Our take on the Alpine UTE-52BT

by Jon Paulette
Alpine

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Smartphone-friendly

If your smartphone is the hub of your communication and entertainment needs, Alpine's UTE-52BT digital media receiver will make an ideal travel companion. This receiver works with both iPhone® and Android™ models, so you can listen to stored music or stream Pandora® and other Internet radio apps with your phone. Built-in Bluetooth® connectivity lets you enjoy your tunes, plus hands-free conversations.

App Direct gives you basic control and operation of your favorite iPhone apps, but if your iPhone has Siri® Eyes Free capability, you can do even more. Using only the sound of your voice, anything you and Siri can do on your phone can be done using the UTE-52BT. All of your digital music will sound great, thanks to the built-in 24-bit digital audio converter.

Alpine UTE-52BT Digital Media Receiver

Alpine's TuneIt app makes it easy to take full advantage of this receiver's built-in sound adjustment capabilities.

TuneIt® your way

Alpine's TuneIt® 2.0 app gives you the ability to fine-tune your car's sound. Just download the free app onto your iPhone or Android smartphone and create a profile including your car and sound system information. The app will help you your adjust the receiver's 9-band parametric EQ, frequency filters, Media Xpander, and other sound settings for your specific vehicle, or you can use the settings already created for your car in Alpine's ever-growing vehicle database. Even cooler, you can check out settings that other users have created for your specific vehicle on Facebook.

If you're into bass, you can use Bass Engine SQ tuning to optimize your car's bass performance, and customize its five bass profiles with TuneIt.

If you're planning on adding an amp or two to your system, the UTE-52BT features three sets of 2-volt preamp outputs, so you have plenty of options. You can then make further adjustments by updating the settings in your TuneIt car profile.

Everything you need

With the handy front USB port, you can plug in a flash drive that you've loaded up with music, or connect your iPod® or iPhone to listen to music. You can also connect a portable MP3 player or other sound source to the front auxiliary input. The UTE-52BT works with SiriusXM's SXV200 tuner (sold separately), making it easy to tune into satellite radio's in-depth music, news, and entertainment  programming wherever you drive.

In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Alpine stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the receiver. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The Alpine UTE-52BT features built-in Bluetooth (ver. 2.1+EDR) technology. The head unit's built-in Bluetooth allows you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.5 (Hands Free Profile), HSP (Head Set Profile), OPP 1.1 (Object Push Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.2 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.4 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Alpine UTE-52BT.

SPP (Secure Simple Pairing): With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the Alpine UTE-52BT without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. When a registered Bluetooth device is in close proximity to the receiver, the auto connection function automatically pairs the two units. You can register up to three Bluetooth-enabled devices with the Alpine head unit (only one device can be used at a time).

Hands-Free Communication: The head unit supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone (including iPhone & Android). The controls of the UTE-52BT can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also includes an external microphone, so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. During a conversation, you can initiate a transfer of audio between your mobile phone and your car's speakers.

    • Receiving Calls: The Alpine UTE-52BT provides a couple ways to answer your phone calls without picking up your mobile phone. Incoming calls are announced by a caller ring tone through your vehicle's speakers (music will be muted) & a Caller ID message across your Alpine head unit's display.
      • Manual Answer: Manually answer an incoming call by pressing the "Phone" button on your Alpine head unit.
      • Automatic Answer: Set the Alpine head unit to answer the incoming call automatically; when a call is received, it is answered automatically after approximately 5 seconds.
      • Call Waiting: If a second call is received during a current call, you can have the first caller wait momentarily while you take the second call. When you are finished with one call, you can switch to the other.
    • Placing Calls: The Alpine UTE-52BT provides a variety of functions for placing a phone call without using your mobile phone. The Alpine UTE-52BT features full phone book access, call history, voice tag dialing, and redial with compatible phones.
      • Voice Dialing: If you have a voice-dial capable phone, you can dial a phone contact by simply speaking the name of your contact.
      • Phonebook (with ABC search): Up to 1,000 contacts (5 telephone numbers for each name) can be downloaded from your compatible mobile phone. You can select the first 3 call letters (ABC) to search for a desired name in your phonebook.
      • Preset Dialing: You can assign phone numbers that you dial frequently to presets (1-6) for quick recall. You can assign up to six frequently called phone numbers. A total of 18 phone numbers can be stored in the preset memory (6 numbers for each mobile phone paired).
      • Call History: The previously dialed, received, or missed numbers (20 each) can be retrieved and dialed from memory.
Note: The external microphone is tuned and engineered to reduce noise interference and feedback. This allows optimal placement in your car, for the best possible sound quality. You can adjust the microphone's volume level; and even mute the microphone, so your voice will not be heard by the caller. The external microphone measures 0.5625" (diameter) x 1.625" (deep); and features an attached 13' cable terminated by a right-angle male 3.5mm connector.

