4 and Rhapsody to listen to my music. I have been using an aux input and my OEM stereo was on its way out. I haven't used a cd in a long time so "mechless" seemed the way to go, especially in a Jeep. I installed it with the Metra 99-6504 kit (wanted the little cubby storage area even though its too small to fit much). Installation was straight forward. Instructions were right on the mark. Soldering the radio harness plug to the Jeep harness adapter took the longest part of it. I was excited enough about it, I installed it in the dark with a rechargeable flash light for light (like I was a teenager again!) All together maybe 1.5 to 2 hours. Granted this isn't my first time, it is simple to put in. Setting it up and pairing with my S4 was even easier. It sounds good and works smooth. Granted this is a "low budget" unit so it doesn't have a lot of bells a whistles but all I wanted was a unit that would play music from my phone. The appearance is rather subtle and not at all flashy, so it fits my Jeep well. Well worth the money!

Pros: Simple to use. Has a clock on the display even while playing music (such a simple thing that seems to get lost in so many other units) Pairs easily (works great with S4 running Rhapsody app) Great value for price!

Cons: No "toys" or bells and whistles (if that's your thing).

Wanted to update radio with bluetooth and get iPhone input. Seems to work fine. A little interesting getting all wires back in cavity. Too cold to see how it works with top down.

Pros: Fits, looks good enough, original unit slants backwards a little, this one is vertical. Updated features are exactly what I needed.

Cons: Sent wrong antenna adaptor first time, but sent another free. Didn't want to pay excessive for steering wheel control features, but, I really wish I had it for phone answer and hangup.

I just hooked my radio up myself with my husband and it was very easy to do by ourselves. Look up your car first to make sure you know where everything goes and most everything else is self explanatory. We had a couple of wires that weren't quite matching the old wires, but we called tech support and had that solved within minutes. Definitely worth the money.

Pros: plays my music on my phone. good sound

Cons: big difference in volume between bluetooth and tuner.

Excellent value for the money. The Bluetooth hook up is excellent. My wife doesn't mind talking to me in the car! Can't say the same about my old headset. Sound quality is great, much better then the Sony head unit that came with the car. Very happy!

Pros: Can control music on my Iphone 5 through the head unit, even Pandora. Bluetooth mic included. Great sound quality. Great value.

Cons: Voice Controls through Siri don't always work. Wiring Harness to plug into factory harness not included. (use to be included with all headunits) Mounting kit not included. (use to also be included)

A friend of mine wanted this for Christmas and asked for my advice.I looked it over and for the price it appeared to be a great value. I made sure he realized it did not play cds and he said thats fine he had converted all his CDs to mp3 on his ipod so we got it. When i installed it for him it seemed nice and does everything he wants and he says he can't hear the difference between an mp3 file and a CD so its perfect for the application

Pros: it has handsfree for your smartphone built in and will control an ipod through the usb jack

    Cons: no CD -ok sound

    Very impressed

Zach from Jacksonville, Texas on 1/4/2014

I love everything about this head unit. It provided the power for my speakers to sound much better. It's so easy to use, no intelligent life required. The red backlight looks good, in fact I've been distracted by it driving down the road at night. I chose this over the CDE unit because seriously, who used CD's anymore? I haven't tried the bluetooth or voice control yet, but the other feature are very convenient.

Easy to install with suggested harness. I really was impressed with the website auto selecting the required accessories so I didn't have to worry about getting later somewhere else. For someone who is willing to ditch CDs as their preferred media, its pretty flawless and works exactly as I expected via bluetooth or directly connected USB.

Pros: Very cool and easy to install and setup. Wife is very happy! Exactly what I was looking for.

Cons: No remote, but I don't really need one. It also didn't interface with my Honda's steering wheel buttons, but I didn't expect it to and its not a big deal breaker.

    Cons: No remote.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For what I paid for it, it is totally worth it. I was not looking for many options. Just I wanted the iPod computability because my factory deck did not have the option. I was not really planning on using my iPhone, but the Bluetooth connection sound amazing and it works with iTunes Radio just like it does with Pandora.

Pros: Bluetooth sounds fantastic. The over all sound is great. I still am only using my factory speakers, but the sound sooo much better now. The controls are super easy to use as well.

