Our take on the Alpine CDE-W235BT

by Zak Billmeier
Alpine

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Big two-line display and simple controls

It's like getting twice the Alpine for your dash — the CDE-W235BT CD receiver fills your vehicle's double-DIN (4" tall") opening, giving you an easy-to-read two-line display and easy-to-reach controls. You'll also enjoy that legendary Alpine sound quality, and a stereo that looks pretty handsome in your dash.

Stream music, talk hands-free

The CDE-W235BT lets you keep your hands on the wheel when a call comes in, and ensures you and your caller make a clear connection. Once you mount the included microphone in a good spot, you can adjust the mic's gain to best match your speaking voice. You can also tweak the phone output and ring volume ahead of time, so you won't go diving for the volume knob every time someone calls.

When a call comes in, you'll see your caller's name and phone number on the two-line display. You can answer the call by tapping the phone button on the front panel, or set up the receiver to answer all calls automatically. You can see some useful phone info on the screen, too, like a signal strength indicator and even an alert when a text message comes in.

Don't forget your iPhone

Your iPhone is the key to a seemingly never-ending supply of music. First, you can dive into all the tunes in your iTunes® library using the CDE-W235BT's controls. You can also play the audio from several popular Internet radio apps, meaning you'll never run out of music, no matter how long your journey may be.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Alpine stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the CDE-W235BT, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

iPod note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility.

    • Manual: The display is scrolled when a disc is loaded or when a track is changed.

Auto Dimmer: This unit is equipped with an illumination lead; when the unit's dimmer mode is set to Auto and the illumination lead is connected to your vehicle's headlight circuit, the display and button illumination will dim to a fixed, preset level whenever the headlights are turned on. If preferred, you may choose the Manual dimmer mode setting, so the display and button illumination is dim at all times.

Demo Mode: This unit has a demonstration feature for its display which can be turned On or Off in the menu.

2-DIN Chassis: The Alpine CDE-W235BT has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as Double DIN), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets, or Euro-mounted using the supplied mounting sleeve. As always, please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to verify fit with your vehicle.

    Disc Playback

Disc Compatibility: The unit features a single disc player that will playback CD-Audio, CD-Text, and finalized CD-R/CD-RW audio discs.

MP3/WMA Playback: This unit can play CD-R and CD-RW discs containing MP3/WMA audio files recorded using the ISO 9660 Level 1 or Level 2 formats. MP3 files with bit rates from 8-320 kbps are supported; WMA files with bit rates from 32-192 kbps are supported. Up to a maximum of 255 folders & a maximum 510 files can be read from one disc. ID3 tags (v1/v2) and WMA tags are supported; track title, artist name, and album name can be displayed.

Note: The head unit does not support AAC file playback.

Text/File/Folder Quick Search: When you are playing a disc with CD Text or ID3/WMA tags, you can easily search for a track, file, or folder by its title. Once you have activated the search mode, you can use the rotary encoder to quickly scan through the titles to locate the desired track. For discs without CD Text or ID3/WMA tags, searches are made using the track numbers associated with each song.

Angle Mounting: For proper CD playback, Alpine recommends mounting the CDE-W235BT no more that 35° above horizontal.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Plus (powered by Parrot): The Alpine CDE-W235BT features built-in Bluetooth technology (v3.0), powered by Parrot. Parrot is the global leader in wireless devices for mobile phones, for expanded compatibility for many Bluetooth wireless technology enabled cell phones. The head unit's built-in Bluetooth allows you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit.

Bluetooth Profiles: In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP (Hands Free Profile), HSP (Head Set Profile), OPP (Object Push Profile), PBAB (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).

Pairing: The Alpine CDE-W235BT can be paired to up to three Bluetooth enabled mobile devices (only one device can be used at a time). Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Alpine CDE-W235BT. Parrot software updates provide support for future phones.

External Microphone with Noise Cancellation: The included external microphone (with visor-clip) allows you to speak to the other party on the telephone call hands-free, while the other party's voice is played through your car stereo speakers. The external microphone is tuned and engineered to reduce noise interference and feedback. This allows optimal placement in your car, for the best possible sound quality. You can adjust the microphone's volume level; and even mute the microphone, so your voice will not be heard by the caller. The external microphone measures 0.5625" (diameter) x 1.625" (deep); and features an attached 13' cable terminated by a right-angle male 3.5mm connector.