Audio Streaming (w/ Advanced Music Navigation): The Alpine UTE-52BT can stream music from your Bluetooth A2DP/AVRCP mobile device. Not only can it control & stream your music through Bluetooth, it can process your music using its built-in DSP Sound Expansion to ensure you get the best sound. In addition to basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip, Random/Repeat), the UTE-52BT provides a Search List of your stored music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Genre, etc.. (AVRCP 1.4 phones only). The head unit will also display your stored music's song information; such as Artist name & Song/Album title. The UTE-52BT even supports audio streaming of music apps on your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone with limited control and song/artist information. You will continue to use your Bluetooth enabled smartphone to control advanced music navigation.

Note: When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Siri Eyes Free Control: When paired and connected with an iPhone 4S or 5/5C/5S via Bluetooth (not USB), the Alpine UTE-52BT has the ability to access Siri through its front-panel controls and external microphone. Simply press-and-hold down on the head unit's Answer Button to engage Siri and use the included microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the UTE-52BT and its microphone. The head unit's display will only indicate hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the Alpine UTE-52BT; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device).

Note: You can ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone 4S/5/5C/5S. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.

Bluetooth Sound Quality Adjustments: You can customize the sound of your Bluetooth hands-free experience to fit your own preferences. You can adjust the UTE-52BT's mic gain, phone output, & ring tone volume. If that's not enough, there are 5 sound quality settings to choose from to get the balance just right for you. This flexibility will make your phone calls a pleasurable experience.

    • Volume Adjustments: You can emphasize or weaken the volume level of phone call, the ring tone, and the microphone input to fit your own preference. The Phone Talk Level, Ring Tone, & Mic Gain are all adjustable between -5 to + 5 dB.
    • Sound Types: This unit provides 5 methods to improve the sound quality of your calls. You can choose the type according to your own preference - Type 1 (standard mode), Type 2 (enhances noise reduction), Type 3 (enhances echo-cancellation), Type 4 (enhances both noise reduction & echo cancellation), & Type 5 (weakens both noise reduction & echo-cancellation).

Speaker Output: You can select which car speaker outputs the audio from your Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone/device.

    • All: The audio will be output from all of the speakers in the car
    • F-L: The sound is only output from the front left speaker.
    • F-R: The sound is only output from the front right speaker.
    • F-LR: The sound is output from the front left and front right speakers.

    USB + AUX Playback

Front-Panel USB Port: The Alpine UTE-52BT features a front-panel USB (type-A) port that is hidden behind a flip-out cover. The USB port enables connection of a portable USB mass-storage class (MSC) devices; such as select Android smartphones (Froyo/Gingerbread OS only), portable digital audio players, or USB thumbdrives. The USB port supports audio playback and control of MP3/WMA audio files stored on these portable USB mass-storage class devices. USB portable audio players that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the digital media receiver's USB port (max. 1A), and the vehicle's ignition switch is set to ACC or On.

    • 30-Pin Dock Connector: If you have an older iPod/iPhone with a 30-pin dock connector, you can use Apline's KCU-445i dock connector-to-USB cable (500KCU445I, sold separately) or the dock connector-to-USB cable that comes with your Apple device to connect your iPod/iPhone to the UTE-52BT.
    • Lightning Connector: If you have a newer iPod/iPhone with the Lightning-connector, you can use the Lightning-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect your iPod/iPhone to the UTE-52BT.

Note: The head unit's USB connection provides 1A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position (if your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it).

