About the Soundstream VR-930B

Dave Delamere

Maximum display, minimum chassis

Soundstream's SmartSense™ touchscreen delivers better clarity and less glare, so you can quickly see all your info. Its icon-based menu system lets you quickly access content from USB drives and SD cards, AM/FM radio, Bluetooth® wireless audio, CDs, and DVDs.

Installation Note: Soundstream's VR-930B requires adequate clearance for its oversized display when mounted in your vehicle's dashboard. Please call us at 1-888-955-6000 if you require assistance in determining if it will work in your vehicle.

Maximum display, minimum chassis

Soundstream's VR-930B DVD receiver isn't like most big touchscreen display multimedia units. Most are built to be installed in a double-DIN (4" tall) dash opening, so the screen size is by necessity limited to about 7" max. Soundstream took a different direction by putting a detachable 9.3" screen on a single-DIN (2" tall) chassis. This receiver isn't for every car, or every installation, but if you've got some imagination it could be a real show-stopper in your dash, or a cool addition to an RV.

Your media at your fingertips

Soundstream's SmartSense™ touchscreen delivers better clarity and less glare, so you can quickly see all your info. Its icon-based menu system lets you quickly access content from USB drives and SD cards, AM/FM radio, Bluetooth® wireless audio, CDs, and DVDs.

Bluetooth connectivity

Bluetooth allows you to take and make calls using your compatible phone through this receiver, all while keeping your hands on the wheel when talking. The sensitive microphone built into the front panel of the VR-930B lets your callers hear you clearly. Built-in A2DP technology allows you to stream music from your smartphone through this Soundstream without the hassle of plugging in.

The A/V nitty gritty

You can play your MP3 music using the front USB input, DVD/CD player, and SD card slot. Once you've picked your music, you can tweak it with the five EQ presets. You'll dig the five preamp outputs if you're adding amps and subs to your system, and you can use the touchscreen to control the amount of bass coming from your subwoofer.

Use the VR-930B's front audio/video input to hook up your favorite portable audio player, game console, or another video source. This receiver boasts a video output to send movies to young film critics in the backseat. Got a big vehicle? Then you'll appreciate the input for a rear-view camera, so you can safely maneuver into tight parking spots.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

SmartSense touchscreen technology offers more precise control, greater clarity, and less glare. This unit's touchscreen controls with interactive video graphics make menu navigation easy. The monitor electronically slides out for loading or ejecting a disc, and allows you to adjust the viewing angle (1-4) of the screen.

Note: The motorized LCD monitor measures 9.125" (w) x 5.5625" (h). It extends 3.5" below the bottom of the head unit's chassis and does not retract inside of the unit. This type of design may interfere with your vehicle's instrument panel. As always, please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car and talk to one of our Sales Advisors to verify fit with your vehicle.

Detachable LCD Monitor: The unit's LCD touchscreen monitor is detachable to deter theft, and comes with a padded carrying case for added protection.

Hard-Key Controls: There are also push-button controls along the top-panel of the detachable touchscreen monitor. The controls included Power/Mute, Menu, Setup/EQ, and Eject.

Backlight Brightness: You can adjust the unit's LCD monitor brightness in 3 steps; including Low, Mid, and High.

Parking Brake Detection: For safety reasons, you cannot view a video source on the built-in monitor as long as the vehicle is in motion. In order to display video, the pink wire of the included harness must be hardwired into the vehicle's parking brake light circuit, and the vehicle's parking brake must be engaged. Video on the LCD monitor can only be displayed when this unit's Parking Brake wire (pink) senses that the parking brake has been engaged in the vehicle.

IR Remote: The Soundstream VR-930B includes an IR remote control for wireless operation of the multimedia unit.

    Multimedia Playback

Disc Compatibility: The touchscreen monitor electronically slides down for loading and ejecting discs. The unit supports playback of MP3 music files, MP4/AVI video files, and JPEG photo files stored on a compatible SD/SDHC memory card.

USB 2.0 Port: The Soundstream VR-930B is fitted with a USB (type-A) 2.0 port located on the side-panel of the detachable touchscreen monitor for connection of a USB mass storage class device; such as your Android smartphone (Froyo/Gingerbread OS only), digital audio player, or thumbdrive. The unit supports playback of MP3 music files, MP4/AVI video files, and JPEG photo files stored on a compatible USB MSC device (up to 32GB).

Note: This unit's USB port is not compatible with Apple iPod/iPhone/iPad.

Bluetooth Technology: The Soundstream VR-930B features built-in Bluetooth (Ver 2.0) Technology. With built-in Bluetooth, you can wirelessly connect your Bluetooth capable mobile phone to listen to calls through your car's audio system. The VR-930B allows you to carry on a phone conversation from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone using the head unit's integrated front-panel microphone and your car audio speakers. The VR-930B allows you to answer the call manually from the head unit or automatically. Incoming phone call information will be displayed on the unit's LCD monitor. You can make a call from the VR-930B using the unit's on-screen keypad (0-9), your transferred Phone Book, or a call history data log of dialed and received calls. Your car audio speakers will mute automatically during a call. During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.
    • Audio Streaming: The Soundstream VR-930B also allows you to play back stored music and streamed music from your Bluetooth enabled phone, PDA, or personal music player using a Bluetooth connection. Note: Before using the unit's Bluetooth functions, you must pair your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone or audio device to the VR-930B.  Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some mobile devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the VR-930B.

Can you have any other screen beyond the blue screen that says AV-IN when hooked up through the av port? Also, is there anyway to randomize your songs when they are in different folders? (from usb port). Lastly, what media does the sd card slot play? (It does not play mp3)

Couple questions. Advertised as "Motorized" faceplate. How does it open up? Leads me to next question, do you have to remove faceplate every time you want to insert cd/dvd? I would be nice to see additional photos, instead of duplicates of the back of the faceplate. I would like to see the position that this "motorized" faceplate moves to and the front of the deck after the faceplate is removed.