Receiving Calls: The Alpine CDE-W235BT provides a couple ways to answer your phone calls without picking up your mobile phone. Incoming calls are announced by a caller ring tone through your vehicle's speakers (music will be muted) & a Caller ID message across your Alpine head unit's display.

    • Manual Answer: Manually answer an incoming call by pressing the "Phone" button on your Alpine head unit.
    • Automatic Answer: Set the Alpine head unit to answer the incoming call automatically; when a call is received, it is answered automatically after approximately 5 seconds.
    • Call Waiting: If a second call is received during a current call, you can have the first caller wait momentarily while you take the second call. When you are finished with one call, you can switch to the other.

Placing Calls: The Alpine CDE-W235BT provides a variety of functions for placing a phone call without using your mobile phone. The Alpine CDE-W235BT features full phone book access, call history, voice tag dialing, and redial with compatible phones.

    • Preset Dialing: You can assign phone numbers that you dial frequently to presets (1-6) for quick recall. You can assign up to six frequently called phone numbers. A total of 18 phone numbers can be stored in the preset memory (6 numbers for each mobile phone paired).
    • Call History: The 80 previously dialed, received, or missed numbers can be retrieved and dialed from memory.

Call Switch: This function allows you to initiate the transfer of audio between your mobile phone and your car's speakers.

Text Message Alert: The CDE-W235BT can give you a notification on the display with a blinking mail icon indicator for 30 seconds while receiving a text message on your Bluetooth-enabled phone. The mail icon indicator will remain on if there is an unread message on a connected mobile phone. You must still read or create a text message from your mobile smartphone.

Audio Streaming: The Alpine CDE-W235BT can stream music from you Bluetooth A2DP/AVRCP mobile device. Not only can it control & stream your music through Bluetooth, it can process your music using its built-in DSP Sound Expansion to ensure you get the best sound. Basic playback functions include - Play, Pause, & Skip (Previous/Next). The head unit will also display your stored music's song information; such as Artist name & Song/Album title. The CDE-W235BT also supports audio streaming of music apps on your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, but without control or metadata. You will continue to use your Bluetooth enabled smartphone to view and control streaming music apps. When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Note: Bluetooth Firmware Update v01.27.00 is required for Bluetooth control and song information display from an Apple iOS 6.0+ device.

Bluetooth Sound Quality Adjustments: You can customize the sound of your Bluetooth hands-free experience to fit your own preferences. You can adjust the CDE-W235BT's mic gain, phone output, & ring tone volume. If that's not enough, there are 5 sound quality settings to choose from to get the balance just right for you. This flexibility will make your phone calls a pleasurable experience.

You will continue to use your iPhone's touchscreen to navigate your apps. Not all apps will be compatible.

iPod/iPhone Display: The Alpine CDE-W235BT will display your iPod/iPhone's stored music file information in Head Unit or iPod Passenger Control mode. Great unit with many features and EASY to use. Typical Alpine quality without the disco lights found on some other brands. I am old school and a musician and prefer good quality sound and I am very happy with this stereo.
    Pros:
Clean, articulate sound. Great features such as bluetooth,Usb,etc. No Disco lights like the pioneers!
    Cons:
Can't really think of any, I love my new stereo!

This alpine unit met all of my key needs. I was looking for a unit to update my car with a hands free option and a mp3 option as well. I am a big Alpine supporter and once again Alpine came through for me. If you are looking for a head unit that's simple and don't want to pay for the unnecessary bells and whistles then this one is the right choice. Thanks again Alpine! Loyal customer 4 Life!

Alpine CDE-W235BT In-dash single CD receiver

Written By RichK, Iowa on Sunday, February 23, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Alpine CDE-W235BT was recommended by my Crutchfield advisor as the best choice for my needs which I described to him and my vehicle, a 2010 Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen TDi. I had the unit professionally installed...in this case a bargain of only $55 per hour and the installation took less than an hour. Total bill for installing the Alpine, steering wheel controls, antenna adapter, blue tooth and microphone...the whole works: $55. You probably wont be this fortunate...Total bill: $55! The unit has that European look of simplicity which enhances the VW center stack and resembles the piece of junk 6-disk CD, Sirius satellite, bluetooth Volkswagen sound system VW comissions Delphi to manufacture for them and installs in many different VW models. VW build a fun- to-drive, economical vehicle in this diesel wagon... why can't they get the electrics and electronics right? Thanks to Crutchfield, I did not have to spend a $$$Grand$$$ or more to replace this fried radio with a rebuilt factory radio identical to what I had.
    Pros:
Good looking, affordable replacement for the VW original. Sounds better and picks up stations and holds them better than the original;.
    Cons:
Haven't found any yet. I'll let you know if I do.