Cons: If there is a way to dim the display, I have not figured it out yet. However, it is not really a problem so I have not looked into too hard.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I mainly want to review this from an installation perspective first. Will review actual product quality later once I've had a chance to test it out with road noise and top down. Being a Jeep it was easy to take the console apart. Had no problems with taking the factory receiver out. The 10mm bolt behind the factory receiver was surprisingly easy to get out but I'm a female and have small hands so that could be it. The factory antenna is very short so when I pulled the receiver out it came loose as well but it was easy to tell where it had come from behind the glove box. Wire harness matched perfectly with factory harness wires so no confusion there. One thing that caused an issue, there's bracket in the rear of the receiver area that wouldn't allow the receiver to go all the way in. Looking at the info on Crutchfield now I see it says the REAR bracket will need to be unbolted or cut. I thought this was referring to taking out that notorious 10mm bolt which I already anticipated. Taking out that rear bracket was more work than I had time for. I was able to bend the bracket to get the receiver in. I'll go back later and take it out. Fit against console is good, no noticeable gaps. Once in sound was GREAT. Phone paired with receiver, making calls, and streaming music from phone to receiver in under 4 mins. Figured out functions without looking at manual in about 7 more mins. Total install time about 1.5 hrs because of rear bracket issue. All in all not bad and I'm happy.

Pros: Easy install, made specifically for digital media, bluetooth, easy to use functions, simple manual, so far great sound quality

Cons: Having to take out rear bracket but my fault for not understanding

I purchased this for my Accord to keep me entertained on a long commute for a new job. Within a few weeks, my wife asked me to get one for her car. I have an iPhone 4S, and it's a breeze to use with Bluetooth. When the phone rings, the music fades, the caller name comes up on the stereo, and I'm communicating.

Pros: Simple, easy, no minimal learning curve

Cons: Occasionally needs to be reconnected to the phone via Bluetooth. This may be due to both cars having the same stereo model.

This is the 5th Alpine head unit I've owned. I switch cars a lot. I haven't played a CD in years so this unit is perfect for me. The BT ties into my Galaxy S III perfect. The phone call quality is awesome. Keep in mind my install is in a Dodge diesel quad cab so ambient noise is a factor. Alpine has included echo cancelling or noise cancelling or both in the phone settings. The audio adjustments go way further than bass and treble. There are enough settings so that you can match the head unit to the speakers and the vehicle acoustics and your liking. I will be buying another one soon for my wife's Acura MDX. Only draw back is if you want front, rear and sub pre amp outputs this unit will make you select between rear or sub outputs. For me my amp has RCA output/pass through.

Pros: Price, quality, sound, awesome blue tooth phone integration

This is my second Crutchfield installation for my car and it went smoothly. The bluetooth is something I did not have before so it is a good upgrade.

    Pros: Bluetooth.

Cons: The microphone installation is a bit clunky in that the wire comes out the back of the unit and so you have to pinch the cord between the housing and the dash. The call quality for the person on the other end of the phone isn't great so it may be worth an upgrade to the microphone itself.

Good quality build, small power upgrade from the stock head unit definitely shows. Things sound much more robust. For a small head unit this thing is packed with plenty of options, Bluetooth, USB audio, and cellphone integration. Not a bad little unit.

Pros: Lots of options, good build, simple to use.

Cons: Red/Blue color scheme is a bit strange.

Despite the low price, this Alpine UTE-42BT has alot of practical features that even more expensive models like my Alpine 147-BT are lacking. I particularly enjoyed the ease of use of the Bluetooth audio and phone feautures. It is very easy and it performs greats everytime. The sound quality of mp3 and other compressed files is amazing fo someone that only liked CDs and WAV format with least compression. This radio does not disapoint in look either.

Pros: Esae of use, sounf of mp3 files and lots of cool features for the price.

Cons: I would have liked a case for the removable faceplate.

Very pleased with this deck. I'm mostly using Pandora via Bluetooth. I should've gotten a model with Pandora built in. It's a hassle to change stations, etc using the phone. You can pause and skip tracks using the deck, though! If you have a sub, this has ample power for the other spkrs in your system.

Pros: Great sound for under $100! Well built.

    Cons: None.

