About the Soundstream Picasso Nano PN5.640D

Buck Pomerantz

Great little system amp

Instead of filling your trunk with amps and a sub like you did in your youth, you can now power a complete speaker and subwoofer system in your more up-to-date vehicle with one single Soundstream Picasso Nano PN5.640D. This 5-channel amplifier will power your entire system, yet it will fit in some pretty tight locations because of its incredibly compact size. And there's no doubt that the stalking tarantula logo looks pretty cool too.

Power packed

The Picasso Nano PN5.640D puts out 4 channels of 60 watts RMS to your full-range speakers and up to 350 watts to your sub — that's a great balance of power between speaker and sub levels. Or, if your rear speakers don't concern you, you could power high-performance front components with 200 watts RMS each, along with 350 watts for the sub.

Convenient controls and connections

Soundstream gives you all the control features you'll need to craft the sound to match your different components. High-pass filters on the front and rear channels keep low bass out of your full-range speakers so they'll play louder and cleaner. The subwoofer channel features a variable low-pass filter and bass boost, so you can get the best possible performance from your sub. The amp can handle preamp or speaker-level signals so you can use it with a factory receiver that doesn't have preamp outputs.

Features

Channel Configuration: The SoundStream PN5.640D is a 5-channel amp; essentially two full range 2-channel amps and one mono subwoofer amp built into one chassis. Both full range sections are bridgeable, so it can be configured as a 5-channel, 4-channel, or 3-channel amplifier.

  • Channels 1/2 and 3/4:
    • 4Ω: 60 watts RMS x 4-channels
    • 2Ω: 80 watts RMS x 4-channels
    • Bridged: 160 watts RMS x 2-channels into 4Ω
  • Channel 5:
    • 4Ω: 200 watts RMS x 1-channel
    • 2Ω: 350 watts RMS x 1-channel

Signal Inputs: Both RCA harnesses and speaker level harnesses are included to plug into the three input ports on the amp.

Auto Turn-on: When using a speaker level input, the amp will turn on automatically when it senses the input signal.

Controls

Level Control (Gain): The input levels are independently adjustable for channels 1/2, 3/4, and 5. The input range is 0.5 Volts to 12.0 Volts.

Crossover: The amp has independent crossover controls for channels 1/2, 3/4, and 5. The crossover slopes are all 12 dB/octave:

  • Channels 1/2:
    • Mode: two position switch; choose flat (full range, crossover is bypassed) or high pass
    • Frequency: set the crossover point when in high pass mode; rotary dial; 35-250 Hz
  • Channels 3/4:
    • Mode: choose flat (full range, crossover is bypassed) or high pass
    • Frequency: set the crossover point when in high pass mode; rotary dial; 35-250 Hz
  • Channel 5: because the channel 5 is the subwoofer section, the crossover is always engaged
    • Frequency: set the low pass crossover point; rotary dial; 35-250 Hz

Bass Boost: The bass boost on channel 5, centered at 45 Hz, is continuously variable from 0 dB (flat) to +12 dB.

Wired Remote: A wired subwoofer level control is included (channel 5 only). The remote has integrated flanges and screws are included to mount the unit under the dash. It includes a 16-1/2' cable to connect to the amplifier.

Note: The wired remote measures approximately 1-5/8" wide (2-1/4" including the mounting flanges) x 1" tall x 1-5/8" deep (2-1/4" including the knob and cable).

Connections

Power Input: Two set-screw terminals are provided for connecting the power and ground cables. The terminals accept up to 8-gauge wire. The set screws are tightened/loosened with a Phillips head screw driver (not included).

Speaker Outputs: The five pair of speaker output set-screw terminals will accept up to 8-gauge wire. The set screws are tightened/loosened with a Phillips head screw driver (not included).

Signal Input: The amplifier has three proprietary signal input jacks, for use with either the included RCA harnesses or the included speaker level harnesses.

Remote: The wired remote cable plugs into another proprietary jack on the amp. The remote turn-on wire is also found in this harness.

Fuses: The amp has one 40-amp ATO fuse.

Will this power 4- polk DB652's 100W Cont., 300W peak and 1 MTX TN10-04?

