About the Soundstream VR-345B

Dave Delamere

Big features, small chassis

Soundstream's VR-345B DVD receiver gives you a gorgeous 3.4" fold-down LCD display in a smaller single-DIN (2" tall) chassis that can fit a wide variety of vehicles. Combine that with DVD/CD playback, Bluetooth®, and a front USB port, and you've got a little receiver with a huge multimedia upside.

Bluetooth means wireless

Bluetooth provides you hands-free calling convenience, plus a wireless connection to the songs stored on your compatible smartphone. Soundstream built in a sensitive built-in Bluetooth microphone for your calls, located on the receiver's faceplate for a simpler installation.

Ready for your video and audio

Soundstream's 3.4" LCD screen makes a great display for system and song info, and you can also use it to view movies and video from DVDs and other sources when your car is parked. If you want to take your show on the road, connect a video screen to the video output on the VR-345B and keep your passengers entertained. The receiver will play any MP4 video that you've loaded onto a USB device or DVD.

When you're in the mood for music, you can slide in just about any disc, even a recordable DVD loaded with music files. The USB port and auxiliary input offer plenty of other ways to check out all your media. Want to add some punch to your soundtracks? This Soundstream includes five EQ presets for quick tone changes, and two sets of preamp outputs for connecting outboard amps.

    Display & Remote Features

    Audio/Video Section

    Display & Remote Features

3.4" LCD Screen: The Soundstream VR-345B features a 3.4" color LCD screen for display of video & photo files, as well as song/artist information. The brightness of the display can be adjusted in 3-steps (low/mid/high).

Parking Brake Detection: For safety reasons, you cannot view a video source on the built-in monitor as long as the vehicle is in motion. In order to display video, the pink wire of the included harness must be hardwired into the vehicle's parking brake light circuit, and the vehicle's parking brake must be engaged.

Fold-down Detachable Front-Panel: The unit's front-panel must be folded-down to insert or eject a disc. You can detach the head unit's front-panel to deter theft (no face case is included).

IR Remote: The Soundstream VR-345B includes an IR remote control for wireless operation of the multimedia unit.

    Variety Of Sources

Disc Compatibility: The head unit's front-panel must be folded down to insert or eject a disc. The Soundstream VR-345B supports playback of DVD-Video, DVD-R/RW, CD-Audio and CD-R/RW discs. The unit can play back MP3/WMA music files and MP4 video files recorded onto a compatible DVD-R/RW or CD-R/RW disc.

Front-Panel USB Port: The Soundstream VR-345B is fitted with a front-panel USB (type-A) 2.0 port for connection of a USB mass storage class device; such as select digital audio players or thumbdrives. The unit supports playback of MP3/WMA music files, MP4 video files, and JPEG photo files stored on a compatible USB MSC device (up to 32GB).

Note: The unit's USB port does not support Apple iOS or Android OS devices.

Built-In Bluetooth: The Soundstream VR-345B is equipped with built-in Bluetooth 4.0 - allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver, as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit.

    • Hands-Free Communication (w/ integrated mic): The VR-345B supports Bluetooth hands-free communication from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. You can answer an incoming call from the head unit's front-panel controls and carry on a phone conversation hands-free. An integrated front-panel microphone carries on your side of the conversation while your car's speakers are used to hear the other person. You can make a call by entering a phone number or using the Call History Log of received/dialed/missed calls. This unit does not support voice dial or phonebook transfer.
    • Wireless Audio Streaming: The Soundstream VR-345B allows you to play back stored music and streamed music from your Bluetooth enabled smartphone, tablet, or audio player. You can control basic music playback functions (Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track) from the VR-345B. Advanced music navigation will still need to be done through your Bluetooth mobile device. This unit does not display song/artist information from connected Bluetooth audio devices. When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

    Notes:

    • Before using the unit's Bluetooth functions, you must pair your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone or audio device to the VR-345. Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some mobile devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the VR-345B.
    • You cannot add an external microphone to this head unit.

AM/FM Tuner: The Soundstream VR-345B is equipped with an AM/FM tuner with manual, preset, seek, and scan tuning. If an analog FM stereo broadcast is hard to receive, you can manually switch the tuner to Mono operation.