    2002 Subaru Impreza WRX
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installation went smoothly enough. I had to remove the decorative bezel to get it to fit in my dash opening (on a '02 Subaru WRX), but this was the only minor glitch. Interface is reasonably intuitive, has a useful and mostly obvious set of controls, and is not distractingly flashy. It generally seems to do reasonable things when you guess at pushing buttons. Although it does play from iDevices just fine via Bluetooth or USB , it does not support AAC audio files (the format Apple uses for the iTunes music store) *when they're on flash drives*. This may be an edge case, but it's disappointing. You can pair up to 5 bluetooth devices with this, but switching from one to another is not intuitive (unless I'm missing something), which could get annoying when you and your SO both have smartphones. Ideally each bluetooth device would be a separate source device you could iterate through with the Source button. The owner's manual is only provided as a PDF on a CD, with a short booklet in paper form to get you started. They're both mediocre translations, but this seems to be a problem endemic to the industry. I'm giving this a middling "coolness factor" rating. Trying too hard to be cool would be bad.

    Pros: Straightforward interface Good price

Cons: No support for AAC files on flash drives No easy way to switch between active bluetooth source devices

    Ditch the CD's !!

It's bluetooth ready and was able to pair it to my phone for handsfree talking during my commute to and from work. I can listen to music from my flash drive via the front USB port. Stuck in a 4GB flash drive in there with about 500 songs. Extremely easy to navigate which folders and songs to listen to but i usually just shuffle all anyway but you can also shuffle individual folders if you like. Also, if i want to stream music from my phone i can just plug into the aux input. I don't miss having a CD player at all. So much better not having CD's laying around the car and trying to decide which one to listen to and change CD's while driving. I think this receiver takes full advantage of the car's factory speakers capabilities much better than the stock radio. I can actually crank up the volume pretty high without the sound getting too distorted. I did kinda wish it came with a remote control standard so i can control it when i'm napping in my car but that is the only flaw i can think of.

Pros: Easy to install. Great sound. Easy to control. Bluetooth ready works great. Love the front USB and Aux inputs, no need for cd's!

Cons: Doesn't come with a remote control

    So easy to install.

Pros: Looks great. Performs great. Has a lot of features.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall I am very happy with the Alpine UTE-42BT. It has exceeded my expectations and would not hesitate to buy or recommend this radio to someone else. Keep in mind I am putting this radio in a 1990 Chevy Suburban and to my knowledge the speakers are stock. This radio sound great out of the box (a bit flat but it is set to "Flat" in the EQ presets). The sound quality is far better than the stock radio. Going through the EQ settings "Rock" is probably the most balanced for all types of music. Ease of use is high but the manual is a bit lacking in explanation of the configurations. After fiddling for a few minutes however most functions can be figured out quickly. Some issues I have with the radio: Blue and red do not mix well together. I have a redish interior and the big blue source button really kills the aesthetic. Keep it all one color or add some RGB LEDs and let the user decide. I am having issues with the microphone and when on calls the other person cannot hear me as if the mic is not working. There are two ports on the radio for mic input and I have tried both as well as turning up the gain. It may just be my phone (Galaxy Nexus running custom 4.1.1 software) Only a three band EQ. Even though the EQ works fine for me I feel in the digital music age and how small and powerful electronics are a 5 band EQ is pretty trivial and should be available at this price point

Pros: Great sound quality and huge improvement in my 25yo truck. Easy to use, lots of features BT works great for playing music, basic player features work perfect on my Android phone.

Cons: Mic not working with my phone Blue and red leds clash 3 band EQ

    I'm happy!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I used to install stereos for a living, and time and again I would see old cars come in with working aftermarket decks, and they were almost always an Alpine. They work, they are reliable (My 7 year old Alpine has had the face removed and replaced every day for all those years without a single glitch), buttons feel good, and the interface is straightforward without a bunch of crap you will use once and never use again (like "concert hall" EQ settings). Having a single control knob makes way more sense than only buttons, because you don't have to look down while driving. Anyways, this deck is no exception. For the price, you get decent power, enough of inputs and outputs including sub control if you go that route. Bluetooth phone calls and music streaming (once you try it, you never want to go back), and some other stuff if you can afford an Iphone. I'm happy with the deck so far. The only complaint I have, and it's the same complaint I have with my other 7 year old Alpine deck, is the Ipod interface is still pretty clunky and occasionally irritating. The Ipod interface is an excellent tool as designed, and to restrict the user to using only the Alpine digital readout to navigate menus is dumb. The deck should still allow you to physically make choices on the actual IPod when desired. The other little irritant with it is there is a little bit of software code that goes into your Ipod and automatically switches on the repeat at end of selection setting. Great deck .

Pros: Reliable, well built, good power, room for expansion, great options via Blue Tooth, usb, or aux input. Main control knob, not button. everything you need, very little you don't.

