Lots of value for the money

Thinking about going all-digital in the car? With the Soundstream SDR-342B digital media receiver, you'll never miss a beat – and you certainly won't miss those CDs sliding around on the floor.

Ordinarily, you wouldn't expect to see so many features in a single-DIN (2" tall) receiver, but Soundstream was thinking outside the box here and it shows. The SDR-342B offers an impressive array of audio and video capabilities at a very reasonable price.

Ready for digital audio – and video

When you're in the mood for music, you've got plenty of options. Built-in Bluetooth lets you stream music from a smartphone or other device, plus you'll find a USB port, an AUX input, and an SD card slot. The receiver will play MP3, AAC, AC3, and WMA files, so you can enjoy your entire collection.

The 3.4" LCD screen makes a great display for system and song info, plus you can also use it to view movies, videos, and pictures from an SD card or USB device when your car is parked.

Soundstream SDR-342B Digital Media Receiver

You'll enjoy the handy 3.4" LCD screen

Shape your sound

If you want to fine-tune your sound, this Soundstream gives you treble, bass, and loudness controls, along with 5 factory presets and a custom preset. When you decide to add a little punch to your playlist, the two sets of preamp outputs make the job of connecting outboard amps a little easier.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

    Display & Remote Features

3.4" LCD Screen: The Soundstream SDR-342B features a 3.4" color LCD screen for display of video & photo files, as well as song/artist information. The LCD screen has a resolution of 720 x 480 for 720p HD playback. The brightness of the display can be adjusted in 3-steps (low/mid/high).

Fold-down Detachable Front-Panel: The unit's front-panel must be folded-down to insert/eject a SD/SDHC memory card. You can detach the head unit's front-panel to deter theft (face case included).

Parking Brake Detection: For safety reasons, you cannot view a video source on the built-in monitor as long as the vehicle is in motion. In order to display video, the brown wire of the included harness must be hardwired into the vehicle's parking brake light circuit, and the vehicle's parking brake must be engaged.

IR Remote: The Soundstream SDR-342B includes an IR remote control for wireless operation of the digital media head unit.

    Multimedia Playback

Front-Panel SD-Card Slot: The Soundstream SDR-342B is fitted with a front-panel SD-card slot (hidden behind fold-down front-panel) that will accept SD/SDHC memory cards (up to 32GB). The unit supports playback of MP3/WMA/AAC music files, MP4/DivX/AVI video files, and JPEG photo files stored on a compatible SD/SDHC memory card.

Front-Panel USB Port: The Soundstream SDR-342B is fitted with a front-panel USB (type-A) 2.0 port for connection of a USB mass storage class device; such as your Android smartphone (Froyo/Gingerbread OS only), digital audio player, or thumbdrive. The unit supports playback of MP3/WMA/AAC music files, MP4/DivX/AVI video files, and JPEG photo files stored on a compatible USB MSC device (up to 32GB).

Note: The unit's USB port does not support Apple iPod, iPhone, or iPad.

Built-in Bluetooth: The Soundstream SDR-342B is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (version 2.0), allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles - HFP 1.4 (Hands Free Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile), A2DP 1.2 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), and AVRCP 1.3 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).

    • Hands-Free Communication (w/ external mic): The SDR-342B supports Bluetooth hands-free communication from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. You can answer an incoming call from the head unit's front-panel controls and carry on a phone conversation hands-free. The included external microphone carries on your side of the conversation while your car's speakers are used to hear the other person. You can make a call by entering a phone number from the included remote, selecting a contact from your Phonebook list, or using the Call History Log of received/dialed/missed calls.
    • Wireless Audio Streaming: The Soundstream SDR-342B allows you to play back stored music and streamed music from your Bluetooth enabled smartphone, tablet, or audio player. You can control basic music playback functions (Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track) from the VSDR-342B. Advanced music navigation will still need to be done through your Bluetooth mobile device. This unit does not display song/artist information from connected Bluetooth audio devices. When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.
Note: Before using the unit's Bluetooth functions, you must pair your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone or audio device to the VR-345. Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some mobile devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the SDR-342B.

Aux Input: The unit features a front-panel 3.5mm audio/video input for connecting a temporary external audio source, such as a MP3 player or smartphone.

    Audio & Tuner Section

MOSFET Amplifier + Preamp Outputs: The Soundstream SDR-342B is equipped with a 20W x 4-channel (RMS)/52W x 4-channel (Peak) MOSFET amplifier. The SDR-342B is also fitted with a single pair of 2-volt RCA outputs for connecting an external amplifier.

Preset EQ + Loudness: Five EQ curves are preset into memory, allowing you to recall the best preset EQ curve (User, Pop, Classic, Rock, Flat) for different types of music. The User mode allows you to independently adjust the Bass & Treble. The loudness function enhances low and high frequencies to make the sound clearer lower volumes.

Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation.

AM/FM Tuner: The Soundstream SDR-342B is equipped with an AM/FM tuner with manual, preset, seek, and scan tuning. The SDR-342B lets you store up to 18 FM and 12 AM preset stations. These presets can be stored manually or automatically. You can scan through each preset station for 5 seconds.  The built-in tuner offers both seek and scan tuning. You can manually seek stations or scan through each station for 10 seconds.

Note: The tuner features selectable North America and European tuning.

Yes you can, but my Bluetooth on the soundstream sdr-342b stopped working about a month after I purchased it.

I am not certain (because I don't have any Apple products) but I would think that it would work with an iPhone just as it does with Android phones. A word on the Bluetooth connectivity of this head unit. It does not connect every time. It is a drawback of this unit and I'm pretty disappointed with it. However, when it does connect, it is awesome. Call sound clarity is excellent. background noise cancelling is excellent on receiver's end. It is best if before you start your vehicle that you disengage the faceplate. Make certain that Bluetooth on your phone is on then engage the faceplate and power the unit on. This is how I get the bluetooth to work on the unit. It's a pain and in retrospect I with I would have purchased the Pioneer BT head unit.

never tried as i do not use apple products that often. Its a great BASIC radio... a little hard for setting stuff up but for a basic radio, it suits just fine. It worked with my phones bluetooth, but the range was maybe 20 feet.
    derek  Oct 30, 2015
    A
Of course. Bluetooth is a cross-platform technology, so if you have a radio with Bluetooth in your car, you can connect any Bluetooth-enable device (Apple, Android) to it.

Yes, it's a typical USB port and can be used just like the port on your computer. BUT... be aware that this stereo DOES NOT HAVE A CD PLAYER. This is an important detail that I somehow missed when I bought mine. I did not know that there was ANY brand selling car stereos WITHOUT a CD!!! It was an unpleasant surprise so maybe I can help you avoid the same. Otherwise, it's an awesome system! Thanks