Music Playback w/ DAC Bypass: The Alpine head unit supports audio playback of stored music and music apps on your iPod or iPhone. The USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's stored music and music apps to be loaded instantly to the head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 24-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 105dB.  You can operate your connected iPod/iPhone via the head unit's front-panel controls or from your Apple device's clickwheel/touchscreen.

The head unit also offers three Shuffle playback modes (Album/Song/All) and one Repeat mode (song). Newer iPhones with iOS 6.0+ allow you to continue to use your Apple device's touchscreen to access music apps; older iPod/iPhone devices will be locked during connection.
    • App Direct: In App Direct Mode, you can navigate the stored music on your iPod/iPhone device through its clickwheel or touchscreen; as well as music apps on an iPhone (iOS 3.0+). Basic playback functions, such as Play/Pause and Previous/Next Track are still available from the head unit. Not all apps will be compatible with this mode.
Note: Access to your iPhone's downloaded applications will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet.

Song/Artist Information: The Alpine digital media receiver will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information in Head Unit or App Direct Mode. The UTE-52BT will display Track Number, Elapsed Time, Artist Name, Song/Album Title, and Station Identification for stored music and music apps.

CEA-2006 Compliant: The specifications given by Alpine for the built-in amplifier comply with the CEA-2006 mobile amplifier power testing and measurement standards from the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association). All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CEA-2006 logo on their product.

    • CEA-2006 Power Rating: 18 watts x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Max Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels
Note: Add the KTP-445 (500KTP445, sold separately) Head Unit Power Pack to deliver 45 watts x 4-channel RMS of power. The KTP-445 is compact enough to install behind the Alpine digital media receiver. It plugs in-line with the head unit's wiring harness, so you don't even need additional wires.

6ch/2V Preamp Outputs: The UTE-52BT has three sets of 2-Volt RCA pre-outs (Front/Rear/Sub) for connection of external amplifiers. The unit's front & rear preamp output can be faded, while the subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. When an external amplifier is connected sound quality can be improved by stopping the power supply of the built-in amplifier.

Subwoofer Control: When the non-fading subwoofer preamp output is activated, you can adjust the subwoofer's volume, low-pass filter, & phase.

    • Volume: There are two volume (system) modes for the unit's subwoofer output. System 1 (subwoofer level changes according to the main volume setting) or System 2 ( subwoofer level change is different from the main volume setting (0-15); even at low volume settings, the subwoofer is still audible.
    • Low Pass Filter: The unit's subwoofer output low-pass filter can be set to 60, 80, 120, 160 Hz, or Off (through).
    • Subwoofer Phase: The subwoofer output phase can be set to Normal (0°) or Reverse (180°).

High Pass Filter (for Front & Rear): The Alpine head unit is equipped with a high-pass filter for its speaker-level output and front-channel preamp output (when activated). You can set the unit's high-pass filter to 20Hz, 25Hz, 31.5Hz, 40Hz, 50Hz, 63Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 125Hz, 160Hz, 200Hz, or Off (through). The slope of the high pass filter can be set to 6, 12, 18, or 24 dB/oct.

Preset/9-Band EQ: You can select from 11 different EQ presets to get the best sound from all your sources. You can choose from Flat, Pops, Rock, News, Jazz, Electric Dance, Hip-Hop, Easy Listening, Country, Classical, or User. Using the head unit's 9-Band EQ (in User mode), you can modify the EQ settings to create a response curve more appealing to your personal taste.

    Band Frequency Q-Width Level
    1 20 Hz - 100 Hz 3.0, 4.0, or 5.0 -7 to +7 dB
    2 63 Hz - 315 Hz
    3 125 Hz - 500 Hz
    4 250 Hz - 1 kHz
    5 500 Hz - 2 kHz
    6 1 kHz - 4 kHz
    7 2 kHz- 7.2 kHz
    8 5.8 kHz - 12 kHz
    9 9 kHz - 20 kHz

Audio Enhancements: The UTE-52BT offers the following audio adjustments to enhance your in-car listening experience.

