Great little system amp

Instead of filling your old clunker's trunk with amps and a sub like you did in your youth, you can now power a complete speaker and subwoofer system in your more up-to-date vehicle with one single Soundstream Picasso Nano PN5.640D. This 5-channel amplifier will power your entire system, yet it will fit in some pretty tight locations because of its incredibly compact size. And there's no doubt that the stalking tarantula logo looks pretty cool too.

Power packed

The Picasso Nano PN5.640D puts out 4 channels of 60 watts RMS to your full-range speakers and up to 350 watts to your sub — that's a great balance of power between speaker and sub levels. Or, if your rear speakers don't concern you, you could power high-performance front components with 200 watts RMS each, along with 350 watts for the sub.

Convenient controls and connections

Soundstream gives you all the control features you'll need to craft the sound to match your different components. High-pass filters on the front and rear channels keep low bass out of your full-range speakers so they'll play louder and cleaner. The subwoofer channel features a variable low-pass filter and bass boost, so you can get the best possible performance from your sub. The amp can handle preamp or speaker-level signals so you can use it with a factory receiver that doesn't have preamp outputs.

My system has plenty of power. Who needs an amp?

You might think you don't need an amp because you have a 400-watt system in your car, or because your new stereo puts out 50 watts a channel. But those are peak wattage ratings, which may boil down to 15 or 20 watts per channel, using the more realistic RMS rating. An amp sends your speakers the power they need to deliver your music with clarity and impact, whether you're using factory speakers or high-performance components. And low-frequency reproduction requires lots of power, so an amp is an absolute must if you're adding a sub to your system.

Big sound small package

Written By Mike, California on Monday, October 05, 2015

With such limited space in my convertible Z I thought I would try this amp out. I was very skeptical when I unboxed the amplifier but after getting it installed I was amazed at the sound it put out. It's driving my front components, rear 2 way and my 10 inch sub and it sounds great. I wanted crisp audio with the top down I was not looking for or expecting a crazy over the top system like in my 20's but I think I would have been ok with my current system when I was younger which is saying something.

Pros: Clean, efficient sound with a tiny footprint

Cons: Sensitive gain control, plan on putting some time into tuning

Good sound for the price

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sounds good for the price. The 1/2 and 3/4 channels are reversed, but not a big deal. I have it powering 4 kicker ds door speakers and a kicker 10" sub and it sounds pretty good for the $$.

Pros: Cost

Cons: Channels are reversed

How can someone review something that has no instructions on how it's

Written By Anonymous, Utah on Sunday, August 09, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very disappointed!

Pros: Haven't installed it cause the installation instructions does not support this model. I'll have to do a trial and error type deal and hope I don't blow it up. The Crutchfield techs, who recommended this unit, have been No help!

Cons: Same as the pros.

Great Compact Amp

Written By John B, Folsom, CA on Monday, July 20, 2015

I needed a compact amp that would drive 4 channels and a sub for a BMW Z3 and this unit did the job, barely. Even with this small amp it was a close fit replacing one of the existing trunk amps. Paired this with a Clarion CZ505, Polk Component Speakers and a Kicker 6 3/4" sub woofer. Provides much better sound than the old stock system. Very impressed. Too bad they, like many car electronic vendors it seems, only provide a 90 day warranty if not professionally installed.

Pros: Compact, easy to install, external sub woofer gain control a plus.

Cons: Level sensitivity is 12v max not 6v as stated in the manual. Warranty only 90 days if not installed by approved dealer.

Very good amp at a great price

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great small amp with a lot of power. Used it to upgrade my factory stereo in my 2012 Ram 1500 Quad cab, easily fit under passenger seat. Powers 3 1/2" dash speakers and 6 1/2" front door speaker off of channels 1 and 2 , 6"x 9" rear door speakers off of channels 3 and 4, and one kicker 10" sub off of the 5th channel. Sounds great.

Pros: Small and compact with plenty of power at a great price !!!

Cons: None

Some trouble

Written By Nateb, Illinois on Monday, July 13, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall I am happy with the amp. The 3 star rating is because of the installation issues i encountered along the way and the shear lack of documentation that came with the product.

