Our take on the Harman Kardon HK 3770

by David Brown
Harman Kardon

The sound solution for the less-is-more movement

On one hand, you want something that sounds much better than an iPod® or Bluetooth® speaker. On the other hand, you want something less complex than a surround sound system. You'll find your sweet spot in a stereo receiver. In addition to being easy to set up and use, many now offer Internet radio and other network music options. Add your music source and two speakers, and you're ready to relax and enjoy your tunes. You might even connect your TV for improved sound with movies and shows.

Modern connectivity, backed by classic sound

When you want your music to sound its best, you just can't beat a good two-channel stereo. Connect your speakers to the Harman Kardon HK 3770 and this powerful receiver will bring those tunes to life the way they were meant to be heard. Whether you're listening to songs from a CD, turntable, networked computer, or a smartphone, this receiver has the connectivity to play them and the brawn to bring out their dynamics and detail. Digital inputs even allow it to improve the sound of TVs and streaming media players like Apple TV®, too. With so much versatility, this receiver goes above and beyond old-school models, while retaining classic Harman Kardon sound.

Clean sound from a new "green" technology

Harman Kardon has been working to make their receivers more energy efficient without compromising sound quality. The HK 3770 represents the fruits of their labor. It utilizes Harman Kardon's GreenEdge™ technology. Rather than redesigning the high-current Class AB amplification stage, this receiver features a new digital power supply. Unlike conventional analog power supplies, this new digital design uses less energy, fewer raw materials, and produces less heat. The result is a lightweight, efficient, eco-friendly receiver that delivers the same sonic benefits we've come to expect from this audio innovator.

Enjoy wireless music from smartphones, tablets, and computers

The HK 3770 offers two ways to stream music wirelessly. Built-in Bluetooth lets you stream tunes from a smartphone, tablet, and even some computers without a home network. It's the easiest way to enjoy your digital music collection with room-filling sound. If you have a large digital collection stored on a networked computer or NAS, the HK 3770 is Internet-ready. Connect it to your network router and stream music from your computer over your wireless home network. You can also listen to thousands of free Internet radio streams from stations around the world, going far beyond the reach of the built-in AM/FM tuner. Download the free Harman Kardon remote app to your iOS® or Android™ device and use it to control the receiver. App control requires a wireless home network and a wired connection between your receiver and your network router.

Connect your iPhone or USB thumb drive

The USB port on the HK 3770's front panel lets you plug in your iPhone®, iPod®, or iPad® to listen to music. This connection bypasses the device's digital-to-analog converters in favor of the receiver's high-performance DACs. That means you'll get smoother sound with more detail than your iPhone can deliver on its own. You can also use the receiver's remote to control playback with connected Apple® devices. The USB port is also great for playing digital music files on thumb drives by popping them into the USB port.

Audio Section

Output Power: The Harman/Kardon HK3770 stereo receiver features a 120 watt x 2-channel (8-ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, THD 0.07%) amplifier for great sound quality with little distortion even at high volumes.

High-Resolution 24-bit/192kHz DAC: This stereo receiver is equipped with a 24-bit/192-kHz DAC for excellent sound quality reproduction that is natural sounding.

Harman Volume: Harman volume is an advanced digital signal processing technology to control playback volume. It evens out the volume level on everything you watch, improving your listening experience. Once you choose the volume level, Harman Volume does the rest. It helps you avoid volume increases from commercials, volume differences when you change channels or switch sources, and brings out the dialog.

Analog Inputs/Output: The Harman/Kardon stereo receiver features five analog stereo RCA inputs to connect up to five audio components, and one stereo RCA record output to connect to a CD-recorder and other recording device. Included in the five analog inputs is a Phono input (MM) for vinyl playback.

Digital Inputs: The HK3770 receiver is equipped with two optical (toslink) digital inputs and one coaxial (RCA) digital input for connection of a TV or media streaming device.

Phono Input: In addition to the five analog inputs, the stereo receiver is fitted with a Phono input (MM) for vinyl playback.

A & B Speaker Terminals: This receiver features two sets of speaker outputs (A & B), each with binding-post terminals. You can independently turn on or off each pair of speakers, as well as play both pair of speakers. The speaker pairs are wired internally in parallel. These binding post terminals will accept bare wire (up to 10AWG), pin-connectors, and banana plugs (single or dual).

