Our take on the Soundstream VR-345

by Ken Nail
Soundstream

DVD receivers: They're not just for movies

DVD receivers add a new level of entertainment to your vehicle. You can watch a movie on the screen when you're parked on a Saturday night, or play a DVD through your rear seat video setup on the road. Touchscreen receivers allow you to breeze through menus with the tip of your finger. Most DVD receivers feature a USB input for audio from your iPod, and the ability to add an adapter that allows video to display on the screen. Some receivers even offer connections for a center speaker and a subwoofer, so you can build a full-fledged theater in your car, just like at home.

Mighty mite

Sure, Soundstream built the VR-345 to fit into a 2" tall (single-DIN) dash opening, but just one look at its display tells you that they were definitely thinking outside the box when they designed this sharp-looking DVD receiver. It'll play just about anything under the sun, and it offers a comprehensive set of audio/video capabilities. You can even detach the display to keep potential thieves at bay.

Ready for your video and audio

The receiver's 3.4" LCD screen makes a great display for system and song info, and you can also use it to view movies and video from DVDs and other sources when your car is parked. If you want to take your show on the road, connect a video screen to the receiver's A/V output and keep your passengers entertained during those long road trips. The receiver will play any MP4 and DivX video that you've loaded onto an SD card, USB device, or DVD. You can connect the outputs from a Soundstream headrest or overhead monitor to this receiver's A/V inputs, so everybody can watch the same movie when you're parked.

When you're in the mode for music, you can slide in just about any disc, even a recordable DVD loaded with music files. And the SD card slot, USB port, and auxiliary input offer plenty of other ways to check out your favorite media. Want to add some punch to your soundtracks? This Soundstream includes preamp outputs for connecting outboard amps.

Parking Brake Detection: For safety reasons, you cannot view a video source on the built-in monitor as long as the vehicle is in motion. In order to display video, the brown wire of the included harness must be hardwired into the vehicle's parking brake light circuit, and the vehicle's parking brake must be engaged.

4ch/2V Preamp Outputs:  The VR-345 is fitted with front & rear 2-volt RCA outputs to connect an external amplifier with fader control.

Preset EQ: Five EQ curves are preset into memory, allowing you to recall the best preset EQ curve (User, Pop, Classic, Rock, Jazz) for different types of music. The User mode allows you to independently adjust the Bass & Treble.

Rear-View Camera Input: The Camera Input consists of a Composite video RCA jack for connecting an optional rear-view back-up camera (sold separately). This RCA input enables you to connect a rear-view camera to display the area behind your vehicle. The increased view encourages and facilitates safer driving. When an optional rearview camera is connected to this unit, the rear view image is displayed on the screen when your vehicle is placed in reverse gear (pink wire of harness must be connected to reverse light wire of vehicle). Automatic video switching takes approximately 1.9 seconds. Audio from your music source will continue playing, while the back-up camera is displayed.

    Horrific! Avoid at all costs!

Written By SouthPh1lly, South Philadelphia, PA on Sunday, May 18, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed the unit and within a month it broke. The cheap plastic clips that hold the face plate broke off. The next day the face plate stopped working. I called the lackluster tech support from Soundstream and was talked to like a five year old. Finally, they agree to an RMA and require me to send them a $20 money order along with the stereo. I send them the stereo and then I hear nothing. I have to call them multiple times to and I finally get a hold of someone. The person who I spoke to at Soundstream said that the stereo is fixed and will be sent out 'soon'. Fast forward two weeks and without warning UPS shows up at my house with the stereo. Good news right? I go out to my Hummer and install it and it does not work. It does not work! Soundstream repaired the cheap plastic clips and that is it. Are you kidding me? Thank God I bought a Square Trade warranty. I will never purchase, nor will I ever let a friend, or even the devil buy a Soundstream product. If anyone from Soundstream is reading this you should be ashamed for treating customers this way. You should be ashamed for selling inferior products. Your product is bad and you should feel bad. Calling Soundstream tech support could be used as a torture technique in Guantanamo Bay.
    Pros:
    It came from Crutchfield.
    Cons:
    1. The unit is made poorly 2. The plastic components feel cheap. 3. Lack of customization in the display. 4. Very limited sound options. 5. Their customer service is akin to calling the IRS 6. The warranty repair is a joke. 7. It is a Soundstream, seriously save yourself and do not make a mistake of buying one of these units.

Problems within 1 year and no response from Soundstream

Written By Jason J., Montpelier, VA on Saturday, May 10, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

At first I was very pleased with this head unit. After about ten months, the display an controls on the unit itself stopped working. The remote control works, and the display to rear screens is still good. Using the reset button behind the faceplate brought the built in display and controls back into operation. But a few days later, same scenario. Now I have to reset it every few hours if I expect the faceplate display or controls to function.

Over the past month I have sent two emails and left on voice message for Soundstream support/repairs. No responses at all.

I expect service to be a part of a companies operations. This does not seem to matter to Soundstream. I could not recommend this to anyone.

I was as pleased as some of the other reviewers at first, but I would have expected more than one year of operation. When that failed, I would have expected a response from the company.

Getting neither of the two, I must warn others, caveat emptor. Buyer's beware. This one let me down in product and company.

I will continue to buy from Crutchfield, but I will probably never spend my money on a Soundstream product.
    Pros:
    Worked for ten months.
    Cons:
Stopped working and no support or response from manufacturer after multiple attempts via email and phone over the course of 30 days. My one year warranty will expire soon. I guess they will not even have any obligations after that...

