Multimedia haven

Take one look at the touchscreen controls on Soundstream's VR-622HB DVD receiver, and you'll quickly realize that it gives you lots of ways to enjoy your music and video. Its sharp 6.2" display provides a simple menu to access your entertainment on DVD, CD, USB, and AM/FM radio. The VR-622HB also supplies robust power, Bluetooth® connectivity, and their MobileLink™ feature to integrate your smartphone.

MobileLink for your smartphone

Soundstream's MobileLink™ function displays your phone's screen information on the receiver's big screen, providing you an easier way to see your apps at a glance. You can check out turn-by-turn directions from your navigation apps, as well as artist and track info from your music apps. You'll use your smartphone to control the apps, but you can check them out on the receiver's larger 6.2" display.

The VR-622HB's MobileLink uses the receiver's rear HDMI input to display your smartphone's apps, while the rear USB port charges your phone. Here's what you need depending on your smartphone:

Wireless convenience

Bluetooth gives you hands-free calling convenience, plus a wireless connection to the songs stored on your compatible music player. Soundstream built in a sensitive front-panel microphone that's close to you, so callers can hear you loud and clear.

Added cool stuff

You can play your MP3 music using the VR-622HB's front USB input or the DVD/CD player. Once you've picked your music, you can tweak it with the five EQ presets. You can also use the two sets of preamp outputs to add amps to your system for more power.

Use the VR-622HB's front analog audio/video input to hook up your favorite portable audio player, game console, or another video source. This receiver provides two video outputs to send movies to rear video screens, so you can keep the backseat crew happy. You'll appreciate the input for a rear-view camera — helpful for when you're maneuvering your vehicle in tight spaces.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

I purchase two radios of this brand. Needed blue tooth in two cars. AFter having them installed, the sound was not good. Also blue tooth would not work. Ipod would not play when connected. Sending them back. I could see if only one radio malfunctioned but both had problems.

    Pros: None

Cons: Sound not good, ipod would not play, bluetooth would not work.

You have to consider the price when reviewing this item. You get very good value for what you pay, and I paid the full price as I was one of the first one to purchase this unit before the price break. For the price, the unit is great. I have a very good camera attached to it and it works flawlessly when backing up. It sound great with the factory Bose system in the Suburban. It allows you to have upto 32GB of music on a USB stick at your fingertips via the front port. The navigation between menus is very basic and you don't have a lot of control when navigating them but for a basic unit, I can't complain.

Pros: Lots of features for the price USB port on front fascia HDMI input Multiple RCA Inputs

Cons: Simple Controls Very basic functionality

Has all the features, but NONE of them work right. Nobody can understand you on Bluetooth. Cannot navigate music on USB. Doesn't always couple on Bluetooth. Does not charge an iPhone. Clock gains 20 minutes a day. Plays streaming bluetooth music, but you have no control over what it plays. Overall, it is complete junk. On the bright side, Cruchfield support it great and allows you to return it and buy something that works!

    Pros: Has rear hdml input

Cons: None, and I mean NONE of the features work right.

This unit would be a good economical solution for someone replacing a very basic stock unit. As I am upgrading from a decent stock unit it was a bit of a let down. It is just too simple in function and features.

    Pros: price

I was informed that I could plug my iPhone into it. As it turns out you need to purchase over $100 of adapters to make it work. Stinks that I installed it and it is no better than the stock radio

    Pros: dvd

This unit is lackluster at best. Screen is hard to read in sun and night (too bright). Screen is very slow to react to touch. My unit kept freezing up to the point where the car had to be shut off to fix the freeze. The tuner is awful although the amp with a clean source is very good. I got the iPhone cable for mobile link and that was ok but it did not even keep the iphone battery up let alone charge it. The Hands free was ok half the time, the other half the voice in and out was digitized so badly you could not decipher the conversation.

Pros: Good powerful amp. Mobile Link was ok. Installation was easy and Crutchfield's customer service is second to none.

Cons: Tuner is awful. wont charge the iphone 4S. Hands free is bad. Unit freezes up.