Subwoofer Output: The stereo receiver is equipped with a mono subwoofer output for connecting a powered subwoofer. The output is full-range, so you will need to connect a powered subwoofer with a built-in crossover.

Headphone Jack: There is a full-size (1/4") headphone jack on the front panel. When headphones are plugged in the speaker outputs are automatically muted.

Network & Tuner Functions

Ethernet LAN Port: The H/K stereo receiver is fitted with a RJ-45 Ethernet (LAN) port to connect the receiver to your home network to access your DLNA music server or Internet Radio.

Internet Radio (from vTuner): You can also listen to Internet radio stations using the vTuner Internet Radio Station database service particularly customized for this unit, providing a database of numerous radio stations around the world. You can search for Internet Radio stations by Location, Genre, New, Popular, or Podcast. You can store up to 30 of your favorite stations.

DLNA Certified: The HK3770 is DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) 1.5 and Windows 7/8 compliant for audio networking. This means it's easier for you to access and enjoy digital music stored on your PC. Compatible music files include MP3 (32-320kbps; 8-48kHz) and WMA (5-192kbps; 8-48kHz). You can use your PC to play music content through your audio system, or use the H/K receiver to browse and play music files on computer's hard drive. You can control playback of your streamed audio files from the network receiver's remote control. The receiver also supports ID3-Tag and META tag information so song title, artist name, and album name can be displayed from the unit's front-panel display.

AM/FM Tuner: The Harman/Kardon stereo receiver features a built-in AM/FM tuner with manual, seek, and preset tuning (auto/manual). You can store up to 30 AM/FM presets (in any combination). You're able to scan through these presets (5-seconds each) to help you search for your favorite music. You also can tune directly to a station using the numeric keypad on the included remote control.

USB/iPod Integration

Front-Panel USB Port: This stereo receiver is equipped with a front-panel USB (type-A) port that allows you to enjoy playback of MP3 (32-320kbps; 8-48kHz) and WMA (5-192kbps; 8-48kHz) music files from a USB mass storage class memory device; such as select Android smartphones (Froyo/Gingerbread OS only), portable MP3 players, or USB thumbdrives (not compatible with USB HDDs). The USB device must be formatted in FAT or FAT32. Using the unit's front-panel display and included remote control, you can browse your stored music files on your connected USB memory device. USB portable audio devices that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the network stereo receiver's USB port (5V/0.5A).

iPod/iPhone Direct: The USB (type-A) port on the front-panel provides convenient connection for your iPod/iPhone so you can listen to your stored music and music apps through the H/K stereo receiver. The iPod/iPhone USB digital connection means that the digital audio signal from your iPod/iPhone is transmitted directly to the system, minimizing noise interference and allowing use of the receiver's DAC, not the DAC in your iPod/iPhone. This results in more precise sound reproduction. You can choose to control your Apple device from its clickwheel/touchscreen or from the receiver.. Basic playback functions (such as Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track) can be controlled by the receiver's remote. Song/artist information on your iPod/iPhone will display on your connected the unit's front-panel display. Your iPod/iPhone's battery will be charged while connected to the receiver. Using the Lightning- or Dock-cable that came with your Apple device to connect directly to the H/K stereo receiver, iPod/iPhone compatibility is as follows (as of 9/25/2014):

Remote Control

Built-in Bluetooth: The Harman/Kardon receiver features built-in Bluetooth with support for profiles A2DP 1.2 and AVRCP 1.3. You'll be able to wirelessly stream stored music and music apps from your Bluetooth-enabled Apple device, Android smartphone/tablet, portable audio player, laptop, or PC to the H/K receiver. You will also be able to control basic playback functions (Play/Pause, Fast Forward/Rewind, Previous/Next Track) using the receiver's remote control. Advanced music operation will still need to be handled from your Bluetooth-enable device. There is no song/artist information display on the receiver's front-panel display. Continue to use your Bluetooth device's screen to view song/artist info.

Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the H/K receiver.

Remote Control: The HK3770 comes with an IR remote control for wireless operation of the receiver and your connected USB or iPod device.

