Overview

Our take on the Soundstream VDVD-165

If you want to add video capabilities to your vehicle, you've got a couple of choices. You could change the stock receiver to a DVD or multimedia receiver, or you can add a stand-alone DVD player like the Soundstream VDVD-165 to your system. Each route has its own advantages, but in many cases you may prefer to go with a stand-alone player — for example, it's a great choice if you're putting a system into an RV.

Soundstream VDVD-165

You can mount the VDVD-165 in the dash or use the included brackets for other locations.

Just what you need

Soundstream designed the VDVD-165 as a video jack-of-all-trades. Just add a screen and an amp and this player is ready to go as the heart of your vehicle's A/V system — and at a very attractive price, too. You can mount this Soundstream in the single-DIN (2" tall) opening in your dash above or below your factory radio, so it can deliver the DVD signal to your rear screens. Or you can use the supplied brackets to mount it on a variety of flat surfaces, wherever you've got space in your vehicle.

The player comes with a remote control and an IR repeater, so you can take charge of the system when you're out of line of sight. In addition to the front DVD slot, you'll find a convenient USB input. So if you're not watching a movie, you can check out vacation photos or listen to MP3 music files.

Excellent product at the right price. Will recommend it to anyone. No nonsense player offering both NTSC/PAL formats.

    2010 Porsche Panamera
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this DVD player to compliment a pair of cheap 10" rear seat entertainment screens with built-in DVD players. The problem with the cheap units is that they did not have any onboard memory to remember where the DVD was stopped at when the car was turned off so every time I started the car the DVD started over from the beginning. No so with this player. It has onboard memory and does a fantastic job of remembering where you left off when you turn the car off and quickly picks right back up again when you key on and power up. I didn't mount this in the DIN slot but I remote mounted it so I can't comment on that aspect but one thing to note is that the player color is actually a dark metallic gray and not black as it looks in the pictures. The remote is nice, compact and easy to use and has good range. I haven't needed to install the remote IR receiver. No issues with skipping either and I have the unit mounted vertically to the transmission tunnel in the passenger foot well within easy reach of the driver.

Pros: Cost, included mounting brackets, useful remote control, and onboard memory to restart movies where they were stopped even through a key cycle.

Cons: None that I have found yet.

    Excellent for the price

    2001 Chevrolet Suburban
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I used this to replace an out-dated VHS system in my older suburban. Super easy to install running the video rca line directly to screen and the audio rca to 3.5mm input on the rear of the stereo so the audio functions through the vehicle speakers. You will need to wire into vehicle hot wire for a custom install. But if you want a quick install, you can purchase the appropriate 12v adapter to simply plug in.

Pros: - Easy to install - As described - Simple functionality...much easier and simplistic than navigating detailed menus of newer car systems Quick off/on and resumes where movie left off

Cons: - installed for a few weeks and none so far!

Not sure. I would not buy this product. I have had one in my charter bus for less than a year and am going to have to buy a 30.00 local one to replace it because it will not suck in the DVD. I sent the one I ordered for a second bus back because it did not work correctly out of the box. Got a local one on that bus 30.00. Still working. Hope this is helpful. [ KEVIN H  Mar 30, 2014 ]