Q
Can I use a bass knob with this amp? Thinking of using the 5th channel to power a Kicker 44TCWC102(10" 350rms). If so, which brand knob should I use and which input does it plug into?
connor  Jun 15, 2021

A
This amp comes with a wired remote and the cable needed to connect the remote to the amp which only controls the bass levels using an RJ-25 connector which plugs into the remote bass port on the amp.

Hi, How is the Soundstream Picasso Nano connected to get around the Bose active noise cancelling.on a 2017 Buick Encore?

I can't answer about the Buick. But for my 2015 Accord, I had to disconnect the ANC module. I wired the amp with rca's to avoid the factory amp all together. I found the best information on the 9th gen Accord website. Assuming there might be one for Buick's...

Q
Hi! Can I power two 2 ohm subs with channel 5?
sean  May 04, 2020
2 answers
A
not sure, contact the tech at Crutchfield
stephen  May 04, 2020
A
The amp wants to see 2 ohm load to deliver it's wattage. You could wire the subs in series but at reduced power, or in parallel with a 1 ohm load BUT you will likely burn out your amp and risk having a thermal event. I have the 12" JL twc which is a 4 ohm dvc wired so the amp sees 2 ohm. All in the pre wired box by JL. I have it in a 2015 accord and there is plenty of bass all around. If your looking to shatter the earth with two woofers, look elsewhere for power.
benjamin  May 04, 2020
Q
If I connect a 2 ohm component speaker rated at 70W RMS to each channel, will this amp be able to handle it without overheating or causing any long term damage? As long as they arenâ??t bridged, right? Thanks in advance!
zac  Apr 28, 2020

A
The Soundstream Picasso Nano amp will deliver 80 watts RMS at a 2ohm impedance, per channel. Please chat with an Advisor online or by phone at 1-800-324-9695, as we do not advise exceeding the RMS rating on speakers. We will be happy to help you with finding an amp that would be best suited for your speakers.

Does this amp need a dedicated input for the 5th channel or can it use the inputs from 1-4?
dave  May 17, 2017

It needs it's own input but you can share with another channel using Y-cables. I have installed two of these and both times we used 4 Y-cables to split one source between all channels.

5th wont work with 1-4 needs it own which the amp does have hookup for

Remote turn on: Most amps that I am looking at have a place to put in the remote turn on wire. I do not see this on the amp. Is there one?

Regaurding previous post. The EVA should read RCA. About correct does it again. Also, the plug referenced, plugs in the lower right corner when looking at the front of the amp.
micheal  May 05, 2017
A
The amp has a small plug that both the EVA Jack's and remote turn on wires attach to. That plug is then pigged into the amp. The same for speaker wires into the amp if chosen to wire it that way.
micheal  May 05, 2017
A
Nope, comes on with the key.

Look on the end of the amp that has the two 30 amp fuses. To the right of the fuses you will see 3 hook up points. From left to right it is Battery + / Remote / Ground. Use the middle space that is labeled REM
duke  May 05, 2017
A
Yes it does. It is part of the wiring included. I've had it in my jeep for little over a year and love it.

I used an 8 Guage kit. It powers all Polk Audio component speakers in the doors and ione Polk Audio 8" sub for bass without fail. Sounds great, in my Suzuki Equator (Nissan Frontier). Hope it helps
micheal  Feb 28, 2017
A
8 gauge
robert j  Feb 28, 2017
A
The manual states "Use 8 gauge or larger automotive grade wire if the distance from the battery to the amp is excessive." I bolted mine to the side of my box in the trunk and ran the wire under the trim to the battery under the hood. I used 6 gauge (didn't use a kit, already have tons of wire and terminals) and have had no problems in a year and a half so far...
jeff  Feb 28, 2017
A
8 GAUGE is what they recommend. I always like bigger but sometimes it is just over kill. It all depends on how far the amp is from the power source. The amp has a 40 amp fuse installed in it so an 8 gauge power lead is good from 10-19 feet to support 35-50 amps. I had one of these amps and if I am not mistaken. the kit comes with connectors that accept up to 8 gauge wire.
duke  Feb 28, 2017
A
I Used 8 gauge wire and it seems fine. The amp is pretty small, and is working fine. But running 4 gauge would erase any doubts.
travis  Feb 28, 2017
A
I used 8 to wire mine up in a 2004 jeep wrangler about2 years ago and its worked perfectly no problems.
dustin  Feb 28, 2017
Q
Can this be wired 2ohm (two speakers parallel) on the front channels and 4ohm on the rear and sub channels?
alex  Jan 23, 2017
1 answer
A
The SoundStream PN5.640D is a configurable 5-channel amp that is essentially two full range 2-channel amps and one mono subwoofer amp built into one chassis. So you would have the ability to wire two pairs of speakers in parallel to 2-ohm on the front while still wiring 4-ohm speakers to the rear and/or subwoofer channels. If you would like to discuss further, feel free to contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. I hope that helps!

