Our take on the Harman Kardon AVR 3650

by Marshall Chase
Harman Kardon

Receivers: Your ticket to sensational sound

Your receiver powers your speakers and lets you connect and select your entertainment sources. But a great receiver does a lot more — it ignites your emotions. From the passion of a favorite musical artist, to the crossfire of a super-charged movie soundtrack, to the intensity and immersion of a fast-paced video game, your receiver is the key to experiencing and enjoying it in full.

3D TV Learn more Harman Kardon's reputation is built on a sixty year legacy for solid construction and fine audio quality. The AVR-3650 home theater receiver is an outstanding way to discover why so many loyal Harman Kardon owners accept nothing less.

Lots of 3D-ready HDMI connectivity

The AVR 3650's HDMI inputs let you connect up to five high-definition sources for easy switching, like a gaming console, Blu-ray player, HD cable box and more. Blu-ray movies come through with amazing detail — thanks to the latest, master-quality audio formats built-in. Analog-to-HDMI video conversion lets you hook up your older A/V sources to your TV via a single HDMI connection, reducing cable clutter

Plug and play... and play, and play

The AVR-3650's Ethernet port makes it easy for you to enjoy music files from your home computer, or to access a virtually limitless variety of free music via Internet radio stations streaming from around the world. Plus this receiver's front USB port invites you to pop in a thumb drive loaded with hours of digital music favorites. You can also add a SIRIUS satellite tuner (requires SIRIUS subscription and optional home tuner kit).

High-current power supply

At the heart of the AVR 3650 is Harman Kardon's high current, ultra-wide bandwidth amplifier. With clean, consistent and accurate performance, this amp will drive your home speakers to new levels and your enjoyment to new heights.

HDMI audio/video switching

The AVR 3650's HDMI inputs let you connect up to five high-definition sources for convenient switching, like a gaming console, Blu-ray player, HD cable box and more. Blu-ray movies come through in all their glory thanks to this receiver's advanced audio decoding. Non-HD video sources will look great with using the built-in upconversion circuitry, and you'll only need to run a single HDMI cable to your television, reducing cable clutter.

Harman Kardan iPod dock

Your iPod® knows — there's no place like home

The iPod is a great way to take your favorite music and videos anywhere; but it can also be enjoyed on your best speakers. The AVR-3650 makes it easy when you add the optional Harman Kardon Bridge IIIP iPod dock. It connects with a single cable and lets you navigate your music and video libraries on-screen using the receiver's remote. Browse your iPod the way you usually do, whether by artist, album or genre. The dock keeps your iPod fully charged even when the receiver is powered off.

7.1ch AV Receiver The Harman/Kardon AVR 3650 employs a 7ch amplifier rated at 110 watts with 2 channels driven (8Ω, 20-20kHz, 0.09% THD) and features a mono subwoofer (LFE) output. The AVR 3650's high-current capability (HCC) and ultra-wide bandwidth amplifier design provides accurate, dynamic sound with emotional impact for your home theater system.

Amplifier Assignment: The AVR 3650 supports up to 7.1 channels (Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, Surround Back L/R, and SW) for surround sound playback. The seven amplifier channels built into the receiver are typically used for 7.1 channel surround in the main room, but there are various amplifier configurations to accommodate your home theater setup:

    • Surround Back: The AVR 3650 is designed to be used as a 7.1ch surround sound receiver with front left/right, center-channel, surround left/right, and surround back left/right channels along with a preamp subwoofer output.
    • Front Height: To enjoy Dolby Pro Logic IIz you can reassign the power amp from the two surround back channels to the two front height channels for better front height effects.
    • Zone2: The surround back channel amplifier can also be assigned to power stereo speakers in Zone2. Receiver will be limited to 5.1ch surround.

Surround Modes: The Harman/Kardon AVR 3650  offers a variety of surround modes to accommodate playback of various audio formats.

