Our take on the Alpine CDE-W235BT

by Zak Billmeier
Alpine

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Big two-line display and simple controls

It's like getting twice the Alpine for your dash — the CDE-W235BT CD receiver fills your vehicle's double-DIN (4" tall") opening, giving you an easy-to-read two-line display and easy-to-reach controls. You'll also enjoy that legendary Alpine sound quality, and a stereo that looks pretty handsome in your dash.

Stream music, talk hands-free

The CDE-W235BT lets you keep your hands on the wheel when a call comes in, and ensures you and your caller make a clear connection. Once you mount the included microphone in a good spot, you can adjust the mic's gain to best match your speaking voice. You can also tweak the phone output and ring volume ahead of time, so you won't go diving for the volume knob every time someone calls.

When a call comes in, you'll see your caller's name and phone number on the two-line display. You can answer the call by tapping the phone button on the front panel, or set up the receiver to answer all calls automatically. You can see some useful phone info on the screen, too, like a signal strength indicator and even an alert when a text message comes in.

Don't forget your iPhone

Your iPhone is the key to a seemingly never-ending supply of music. First, you can dive into all the tunes in your iTunes® library using the CDE-W235BT's controls. You can also play the audio from several popular Internet radio apps, meaning you'll never run out of music, no matter how long your journey may be.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Alpine stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the CDE-W235BT, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

iPod note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility.

    • Manual: The display is scrolled when a disc is loaded or when a track is changed.

Auto Dimmer: This unit is equipped with an illumination lead; when the unit's dimmer mode is set to Auto and the illumination lead is connected to your vehicle's headlight circuit, the display and button illumination will dim to a fixed, preset level whenever the headlights are turned on. If preferred, you may choose the Manual dimmer mode setting, so the display and button illumination is dim at all times.

Demo Mode: This unit has a demonstration feature for its display which can be turned On or Off in the menu.

2-DIN Chassis: The Alpine CDE-W235BT has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as Double DIN), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets, or Euro-mounted using the supplied mounting sleeve. As always, please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to verify fit with your vehicle.

    Disc Playback

Disc Compatibility: The unit features a single disc player that will playback CD-Audio, CD-Text, and finalized CD-R/CD-RW audio discs.

MP3/WMA Playback: This unit can play CD-R and CD-RW discs containing MP3/WMA audio files recorded using the ISO 9660 Level 1 or Level 2 formats. MP3 files with bit rates from 8-320 kbps are supported; WMA files with bit rates from 32-192 kbps are supported. Up to a maximum of 255 folders & a maximum 510 files can be read from one disc. ID3 tags (v1/v2) and WMA tags are supported; track title, artist name, and album name can be displayed.

Note: The head unit does not support AAC file playback.

Text/File/Folder Quick Search: When you are playing a disc with CD Text or ID3/WMA tags, you can easily search for a track, file, or folder by its title. Once you have activated the search mode, you can use the rotary encoder to quickly scan through the titles to locate the desired track. For discs without CD Text or ID3/WMA tags, searches are made using the track numbers associated with each song.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Plus (powered by Parrot): The Alpine CDE-W235BT features built-in Bluetooth technology (v3.0), powered by Parrot. Parrot is the global leader in wireless devices for mobile phones, for expanded compatibility for many Bluetooth wireless technology enabled cell phones. The head unit's built-in Bluetooth allows you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit.

Bluetooth Profiles: In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP (Hands Free Profile), HSP (Head Set Profile), OPP (Object Push Profile), PBAB (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).

Pairing: The Alpine CDE-W235BT can be paired to up to three Bluetooth enabled mobile devices (only one device can be used at a time). Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Alpine CDE-W235BT. Parrot software updates provide support for future phones.

External Microphone with Noise Cancellation: The included external microphone (with visor-clip) allows you to speak to the other party on the telephone call hands-free, while the other party's voice is played through your car stereo speakers. The external microphone is tuned and engineered to reduce noise interference and feedback. This allows optimal placement in your car, for the best possible sound quality. You can adjust the microphone's volume level; and even mute the microphone, so your voice will not be heard by the caller. The external microphone measures 0.5625" (diameter) x 1.625" (deep); and features an attached 13' cable terminated by a right-angle male 3.5mm connector.

Receiving Calls: The Alpine CDE-W235BT provides a couple ways to answer your phone calls without picking up your mobile phone. Incoming calls are announced by a caller ring tone through your vehicle's speakers (music will be muted) & a Caller ID message across your Alpine head unit's display.