    • Preset Stations w/ Preset Scan: The VR-345B lets you store up to 18 FM and 12 AM preset stations. These presets can be stored manually or automatically. You can scan through each preset station for 5 seconds.
    • Seek/Scan: The built-in tuner offers both seek and scan tuning. You can manually seek stations or scan through each station for 10 seconds.
    Audio/Video Section

Built-In Amplifier + Pre-Outs: The Soundstream VR-345B is equipped with a 20W x 4-channel (RMS)/75W x 4-channel (Peak) MOSFET amplifier.   The VR-345B is also outfitted with front & rear 2-volt RCA outputs to connect an external amplifier with fader control.

    • Preset EQ: Five EQ curves are preset into memory, allowing you to recall the best preset EQ curve (User, Pop, Classic, Rock, Jazz) for different types of music. The User mode allows you to independently adjust the Bass & Treble.
    • Loudness: This function enhances low and high frequencies to make the sound clearer lower volumes.
    • Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation.

Front-Panel Aux Input: The unit features a front-panel 3.5mm Aux input for connecting a temporary external analog audio source, such as a MP3 player. The Aux input does not support video.

Video Out: A single RCA composite video-output jack allows you to add an external monitor such as rear headrest monitor (sold separately). The video output will display whatever image is being being displayed on the head unit's touchscreen monitor. This includes the warning "Video Is Disabled For Your Safety" when trying to watch video from a DVD or USB without the vehicle's parking brake engaged. You will need to engage the vehicle's parking brake to see video from these sources through the head units' video output.

Rear-View Camera Input: The Camera Input consists of a Composite video RCA jack for connecting an optional rear-view back-up camera (sold separately). This RCA input enables you to connect a rear-view camera to display the area behind your vehicle. The increased view encourages and facilitates safer driving. When an optional rearview camera is connected to this unit, the rear view image is displayed on the screen when your vehicle is placed in reverse gear (orange wire of harness must be connected to reverse light wire of vehicle). Automatic video switching takes approximately 1.9 seconds.

Do all the lights go out when you turn it off?

    A
The lights do not go off when turned off. It automatically goes to Demo mode where the screen displays all the features of the radio, i.e.: AM, FM, CD, etc. It is dimly lit during this mode. When you hit the power button, it lights up brightly and automatically goes to the last function you were in. I am old school, I wish the unit would go completely dark except for the clock.

Hi Carl, The simplest answer is that it does. Now just in case you need more detail I'll add the following: 1.-When you shut the unit down by the power switch the only thing left illuminated is the power button and nothing else. 2. -When you shut off and leave your vehicle everything including the power switch if off. Hope that helps. Take care, -Chuck

If I am correct, it is a standard 1 din size. I installed it in my dodge truck which has a 1 1/2 din sized radio installed from the factory. I had to use a fitment plate that was included in my package. You can go online and Google it and get all the specs you need.

buy a wiring harness that plugs into your wiring harness and splices into the new radio harness and it might need a conversion module
    robert f  Mar 23, 2015
    A
I don't think so. On our 2008 jeep Cherokee we only had to connect the proper adapter harness to the new Crutchfield unit and then plug into the Jeep factory harness for the unit. Our unit came with adapter harness'. It's pretty easy. It's pretty easy. You can ate up the adapter wires with connectors or solder. We soldered and insulbated well. The directions are easy to follow and tech support is good if you need it. Works great.

No, unfortunately the only way to establish the presets is with the remote. It's not the end of the world, but there are particular functions on the unit that require the remote. I find this unfortunate but that's just the way this unit is designed.
    richard  Mar 13, 2015
    A
No you can't. It's the one downside I have seen with this head unit. Once you have set them with the remote you can easily change between them using the buttons on the face.

    melvin  May 29, 2019

As long as you wire in the appropriate wire from the head unit into the vehicle's wiring loom correctly, the screen will auto switch. I found the correct instructions either from Crutchfield or on the web (or perhaps both). In my Suburban, there's a junction box to splice into just below the parking brake pedal, so it was quite easy.
    lewis  Mar 06, 2015
    A
It has an input that you connect to the reverse light or other wire that gets power when putting in reverse. The unit then automatically switches to show the backup camera.

    Q
Concerning the hands free calling feature, is there a MIC on this unit or an optional one to purchase separately? I read the manual online and there is no reference to there being a Microphone on this unit. What do you speak into during call?

There is a mic in the unit. I'm nearly positive it's the tiny hole to the top left of the dial. The only time I've had trouble with it is when I'm driving on the freeway, the extra noise makes it hard for people to hear me.

there is a mic on the front panel and it works ok during calls if there is not a lot of extra noise inside your vehicle. There are no extra inputs for a external mic.