    Stereo
2ch Stereo Stereo sound is output by the front left and right speakers and subwoofer.
5ch Stereo Stereo sound is output by 5 speakers (front left/right, center, surround left/right) and subwoofer.
7ch Stereo Stereo sound is output by all 7 speakers (front left/right, center, surround left/right, surround-back left/right) and subwoofer.
    Dolby Pro Logic
Dolby Pro Logic II Dolby Pro Logic II transforms high-quality stereo sound into 5.1-channel surround sound. Thanks to its full-range performance, you will hear all the detail and subtleties of a compelling five-channel Dolby surround sound mix from a stereo signal. You can choose between three DPL II modes - Movie, Music, or Game.
Dolby Pro Logic IIx Dolby Pro Logic IIx transforms high-quality stereo and 5.1ch sound into 6.1- or 7.1-cchannel surround sound. With Dolby Pro Logic IIx you experience engaging, natural surround sound. Special effects are more realistic than you ever thought possible. Your movies and television programming sound richer, with more depth. You can choose between three DPL IIx modes - Movie, Music, or Game.
Dolby Pro Logic IIz Providing a dramatic listening alternative for 7.1 systems, Dolby Pro Logic IIz brings the added dimension of height to create an immersive 7.1-channel surround sound experience from any stereo, 5.1, 6.1, or 7.1 movie, music, TV, or game audio source. Dolby Pro Logic IIz identifies and processes ambient sound energy and directs this information to front height speakers in a 7.1-channel environment.
    Harman/Kardon Surround
Logic 7 Harman/Kardon Logic 7 processing  transforms conventional stereo sources into 5.1-channel surround sound using proprietary algorithms. The result is optimal audio quality with a 360° soundscape. Whether you're listening to digital or analog sources, Logic 7 technology allows you to experience the surrounding ambient sounds that are already in the stereo mixes by converting, or upmixing, two-channel stereo signals into five- or seven-channel signals. This ensures you'll get a superior entertainment experience.
    Harman Virtual Speaker

When only two main speakers are present in the system, you can use Harman Virtual Surround to create an virtual surround sound effect.

Harman Headphone Virtual surround processing which simulates a 5.1-channel speaker system using standard headphones.
    Dolby Digital
Dolby Digital Dolby Digital has been selected as the default format for DVD video, standard 2 channel audio playback and HDTV Digital broadcasting. Dolby Digital features two independent surround channels giving same full range as the three front channels. Plus it adds a Low Frequency Effect channel LFE. Dolby Digital accomplishes this by using a technique called compression.
Dolby Digital EX Dolby Digital EX takes the Dolby Digital 5.1-channel setup one step further with an additional center surround channel (reproduced through one or two speakers) for extra dimensional detail and an enveloping surround sound effect.
Dolby Digital Plus Dolby Digital Plus is based on core Dolby Digital technologies. Dolby Digital Plus is an advanced surround sound audio codec designed specifically for evolving media. Dolby Digital Plus brings cinematic sound to Blu-ray, broadcast, online, game, and mobile phone entertainment (up to 7.1ch)
Dolby Digital TrueHD Dolby TrueHD produces audio that is identical to and every bit as spectacular as the master recording. It lets you experience the full potential of Blu-ray Disc (up to 7.1ch), and is even ready for future HD delivery formats.
    DTS
DTS DTS (Digital Theater Systems) uses the same concept as Dolby Digital, but implements a lower compression rate. This leads to more dynamic range, improved channel separation, and more subtle nuances.
DTS-HD High Resolution Audio DTS-HD High Resolution Audio is an improved version of the conventional DTS, DTS-ES and DTS 96/24 signals formats, compatible with sampling frequencies of 96 or 48 kHz and up to 7.1 channels of discrete digital sound. High data bit rate performance provides high quality sound. This format is fully compatible with conventional products, including conventional DTS digital surround 5.1-channel data.
Master Audio DTS-HD Master Audio is a lossless audio format created by Digital Theater System (DTS). This format provides the facility to support up to 8 audio channels with a sampling frequency of 96kHz/24bit resolution and up to 6 audio channels with a sampling frequency of 192kHz/24bit resolution. It is fully compatible with conventional products, including conventional DTS digital surround 5.1-channel data.
DTS-ES DTS-ES delivers 6.1 channels of discrete or matrixed audio. Movies encoded in DTS-ES will dramatically intensify the DTS surround effect with the addition of a surround center-channel speaker.
DTS 96/24 DTS 96/24 offers a higher quality level of multi-channel audio (up to 5.1 channels) for standard DVDs. The "96" refers to a 96kHz sampling rate (compared to the typical 48kHz sampling rate.) The "24" refers to 24-bit depth, compared to 16-bit depth used for CD sound, which means there is more audio information present.
DTS Neo:6 DTS Neo:6 takes 2-channel (stereo) audio and completely transforms it into up to six full-bandwidth matrix channels of surround sound. Your home theater system will produce six and five separate channels, respectively, to match your speaker layout. DTS Neo:6 can also generate a center surround channel from 5.1 material. You can choose between two DTS NEO: 6 modes - Cinema or Music.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the AV receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical or coaxial).