    Cons: ipod interface is lame

Great sound and a cool, Classic Alpine display appearance. This is simplicity and functionality all in one package. Fits well in a 1985 300DT. The instruction sheet from Crutchfield and pre-purchase online confirmation that the receiver would fit was a great help. I installed this in my 17 year old daughter's 2000 Dodge Dakota. All she needed was a radio and something that would play music from her iPhone. This was the perfect unit. CD's and auxiliary cables are yesterday's news. The bluetooth connection was the perfect solution. She can stream her music from her phone and even talk on the phone with the included microphone. And she can control her iPhone from the head unit, meaning there's less fumbling with stuff to play her music; always a good thing. Installation was a snap. Between the wiring diagram in Alpine's manual and the wiring diagram that Crutchfield sent with their harness, matching up the wiring was a breeze. Following Crutchfield's Master Sheet made the actual installation go smoothly, too. Needless to say, I'm very happy with this unit and, more importantly, so is my daughter.

Pros: Good sound, good looks, detachable face, it's an Alpine

Cons: The operating instructions could be clearer, but they aren't impossible to figure out. If the instructions were clearer, I'd have given "Ease of Use" 5 stars instead of 4.

AND, new technologies to play with like hands free and bluetooth - all for a couple hundred bucks and 4 or 6 hours of install/pregramming! One tip, if you can, find a youtube video showing you how to disassemble your cars dash - it saved me a lot of time. And support at Crutchfied was top notch!

Very disappointed with this products sound quality. I purchased it for the convenience of not having to deal with CD's in the car, with hands off phone as a bonus. To my surprise, the sound quality from both the Bluetooth and USB connections are far inferior to the CD receiver it replaced. Most disturbing is Crutchfield's lack of response to my questions. I have been waiting over two weeks for a response to my question concerning how to utilize the receiver ATD converter to improve sound quality. So much for lifetime product support. This will be my last Crutchfield purchase. The implied value to pay top dollar is not there.

The Alpine UTE-42BT is an excellent head unit for the money! The sound quality is great and Bluetooth works very well. I bought this unit mainly for the USB input. I have a very long commute and CD's became a pain. Bluetooth is a plus. All controls work well but my only complaint would be the volume knob. The volume knob is also used to control file search on a thumb drive, sometimes when I reach to adjust volume I inadvertently push the button. This usually happens because of smooth California Highways! Trivial as it is it has happened quite a bit and then requires you to take your eyes off the road and see why the volume is not changing. Maybe its just me and I need to get used to it. Other than that I have no complaints and would recommend it to anyone.

Pros: Front USB input, Bluetooth with streaming audio, NO CD's, Alpine quality.

Cons: Sometimes difficult to change volume without inadvertently pushing search feature of the volume knob (on bumpy roads). Only 2 Pre Amp outputs.

    Awesome budget media receiver

Wagonbacker9 from Menomonee Falls WI on 4/18/2013

After installing Alpine's CDE-141 receiver in my sisters car last week I finally decided that the amp (JL 250/1) and subwoofer (elemental designs under the middle seat) I've been carrying in my Tahoe deserved to have some signal put their way. I'd planned on putting a double DIN DVD player in, but decided the iPad will suffice to entertain the growing child in the back seat and I'd rather just stick in a budget stereo. Seeing as I haven't used a CD since I had an aux input retrofitted into my car a couple years back, it only made sense to go with a CD-less unit. For a budget unit, this thing is FANTASTIC. It includes freq center, high and low pass crossovers, and while not overly powerful, the internal amp is perfectly serviceable for most listeners needs. I have Alpine Type E (read: CHEAP component set) 6.5s up front, and stock speakers in the back and I am THRILLED with the quality for my minimal investment. I've had $2500 stereo systems, and while thats clearly not what this is, for the money spent, its WAY more.

Pros: Great feature list for a unit in this price range

    Cons: Remember: No CD player!

First off, Crutchfield does a great job of giving just about everything you need to install a new stereo, except I needed to buy some crimps and crimpers to join the harnesses up. No big deal, once I'd crimped 2 wires, I had the hang of it again... For the money, this head unit is great. However, rather than my previous experience with a CDA-9812RB years ago, sound quality isn't a massive improvement. Radio reception is much better than the factory Shaker 500, and it does sound better in general, but you can see Alpine really scrimped with the amp power. That 9812 was in the last of the 60wx4 RMS and you really could tell. Anyway, enough reminiscing. Bluetooth Audio is great, it's very easy to connect to it as well. The front USB is ok, but I don't really like having a stick poking out of the front. It's a very good starting point though, and I'm sure I'll be using Crutchfield again for new speakers and something to replace though terrible Shaker 500 subwoofers...