    • Manual Answer: Manually answer an incoming call by pressing the "Phone" button on your Alpine head unit.
    • Automatic Answer: Set the Alpine head unit to answer the incoming call automatically; when a call is received, it is answered automatically after approximately 5 seconds.
    • Call Waiting: If a second call is received during a current call, you can have the first caller wait momentarily while you take the second call. When you are finished with one call, you can switch to the other.

Placing Calls: The Alpine CDE-W235BT provides a variety of functions for placing a phone call without using your mobile phone. The Alpine CDE-W235BT features full phone book access, call history, voice tag dialing, and redial with compatible phones.

    • Preset Dialing: You can assign phone numbers that you dial frequently to presets (1-6) for quick recall. You can assign up to six frequently called phone numbers. A total of 18 phone numbers can be stored in the preset memory (6 numbers for each mobile phone paired).
    • Call History: The 80 previously dialed, received, or missed numbers can be retrieved and dialed from memory.

Call Switch: This function allows you to initiate the transfer of audio between your mobile phone and your car's speakers.

Text Message Alert: The CDE-W235BT can give you a notification on the display with a blinking mail icon indicator for 30 seconds while receiving a text message on your Bluetooth-enabled phone. The mail icon indicator will remain on if there is an unread message on a connected mobile phone. You must still read or create a text message from your mobile smartphone.

Audio Streaming: The Alpine CDE-W235BT can stream music from you Bluetooth A2DP/AVRCP mobile device. Not only can it control & stream your music through Bluetooth, it can process your music using its built-in DSP Sound Expansion to ensure you get the best sound. Basic playback functions include - Play, Pause, & Skip (Previous/Next). The head unit will also display your stored music's song information; such as Artist name & Song/Album title. The CDE-W235BT also supports audio streaming of music apps on your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, but without control or metadata. You will continue to use your Bluetooth enabled smartphone to view and control streaming music apps. When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Note: Bluetooth Firmware Update v01.27.00 is required for Bluetooth control and song information display from an Apple iOS 6.0+ device.

Bluetooth Sound Quality Adjustments: You can customize the sound of your Bluetooth hands-free experience to fit your own preferences. You can adjust the CDE-W235BT's mic gain, phone output, & ring tone volume. If that's not enough, there are 5 sound quality settings to choose from to get the balance just right for you. This flexibility will make your phone calls a pleasurable experience.

Subwoofer Control: When the non-fading subwoofer preamp output is activated, you can adjust the subwoofer's volume, low-pass filter, & phase.

    Perfect fit

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As a replacement for the OEM radio for my 2007 Ford Explorer sport Trac is is great. Fit perfect and the sound is amazingly clean. I matched it with the Alpine KTP 445A amp and was even better. There are a alot of features and it takes some getting use to but over all great price and Alpine quality.
    Pros:
Perfect fit. Price and easy installation. Matches well with Alpine KTP 445A and Alpine Speakers.
    Cons:
    none

    Great car stereo

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I spent a lot of time researching a replacement for the factory radio in my Honda Van. The main reason for replacing the stereo was to get Blue Tooth capability. I have had hands free calling with two previous vehicles and really love it. The Alpine BT works flawlessly! I have had zero problems with making calls or listening to music over the BT. The sound quality is also much improved over the factory unit. I especially like how easy this unit was to set up and use. Large buttons and easy to read display in any light conditions. I did not want multiple bright flashing colors on the display. I can operate this without distraction while I drive, that's how it should be.
    Pros:
Flawless blue tooth with my iPhone. Easy to set up and use with large buttons. Great sound quality and good power.
    Cons:
    none

So far, so good -- but...

Written By John, East Moline, Ill. on Saturday, July 19, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My opinion of the product is very good....relatively simple operation, with a quick intuitive setup. It paired immediately with my iPhone 5s. Hands free audio quality is very good. Customizing individual sound levels for each input is a big plus.