This deck absolutely exceeded all my expectations! I replaced a factory deck on a 2007 Nissan Versa and I instantly went from not being able to play my music via my I-phone to having multiple choices on playback. My preference is taking advantage of the Bluetooth with also being able to answer/make calls hands free. I thought the external mic would be a con but I was able to conceal it above my rear view mirror. And btw, don't replace your factory speakers yet until this deck is powered on...wow what a difference!! A bit of advice...watch as many you-tube videos as possible regarding install and deck functions cause the factory instructions are somewhat vague.
    Pros:
Easy install Sounds great Blue tooth function
    Cons:
    Vague factory instructions

Great Unit for teh Price, bought it to replace a JVC head unit that literally died after 12 monts. Should've bought the Alpine in the first place. Blue Tooth works great and excellent sound. As I was replacing an after market system, the install took all of 15 minutes and 5 minutes of that was recalibrating the steering wheel control adapter for the new head unit. You won't be disappointed with this unit.
    Pros:
Great sound - easy install with the Crutchfield adapters
    Cons:
Dimmer didn't work, but then it didn't work in the last radio either - must be me.

We got this for our motorhome. The display is nice and large so it is easy to see while driving, and the buttons are big enough to not hit 2 or 3 at once!! Our needs are fairly simple and so far this is a perfect fit. Installation was straightforward and the switch from old to new was very smooth.
    Pros:
large, easily read display (for our older eyes!) bluetooth setup a breeze!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have only had this unit installed for a few days but I am very happy so far with it. The install instructions were spot on for installing in my 2002 Toyota Tacoma. I soldered the supplied wire harness and everything went together easily. I had to print out some of the instructions from the supplied CD to help set up the unit as the written ones in the box were not detailed enough. The CD instructions were easy to follow. After soldering the harness it took less than an hour to install the radio. The blue tooth is working well. I also have a satellite radio that I hooked up to this unit and it all works great. It did take me a while to figure out how to install and where to put the external phone microphone. There was not much information on that part of the install. I ended up removing the window pillar plastic and running the wires behind it and through the dash. I don't know about the long haul but so far I am very pleased with this unit. The unit was suggested to me by an advisor at Crutchfield and I am happy with his suggestion.
    Pros:
Was easy to wire and install the radio minus microphone placement
    Cons:
Took a while a figure out how and where to install the microphone

This is the third car that I've installed an Alpine unit in and I must say they get better all the time. This was an easy install once I new what to take apart to get the old factory deck out of my wife's 2001 CRV. This deck is an excellent upgrade from the factory stereo.
    Pros:
Easy install with the provided wiring harness and housing adapters. Alpine deck has easy to understand controls and setup was a breeze. Phone pairing was a snap.

    Excellant head unit replacement

This unit does Alpine proud. It was easy to install and I love the new features the original radio didn't have like the cell phone Bluetooth function. Nice upgrade for a 10 year old car.
    Pros:
Great sound, good looks, and easy operation.
    Cons:
FM reception not as good as the original unit. The car has the FM antenna in the rear side window and living in the SF Bay Area is a challenge with long distances at times, mountains and heavy fog at times. However, the original Subaru radio was better suited for FM reception. I'm going to try to install an external antenna.,

    Awesome upgrade

Written By Ken, Pembroke, Ma on Sunday, February 02, 2014

I bought this Alpine to upgrade the stock 6 disc unit in my 2004 F150, as I wanted a way to connect my iPhone 4S for my music, love the sound, easy to use , Bluetooth works great, except you will have to upgrade the firmware to display the song, artist, or album, only when wireless, if you connect a USB, it does all of that without upgrading. The Bluetooth sounds crystal clear, and with the wire harness and mounting kit, install was a breeze, the only disappointment was that the led display doesn't change colors, only the European model does, I still think it's great, I would highly recommend this to anyone looking to upgrade the factory radio
    Pros:
Sound quality, Bluetooth , ease of install
    Cons:
LED display doesn't change to match dash

This was a replacement for an aged factory unit and overall, it was a good improvement. Sound improvement was so so, but new speakers would have certainly helped - no money for that at the moment. Still haven't figured out how to set the danged clock! For that matter, it's a struggle to set the clocks on any of the other Alpines that we have around here!
    Pros:
    Good solid Alpine quality.