I purchased this head unit to replace an old one that came in my used 98 Cherokee when I bought it. The install was quick and painless just spliced the wiring harness in and plugged in the radio. After the install I was anxious to see if this unit would pair with my Google Nexus 4, as this is the main reason I purchased it.. Anyways I turned on Bluetooth and paired to the receiver (dont forget you have to confirm pairing on the unit) and immediately ANY media I played on my phone was going through my car stereo, I tried Google Play Music, Spotify, Pandora, and watched youtube videos all without an issue, I made a phone call and it sounded great. I have no complaints about this unit other than.... tag data doesn't seem to make it to the head unit for example I play a song by the Beatles and choose to view artist on the head unit it just says "artist" on the display nothing happens, maybe I missed a step so I will go over this further. Sidenote: To the reviewer below me or anyone else that reads his review I am and Android Developer, and although the framework maybe similar ensure that you are running Android STOCK and not HTC Sense with Android or Samsung Touchwiz etc I don't believe those things are supported as it is not Stock Android and there may be where your issues lie.

Pros: Easy to setup. Menu navigation is intuitive ie theres a back button. Easily pairs with STOCK ANDROID 4.2.2. BT Sounds just as good as plugging directly into the AUX. PARAMETRIC EQ and HPF are a huge bonus for my small speakers.

Cons: Metatag data not displayed =[ (this may be an configuration issue)

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this Alpine unit to replace my factory Ford Radio. I don't like Cassette or CD in my autos. When I found this, I thought it was the answer to my prayers. It had hands free support for Android and iPhone. I specifically wanted it for listening to Pandora while I drive and the hands free support. The install went perfect in about 15 minutes. It only took that long because I took my time and hid the microphone wire. The Crutchfield hardware made this easy breezy. I didn't cut any of the factory wiring....then the real fun began. I paired it with my Android phone and it connected seamlessly. I made/received a phone call on it without a hitch. It downloaded my phone book into the head unit with no problems. The Pandora feature...well...doesn't work! The minute I switch to Bluetooth Mode it attempts to play music from my music player on my Android Device. If I manually kill the app then turn on Pandora, it immediately brings up the music player app again. I tried this on 2 Android phones with the same issue. If I delete the music on my Android device and force close the app...it opens it up again and says "Searching". Apparently Alpine has not fixed this issue. I searched Google and found many articles on this issue. I called Crutchfield Tech support. They were very cool and helpful, but in the end, their answer was, "It varies with the Android phone you are using." Sorry, I don't buy that. The hype on the model states this: Enjoy Pandora® control...

Pros: Very nice lay out with menus. Nice easy to read display. Many high end features found on high dollar models. Sound quality is very good. The work around for pandora is to use the headphone jack of your phone and AUX IN on the radio....losing BT capabilities of course.

Cons: No Pandora support for Android even though it states it will work via Blue Tooth. It does not. Alpine blames the phone, the phone manufacturer blames Alpine, and Crutchfield is unaware of any issues. False advertisement on the Bluetooth Alpine! They of course will not tell you which phones do work with this model. The volume knob feels really cheap.

I've had a few higher end Alpines such as the CDA-9887 and iDA-x305 and even the budget friendly CDE-121. Of all these, I would have to say the UTE-42BT is up there in terms of value. It's hard to beat the price for a quality built head unit with working bluetooth system. Before this unit, I was using the Pioneer MVH-P8200BT and besides expandability, it doesn't hold a candle to this unit. The microphone is clearer, more user friendly interface and bluetooth audio. Unlike other units that have bluetooth audio, the Alpine system allows hi-rate bluetooth audio so it doesn't sound like 128kbps audio. My only real gripe besides expandability would have to be the blue button to change the source. I feel it's too bright at night but it might be okay to others.

Pros: Hi-rate Bluetooth Audio, Simple Interface, Excellent Build Quality

    Cons: Lack of Expandability

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The Alpine UTE-42BT features built-in Bluetooth (ver. 3.0) technology. The head unit's built-in Bluetooth allows you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.5 (Hands Free Profile), HSP (Head Set Profile), OPP 1.1 (Object Push Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.2 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.3 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Alpine UTE-42BT.