    • Media Xpander: Alpine's exclusive Media Xpander is engineered to bring out the musical details lost in compressed media, and it is adjustable per source to get the most out of your digital audio media. The Media Expander makes vocals or instruments sound distinct regardless of the music source. You can customize the Media Xpander to suit your personal taste by adjusting the level (0-8) for Bass, Mids, and Highs. The FM radio, USB, iPod, Pandora, Bluetooth, and Aux will be able to reproduce the music more clearly even in vehicles with a lot of road noise.
    • Bass Engine SQ: Bass Engine SQ tuning is a new feature that changes bass sound characteristics by automatically adjusting different combinations of EQ, Sub Level, and Crossover settings through the choice of five bass profiles (Standard, Punch, Rich, Mid Bass, and Low Bass); only customizable through TuneIt app for Apple iOS and Android devices. You can adjust the effect level (0-6) of the selected profile from the head unit.
    • Source Volume Level: The output level of each source (Tuner, USB, iPod, Bluetooth, Pandora, Aux) is individually adjustable from -14 to + 14 dB.

TuneIt App: TuneIt is an easy-to-use sound-tuning app that also offers Facebook notifications. Download this free app (from iTunes or GooglePlay) onto your Apple iPhone (iOS 5.0+ ) or Android smartphone (2.2+) and create a user profile about your vehicle and sound system. Your iPhone must be connected to the UTE-52BT via the appropriate Alpine iPod connector cable (500KCU445I, sold separately) or the Dock-/Lightning-cable that came with your iPhone. Your Android smartphone must support A2DP/AVRCP/SPP Bluetooth profiles and be paired with the Alpine receiver. Your iPhone or Android smartphone will also need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi.

    • Sound Tuning: The TuneIt app turns your iPhone or Android smartphone into a sound tuning interface for the UTE-52BT. Follow the simple TuneIt graphical instructions on your phone to adjust sound settings for your specific vehicle or choose from pre-made settings in the database. Settings that can be adjusted include Parametric EQ, Bass Engine SQ, Crossover, and Media Xpander. As you change settings on your smartphone, you will hear the results, so you can customize the sound to exactly how you want it. You can make and save up to 100 different sound settings in your account, which is helpful if you want various settings to use for specific types of music. After tuning your system, upload your settings to the Alpine Cloud Server to share them with other Alpine fans. You can also check out other user's settings and rate them. The more active you are, the higher your profile status progresses within the app.
    • Facebook Notifications: The TuneIt app also keeps you in touch with your Facebook friends. When you receive a notification, you will get a visual alert on the smartphone and the head unit, plus a sound alert through your car speakers. The visual notification includes the Facebook icon and the sender's name, with the profile picture shown on the phone. You are then able to listen to the notification via TTS (Text-to-Speech) through the head unit and your vehicle's speaker. You can even "Like" the notification from the head unit's front-panel controls. In order to receive Facebook notifications on the head unit, the TuneIt app must be the active app on your smartphone.

Note: Access to TuneIt will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone or smartphone to connect to the Internet. You will also need to turn on the GPS function of your phone.

Beep Guide: This function will give audible feedback with varying tones depending upon the button pressed. The volume of this feature can be set from 0-7.

    Display Features

Detachable Face: The unit's front-panel is detachable to deter theft; a hard storage case is included to protect the faceplate once detached. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can also be purchased for this unit. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Single-Line Display: This unit is equipped with a 1-Line white-backlit LCD, so you can easily view AM/FM stations and ID-3/WMA tag information.

Text Display: The digital media receiver will display the folder name, the file name, and the tag information, while playing a USB device loaded with MP3/WMA music files. This unit can scroll the text information of MP3/WMA files, folder names, and tags. There are two Text Scroll settings.

    • Auto: The information of folder and file names, and the tags are scrolled automatically.
    • Manual: The display is scrolled when a when a track is changed.

Auto Dimmer: This unit is equipped with an illumination lead (orange); when the unit's dimmer mode is set to Auto and the illumination lead is connected to your vehicle's headlight circuit, the display and button illumination will dim to a fixed, preset level whenever the headlights are turned on. If preferred, you may choose the Manual dimmer mode setting, so the display and button illumination is dim at all times.

Stay On Mode: You can set the delay in turning off the head unit's power after the vehicle's ignition is turned off. When you select a source mode, other than Off, the music will be paused after you turn the ignition key off. At the same time, the prompt "Press Preset 6 to Stay On" will scroll once. Press Preset 6 within 15 seconds to continue to listen to your music for the select period of time (off/5/15/30 min). If Preset 6 is not pressed, the unit will power off within 15 seconds. During this period, you can only receive a call by operating your paired smartphone.