H/K Remote App: Downloading the free Harman/Kardon Remote app from the iTunes App store onto your Apple iOS (5.0+) device or from the Google Play Store onto your Android (2.2+) device lets you control the HK3770 receiver from your smartphone or tablet device. You'll also be able to control your Apple iOS or Android device's stored music from the Harman/Kardon Remote app.

  • Source Selection: You'll be able to access and select all of the receiver source inputs (Analog 1-5 inputs, Phono input, Optical/Coaxial, DLNA, vTuner, Bluetooth, USB, or iPod) through your Apple iOS or Android device with the Harmon/Kardon Remote app installed.
  • Audio Settings: You have control of the receiver 's Volume and other audio adjustments through the Harman/Kardon Remote app and your Apple iOS/Android device.
  • Music Control: You can control all the music you have stored on your compatible Apple iOS/Android device through the Harman/Kardon Remote app. You'll be able to search your music by Song, Artist, Album, Playlist, and Genre. You also get basic playback functions such as Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track, Fast Forward/Rewind, and Repeat/Random. To access music apps, you'll need to exit the Harman/Kardon Remote app and select your desired music app on your iOS or Android device.

IR Input/Output: There is one minijack (3.5mm) remote input and one minijack (3.5mm) remote output on the rear panel of this unit. If the receiver is placed behind a solid or smoked glass door, the obstruction may prevent the front panel IR sensor from receiving commands from the remote. If the unit is positioned so the front panel IR sensor cannot receive commands from the remote, an optional IR repeater system (sold separately) may be connected to the Remote IR In jack and positioned to accept commands from the remote. The Remote IR Out jack can be connected to the remote input jack of compatible equipment to relay commands to that equipment.

Trigger Output: This minijack (3.5mm) output sends a 12-volt DC turn-on signal to another component that accepts a 12-volt trigger, such as a CD player or powered subwoofer.

Harman Kardon HK 3770 Review

Written By Chris O., Austin, TX on Wednesday, September 03, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great looking and sounding amplifier! Easy to set up and operation is simple and to the point. Though the unit weighed much less than I anticipated, the sound leaves nothing to desire. Paired this with two Polk RTi A7's and the highs and lows are extremely clear and the unit delivers plenty of punch.

Great Stereo Receiver

Written By Alex, Louisiana on Tuesday, September 02, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This amp sounds great and has plenty of power to push our old Cerwin Vega speakers with 15" woofer, 8" mid and 3 tweeters. It gets way too loud before any perceivable distortion. One small gripe is the lack of tweakability: not much in the way of customizing EQ. There also aren't any different modes, like for movie or music settings. But, so far we are loving the sound anyway.
Pros:
Great sound. Plenty of Power for large speakers. Looks good. Good price. All the inputs we needed. Bluetooth works great.
Cons:
Lack of EQ control. Lack of sound presets for different sources.

Needed a receiver to run 4 speakers and work with my IPOD. Does everything I expected it to do. Detects IPOD at twice the speed of the $1200.00 receiver it replaced. Love it.
Pros:
Simple config

Great so far

Written By Colin F, Edison, NJ on Sunday, May 11, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have this receiver paired with two infinity primus floor standing speakers and an infinity primus sub. I was primarily interested in a system for music so the 2.1 setup works for me. I am still amazed at the clarity and detail this amp reproduces even at high volumes. Plenty of options for inputs is nice, though I mostly use one Aux in from my computer. Bluetooth is a plus though and works very very easily. I mostly listen to electronic, metal, alt rock, and oldies, all of which sound great. Don't regret my purchase at all.