Pairing: The Alpine UTE-42BT can be paired to up to five Bluetooth enabled mobile devices (only one device can be used at a time)

Hands-Free Communication: The head unit supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone (including iPhone & Android). The controls of the KDC-BT555U can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also includes an external microphone, so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers.

    • Receiving Calls: The Alpine UTE-42BT provides a couple ways to answer your phone calls without picking up your mobile phone. Incoming calls are announced by a caller ring tone through your vehicle's speakers (music will be muted) & a Caller ID message across your Alpine head unit's display.
      • Manual Answer: Manually answer an incoming call by pressing the "Phone" button on your Alpine head unit.
      • Automatic Answer: Set the Alpine head unit to answer the incoming call automatically; when a call is received, it is answered automatically after approximately 5 seconds.
      • Call Waiting: If a second call is received during a current call, you can have the first caller wait momentarily while you take the second call. When you are finished with one call, you can switch to the other.
    • Placing Calls: The Alpine UTE-42BT provides a variety of functions for placing a phone call without using your mobile phone. The Alpine UTE-42BT features full phone book access, call history, voice tag dialing, and redial with compatible phones.
      • Voice Dialing: If you have a voice-dial capable phone, you can dial a phone contact by simply speaking the name of your contact.
      • Phonebook (with ABC search): Up to 1,000 entries (3 telephone numbers for each name) can be downloaded from your compatible mobile phone. You can select the first 3 call letters (ABC) to search for a desired name in your phonebook.
      • Preset Dialing: You can assign phone numbers that you dial frequently to presets (1-6) for quick recall. You can assign up to six frequently called phone numbers. A total of 18 phone numbers can be stored in the preset memory (6 numbers for each mobile phone paired).
      • Call History: The previously dialed, received, or missed numbers (20 each) can be retrieved and dialed from memory.
Note: During a conversation, you can initiate a transfer of audio between your mobile phone and your car's speakers.  mute the

External Microphone with Noise Cancellation: The included external microphone (with visor-clip) allows you to speak to the other party on the telephone call hands-free, while the other party's voice is played through your car stereo speakers. The external microphone is tuned and engineered to reduce noise interference and feedback. This allows optimal placement in your car, for the best possible sound quality. You can adjust the microphone's volume level; and even mute the microphone, so your voice will not be heard by the caller. The external microphone measures 0.5625" (diameter) x 1.625" (deep); and features an attached 13' cable terminated by a right-angle male 3.5mm connector.

Wireless Audio Streaming (w/ Metadata Display): The Alpine UTE-42BT also supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth enabled audio player or smartphone (including iPhone & Android). The UTE-42BT will be able to control basic playback functions of your Bluetooth device's stored music; such as Play/Pause, Skip Next/Previous, Fast Forward/Rewind and Random/Repeat. The head unit will also display your stored music's song information; such as Artist name and Song/Album title. The UTE-42BT also supports audio streaming of music apps downloaded on your smartphone with metadata display and limited control. Advanced music control of your music apps will still need be done via your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone. When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Siri Eyes Free Control: When paired and connected with an iPhone 4S or 5/5C/5S via Bluetooth (not USB), the Alpine UTE-42BT has the ability to access Siri through its front-panel controls and external microphone. Simply press-and-hold down on the head unit's Answer Button to engage Siri and use the included microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the UTE-42BT and its microphone. The head unit's display will only indicate hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the Alpine UTE-42BT; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device).

Note: You can ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone 4S/5/5C/5S. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.

Bluetooth Sound Quality Adjustments: You can customize the sound of your Bluetooth hands-free experience to fit your own preferences. You can adjust the UTE-42BT's mic gain, phone output, & ring tone volume. If that's not enough, there are 5 sound quality settings to choose from to get the balance just right for you. This flexibility will make your phone calls a pleasurable experience.

    • Volume Adjustments: You can emphasize or weaken the volume level of phone call, the ring tone, and the microphone input to fit your own preference. The Phone Talk Level, Ring Tone, & Mic Gain are all adjustable between -5 to + 5 dB.
    • Sound Types: This unit provides 5 methods to improve the sound quality of your calls. You can choose the type according to your own preference - Type 1 (standard mode), Type 2 (enhances noise reduction), Type 3 (enhances echo-cancellation), Type 4 (enhances both noise reduction & echo cancellation), & Type 5 (weakens both noise reduction & echo-cancellation).