    Marginal sound improvement

    Excellent

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent head unit. I got this for my wife mainly so she could play audio via Bluetooth from her phone. I knew alpine made a quality product, but I didn't realize what a difference in sound quality there would be. I put it in a 2009 Lancer. The fit was great and the install was straight forward. Time consuming, but easy. The Bluetooth setup is incredibly easy. I've had a few cars with Bluetooth, but none come even close to how easy this one is to setup. Had music streaming from Pandora in literally under a minute. And the sound quality. A very noticeable increase in quality as well as a considerable bump in power. I fear the stock speakers could easily be pushed well passed their limit with this unit.

And it also looks very nice. Something you can't really capture in a picture. But when I finally got it in the car, it has a very clean look. Compared to some of the other units I've seen that try to be flashy, this one has a simple, clean, quality look to it. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a double din head unit. Also, I'm not sure if there was a problem with the stock unit, but the radio reception is significantly better as well. Stations that were fuzzy before came in loud and clear. Excellent unit over all.
    Pros:
Sound quality, clean polished look, excellent Bluetooth.
    Cons:
    None yet.

    Great, Not Awesome

First off let me say that this Radio has two HUGE Pros going for it. First, the sound quality on this is awesome! The level of detail from high's, and mid's is incredible. Secondly, its super easy to to connect to BlueTooth. Connection was simple, and easier then anything out there. I have this in a 2002 Toyota Sequoia SR5 with MTX 6.5" inch door speakers and it sounds wonderful with the Alpine 45x4 inline amplifier. Adding an MTX subwoofer next!
    Pros:
Sound Quality is top notch! Super Easy BlueTooth setup.
    Cons:
Display is boring and very plain looking, almost like a factory radio. Also there is no HD Radio support. HD Radio should be standard in all car radios as of now. Alpine is known for sound quality over there years but this thing only has a 3 band equalizer, come on man! Even the cheaper Pioneer radios (Price wise) have 8 band equalizers standard.

I installed this in my 05 Ford Freestar, in my driveway at 11 PM. I was leaving on a trip the next day, very early, and I needed an Ipod jacked stereo. It couldn't have gone smoother. Crutchfield had gotten the correct wiring harness and mount kit together and shipped it all, 2 Day, free. It all arrived on time, and was as advertised. The stereo worked great, the only issue I have is that I can't figure out how to change the clock. And no, i haven't looked at the manual yet, I'd like to figure it out on my own. So far, it's eluded me. But my day will come. Bottom line, excellent deck for the $$$$.

I purchased the CDE-W235-BT for my 2009 Nissan Frontier. The install took about 45-50 min and I'm very happy with this Unit. I now have "Hands Free" use of my iPhone (iOS 7), and can stream my iTunes via Blue Tooth or plug into the USB port to charge and play. If you are like me and don't need Satelite or DVD. This unit is for you.
    Pros:
Ease of use. It looks like a Factory unit.
    Cons:
A little tricky to set up the menu options, but once you get that done, you're good to go.

installed in my 2004.5 Silverado crew cab to replace factory radio. This was easy to install and sounds great compared to factory system. The radio has many features like Bluetooth and USB. It is truly easy to setup and use. I replaced the factory receiver because the cd player stopped working. Great product!
    Pros:
Looks good, easy to setup, performs as expected.
    Cons:
the volume control increments step up too much. it needs half increments instead of full numbers.

    User-Friendly and practical CD Receiver

Written By Levi, Denver, CO on Friday, September 20, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I puchased this Alpine Double-din CD receiver to replace the factory Monsoon stereo with CD changer in my 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe because the Monsoon CD player stopped working. My new Alpine unit works well at playing CDs and also my home burned CD-Rs. I like the simple and logical buttons. I wish it had a dedicated Power (On/Off) button, but I have to push the Source button to turn it on. I have to push and hold the Source button for 3 seconds to turn it off. It is easy to change the display readout which has the option of showing Track number and elapsed playing time on each track, OR it can show CD text information on CDs which contain it.

One complaint I have is that at night, the words and markings on the lighted buttons are very difficult to read. The printing (marking) is too small and appears blurry when lit up with the blue light at night. They are a little easier to read during the daytime. On the other hand, the display is easier to read (day and night), except when the sun is shinning directly on it.