I bought this radio and installed it in my F-150. In the usual Crutchfield fashion, the required instructions and material were more than adequate. The screenshots on the website do not accurately reflect the UI installed on the unit. Had the appropriate screenshots been provided, I likely would not have purchased. The radio is functional for the price, but beware if you are using the provided screenshots as an indication of what you are purchasing.

Pros: Decent sound quality. Easy installation and setup.

Cons: Software is not aesthetically pleasing.

Everything about this stereo seems to be as advertised. Installation was smooth, options are all there. For the price it is a good unit so far. My expectations were not very high at this price point.

Pros: Quick and easy install, easy to connect Bluetooth, sound quality is good.

Cons: Screen is washed out in the sun and very bright at night. Even the cheapest nav systems auto dim.

    Works as advertised

Very nice all the way around. Good sound and quality. Would buy again for same price. The usb port doesn't play well with I-phone, but good with Galaxy... more than likely apple issue, not the radio.. but can't say for sure. Blue tooth works great though. Seems like the remote should work at a greater distance than it does, but I don't expect to use that very much.

Pros: O.S. is nice and intuitive. Easy to operate. Nice quality and sound.

Cons: Installed in 2001 cavalier. Installation brackets seemed weak and generic. Trouble with Iphone through USB port. You have to be very close and line of sight with the remote.

It was a easy instalation. The only thing that really troubled me was the back up camera. I had it connected and then it wasn't working then to find out I had to connect the radio to the reverse gear too. Very easy to use. I had it for about 3 months and it stoped working as in it blew up in my car. But I just told soundstream and they said send it back we will give u a new one and that's what they did. It's a very nice radio. Easy to use and very cheap. I have the smartphone adapter coming it by mail so I can't wait to use that. I'm still trying to figure out how to out a subwoofer in. This radio doesn't say how.

Pros: Easy cheap and reliable company

Cons: None it's a perfect product

I got this unit to replace one that I had recently gotten from Crutchfield that had connection issues with my Galaxy S5 over bluetooth. The bluetooth worked well on this unit as far as connectivity goes. That was my best experience with this unit. The mobilelink doesn't always work and if you do want to be able to see anything well your phone has to be displaying in landscape format (there may be a setting for that, but I didn't bother to try and find it). The screens are very basic which is fine for a unit in this price range. My big complaint with this stereo was the sound quality. The "equalizer" is pretty much non existent. It's pretty much what you'd find on a stock radio- treble and bass + or -. There are a few presets but there's only so much you can do with that kind of set up. The volume controls seemed to like to jump and I did the majority of my volume control through my phone so that I could have some kind of control over it. The unit had a very empty sound and sometimes sounded like poor radio reception. There were a few times listening to some music the hi hats sounded like maracas. I had seen a review on another website for this product that mentioned a similar experience and I thought it was possibly their speakers but going straight from another unit to this one, it is the head unit.

Pros: Pretty simple to use and connects to bluetooth

Cons: Bad Sound quality No customization (sound or display) Poor volume controls Poor radio reception Inconsistent functionality of mobile link

I installed this thing in my truck and tried to use my iPhone 5 with it. After buying around $80 worth of adapters and cables to connect it, it wouldn't stay connected and the screen just flickered. I would have to reset the unit to make it work again. The bluetooth connection wouldn't stay connected either, with poor sound quality too. I was genuinely disappointed with Soundstream, as they used to be known as a "better than average" product, about 20 years ago.. Couldn't return this thing fast enough...

Pros: It is a less expensive DVD player

Cons: Geeze, too many to list

I installed this unit in a 2003 Silverado. I also bought the cable assembly to retain the factory alert tones. (highly recommended) The unit was fairly easy to install and fit nicely in the existing opening. I had to call the support number for help with the cable harness, one of the wires was not clearly labeled. The 'power antenna' wire needed to be connected to the 'internal amp trigger' wire to get sound from the speakers. The support team was very helpful in getting me pointed in the right direction. (THANKS)

Pros: Touch screen is great. Easy to navigate between menus.

Cons: No control over the user interface look and feel. (button layout, color, and wallpaper ect.) Time and date display is very poor and does not display unless the unit is turned on so you loose you clock.