Speaker Output: You can select which car speaker outputs the audio from your Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone/device.

    • All: The audio will be output from all of the speakers in the car
    • F-L: The sound is only output from the front left speaker.
    • F-R: The sound is only output from the front right speaker.
    • F-LR: The sound is output from the front left and front right speakers.

    iPod/iPhone Integration

iPod/iPhone USB 1-Wire Connection: You can connect your iPod or iPhone to the head unit's front-panel USB port using the Alpine KCU-445i iPod/iPhone cable (500KCU445I, sold separately) or the iPod/USB cable that came with your iPod/iPhone to get access to all of your iPod/iPhone's stored music, right from the head unit. If you have an iPod nano (7th gen), iPod touch (5th gen), or iPhone 5; use the Lighting-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect to the head unit. Using either cable allows audio playback, music navigation, information display, and charging of select iPod/iPhone models from the UTE-42BT.

    • Audio Playback w/ DAC Bypass: The Alpine UTE-42BT supports audio playback of music, podcast, and audiobook files stored on your iPod or iPhone; as well as music apps downloaded on your Apple device. The USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's large music libraries to be loaded instantly to the Alpine head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 1-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 105dB.
    • Music Navigation: You can choose to control the iPod/iPhone from the head unit or from your iPod/iPhone's clickwheel or touchscreen (App Direct Mode).
      • Head Unit: The Alpine UTE-42BT lets you navigate the stored music on your iPod/iPhone by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Genre, Podcast, Composer, Audiobook, or Genius Mix. You can then search these categories alphabetically. For especially big music libraries, the Percentage Search function uses the preset buttons for quick jumps to specific parts of the list (Preset 1: 0-6%, Preset 2: 17-32%, Preset 3: 33-49%, Preset 4: 50%-66%, Preset 5: 67-82%, Preset 6: 83-100% of the song library). The head unit also offers three Shuffle playback modes (Album/Song/All) and one Repeat mode (song).
      • App Direct Mode: In App Direct Mode, you can navigate the stored music on your iPod/iPhone from its clickwheel or touchscreen. You can also listen to your favorite music apps (such as Pandora, iHeartRadio, SiriusXM, Last.fm, Rhapsody, & Slacker) from your iPhone (iOS 3.0+) through the Alpine head unit. Basic playback functions, such as Play/Pause and Previous/Next Track are available from the head unit. You will continue to use your iPhone's touchscreen to navigate advanced functions of your music apps. Not all apps will be compatible with this mode. Access to your iPhone's downloaded applications will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet.
    • Information Display: The UTE-42BT will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information when you are controlling your iPod/iPhone from the Alpine head unit or the Apple devices clickwheel/touchscreen. The head unit will display Track number, Elapsed playing time, Artist name, Song title, and Album label. The unit will also display station identification and song/artist information from select music apps.
    • iPod/iPhone Charging: While connected and the ignition switch is set to ACC or ON, the head unit's USB connection will power and charge your iPod/iPhone. If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it. This unit does not charge the iPad.

    Audio Section

CEA-2006 Compliant: The specifications given by Alpine for the built-in amplifier comply with the CEA-2006 mobile amplifier power testing and measurement standards from the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association). All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CEA-2006 logo on their product.

    • CEA-2006 Power Rating: 18 watts x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Max Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels

4ch/2V Preamp Outputs: The Alpine UTE-42BT features two pair of 2.0-volt preamp outputs. The unit's rear preamp outputs can be configured as fading rear-channel outputs or a non-fading subwoofer outputs with a low-pass filter, phase adjustment, and output level control.

Note: When an external amplifier is connected sound quality can be improved by stopping the power supply of the built-in amplifier.

Head Unit Power Pack (optional): Add the KTP-445 (500KTP445, sold separately) Head Unit Power Pack to deliver 45 watts x 4-channel RMS of power. The KTP-445 is compact enough to install behind the Alpine digital media receiver. It plugs in-line with the head unit's wiring harness, so you don't even need additional wires.

Subwoofer Control: When the non-fading subwoofer preamp output is activated, you can adjust the subwoofer's volume, low-pass filter, & phase.