I decided I was going to use the factory deck because I didn't want to lose any built in features. So My plan of attack was to run 2 speaker cables to each door. 1 would tie into the speaker level inputs. The other from the amp output to the speakers themselves. I only wired up the drivers side door so I could test the setup first before wiring up the rest if the vehicle.

I tied the speaker level input to the channel 1 Input on the amp using the propriety speaker level wire harness that came with it. I then wired the speaker to the channel 1 output of the amp. When I turned on the radio, nothing came out.

Soooo, to make a long story short, after a bunch of troubleshooting, calls to Crutchfield, and 2 amps later it was discovered that the channel 1 speaker level input outputs on channel 2 of the amp. So for all of you who are beating your head against the wall in rightfully assuming that channel 1 input would output on channel 1, please just simply move your output wires to channel 2 and you will have sound....

Now, had I wired up all 4 doors at the same time, I would have never had this problem. But because I did 1 at a time, it ended up costing me a week in installation delays and migrain headaches.

Pros: Small. Light. Accepts high and low voltage inputs. Price.

Cons: Channel 1 speaker lvl input outputs on channel 2. Channel 2 speaker lvl input outputs on channel 1. Channel 3 speaker lvl input outputs on channel 4. And channel 4 speaker lvl input outputs on channel 3. You can see how this would cause problems if you were testing 1 door at a time.........

Blown away

Written By Shackman, North Carolina on Sunday, June 07, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sound production and clarity exceeded expectaion, especially considering I'm still driving factory speakers and a 10" Kicker sub. Has enough adjustments to tailor output to what you have, small enough to get almost anywhere. Runs very cool for such robust output. The only caveat is the owner's manual; it doesn't address how to connect the 5 channel version to power the sub. Otherwise great "sound per pound."

Pros: Seems to have more power than rated. Compact size, runs cool, speaker level inputs. Great price.

Cons: Owners manual doesn't include diagrams or explanation on connecting the PN5 version to the sub.

Small size, big quality

Written By Bobby E, Murfreesboro, TN on Sunday, March 15, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just about all of us has purchased an amplifier and realized that the rated power on the amp did not reflect its true output. I will have to say that this thing has blown my expectations out of the water. I am running this after an AudionControl LC6i and pushing 4 Polk DXI6501 components with a JL 10" sub using my factory head unit. The clarity and power was very unexpected. I am currently running low gains and it gives high volume with clear; precise audio. I might purchase this same AMP for my Titan. Very compact size with solid; easy to get to speaker connections.

I am not that fond of the pigtail style RCA input adapters it uses as it made it a little difficult to get a nice clean amp display in the hatch of our Note. Although I can understand why this method was used because of the compact size of the amp.

Pros: Size Unexpected power output Solid speaker connections Easy access of hi/low pass filter and gain settings

Cons: Pigtail syle inputs

Very powerful amp in a very small size. Powers front/rear Kicker speakers and 10" Infinity sub. Make sure your engine is running if playing music because this amp will drain your battery if engine is off.

Pros: Powerful, small size, clean sound

Cons: May drain car battery is playing music when engine not turned on. Make sure engine is running.

Excellent Amp in a Small Chassis

Written By RalphC, Franklin, TN on Sunday, August 17, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this AMP in a 2014 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, I used the factory head unit and tapped into the signal after the factory amplifier. Did not even use a low pass adapter and it sounds extremely clean. I am running Polk 6.5 components model is (db 6501) in the front and 6.5 coaxials, model is (db 651) in the sound bar with a Memphis Audio 8" MClass sub in a ported box. The amp is very small for the amount of power it produces. I could not ask for more and have run JL audio amps along with Kenwood and Alpine and do not think I would consider anything else but the soundstream. It is top quality with the sound to match

Product Research

Channel Configuration: The SoundStream PN5.640D is a 5-channel amp; essentially two full range 2-channel amps and one mono subwoofer amp built into one chassis. Both full range sections are bridgeable, so the it can be configured as a 5-channel, 4-channel, or 3-channel amplifier.