Now to the Crutchfield issue --- this did NOT install easily in my 2013 Honda Fit. The kit that came with it indicated you should use the machine screws that came with the head unit to attach the unit to the plastic brackets from the kit. The screws were NOT long enough. I spent 20 minutes on the phone with a Crutchfield agent who was of no help and even provided me with wrong information on the size of the machine screws. His only answer was "I guess they must have changed the kit". Not good enough! With the width of the plastic bracket and the inset of the screw holes on the head unit, those machine screws did not work. I had to stop at four different hardware stores to find the right size machine screw (5X10 mm) to finish the installation. Once I obtained the correct machine screws, it installed quickly. Overall, I was VERY disappointed in the Crutchfield "help" with this issue.
    Pros:
Simplicity of operation, sound quality, customization, hands-free operation
    Cons:
None for the unit....BIG con on the Crutchfield lack of help on the accompanying installation kit which was inadequate.
Crutchfield response on Tuesday, July 22, 2014
At Crutchfield, our goal is make sure our customers get everything they need to install their new gear. Unfortunately, that didn't happen this time. For most other brands of stereo, the screws included with either the installation kit or the stereo would do the job. But this Alpine stereo has inset screw holes, so it needs longer screws. When this is the case, we normally include a separate package of longer screws, free of charge. Unfortunately, this is the first time we heard about this particular combination needing those extra screws. We're adjusting our database so that future orders will receive that extra hardware.

    pretty good

Written By Pete, Ann Arbor, MI on Sunday, July 13, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This head units is pretty good. High marks for the hands free phone--good sound quality and noise cancelling. Only complaint is that the menu interface is not great. In particular, the navigation of folders on the USB drive is bad. When you scroll through the folder list, it goes from one folder to the next ***in the order that the folders were copied onto the USB drive**. Really? The first album I put on there is the first one that I scroll to? That doesn't make sense, and the manual pretty much admits it. Here's what the manual says: "files are played back in the order that the writing software writes them...Therefore the playback order may not be what is expected." How about a more typical convention for playback order...like alphabetical, maybe? I am comparing this to the Sync system in my wife's Ford Flex, so maybe I am setting the bar pretty high. Luckily I have a workaround, I just need to copy the folders onto the USB drive in alphabetical order and then I can scroll through them in a logical way. I am worried that when I try to add "Abbey Road" onto my USB that I'll have a lot of re-copying to do....
    Pros:
Good noise cancelling during phone calls. Good interface for answering phone calls. Good sound during FM and USB playback.
    Cons:
Poor menu navigation during USB playback.

    Great modernization upgrade

Written By Ken, Atlanta, ga on Sunday, July 06, 2014

Great overall. Great sound, easy to install, easy to operate. I opted for the double DIN size to replace my 2001 Passat's factory Monsoon system. I really like the menu/key setup on this alpine compared to all the other single DIN units that try to do everything with 2 buttons. The blue tooth and hands free were the motivating factors here. BT works well, and the hands free sound quality is great. I'd highly recommend this to anyone.

I bought this for my daughters VW Passat because of the hands free features. It seems to work well for her. Everything works as explained in the manual. Installation was a breeze and it fit perfectly in the dash with no aftermarket kit needed. Seems to be easy to use. My daughter took to it quickly with out much reference to the manual.
    Pros:
Ease of use. Looks great in car. Love the display ( easy to see in sunlight )
    Cons:
Would like to have more RCA outputs for future upgrades.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had a 6 disc changer. It came in the vehicle and worked for 11 years playing books. I was annoyed when it failed, I thought about repairs or a rebuilt one. I'm glad I bought this one. The VD plays great , but best of all the connectivity (bluetooth, aux in). The phone with microphone has great fidelity that I can use while driving. I don't make calls while driving, but being able to answer with the touch of a button has been invaluable.
    Pros:
great sound, bluetooth works well, installed appearance is clean
    Cons:
Installation tricky in the Ford Truck dash. The instructions were not very clear.

Perfect in 2001 Toyota Solara Convertible

Written By LeeRyder, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on Monday, June 09, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installation was a breeze with an original equipment appearance. Has everything I wanted and more than I need. The one thing I REALLY wanted and needed was display visibility in bright daylight with the convertible top retracted...this unit delivers! Works well with factory speakers and Kicker (aftermarket) amp. Clock displays during operation and when unit is off. Had this unit in operation for 16 months now and considering putting the same unit in my Toyota Tundra. Crutchfield's prices, delivery, and customer service are outstanding!
    Pros:
Readable display in bright sunlight, front USB port, single control knob, clock, and blue lighting.
    Cons:
No USB port on rear panel. No color lighting change function.

    Great look and sound

Written By Grayson, Maryland on Wednesday, June 04, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit was quick to install and required no modification to my vehicle. Compared to my previous aftermarket unit, this one powers on much quicker, feels more premium, is very responsive to key presses, integrates well with external amps, and provides lots of settings to fine-tune your listening experience.