Note: There is a possibility that the battery may be drained if already week during Stay On Mode.

Demo Mode: This unit has a demonstration feature for its display which can be turned On or Off in the menu.

Angle Mounting: For proper playback, Alpine recommends mounting the UTE-52BT no more that 35° above horizontal.

    Remote Control

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

Optional Wireless Remote: The Alpine UTE-52BT is wireless remote control ready. Simply add on the Alpine RUE-4202 IR remote (500RUE4202, sold separately) to make it even easier to control the head unit's functions.

Installed this receiver in a 2000 Ford Focus for my son. It has great sound quality, the alpine app is really cool, and people today don't need a CD player. My son doesn't even have any CD's.
    Pros:
Connects to phone using Bluetooth very quickly. Great sound quality. Cool app.
    Cons:
    none

    Awesome stereo!

I had recently bought a 2010 VW Beetle, so 1st thing I wanted to do was remove the standard unit for something with Bluetooth, hands free calling, & front-facing USB. This had all that! I wanted something with no CD slot, which this also had going for it.
    Pros:
Bluetooth Hands free calling Easy install - with the harness & faceplate kit Crutchfield provided Mic has a long cord
    Cons:
The only con I can think of is maybe the settings controls, but after reading the manual & getting a things setup, that's not an issue.

Great little radio for then price. Sirius comes in great and, thankfully, without that awful receiver hanging in the inside of the front windshield. BT works great, also.
    Pros:
    Bang for the buck.

    None, so far.

Overall a pretty good radio. I love the bluetooth. I have an Galaxy S3 and it was super simple to connect it. The sound is better than the stock head unit it replaced.
    Pros:
No CD mechanism. Able to turn off the onboard amp and use only the pre-outs.
    Cons:
I had issues getting the head unit to lock in to its mounting sleeve.

    Great head unit

Written By phil, Nelsonville Ohio on Thursday, July 17, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As usual this stands up to Alpine quality of my past purchases. This has a lot of options for a head unit under $150. The instruction manual is a must to navigate for the first time, maybe even first few. But using the manual isn't a bad thing. Navigating without a touch screen is difficult on almost every head unit, deal with it and stop whining if you don't like that. No it's not flashy but it's also an inexpensive unit. Bluetooth is OUTSTANDING and connects flawlessly, make sure you adjust the input volume on the head unit so it doesn't distort! The ability to use siri is great, I have not tried yet so I will not comment on ease of use. Make sure the external microphone is included, mine wasn't but as usual Crutchfield has one on the way. I have tinkered with the sound adjustments and they are very good, not like a separate processor and/or equalizer but it's good enough for me and I like to have mine almost perfect. Make sure you turn off demo mode or it will annoy you beyond belief. Tuneit works well but don't get crazy unless you really know about sound staging or you will be confused and hate it very fast. Make sure you have an iPod/iPhone cable to connect or the app will not work. Although Pandora control is included I heart radio can be used without problems. I never use Pandora because of the ads! Don't listen to reviews complaining about using the different features; a car stereo has limited space for buttons and sometimes they must control multiple features!
    Pros:
    Many features for the price
    Cons:
    Bluetooth microphone is only external

    Good Enough

Written By Adizzy, Chicago, Il on Monday, July 14, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit gets the job done. It is not a strikingly great looking deck, but doesn't look bad. The build quality is good but not great. The sound quality is what you expect from Alpine, very clear. Setup is easy but not necessarily intuitive. I had to read the directions, which isn't a bad thing. It's perfect for anyone that doesn't want the overhead of a CD player, wants the convenience of Bluetooth and the convenience of a front USB. The sound quality is better via USB. I'm using both an iPhone 4S and an iPad Air and they work seamlessly via Bluetooth and USB. I replaced an older premium alpine with this one because it was the best Alpine had to offer without a CD player.
    Pros:
No Cd Player Sound is above average for this price point value Seamless Bluetooth front USB
    Cons:
Build quality is average Coolness factor, kind of plain Display is average