Dolby Pro Logic II Music Settings: While listening in the Dolby Pro Logic II Music format, there are three further enhancements you can adjust:

    • Panorama: Broadens the front stereo image to the surround speakers to provide a wraparound effect, especially effective when there is limited output from the surround channels, panorama can be turned on/off in the menu.
    • Dimension: Allows you to move the sound field forward or backward.
    • Center Width: Allows you to adjust the width of the center channel.

PLIIz Height Gain: The PLIIz Height Gain control gives you the ability to change the volume of the front height channels to suit different programs. The control has three settings: Low (normal volume), Mid (moderate volume increase), and High (maximum volume increase). You can also fine-tune the front height channel volume levels.

EzSet/EQ: Harman/Kardon's exclusive EzSet/EQ feature makes it possible to automatically set the AVR 3650's output levels, crossover points, and delay times for each of the 7.1 channels. EzSet/EQ will play test sweeps through the speakers, and using the included microphone make all necessary adjustments. The microphone plugs into the receiver's front-panel headphone jack.

Note: If there are fewer than 5 speakers in your system, do not use the EzSet/EQ process. Instead, use the Manual Speaker Setup.

Manual Speaker Setup: The Speaker Setup menu allows you to manually configure your speaker system. You can set the number speakers (up to 7.1ch), distance of each speaker to your main listening position (up to 30'), crossover frequency (Large/40/60/80/100/120/150/200Hz), subwoofer size (8/10/12/15")and level of each speaker (+/-10 dB).

Dolby Volume: Dolby Volume technology maintains the same volume level no matter what entertainment you might be taking in. Whether you're playing a Blu-ray Disc recording or a music file streaming from the Internet, you only need to set the AVR 3650's volume once to eliminate unpredictable volume differences among shows, commercials, and movies you may be flipping between. No more being jolted out of your seat by a loud commercial, or having to adjust the volume every time you change channels. Dolby Volume offers you an ideal listening environment, maintaining the sound's original balance at all volumes.

Tone Controls: The receiver' provides independent Bass & Treble control (+/-10 dB).

Night Mode: Night mode compresses the audio so that louder passages are reduced in volume to avoid disturbing others, while dialogue remains intelligible. Night Mode can be set to Max, Mid, or Off.

Audio Poll: The Auto Poll feature is used when both an analog audio and a digital audio connection have been made for one source device. If no digital signal is available, the AVR 3650 will automatically switch to the analog input for the source. This situation can occur with some cable or satellite television broadcasts, where some channels are broadcast with digital audio and others with analog audio, or when a DVD player is paused or stopped.

Color-coded Binding Posts: All of the receiver's speaker terminals are color-coded binding posts. They are not 5-way binding posts because a plastic collar prevents their use with spade lugs and they are positioned too far apart to be used with dual banana plugs.

Assignable Digital Inputs: The AVR 3650 features two optical digital (Toslink) inputs and two coaxial digital inputs. Each can be assigned to any of the inputs (except Aux). There is also an optical digital output to transfer a digital audio recording to a connected CD-burner.

Headphone Jack: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, all the speakers are automatically muted.