The sound quality of CDs is the same as it was on my old factory Monsoon car stereo (very good but not excellent). The bass is not very strong, but I don't like a lot of bass anyway. The sound quality on FM radio is fairly good, but not very clean or crisp. AM radio sounds poorly with background humm. It has marginal reception and sound quality. I have not used the Bluetooth functions yet, so I am not able to rate them. I enjoy the convenience of USB port
    Pros:
Simple and logical controls and menus. I like having buttons to push and not a touchscreen. Attractive appearance in my vehicle's dash. The sound quality of CDs is very good and the 3-band graphic equalizer works well. The USB port is convenient to play music files on a thumb drive (USB storage device). Now I can listen to all my MP3 songs that I have purchased from the internet (stored on a thumb drive), in addition to regular CDs and CD-Rs.
    Cons:
Poor AM radio reception and sound quality. Slight background humm when listening to radio (worse on AM). Buttons are difficult to read at night. No dedicated power button.

    Outstanding sound

Wanted to add Bluetooth and USB to my '06 F-150 and considered a Parrot add-on but for $30 more decided to replace the HU with this Alpine. Glad I did, the sound quality is outstanding. I replaced the factory speakers last year with Polk Audio so the new Alpine isn't limited by speakers. This Alpine matches the dash of my truck very well and the large controls are easy to use at a glance..I did not want a "thief magnet" touch screen that would be harder to see and use in bright sunlight. Some have complained about the look of this unit's display but look at the pictures before you order and decide then not later. Crutchfield is excellent as usual.
    Pros:
Sound quality. Large easy to use controls.
    Cons:
    None

Great little stereo receiver. Music from my iPod sounds a lot better then the cassette adapter I was using on my factory stereo in my 2006 Hyundai Tucson. Very easy to install with the wire harness provided by Crutchfield. The only issue I have is not being able to update the firmware for the Bluetooth module. Apparently my bluetooth connection from my PC does not allow for FTP transfer. The only other way to get the firmware updated is to send the stereo into Alpine. Not going to remove stereo after spending the time to install it. However, I read that the iPod sounds better with the USB connector, so I do not really have a need to update the Bluetooth firmware. It just would be nice to connect my iPod wirelessly and have one less cable in the car. The Bluetooth does work great with my Windows phone.
    Pros:
Sounds better than factory stereo. Easy to use.
    Cons:
Cannot update Bluetooth firmware easily, but not really necessary.

    Dissapointed in this unit

This is my 2nd Alpine head unit, and while the generall functions of the radio are all excellent, I am EXTREMLY dissapointed in the structure of the display backlighting. The major issue is that you can't read the dispaly during daylight hours. The backlight for the display is always "on" and the strength of the digit and letter display is not much brighter than the backlight. So no matter how good or "bling" the radio is what good is it if you can't read the display ? Tried fiddling with the setup but there's nothing you can alter with respect to the display lighting.
    Pros:
Excellent overall sound quality, great tunability
    Cons:
Poor backlight and display illumination design !!

Installation was easy with Crutchfield's guides and assistance. The unit has been very easy to operate. Controls are simple to use. I've been very impressed with the sound. I'm able to adjust treble, bass & mid-range. I've put all my music on a tiny jump drive and plugged it in. Connection to my iPhone for Bluetooth is great as well as my music via the iPhone. It's perfect.

    Alpine CDE-W235BT

Written By GlennH, Ocala, Fl. on Tuesday, June 04, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a background in commercial sound systems and have owned Alpine products in the past. But I still considered other brands and did quite a lot of research before deciding on this unit. The Crutchfield team's advice was very helpful in making my decision. I rated it at five stars not because there are not better head units out there but the price point makes it a very good value. I selected it primarily for the Bluetooth ability and Alpine's solid reputation. It did not disappoint. The installation was easy and the vehicle spec sheet was a big help. It paired quickly with my Galaxy S3 and the call settings and options were impressive and worked well. Some reviewers experienced pairing and other issues. My answer to that is to download and print out the manual, take the time to read it and refer to it during initial setup. Car radios are not as simple as they once were, so I would urge those who purchase this unit or some other to spend a little time with the book. The CDE-W235BT performs well and is easy to use while driving and looks good in the dash of my 2008 F-150.