To all Android/other mobile OS users curious about the 1.27.00 firmware update, an Alpine rep informed me the update is for iOS only, so don't bother with it.
    Pros:
-Has a clock!!! -Bluetooth quality is good and takes only seconds to connect (contrary to other reviews that said it was slow) -Accessory mic is very good and easy to install (I clipped it on my a-pillar) -Display dims at night -Simple interface, enough buttons, easy to operate without taking your eyes off the road -Power-up is quick -Separate subwoofer and bass control -Radio reception is good -High pass and sub low pass filters
    Cons:
-The trim kit was a very tight fit (tighter than my previous aftermarket double-din unit) -Bluetooth occasionally will stutter if switching tracks quickly If I had to nitpick: -Volume increments are too big (10 is quiet, 20 is loud) I would prefer the adjustment to be finer, my previous unit was quiet at 8 and loud at 40.

The unit game in packaged well with easy to read instructions. All operations work fine with the exception of the Blue Tooth music stream. When playing music it goes into BT Pause between every song and will not reset. Still a work in progress. Other than that an outstanding unit.
    Pros:
Looks good, works well with the exception of the BT music streaming. Sounds terrific in the car.
    Cons:
BT music stream goes to BT Pause between each track and will not clear. Still trying to work on that problem.

This is a good system, especially for those looking for a system that doesn't look like a disco-tech! (Shows you my generation! LOL) There are some short-falls I like to tell you about. First, despite what the review video says about this radio, the blue light color cannot be changed. Called Alpine and they informed only European models the user can change the color. USA models stay blue. Also, the radio does not display title and/or artist info no matter what audio source you are listening too. One more thing, the system does not alert you to in-coming text messages despite the features saying it does so. I think these are issues a top of the line company like Alpine shouldn't have penny-pinched and left out. But it is a clean looking, great sounding system, and the Bluetooth works great. For the money it's a very nice system, but would look at other systems for around the same price or less that do the features I stated Alpine left out. Oh, and if you want a remote control, forget about a radio App that can help you control the system with your phone. If you want one, it doesn't come with the system. You have to buy one separately.
    Pros:
    Look at my review.
    Cons:
    Look at my review.

Alpine CDE-W235BT and 2010 Toyota Camry

Written By rstefano, Chantilly, VA on Saturday, May 03, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

INSTALLATION: The Alpine radio was installed into a 2010 Toyota Camry XLE with JBL audio system. I used the AXXESS AX-ADBOX1 with the matching AXXESS AX-ADTY01 Toyota Wiring harness and the AXXESS ASWC-1 steering wheel control. The Alpine radio lacks pre-amp outputs so I used the speaker outputs from the radio. The AXXESS wiring harness did not include an illumination wire so I contacted Crutchfield Tech Support. They quickly identified which Camry wire I needed to tap into to obtain radio illumination. Crutchfield Tech Support even sent an email with a graphic depicting the wire. This installation keeps the factory JBL amplifier and JBL speakers. PERFORMANCE: Quite an upgrade over the factory Fujitsu system. I no longer have XM radio, but I wasn't using it anyway. The sound is typical Alpine high quality and the JBL speakers now sound alive rather than muffled. The Alpine deck integrates nicely into the dash and I prefer knobs and buttons over touch screens. The Alpine Bluetooth is another great improvement over the factory Bluetooth. The Bluetooth system connects and disconnects quickly with my Android cell phone.
    Pros:
Greatly improved sound quality. Greatly improved Bluetooth Excellent FM reception. Parametric EQ
    Cons:
The biggest negative is the system does not illuminate unless it is turned on. If the system is off, the illumination is completely off. The illumination should come on when the car illumination comes on. This is a shortcoming from Alpine.

Love this device, works seemlessly with my phone. I had no issues installing it in my 2003 GTI. I will say that I had to do some soldering, so if you're not an electronics geek like I am, you might want to have someone install it for you.

Other than that it sounds and works wonderfully. Great upgrade for any Mk IV VW

Replaced stock unit in my Toyota. Nice features, good sound, but bad menu structure. My iPod holds a huge variety of music. It takes forever to scroll to the artist/song you want. They should have adopted the functionality of the iPod classic which allows you to do a fast or slow scroll. Finding an artist/song that starts with an "m" takes minutes worth of scrolling.
    Pros:
Sound quality, easy to install, great features.
    Cons:
Menu structure, scrolling to find the songs you want takes forever.