    Video Section

8 HD Inputs/1 HD Output: The Harman/Kardon AVR 3650 is equipped with eight HD video inputs (7 rear/1 front) & one HD video output. Six HDMI 1.4a inputs (up to 1080p/24Hz capable) let you connect a high-definition satellite receiver, Blu-ray Disc player, and game system for high definition video and audio. Two component inputs (1080i/60Hz capable) provide added HD-capable connectivity and versatility. There is also a single HDMI 1.4a output.

    • HDMI Inputs/Output: The receiver is equipped with six HDMI (v.1.4a) inputs (7 rear/1 front) for connecting HDMI-equipped audio/video components. All six HDMI inputs are capable of carrying uncompressed digital audio and 3D 1080p video. There is also an HDMI (v.1.4a) output which supports the ARC function that feeds audio/video signals to your TV.
    • Component Video Inputs: This unit features two component video inputs capable of supporting high-definition video signals (up to 1080i).

3D-Ready: The Harman/Kardon AVR 3650 is compatible with 3D-ready Blu-ray disc movies, video games, and other 3D content through its HDMI (v.1.4a) connections.

Note: 3D viewing requires 3D-ready source with 3D content, 3D-ready HDTV, 3D glasses, and high-speed HDMI cable. Other 3D accessories may also be needed.

Deep Color: The AVR 3650 also supports Deep Color, which can display a larger color range than standard-definition schemes. The result is a more lifelike, vibrant picture.

Faroudja DCDi Cinema Video Processing: The AVR 3650's Faroudja DCDi Cinema video processor automatically provides the best picture based on the capabilities of your televisions and the incoming source video. Using built-in Faroudja DCDi Cinema video processing, all incoming video can be scaled up to 1080p and sent through the AV receiver's HDMI monitor output to your television. The Faroudja DCDi Cinema Dual 3D comb filters and 10-bit video processing eliminate the jagged edges and moire patterns seen with less advanced processing.

Video Modes: You may experiment with the receiver's Video Modes to further enhance the picture.

    • Sports: Sporting events with lots of motion.
    • Nature: Programs filmed outdoors.
    • Movie: Typical movies and TV broadcasts.
    • Custom: Manually adjust brightness, contrast, color, and sharpness.

Advanced Video Modes: The Advanced Video Modes menu allows you to further enhance the receiver's video output.

    • MPEG Noise Reduction: This setting is designed to address two specific types of video distortion: mosquito noise and blocking artifacts
    • Cross Color Suppressor: Turn this setting on to remove cross color artifacts, which can occur when high-frequency luminance (brightness) signals are misinterpreted as chrominance (color) signals, causing unwanted flickering, flashing colors or rainbow patterns.
    • Flesh Tone Enhancement: Turn this setting on to enhance the flesh tone of peoples' skin.
    • Black Level: This setting is effective only when the receiver's Composite Video Monitor Out connection is being used. Set the Black Level to On for a full black-level setting that provides the full dynamic range of black as presented on most DVDs.
    • Deinterlacing:  Analog video in the NTSC format is interlaced. That is, each refresh of the television screen displays only half the pixels in a frame, alternating between all of the even rows of pixels and all of the odd rows. Modern video displays are capable of displaying the complete frame all at once by progressively scanning all of the rows of pixels from top to bottom. For optimal viewing on a progressive-scan display, the video images must be deinterlaced.
    • Film Mode: This setting is accessible only when the Deinterlacing setting is turned on. It compensates for the different frame rates in which film and video are shot. Film is shot at a rate of 24 frames per second (progressive scan), while video is shot at slightly less than 60 frames per second (interlaced). The receiver is able to detect whether the program was originally shot on film and transferred to video, and will compensate appropriately for any authoring errors in the conversion.

HDMI Bypass: This setting allows you to bypass the AV receiver's internal video processing for proper display of 3-D video content and of source devices (such as some game consoles) where the unit's video processing can create delays that can cause synchronization errors between the sound and picture.

ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to your receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.

AV Sync Delay: This feature allows you to correct a synchronization problem in which a source device or the video display introduces a significant amount of video processing that causes the audio and video parts of the signal to be out of sync. The audio for all channels can be delayed up to 180 milliseconds.