Q
I have a factory radio and will be using speaker level inputs. With just front and rear inputs going in do I get subwoofer out? Do I need something going in to the sub channel to use it has a 5 channel?
andrew  Dec 28, 2016
1 answer
A
You need something going into the sub channel to use it as a 5-channel amp. You can wire together the rear and sub channels to accomplish this.
jeff  Dec 31, 2016
Q
I purchased this amp a couple of months ago as part of an overhaul of my sound system. I've got the amp bridged powering Infinity REF6500CX components in the front, and a single Infinity REF6500CX 10" sub in the rear. I'm using the RCA pre outs from a Pioneer FH-X731BT. The problem I'm having is that the bass is too heavily tilted to the components. If I disconnect the subwoofer input to the amp (channel 5), I lose the bass in the component speakers as well. So it seems as though the amp is spreading out the bass signal through all the speakers instead of sending most of it back to the sub. Which functionally means the only time I actually hear the sub is when I put on something that is particularly bass-heavy. This makes no sense to me, since the amp has a dedicated 5th channel. Logically, it seems that bridging the other four channels down to two should have no effect whatsoever on the 5th channel. Is this a limitation of this device, or am I missing something? I've spent countless hours fiddling with gains, bass boost, and filters, and have gotten nowhere. If I can't resolve this problem with my current equipment, I am considering buying a monoblock for the sub. If so, could I run this as a two channel amp? I'd rather not have to replace two devices. Thanks in advance for your help.

If you have the bass set up on the 5th channelike, then it could be quite possible the problem lies within the receiver....as in turn the sub on in the head unit. I typically don't run bass thru my components.
joseph a  Oct 02, 2016
A
how many RCA cables are you using? you should be using two Cables, one for your front Speakers and one for your Subwoofer. if you have this hooked up right, by pulling out the Subwoofer input should not affect your componet Speakers. make sure you have the crossover on the amp for the front Speakers off. becuase the Componets have their own crossover already pre set. but the crossover should be on for the subwoofer, usauly 100hz or below. and see if your 0pioneer deck has a subwoofer output.

Steve asked my same question. Can I run channels 1-4 at 4 ohms, and the sub (5) at 2ohms? The answer is a bit vague, not sure if they are running everything at 2 ohms. If I have two similar Kicker subs, one 4 ohms and 150 RMS another at 2 ohms and 300 RMS.... which would match better with this amp?

This is nice and compact. But, I'm not sure how to connect the input on the fifth channel for my sub. My head unit outputs 4 channels. Can I connect the front channel right and left of my head unit to both channels 1/2 and to the fifth channel? Bob

A
You have to divide any of your channel into two output, one goes to the original channel and one goes to subwoofer output.
kushagra  Jun 08, 2016
A
I just installed the amp and it's quite easy to install but as stated in the other replies, you will need an amp install fit for this one. I had some issues getting the bass dialed in and will probably end up taking it somewhere to dial the audio in. Currently I'm getting too much bass in the front and rear speakers but not enough from the sub. Tried dialing it in myself but after an hour was only able to get something I consider satisfactory. I'm not an installation novice either. Unless you really know what you're doing, I think this amp may be a bit tricky to dial in properly. Otherwise sounds great though. Way louder than I can handle.

Are there instructions to self install?
marcel  Aug 15, 2014

A
Hi Marcel, I just installed this amplifier with an Audio Controls LC2i LOC. The basics for connecting are there but some knowledge is needed to adjust / tune it. I am not an audiophile so I had to do some research on You Tube. To be fair this seems to be a common complaint on many audio accessories, that is why I purchased from Crutchfield. In addition to the amp you will need to buy a power cable that will connect direct to the battery. This amp draws less current then most but even it needs a heavier power lead then what is connected to the cars radio. I am pleased with my purchase.