First, I'm not an audiophile. But this thing seems to have everything I could want and more. Screens are very intuitive. Bluetooth works perfectly. Hands free calling is great, and the built in mic seems to pick up my voice without having to shout. I couldn't be happier. Had to call the Cruthfield tech support 3 times during installation. They answered every time within a minute, and told me everything I needed quickly. Install took a couple hours, but I was taking my time. Probably could have done it in half that. Very, very pleased with this unit.

    Pros: Feature packed.

Cons: You have to buy an additional adapter if you want to display your smartphone screen on the unit's screen. It''s $50 bucks, so I decided against it for now.

    Touchscreen & Remote Features

6.2" LCD Touchscreen: The Soundstream VR-622HB features a 6.2" LCD touchscreen monitor (800x480) with LED backlighting. This unit's touchscreen controls with interactive video graphics make menu navigation simple and intuitive. You can adjust the screen's brightness.

Hard-Key Controls: There are also push-button controls along either side of the LCD touchscreen monitor, including a 3-way rotary dial.

Parking Brake Detection: For safety reasons, you cannot view a video source on the built-in monitor as long as the vehicle is in motion. In order to display video, the pink wire of the included harness must be hardwired into the vehicle's parking brake light circuit, and the vehicle's parking brake must be engaged.

2-DIN Chassis: The VR-622HB has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as "Double-DIN"), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets, or Euro-mounted using the supplied mounting sleeve. As always, please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to verify fit with your vehicle.

Remote Control: The Soundstream VR-622HB includes a 40-button IR remote control for wireless operation of the multimedia unit. The head unit also features an OEM steering wheel remote control input that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with the Farenheit or Metra ASCW-1 Steering Wheel Control Interface (sold separately).

    Smartphone Integration

MobileLink Input: The Soundstream VR-622HB features a rear-panel HDMI audio/video input and USB charging port (max 0.5A) for connection of select Apple iOS devices and MHL-enabled Samsung smartphones. You'll be able to listen to audio from stored music and music apps, watch video from stored movies and movie apps, and view navigation apps on your compatible Apple iOS or MHL-enabled smartphone, using the head unit's HDMI input and USB charging port (know as the "MobileLink" input). The HDMI connection provides the audio/video playback, while the USB connection charges your compatible Apple iOS or Android device (max 0.5A). Even though the VR-622HB will mirror the display of your connected device, it will not allow you to operate playback functions of your mobile device; you will still continue to use your Apple iOS or Android device's touchscreen to navigate your smartphone's menu and control audio/video playback. You will need to purchase additional cables for connection based on your type of smartphone device (see below).

    • Apple iOS Connectivity: If you have an Apple iPhone 4/4S or iPod touch (4th gen) with a 30-pin Dock connector, you will need Soundstream's 30-pin to HDMI/USB cable (530HDMI4, sold separately). If you have an Apple iPhone 5/5C/5S or iPod touch (5th gen) with the Lightning connector, you will need Apple's Lightning Digital AV adapter, Lightning-to-USB cable, and a mobile-grade HDMI cable (sold separately).
    • Android Connectivity: Most MHL-enabled Android devices, will require Soundstream's microUSB 5-pin to HDMI/USB cable (530HDMA2, sold separately). If you have a Samsung Galaxy S3/S4 or Note II/III, you will need Soundstream's microUSB 11-pin to HDMI/USB cable (530HDMA3, sold separately).
Note: Parking brake does not have to be engaged for MobileLink input to function. Will not charge the Apple iPhone/iPad or Android smartphones with a amperage rating above 0.5A.

The VR-622HB allows you to answer a call from the head unit's touchscreen monitor. Incoming phone call information will be displayed on the unit's LCD monitor. You can make a call from the VR-622HB using the unit's on-screen keypad (0-9) or a call history data log of dialed, received, and missed calls. Your car audio speakers will mute automatically during a call. During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.
    • Audio Streaming: The Soundstream VR-622HB also allows you to play back stored music and streamed music from your Bluetooth enabled phone, PDA, or personal music player using a Bluetooth connection. Front-Panel AV Input: The unit features a front-panel 3.5mm audio/video input for connecting a temporary external A/V source, such as a MP3 player or game console.