    • Volume: There are two volume (system) modes for the unit's subwoofer output.
      • System 1: Subwoofer level changes according to the main volume setting.
      • System 2: Subwoofer level change is different from the main volume setting (0-15); even at low volume settings, the subwoofer is still audible.
    • Low Pass Filter: The unit's subwoofer output low-pass filter can be set to 60Hz, 80Hz, 120Hz, 160Hz, or Off (through).
    • Subwoofer Phase: The subwoofer output phase can be set to Normal (0°) or Reverse (180°).

High Pass Filter: The Alpine head unit is equipped with a high-pass filter for its speaker-level output and front-channel preamp output (when activated). You can set the unit's high-pass filter to 60Hz, 80Hz, 120Hz, 160Hz, or Off (through).

    3-Band EQ
    Frequency Q-Factor Level
    Bass 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, or 120Hz   Wide 0.5, Medium 1.0, Medium 1.5, or Narrow. 2.0 -7 to +7 (+/-14dB in 2dB steps)
    Midrange 500Hz, 1.0kHz, 1.5kHz, or 2.5kHz Wide 0.75, Medium 1.0, Medium 1.25, or Narrow 1.5 -7 to +7 (+/-14dB in 2dB steps)
    Treble 7.5kHz, 10kHz, 12.5kHz, or 15kHz Wide 0.75 or Narrow 1.25 -7 to +7 (+/-14dB in 2dB steps)

Note: The units stores independent EQ settings for each source (Tuner, Aux, USB, iPod, and Bluetooth).

Loudness: Loudness introduces a special low and high frequency emphasis at low listening levels to compensate for the ear's decreased sensitivity to bass and treble sound at low volume.

Media Xpander: Alpine's exclusive Media Xpander is engineered to bring out the musical details lost in compressed media, and it is adjustable per source to get the most out of your digital audio media. The Media Expander makes vocals or instruments sound distinct regardless of the music source. The FM radio, USB, iPod/iPhone, Bluetooth, and Aux-input will be able to reproduce the music more clearly even in vehicles with a lot of road noise.

Source Volume Level: The output level of each source is individually adjustable from -14 to + 14 dB.

    Display Features

Detachable Face: The unit's front-panel is detachable to deter theft (no face case included). An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Text Display: The digital media receiver will display the folder name, the file name, and the tag information, while playing a USB device loaded with MP3/WMA music files.

Text Scroll: This unit can scroll the text information of MP3/WMA files, folder names, and tags. There are two Text Scroll settings.

1.888.955.6000 would be the number to call. That should get you directly with the Advisor group. [ Jeff  Dec 14, 2013 ]  Staff
Thanks for your question Jerry. Installing an aftermarket receiver in your Ridgeline would require some custom modification work. I'd recommend reaching out to an Advisor for the full details and to discuss compatibility with your factory gear. [ Jeff  Dec 13, 2013 ]  Staff
You will loose the use of the factory CD player when installing an aftermarket receiver. [ Jeff  Dec 09, 2013 ]  Staff
The Aux Input would be for connecting an external audio source (like an MP3 player). If you purchased the product from Crutchfield, feel free to contact our Tech Support team. They can walk you through the settings on the product and see if there may be a fix. Our toll-free Tech Support number is printed on your invoice, and is also available under the "My Orders" tab in the "My Account" section of our website. If you did not purchase the unit from Crutchfield, then you may want to contact the manufacturer. You can also post your question in our forums: http://community.crutchfield.com. Thanks for your question Greg. The factory radio plug will not fit directly into this unit. However, we do have harnesses for most vehicles that will allow you to plug into the factory wiring. Feel free to reach out to an Advisor by phone or chat for more details on the install for your vehicle. [ Jeff  Nov 22, 2013 ]  Staff
Yes, I conect my iPone 4 via Bluetooth and play Pandora & I hart radio. [ TED  Nov 23, 2013 ]
Yes, with my iPhone 4s it does over Bluetooth or USB. I have had problem with iHeart radio though. I think that is App programing though and not the stereo. It always cuts out after the first song. But the Bluetooth works great and Pandora sound perfect on the receiver. [ BARTON  Nov 23, 2013 ]

    Yes, I listen to Pandora daily. [ AUSTIN  Nov 22, 2013 ]
Yes. If you pair it via Bluetooth or plug in via Aux it will play just about any audio on your device through the car speakers. Great unit too! The Bluetooth is solid and the hands free talk is exceptional. [ JOHN  Nov 22, 2013 ]
Pandora from phone app to radio via blue tooth works great!! [ SHAUN  Nov 22, 2013 ]