    USB/iPod/Network Functions

USB Port: The AVR 3650 can play MP3 (8-320kbps)/WMA (5-192kbps) audio files from a USB (MSC) device inserted into the receiver's front-panel USB (type-A) port. You can browse folders & tracks, as well as control basic playback functions - such as Play/Pause, Fast Forward/Reverse, or Previous/Next.

Network Connection: The Harman/Kardon's AVR 3650's Ethernet port (RJ-45) allows you to connect the AV receiver to your home network and enjoy Internet radio from your broadband internet connection, or music content from DLNA-compatible devices that are connected to the same network.

Note: Use a Cat. 5/Cat. 5E cable to connect the AV receiver's Ethernet port (RJ-45) to your home network.

DLNA Certified: The AVR 3650 can play MP3 (8-320kbps)/WMA (5-192kbps) music files that are stored on your computer, when both the computer and the AVR 3650 is connected to your home network.

Note: A PC must be running Windows Media Player version 11 or higher, Windows Media Center version 2.0/3.0, or Intel Media Server. An Apple Macintosh computer must be running DLNA-compliant software.

Internet Radio: The AVR 3650 lets you stream MP3/WMA music files via the Internet from the www.radioharmankardon.com portal. You can browse Internet Radio stations by genre, location, popularity, and new stations. You can also save your Favorite Stations and program up to 30 Internet Radio stations as presets.

Optional iPod Dock: When the Harman/Kardon Bridge IIIP (532BRIDG3P, sold separately) is connected to its proprietary input on the AVR 3650 and an iPod/iPhone is docked, you may play audio/video content from your iPod/iPhone through your home entertainment system. You can operate your iPod/iPhone using the supplied IR remote, or the receiver's front-panel controls. You can also view metadata on the unit's front-panel or your connected television. The Bridge IIIP will also charge your docked iPod/iPhone. The Bridge IIIP dock supports the following iPod/iPhones - iPod classic (80/120/160GB), iPod nano (3rd/4th/5th/6th gen), iPod touch (1st/2nd/3rd/4th gen) and iPhone (2G/3G/3GS/4).

Note: The AVR 3650 does not support the previous Harman/Kardon Bridge II or III iPod docks.

    Multi-Zone Capability

Zone 2: Two different sources can be played in two locations using the Zone 2 outputs. The receiver has a pair of stereo preamp outputs for Zone 2. Only  audio sources can be output to Zone 2 (not video). You can control the receiver from the second zone using the supplied remote control when an external infrared sensor is used. The AVR 3650's surround back speaker outputs can also be re-assigned to Zone 2, so the receiver can power a 5.1-channel system in the main room and a pair of speakers in Zone 2. A Zone 2 IR remote control and a Zone 2 IR input allow you to control the receiver's Zone 2 volume in the other room, using an optional IR multizone system (sold separately).

Compatible Zone Sources: Only Tuner, Satellite Radio (optional), analog, USB, and iPod/iPhone (optional) audio sources can be sent to Zone 2.

Note: You cannot select different AM/FM radio stations in separate Zones at the same time.

Incompatible Zone Sources: Optical/coaxial digital, HDMI, and Network audio sources are not output to Zone 2. You cannot output any video signal to Zone 2.

    Tuner Section

AM/FM Tuner: The Harman/Kardon AVR 3650 is equipped with a built-in AM/FM tuner. The built-in AM/FM tuner provides manual, seek, and preset tuning. You can store up to 30 AM/FM presets.

Sirius Satellite Radio Ready: An optional SiriusConnect home tuner (607SCH1/220SCH2P, sold separately) can be added to the AVR 3650, allowing you to enjoy the variety and sound quality of satellite radio. The channel number and preset number are listed on the AVR 3650's display; the song title, artist, channel name, and channel category are also displayed on the connected video monitor. There are 40 discrete satellite station presets (separate from the AM and FM presets), recalled using the numeric keys on the remote.

Note: Sirius Satellite Radio delivers a variety of commercial-free music from categories including pop, rock, country, R&B, dance, jazz, classical and many more, plus coverage of all the top professional and college sports, including play-by-play games from select leagues and teams. Additional programming includes expert sports talk, uncensored entertainment, comedy, family programming, local traffic and weather, and news from your most trusted sources. Sirius Satellite Radio is available to residents of the U.S. (except Alaska and Hawaii) and Canada.