Excellent and Versatile

Written By Scott, Eau Claire, WI on Monday, April 28, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have been enjoying this receiver about a week now. I am not completely tech savvy when it comes to things like networking a million devices but I can say that as far a bluetooth is concerned and and the basics of an old time analog receiver, I am very happy. I only have bluetooth devices and a couple hundred LPs which is what I use most. LPs sound great on this system. I don't have CDs but I am sure they would sound great too. I also use it for sound on my television, so I have great control and clarity when it comes to watching movies and such. Each input remembers it's own settings in regards to bass and treble which is also very cool. I do recommend this product to anyone who wants a great quality receiver but is not interested in having a big surround set up yet would like lots of new tech options. I plugged in my internet into the back of the unit from my router and now have many hundreds of digital radio channels from every corner of the world. There is much to say so I recommend looking at the specs and if you do not know a lot about networking, you may need to find a friend that does to help you out with sharing your computer files wirelessly with the receiver. Thanks.
Pros:
Pros are the massive versitility and new technology while getting away from the surround sound thing and getting back to the basics of a STEREO two channel high powered receiver. For me a phono input is always one of the essenital requirements. I cannot imagine this unit being a dissapointment to anyone.
Cons:
In regards to the cons of this unit, it is heavily dependant on the remote control. There is precious little you can do without the remote in fact. That includes adjusting bass, treble, and even balance, not to mention all the higher technologies that cannot be adjusted without the remote control. So, if you buy this unit, you will need to treat the remote with a lot of care as you are going to need it to work throughout the lifetime of the receiver.

Harman Kardon HK 3770

Written By Dave, Poplar Grove IL. on Tuesday, April 08, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I grew up with 2 channel stereo's. Raw power and everything was big. Old school meets new technology. Everything from the past, but better. This HK is simple to hook up, 15 minutes maybe. Simple to use and really kicks!! This is used for outdoor sound paired with NHT's, WOW!!
Pros:
Plenty of power. Simple easy, out of the box music in 15 min or less.
Cons:
None

2 questions already asked

I'm excited about the Bluetooth compatibility in this receiver. The specs show that you can input music via a Bluetooth device (playing from your Bluetooth enabled smart phone, etc.), but can it output via Bluetooth as well (connect and play through Bluetooth speakers elsewhere within range)? [ Dawn  Aug 22, 2014 ]
5 answers
  • I do not think it can output to bluetooth devices. [ JARED   Aug 25, 2014 ]
  • To my knowledge, no. Bluetooth is input only. By the way, works great. Stream Spotify [ RALPH   Aug 23, 2014 ]
  • Nope [ COLIN   Aug 22, 2014 ]
  • No, you cannot. The Bluetooth its only available up as an input [ DANIEL J   Aug 22, 2014 ]
  • I tried to do this with a small BT speaker I own and the menu on the HK will not recognize it which leads me to believe the BT feature is for input only. I think I get where you are going with this, using portable speakers around the house or out on the deck. I do this through Airplay compatible speakers. However, these are going to be more costly than any BT speakers. Even though this doesn't help your quest. I did find that pairing my iPhone with the HK-3770, allowed me to control limited playlist controls using the HK remote. Pause, play, previous & next track, etc. I thought that was a nice touch. [ BILL   Aug 22, 2014 ]
Can anyone tell me whether the subwoofer output is filtered or unfiltered? If you connect to LFE, how do you control crossover? Tried pairing with psw505 both line and LFE and all I have is a booming muddy mess! [ Binks  Jun 02, 2014 ]
2 answers
  • Harry, The output is filtered. As far as I know it is a set crossover with no variability. You can change the "bass" setting under tone control, but that will affect your regular speakers as well. I believe the crossover setting on the HK is relatively high, as I use the crossover on my sub to attenuate down to about 80 Hz and the bass sounds cleaner. I see on your polk there are two inputs? I would recommend plugging into the non-LFE input and using the crossover on the sub to get it sounding how you want. The HK will still filter the signal but then your sub will filter it further, just make sure you are plugging into the Sub Out on the HK. Definitely took me a while to get my sub sounding how I wanted though. What helped me actually was calling Crutchfield Tech Support, they have professionals who are happy to help with questions like this, they helped me with setting my crossover and sub placement. Hope this helps! [ COLIN   Jun 02, 2014 ]
  • I have no idea what your acronyms represent, but I do understand "booming muddy mess". I am also very disappointed that there seems to be no crossover control for my subwoofer. I have the same, uncontrollable, "booming muddy mess." I replaced my HK AVR140 with the HK3770. I considered the AVR140 to be a low-end HK receiver, but it had terrific bass control. I expected the same level of control on this receiver, but didn't get it. I've had better bass control on a rental, U-Haul truck radio than on the HK3770 [ BILL   Jun 02, 2014 ]