    Pretty solid headunit

Written By CelA, New York, NY on Friday, July 11, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this unit in my Jeep grand cherokee. Display is nice and bright, easily readable on sunny days at the beach. Audio quality is great, love the way the unit looks. My only complaint after getting it is the menu navigation. I frequently play music from a USB flash drive and finding specific songs is a bit of a pain. It doesn't always list the tracks in alphabetical filename order, and with only 1 line of text it's hard to find a song in a folder with 100 other randomly listed songs. Much easier to use the BT function and navigate the songs on my android device. BT audio works great and connects almost instantly. BT call quality could be better, as sometimes the other person reports static. But this is a really solid stereo for the price; very happy with it despite the little annoyances.
    Pros:
Bluetooth, display brightness, sound quality, price
    Cons:
    Menu navigation, usb audio playback

So far so good. If you listening to your music on bluetooth audio and sync your phone to charge it your music will pause an you will have to un pause it. Depending how load your are listening to music determines the ability to hear someone on a phone call. Setup will no problem just make sure you take your unit off demo mode so it won't keep displaying

The CD is dead, long live the DMR

Written By PMMM, Annapolis, MD on Wednesday, June 18, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The CD is dead, for all intents and purposes. Why there are so few Digital Media Receivers on the market yet is beyond me, but there are comparatively very few. I don't know if this one is the best on the market (though it was the top ranked DMR on the various head unit ratings websites I checked before purchasing), but it is a pretty good head unit. Easy to install...even easier with Crutchfield's exceptionally good instructions. This head unit has everything I want and need for listening to music in the car. So far everything has been a breeze to set up. The instructions that came with the unit are a little lacking, and apparently machine translated to English from some other language, but not all that bad. I like the fact there are several different ways to adjust the settings, such as simple bass/treble.balance/fade, preset EQ (ie: "Rock", "Pop", "Classical", etc), or completely custom 9-band. In addition, you can assign certain settings to certain inputs, so if your phone and Sirius receiver have different audio output ranges, you can custom set each one so you aren't knocked silly when you switch between input methods.
    Pros:
No CD slot to collect dust and dog hair while not ever being used because no one uses CDs anymore. (Hardly anyway)
    Cons:
    Nothing yet.

    Good deck for the price

Written By Vanhornsky, Prescott, AZ on Monday, June 16, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This deck is good for the person that does not need or want a CD player. I have all of my music on my iPhone 5S and can play it just fine. I like the phone interface better than the deck interface for navigating music. The Pandora sync is OK but I do not like using the interface from the deck which trys to take control. It is just to hard to switch to different stations, especially while driving. Lets face it we listen to music while we drive. The color of the deck (blue) does make it hard to drive at night it is a little bright for me. I used ITune from Alpine and it does make setting up your stereo a little easier, but it will not allow you to change the settings while the vehicle is in motion. You can change it on the deck though.
    Pros:
Great features for the price range
    Cons:
Difficult interface for music play from phones (if you use the deck)

Easy installation. Crutchfield provides all the needed parts and a price below big chain stores and other online retailers. Bluetooth connects quick, sound quality is excellent and connects easily with the Alpine KTP-445A amp. I am an Android phone user and this Alpine streams my Google Play All Access subscription beautifully. I have it installed in my 94 GMC Sierra single cab. Fits nicely.
    Pros:
Integrates smoothly with Alpine KTP-445A amp. No need to run amp kit to battery. It is powered off head unit.

    Alpine Head Unit

Written By Ian S, Las Vegas on Tuesday, June 03, 2014

Installed unit in a 2006 Ford F-150 Supercab with (1) old Zapco 200W amp driving (2) Pioneer shallow 10" drivers in a custom enclosure under the rear seat and another 200W Zapco amp driving Alpine 5-1/2" door speakers with separate tweeters. System rocks. Alpine head unbelievable for the price, Bluetooth will control the stereo to about 10ft outside the truck. Direct link via USB increases sound quality quite a bit. Still researching all the Alpine head can do, there are a lot of menus. Great unit. Crutchfield shipped quick, arrived in perfect shape with all we needed to complete install. Will buy from Crutchfield again.
    Pros:
Alpine UTE-52BT : Great value, Crutchfields Install Package (free) really made it easy.
    Cons:
Unit a little hard to set up, but well worth the time researching the set up in the Owners Manual.