Dual Video Outputs: The multimedia head unit features two rear-panel composite video outputs for integration of a ceiling-mounted or headrest entertainment system in your vehicle.

Rear-View Camera Input: The Camera Input consists of a Composite video RCA jack for connecting an optional rear-view back-up camera (sold separately). The pigtails on the back of the unit are the same length as other aftermarket stereos I have seen, about 6 inches. The adapter that Crutchfield sends with the unit is usually soldered to the pigtails, and that adds another 6 inches. If you need more wire length, just solder in your own wire. Hope this helps. [ Stephen  Aug 22, 2014 ]
they do not according to who installed the unit you have to supply the cable. which I had he wrong ones and I have to redue it when I get the right cables. [ James  Aug 20, 2014 ]

If the unit shuts off when the lights are turned on, perhaps the dim wire is tied to the switched 12v supply or wired to it incorrectly. Could be a low voltage issue. Mine did this when the battery was low from sitting with the doors open. I had to reset the head unit. .there's a small hole on the face for it. [ Taylor  Aug 01, 2014 ]
I'm returning this unit I had multiple problems and I am fed up with it [ Bailey  Jul 31, 2014 ]

No to screens aver all though you can turn screen off got mine set to go off in a minute. As to date n time you have to touch screen in upper right corner and time and date will be displayed [ ROBERT  Jul 26, 2014 ]
The date and time are in the top right corner just touch it and the time will show up [ KELLY  Jul 25, 2014 ]
Honestly, I couldn't get that piece of junk out of my dash fast enough, didn't keep it long enough to check into screen savers. Sorry... [ Michael  Jul 25, 2014 ]
    I'm not sure [ Raymond  Jul 25, 2014 ]
I'm sorry i don't have a answer since I haven't tried changing screen savers unless there is some kinda internal software update to upgrade these settings, my answer will be no. You can change time & date under the settings. [ ramon warn  Jul 25, 2014 ]
I think there is no way only the time and date [ ROLANDO  Jul 25, 2014 ]
As much as I hate to bash a product, I spent two weeks trying to just get this thing to work right. It never did and I couldn't return it fast enough! The hard wired connection will cost you at least $80, to include the Apple adapter, HDMI cable and lighting to usb cable. Even then, it only connects occasionally and the screen just flickers on and off. The bluetooth won't stay connected and I had to reset the unit every time I got back into my truck. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. I learned my lesson... Crutchfiled was great though, no issues with them at all.... [ Michael  Jun 16, 2014 ]
It's works pretty well with pandora I haven't tested mobile link yet for you tube videos, but I have played DVD movies without an issue [ ramon warn  Jun 16, 2014 ]
when I bought this thing in was pretty upset,, there is a front usb but it didn't read ipods an the eq on this thing sucks all u get is treble an bass to eq bleh I would not get it,, I even sold mine for a $100 only cuz if I sold it for any more I would feel like I was ripping someone off [ NOAH  Jun 15, 2014 ]
I just installed this a few weeks ago in my Acadia, I currently use a iphone 5 and it works flawlessly. You just need to buy the adapter for your iphone and esentially anything on the screen of your phone will show up on the screen of this unit. Very happy with the VR-622! [ DANIEL  Jun 15, 2014 ]
I don't use the phone options, but the picture is very clear. The main thing that I don't like w/this unit is every time I shut the car off the volume goes back to minimal instead of staying @ the volume I set it at.Also, the clock will not keep correct time. [ CHARLES M  Jun 15, 2014 ]
I had the same question. It's simple. Just touch the upper right side of the display. There is a area that allows you to turn on/off the time and date so it does not display during DVD playback. [ EARL  May 16, 2014 ]

The unit can play back MP3 music files and MP4/DivX video files recorded onto a compatible DVD-R/RW or CD-R/RW disc. On the front panel USB port it supports playback of MP3 music files, MP4/DivX video files, and JPEG photo files stored on a compatible USB MSC device (up to 32GB). [ Jeff  May 01, 2014 ]  Staff