  • Channels 1/2 and 3/4:
    • 4Ω: 60 watts RMS x 4-channels
    • 2Ω: 80 watts RMS x 4-channels
    • Bridged: 160 watts RMS x 2-channels into 4Ω
  • Channel 5:
    • 4Ω: 200 watts RMS x 1-channel
    • 2Ω: 350 watts RMS x 1-channel

Signal Inputs: Both RCA harnesses and speaker level harnesses are included to plug into the three input ports on the amp.

Auto Turn-on: When using a speaker level input, the amp will turn on automatically when it senses the input signal.

Level Control (Gain): The input levels are independently adjustable for channels 1/2, 3/4, and 5. The input range is 0.5 Volts to 12.0 Volts.

Crossover: The amp has independent crossover controls for channels 1/2, 3/4, and 5. The crossover slopes are all 12 dB/octave:

  • Channels 1/2:
    • Mode: two position switch; choose flat (full range, crossover is bypassed) or high pass
    • Frequency: set the crossover point when in high pass mode; rotary dial; 35-250 Hz
  • Channels 3/4:
    • Mode: choose flat (full range, crossover is bypassed) or high pass
    • Frequency: set the crossover point when in high pass mode; rotary dial; 35-250 Hz
  • Channel 5: because the channel 5 is the subwoofer section, the crossover is always engaged
    • Frequency: set the low pass crossover point; rotary dial; 35-250 Hz

Bass Boost: The bass boost on channel 5, centered at 45 Hz, is continuously variable from 0 dB (flat) to +12 dB.

Wired Remote: A wired subwoofer level control is included (channel 5 only). The remote has integrated flanges and screws are included to mount the unit under the dash. It includes a 16-1/2' cable to connect to the amplifier.

Note: The wired remote measures approximately 1-5/8" wide (2-1/4" including the mounting flanges) x 1" tall x 1-5/8"  deep (2-1/4" including the knob and cable).

Power Input: Two set-screw terminals are provided for connecting the power and ground cables. The terminals accept up to 8-gauge wire. The set screws are tightened/loosened with a Phillips head screw driver (not included).

Speaker Outputs: The five pair of speaker output set-screw terminals will accept up to 8-gauge wire. The set screws are tightened/loosened with a Phillips head screw driver (not included).

Signal Input: The amplifier has three proprietary signal input jacks, for use with either the included RCA harnesses or the included speaker level harnesses.

Remote: The wired remote cable plugs into another proprietary jack on the amp. The remote turn-on wire is also found in this harness.

Fuses: The amp has one 40-amp ATO fuse.

A 5-channel piece of art

Written by Buck Pomerantz, Staff Writer - Creative, on 3/7/2014 2:00:00 PM

At first, I thought, "What an odd-looking amp," but after handling it a while, I decided the Picasso Nano PN5.640D was actually a very cool-looking amplifier. A bit Gothic on the color scheme, but otherwise quite nice. It's especially cool because it's so small for a 5-channel amp. In fact, the Picasso Nano PN5.640D currently is the smallest and least expensive 5-channel amplifier that Crutchfield sells.

The amp's quite hefty and could act like a dangerous glass-breaking brick in an accident if it weren't securely mounted. Its 12" by 5" chassis probably would fit under most car seats, but a lot of folks might want to mount their Picasso Nano in plain sight (with all their neat wiring on exhibit, as well, of course).

All the power and speaker connections are grouped in a single terminal block conveniently on one end of the amp. The input and remote connections are made with plug-in harnesses. You have your choice of RCA connectors or bare wire, for when you need to use your vehicle's factory wiring to get the amp's input signals.

The controls are small, but very clearly marked and intuitively located, with the front, rear, and subwoofer controls grouped separately. There're even separate buttons to bypass the front and rear high-pass filters, a feature you don't usually see in a car amplifier. You'd bypass a high-pass filter when you run full-range speakers with good bass response, or when you're not running a subwoofer at all.

The Picasso Nano PN5.640D isn't the most powerful 5-channel amp out there, but it does have the power to adequately drive a couple sets of speakers and a subwoofer to fill just about any small to medium size car or truck with plenty of loud music. And I think it'll look good doing it. The only disappointing thing about this amp, for me, was when I powered up the piece under review and the blue stalking tarantula logo did not light up. I guess I was expecting too much out of a good thing.