I'm heading north for a month and thought it's about time I brought a 1995 Tahoe into this century. Phone, playlists, Satellite and no CD's! Very logical install although it was a bit tight with supplied setup. Sound quality would be great with new speakers ... maybe later. Not very instinctive to use but it's getting there.
    Pros:
    Function
    Cons:
    A bit complicated to use

I bought this aftermarket stereo to add a system to my vehicle. It has all the features I need to use my Alpine amps and JBL loudspeakers to go with that. Installation was a breeze and it sounds better than before. I am very pleased with this stereo.
    Pros:
Bluetooth connectivity, L.E.D. display and of course the 6 channel outputs.

I bought this and it was exactly what I needed. I did not need all the bells and whistles, but still wanted a quality product and this was it.
    Pros:
Easy to use and install. Does exactly what it says it will do.
    Cons:
None really except that it is basic. If you want the colors, big screens or things like that this is not for you. But it is a great deck.

I used to install stereos professionally and Alpine has always done me right. I have installed an Alpine deck in two of my vehicles and would not choose any other. You can't go wrong with this great stereo!
    Pros:
Easy to use, looks nice and clean and was easy to install. Bluetooth and hands-free works very well and the call quality matches that of a factory hands free device.
    Cons:
I am sure there are some but none to list at the moment.

This is a great deck for the modern times. The Bluetooth audio function is a great tool to have. Is advertised as a pandora friendly deck but with BT it streams any audio from your phone (your library, iheart, beats etc.) with no wires! And making hands free calls is a great addition to keep your eyes on the road.
    Cons:
The only thing noticed was I was told using the phone that it sounded like I was "calling from inside a bucket."

    Just what I needed

For the price, this HU can't be beat. Maybe it can, I didn't try out any others. HOWEVER, in the few weeks I've had it installed I've been extremely pleased. Installation was a snap thanks to the supplied harnesses and dash kit. Immediately I could tell a MUCH improved audio quality over the stock Honda HU. Integration with my iPhone was a snap. Bluetooth works flawlessly. Siri has a habit of flaking, but I think that's an iOS issue. My only gripes are the build quality seems slightly flimsy (the faceplate weighs nothing and doesn't exactly snap in with reassuring clickiness), and the iPhone app is less than useless. The lack of a CD player doesn't but me in the least as I haven't played a disc in years. I'm sure for audiophiles the sound quality isn't the best, but for a dad in a base Honda CRV, it's awesome. Very happy with this purchase.
    Pros:
Easy installation, lots of settings and options, powered USB on faceplate + aux jack, good sound quality, fairly easy to operate.
    Cons:
Busy face with small buttons, Siri integration is flaky, useless iPhone app.

Great value for the price point. I was looking for a unit that would enable me to use satellite radio as well as blue tooth (primary function).. Install was easy with the provided kit from Crutchfield.. Sound quality is great!
    Pros:
Great sound, blue tooth pairs great with my iphone 4s. Streaming audio quality has been absolutely perfect.
    Cons:
Extensive menus that are a pain to cull thru. Pairing Bluetooth initially was difficult, but now works perfectly every time. Setting phone audio quality has been difficult, but ease of use outweighs any negatives.

Very happy with the Bluetooth on this unit as I drive a lot for business and need a clear phone connection. In that aspect it succeeds well. I also listen to SiriusXM for music and the Alpine falls miles short from the factory radio in my Volvo S80. The music used to sound open and clear, with deep, full bass and sparkling highs like the front row of a concert hall, but with the Alpine it sounds cheap, thin and compressed like a cheapo aftermarket unit.
    Pros:
Bluetooth connectivity, usb and micro aux inputs. Looks good. Removable faceplate for the paranoid.
    Cons:
Poor musical quality. Controls are confusing for those unfamiliar with the unit.

I really like this unit. Bluetooth is nice, although there are times when it won't automatically. On ECG to my iPhone via bluetooth. I am still working on adjusting the mic settings for hands free calling, but it works pretty well when there is not much ambient noise.

Crutchfield is great! Everything I needed was included of easily ordered along with the unit.
