Overview

Our take on the Harman Kardon HK 3390

Budget conscious music lovers rejoice

You can count on the audio experts at Harman Kardon for high-end stereo sound that doesn't cost a fortune. Their HK 3390 delivers 80 watts per channel of high-current, ultrawide-bandwidth amplification — a signature Harman Kardon technology that recreates all the dynamics and subtle details of the original musical performance. You'll experience rich, room-filling sound with every recording you own.

Flexible connections for your a/v components

The receiver's audio and video connections offer system flexibility.

The '3390 offers plenty of connections for your music sources. You get three sets of inputs for audio components, including one for a turntable so you can enjoy your treasured vinyl collection. It even includes convenient switching for video components — an unusual but useful feature for stereo receivers. Four A/V inputs, including one on the front panel, let you connect a game console plus other video sources and use this receiver as the centerpiece of a two-channel home theater system. Two separate subwoofer outputs make it easy to add a powered sub (or even two) for extra bass impact. And a set of pre-amp out/main-amp input jacks let you connect an external power amp for future system expansion.

High-current power supply

Superior power capability

At the heart of the '3390 is Harman Kardon's high current, ultra-wide bandwidth amplifier. With clean, consistent and accurate performance, this amp will drive your home speakers to new levels and your enjoyment to new heights.

Bought my last Harmon Kardon receiver in 1975. Hope this one lasts longer than the warranty.

Cons: Dials are too small and way too dim. Gonna have to label some stick ons just to see what button to push.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Absolutely delighted with my recent purchase of HK 3390. Running to a pair of Polk RTiA3's speakers and hooked up to a Yamaha C600 CD changer. Total install time from opening the boxes to set up less than 30 minutes. The sound is just incredible. Can plug my ipod directly into the C600. Easy! I now have complete access to all my music in one great location.. Great support and help from Crutchfiels with advice. Many thanks

Generally a great unit. Good value. Easy to use controls and remote. A few minor issues which include 1) no loudness tone control, and 2) the feet are flimsy, one broke off when siliding the unit to plug in the cables.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Not being much of a Movie watcher, as in almost never...I replaced a Sony Super Complicated Home Theater Set-up with this Receiver...No more Flashing menus...Surround Garbage....user manual an inch thick...just Excellent 2-channel Stereo Sound...plus with the Phono input, I can listen to some of my Old Vinyl again. Very pleased with the Quality and Price plus the features of this unit....If you just require Excellent 2 channel Audio w/o all the Bells & whistles, this would be a Great choice IMO....and you know about Crutchfield's reputation, it's just the very Best.

Features

High-Current (+/- 42 amps) Stereo Amplifier: The built-in amplifier has high-current capability to handle demanding loads. Although the receiver is made to be used with 8 ohm speakers, the amplifier sees a 4 ohm load when two sets of 8 ohm speakers are connected and both speaker outputs are on. The high-current capabilities of the amplifier allow it to simultaneously drive two sets of 8 ohm speakers without difficulty.

iPod: The included A/V adapter cable (3.5mm mini-jack to RCA) can be used to connect the audio and video output of many iPod models the the HK3490; the iPod classic, touch, and iPhone are not compatible with the included cable for video or photo output (audio only).

Remote In/Out Jacks: There is one 3.5mm mini-jack remote input and one 3.5mm mini-jack remote output on the rear panel of this unit. If the receiver is placed behind a solid or smoked glass door, the obstruction may prevent the front panel IR sensor from receiving commands from the remote. If the unit is positioned so the front panel IR sensor cannot receive commands from the remote, an optional IR repeater system may be connected to the Remote IR In jack and positioned to accept commands from the remote. The Remote IR Out jack can be connected to the remote input jack of compatible equipment to relay commands to that equipment.

Sleep Timer: You can program the receiver's sleep timer to turn it the unit off after a preset amount of time; choose from 90, 80, 70, 60, 50, 40, 30, 20, or 10 minutes. Once the sleep timer has been engaged, the display will dim to half-intensity and the amount of time remaining will count down.

Remote: The included remote (HK 3390) is preprogrammed to control harman/kardon DVD players, CD players, CD recorders, and the DMC 1000 digital media server.

Display Dimmer: The display brightness can be set to full intensity, half intensity, or off. This feature is activated from the remote only. When the display is dimmed or turned off, the light around the volume knob also turns off.

Input and Output Notes

Speaker Terminals: There are binding post outputs for 2 pair of speakers, labeled Speaker 1 and Speaker 2. The terminals are not 5-way binding posts because each post has a plastic collar that prevents use with spade lugs.

Pre-out/Main-in Loop: Factory jumpers connect the main amplifier input to the full range preamp outputs. This offers the flexibility of inserting an equalizer, surround processor (when using multiple amps), or another type of processor between the two stages.

Subwoofer Preamp Output Jacks: There are two subwoofer preamp output jacks on the rear panel of the receiver. These jacks are provided for connection to powered subwoofers with line-level inputs. Each sub output has a corresponding trigger output and link switch, allowing you to automatically turn a compatible powered subwoofer on/off along with the HK 3390's speaker outputs.

Headphone Jack: There is a full-size (1/4") headphone jack on the front panel. When headphones are plugged in the speaker outputs are automatically muted.

Switched AC Outlets: There are two switched AC outlets on the rear panel; the maximum output is 100 watts each.