    Convenience Features

Graphical User Interface (GUI): The AVR 3650 has a highly intuitive graphical user interface (GUI), making system setup and receiver operation easy. The AVR's "Torino" video-processing circuitry generates on-screen graphics in high definition and blends them with the incoming video so that you can continue to watch a program while using the receiver's system menus

Note: To view the GUI, you must connect the HDMI monitor output of the receiver to your television.

Input Name: You can program the source name for any of the inputs, up to 10 characters.

Sleep Timer: This function allows you to automatically set the power to standby after a predetermined time; from 10 to 90 minutes in 10 minute increments.

Back-Up Memory: The unit is equipped with a back-up memory that provides approximately four weeks of memory storage when power is disconnected.

Firmware Update: The front-panel USB (type) port can be used in the event Harman/Kardon offers a firmware update for the receiver in the future. The tested Harman/Kardon AVR 3650 contained firmware version 1.0 (as of August 2011). Visit the Harmon/Kardon Support Site for the latest firmware update information.

    Remote Control

Learning Remote: In addition to controlling the AVR 3650, the included IR remote is capable of controlling eight other devices, including an iPod/iPhone device docked in a the Bridge IIIP docking station connected to the AV receiver. You can program the codes for each of your source components into the remote. The AVR 3650's remote is also capable of  "Learning" individual IR codes from the original remote that came with a source device. Once the remote is programmed or has "Learned", you can switch the remote's control mode to access the functions for a particular source device by pressing the remote's Source Selector button for that device. You can also create up to 11 Macros with up to 19 commands each. The remote's buttons are backlit and will light up with a press of a button.

Zone 2 Remote Control: The AVR 3650 also includes a dedicated Zone 2 infrared (IR) remote control and features a Zone 2 IR input, so you can conveniently control a second source in an additional room. Simply connect a remote IR receiver of your multizone system (located in Zone 2) to the receiver's Zone 2 IR Input to control the AVR 3650's Zone 2 volume from another room using the supplied Zone 2 IR remote control.

HDMI Control: HDMI Control allows the communication of control information among connected HDMI components in your system.

Trigger Output: The AVR 3650 has a 3.5mm minijack output to send a 12-Volt DC turn-on signal to another component that accepts a 12V trigger.

Remote In/Out: The receiver has a 3.5mm minijack input & output for use with an external IR receiver (input) and other compatible components (output).

RS-232 Port: The AVR 3650's RS-232 serial port may be connected to an external control system to allow it to transmit control commands to the receiver. The port is bidirectional so that the AV receiver can transmit status updates to the control device. Control4 certified technology allows the receiver to be used with a centralized home integration and control system.

AVR 3650 a winner where it counts most

Written By Joe-teK, Missouri on Sunday, January 01, 2012

Absolutely amazing sound quality. Open, airy, warm and refined. I compared this to two Onkyo NR series receivers and a new Aventage receiver and from a sonic perspective the HK 3650 dominated both of them by a wide margin with the Onkyos coming in last place.

In fact, compared to the three onkyos I tested, the AVR 3650 sounds leagues better. I am a little OCD when it comes to AV equipment and doing side by side sound comparisons it is overly obvious which sounds better.

I purchased this to replace an Onkyo TX-SR706

No discernible distortion at high volume Very clean modern HK look.

While all of the other receivers I tested have many more features, they lack in the sonic quality department when compared to the HK. I was almost shocked at how much better the HK sounds than the other models I tested.

If you are picking up a new system with sound quality being of paramount importance then you can't go wrong with this unit. If you are upgrading to have all the internet features and bells and whistles then look elsewhere.

    Pros:
The sonic warmth and smoothness is amazing. Plenty of power to drive full 7.1 surround. Compared this to several current Onkyo and Yamaha models and this one just sounds much better and handles video up-conversion much better
    Cons:
Lacking features I would expect in this day and age. No streaming from Smart phone, No real internet features or services supported such as Pandora......