I honestly don't know what mic it is using. Maybe it's using the phones. However it works nobody has complained they can't hear me. On a side note. This unit is easiest to control with the remote.

After installing this unit, I have found the radio reception to be very poor. Is this a common trait of this model or is there something I could do to improve it?

Hi Shaun, I had this SoundStream unit in my car for about a month & I came to the same conclusion. The tuner performance simply isn't sufficient. It was far below the reception quality of the original equipment unit it replaced. The BlueTooth was great, the unending source of audio sources was great, the video was a bit of a novelty but it might have been useful for a back-up cam. I never tried it. The displays were nice (except for the blue halo). It has "Scan" tuning, something I can't live without. But the tuner performance & the inability to use all of the unit's features through the front panel (some functions require the remote) led me to return the unit. I replaced it with the Blaupunkt Toronto420. Not as sexy as the SoundStream but the tuner is on-par with the OEM receiver. It also has seek/scan tuning. I gave up video but I wasn't really interested in video anyway. A 3" video display just doesn't cut it. I'm much happier with the Blaupunkt. The Blaupunkt is not without it's faults but overall I'm satisfied with it's performance. I now have 2 of them. If you want video plus acceptable FM tuning take a look at the Blaupunkt San Diego double-din. I considered this for one of my cars but the price tag made it a no-go. Very nice unit if you're after video. Hope this is helpful.

I too have noticed slightly diminished radio reception but to be fair I live in an area with terrible radio reception to begin with. Seems my factory unit had better reception but I will say that my Soundstream unit got great reception during a recent trip to a metropolitan area where the stations I listen too are broadcasting from.

Oh dear, mine doesn't have super great reception either. Maybe it IS a trait :/ I thought it was just me & the fact that I went from an HD radio to this. Drat.

I would check your antenna connection to the head unit. I have great reception with this unit.

I don't have bad reception unless I go I to a ditch but try grounding your battery in three different places and the ground wire from the unit to two different metal parts as well as the normal ground wiring. It will lose the static and be a safety for shorting

The owner's manual gives a poor description of the "Dual Zone Mode" at the bottom of Page 16. Before I purchase this model, can someone explain how this feature actually works? I would like to listen to Bluetooth music on all 4 speakers while the DVD plays to a TV with headphones in the rear compartment. (Some units mute the rear speakers in "Dual Zone Mode".)

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: The Soundstream VR-345B DVD Receiver is not a dual zone receiver. It does have a video output for feeding a rear seat entertainment system, but it will not function in the manner requested. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.

The unit doesn't diplay anything from your phone. It's a simple Bluetooth connection. What you play on your phone streams to the unit. It does immediately connect once paired ( talking included). For the price it's been a great unit. Do understand that use is easier via the remote.

Ok so I have two questions. One I saw it said no iPod control but if I connect my iPhone via USB will it play music, AND most importantly charge my iPhone? Two it has a display so if (and can) I connect a back up camera to it so it can display as I reverse.

My USB is kinda messed up when I got mine so I just use the head phone jack and your iPod will charge, and it does have the wire to hook up a back up camera. There are a couple flaws with mine but I'm pretty satisfied with it. Hope I helped

As for iPhone, I use the Bluetooth connection and a car charger. The interface is pretty nice and this alows you to use the hands free calling built into the unit if you take a call. The remote will control the iPhone music app when synced. Also let's the navigation play through the head unit. It has a USB connection so I suppose you could plug your cable into it and charge your phone. For the camera, it has an A/V input and it should be compatible with most backup cameras. You'll just have to wire it specifically for your camera option. Hope this helps!

It DOES charge but its a very small current so when I had it running GPS and streaming music the battery did not charge but it drained slower than usual. I'd suggest getting a high capacity car charger in addition to this (I got mine for like $6 on amazon) and if the music is stored on your phone in mp3 format it should play it via USB just fine. As to your second question, YES you can connect a back up cam to it and it will display on the screen.

Yes to the backup camera. RE the iPod control, not sure about that. But you can connect your phone to the radio via bluetooth.

You can hook a backup camera to the unit. You have to hook up to the wire that says rear camera that will hook directly into your reverse light. Also you can hook up a phone via Bluetooth but it won't charge that way I havent tried USB but I can try and let you know.

Just got this installed in my 1997 mercury tracer, tried to call for support but too late. Can't get the video to show on the screen. Displayed "warning! enjoy sound only when driving". What do you suggest?

the video will only show on screen when the parking park is set and the transmission is in park. This is set up so you don't watch TV while driving.