Works well for back up camera

Written By Al, Arlington, TX on Monday, January 20, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this for use with my back up camera, plus my 2004 Mitsubishi Infinity stereo stopped working. This stereo is one of the few single Din units that has two sets of audio outputs to interface with my Mitsubishi Sun and Sound package Infinity amps and subwoofer. This feature allowed easy hookup to my amp and subwoofer, so kudos for that. It works great. The video works great for automatic switching to the back up camera when the car is put in reverse. There is the usual few seconds delay to bring the video up when in reverse, like all other units. The video screen has lots of reflection in the sunlight making it hard to see the back up camera image sometimes. I have a hard time remembering which buttons to use for any given function. Like many modern units they combine lots of features into a few buttons. Overall this unit does exactly what I wanted.
    Pros:
Video for back up camera. Two audio outputs for subwoofer.
    Cons:
Too many functions for too few buttons.

    New DVD Receiver

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Low end on the cost scale but perfect for my needs. Crutchfield was, as always very helpful with a specific to my model truck installation question. Some of you may want more features and bigger screen, but the SD card, USB inputs for music and video if you want to go that way are great. Excellent EQ adjustment menu and plenty of presets for me. Remote is better interface than faceplate.

Pretty Good Radio For the Money

Written By Moms Mabley, St. Louis Missouri on Wednesday, December 18, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After Having this player for a couple of months, the basic thing that I see wrong is its inability to play from a flash drive, USB device such as MP3 player. I have not contacted technical support yet about this issue, so I can't speak from experience.
    Pros:
I had thought that I would have to buy new speakers with this system, and possibly add an amplifier. But it sounds great to my wife, whose cars that it is installed in. It looks good to her, and she loves the ability to build her own soundtracks and play them back via DVD player.
    Cons:
Right now after having owned this unit for a couple of months, my wife just today decided to try and use the USB port, after putting a flash drive to the poor the playlist came up, but read illegal key. I am just now beginning to research and try to find out what the problem is.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Decent device, surprisingly sharp screen and no complaints with the audio quality - much better than stock pioneer system. major issue with mp3s...
    Pros:
good sound quality easy to use menus very nice display great value awesome crutchfield tech support
    Cons:
Will not read more than a couple hundred songs. Tried multiple combos, device can and will read my 16gb and 32gb cards, but only if i have less than about 400 songs. Makes supporting anything larger than a 2gb card pointless.... unfortunately for me, the entire reason I chose this was for the hidden sd slot to load my entire music collection on. also, a lot of the controls require the remote. a bit unrealistic while driving.

Ok for the price, but picking up AM radio signal is poor. My stock radio did much better. I like the fact that it can play DVD and CD which is what I was looking for and like I said the price is very good. The installation was very easy, it was just a plug-and-play for me.
    Pros:
    Good sounds
    Cons:
    Poor radio signal pickup

Bought this deck for my 05' Ram 1500. Had some trouble with the unit fitting in the bracket but after I filed it down the unit slipped right in. Other then that every thing is very straight forward takes all but 20min to hook up the wires and plug it in. The video quality is good and the sound quality is 100x better then the factory unit and the price is very affordable. I would definitely recommend this product.

    Flawed Design

Written By Terry, Ventnor, NJ on Tuesday, August 20, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Looks aren't everything. This probably has the best display for a single-DIN anywhere, but that's where the good part ends for me. It can take a 32GB USB drive, but it wouldn't see 5.15GB of music files. I had to reduce that to under 4 to get it to work at all. Random (Shuffle) has to be selected every time you start your car (USB is already in the unit). 90% of my library is .WMA files. When this unit plays them, it skips the 1st full second of play. MP3's no problem. My Sansa+ Clip plays more efficiently than this does, and that's 4 years old. I meant for this head unit to replace that, but it looks like I'll be returning it. Called Soundstream's customer support, but you're transferred to voice mail. Emailed Soundstream's tech support for "a quicker reply", haven't had a response in two days.
    Pros:
Brilliant display. Full graphics that you would only see on higher end Double-DIN units.
    Cons:
Shuffle settings won't stay when restarting the unit. Poor .WMA playback. Nonsensical file limitations on USB connection. No information in manual nor online about USB limits beyond 32GB limit shown.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This head unit is just as good as the $300 ones. the video quality is pretty good for such a small screen. kind of hard to learn at first but once you know it, it is fun to play with. the music setting like bass and treble are very simple so not very good for those car-audio maniacs.
    Pros:
Very inexpensive and worth every penny.
    Cons:
not for car audio addicts who mess with HPF/LPF all the time.

    2001 Grand Marquis

Written By gatso48, Madison, OH on Wednesday, July 17, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am more than satisfied with this unit - extremely versatile. This registered as a "modified fit," owing largely to the need to cut out the back of the Grand Marquis stereo receptacle to accommodate the Soundstream's depth. This was not necessary--fits just fine.
    Pros:
Receives CD, DVD, USB, SD..., vivid color and clarity, potent blue accent lighting, remote is comprehensive
    Cons:

    1 question already asked

it says not compatible with iphone or ipod. does that mean it wont play music at all from them? [ clay hawthorn  Dec 09, 2013 ]
    3 answers
    • It has an auxiliary plug on the front so it will play off your iPod or iPhone , I personally use the USB port myself , I actually bought a 64 gig flash drive holds like 10,000 songs so hope this answers helps [ MONTE   Dec 11, 2013 ]
    • It will play through an aux cable. But not a charging cord. U need a flash drive with music for the USB slot. [ JACOB K   Dec 10, 2013 ]
    • It will play music from them if you plug it into the input jack and select that mode on the radio. You can't control any functions from the radio to your ipod or from your ipod to your radio so you simply use your ipod or iphone controls to choose and play your songs. [ EDWARD   Dec 10, 2013 ]
