Clean sound from a new "green" technology

Harman Kardon has been working to make their receivers more energy efficient without compromising sound quality. The HK 3770 represents the fruits of their labor. It utilizes Harman Kardon's GreenEdge™ technology. Rather than redesigning the high-current Class AB amplification stage, this receiver features a new digital power supply. Unlike conventional analog power supplies, this new digital design uses less energy, fewer raw materials, and produces less heat. The result is a lightweight, efficient, eco-friendly receiver that delivers the same sonic benefits we've come to expect from this audio innovator.

Enjoy wireless music from smartphones, tablets, and computers

The HK 3770 offers two ways to stream music wirelessly. Built-in Bluetooth lets you stream tunes from a smartphone, tablet, and even some computers without a home network. It's the easiest way to enjoy your digital music collection with room-filling sound. If you have a large digital collection stored on a networked computer or NAS, the HK 3770 is Internet-ready. Connect it to your network router and stream music from your computer over your wireless home network. You can also listen to thousands of free Internet radio streams from stations around the world, going far beyond the reach of the built-in AM/FM tuner. Download the free Harman Kardon remote app to your iOS® or Android™ device and use it to control the receiver. App control requires a wireless home network and a wired connection between your receiver and your network router.

Connect your iPhone or USB thumb drive

The USB port on the HK 3770's front panel lets you plug in your iPhone®, iPod®, or iPad® to listen to music. This connection bypasses the device's digital-to-analog converters in favor of the receiver's high-performance DACs. That means you'll get smoother sound with more detail than your iPhone can deliver on its own. You can also use the receiver's remote to control playback with connected Apple® devices. The USB port is also great for playing digital music files on thumb drives by popping them into the USB port.

Output Power: The Harman/Kardon HK3770 stereo receiver features a 120 watt x 2-channel (8-ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, THD 0.07%) amplifier for great sound quality with little distortion even at high volumes.

High-Resolution 24-bit/192kHz DAC: This stereo receiver is equipped with a 24-bit/192-kHz DAC for excellent sound quality reproduction that is natural sounding.

Harman Volume: Harman volume is an advanced digital signal processing technology to control playback volume. It evens out the volume level on everything you watch, improving your listening experience. Once you choose the volume level, Harman Volume does the rest. It helps you avoid volume increases from commercials, volume differences when you change channels or switch sources, and brings out the dialog.

Analog Inputs/Output: The Harman/Kardon stereo receiver features five analog stereo RCA inputs to connect up to five audio components, and one stereo RCA record output to connect to a CD-recorder and other recording device. Included in the five analog inputs is a Phono input (MM) for vinyl playback.

Digital Inputs: The HK3770 receiver is equipped with two optical (toslink) digital inputs and one coaxial (RCA) digital input for connection of a TV or media streaming device.

Phono Input: In addition to the five analog inputs, the stereo receiver is fitted with a Phono input (MM) for vinyl playback.

A & B Speaker Terminals: This receiver features two sets of speaker outputs (A & B), each with binding-post terminals. You can independently turn on or off each pair of speakers, as well as play both pair of speakers. The speaker pairs are wired internally in parallel. These binding post terminals will accept bare wire (up to 10AWG), pin-connectors, and banana plugs (single or dual).

Subwoofer Output: The stereo receiver is equipped with a mono subwoofer output for connecting a powered subwoofer. The output is full-range, so you will need to connect a powered subwoofer with a built-in crossover.

Headphone Jack: There is a full-size (1/4") headphone jack on the front panel. When headphones are plugged in the speaker outputs are automatically muted.

Network & Tuner Functions

Ethernet LAN Port: The H/K stereo receiver is fitted with a RJ-45 Ethernet (LAN) port to connect the receiver to your home network to access your DLNA music server or Internet Radio.

Internet Radio (from vTuner): You can also listen to Internet radio stations using the vTuner Internet Radio Station database service particularly customized for this unit, providing a database of numerous radio stations around the world. You can search for Internet Radio stations by Location, Genre, New, Popular, or Podcast. You can store up to 30 of your favorite stations.

DLNA Certified: The HK3770 is DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) 1.5 and Windows 7/8 compliant for audio networking. This means it's easier for you to access and enjoy digital music stored on your PC. Compatible music files include MP3 (32-320kbps; 8-48kHz) and WMA (5-192kbps; 8-48kHz). You can use your PC to play music content through your audio system, or use the H/K receiver to browse and play music files on computer's hard drive. You can control playback of your streamed audio files from the network receiver's remote control. The receiver also supports ID3-Tag and META tag information so song title, artist name, and album name can be displayed from the unit's front-panel display.

AM/FM Tuner: The Harman/Kardon stereo receiver features a built-in AM/FM tuner with manual, seek, and preset tuning (auto/manual). You can store up to 30 AM/FM presets (in any combination). You're able to scan through these presets (5-seconds each) to help you search for your favorite music. You also can tune directly to a station using the numeric keypad on the included remote control.

USB/iPod Integration

Front-Panel USB Port: This stereo receiver is equipped with a front-panel USB (type-A) port that allows you to enjoy playback of MP3 (32-320kbps; 8-48kHz) and WMA (5-192kbps; 8-48kHz) music files from a USB mass storage class memory device; such as select Android smartphones (Froyo/Gingerbread OS only), portable MP3 players, or USB thumbdrives (not compatible with USB HDDs). The USB device must be formatted in FAT or FAT32. Using the unit's front-panel display and included remote control, you can browse your stored music files on your connected USB memory device. USB portable audio devices that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the network stereo receiver's USB port (5V/0.5A).

Note: This unit does not support AAC or Apple lossless files.

iPod/iPhone Direct: The USB (type-A) port on the front-panel provides convenient connection for your iPod/iPhone so you can listen to your stored music and music apps through the H/K stereo receiver. The iPod/iPhone USB digital connection means that the digital audio signal from your iPod/iPhone is transmitted directly to the system, minimizing noise interference and allowing use of the receiver's DAC, not the DAC in your iPod/iPhone. This results in more precise sound reproduction. You can choose to control your Apple device from its clickwheel/touchscreen or from the receiver.. Basic playback functions (such as Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track) can be controlled by the receiver's remote. Song/artist information on your iPod/iPhone will display on your connected the unit's front-panel display. Your iPod/iPhone's battery will be charged while connected to the receiver. Using the Lightning- or Dock-cable that came with your Apple device to connect directly to the H/K stereo receiver, iPod/iPhone compatibility is as follows (as of 9/25/2014):

Remote Control

Built-in Bluetooth: The Harman/Kardon receiver features built-in Bluetooth with support for profiles A2DP 1.2 and AVRCP 1.3. You'll be able to wirelessly stream stored music and music apps from your Bluetooth-enabled Apple device, Android smartphone/tablet, portable audio player, laptop, or PC to the H/K receiver. You will also be able to control basic playback functions (Play/Pause, Fast Forward/Rewind, Previous/Next Track) using the receiver's remote control. Advanced music operation will still need to be handled from your Bluetooth-enable device. There is no song/artist information display on the receiver's front-panel display. Continue to use your Bluetooth device's screen to view song/artist info.

Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the H/K receiver.

Remote Control: The HK3770 comes with an IR remote control for wireless operation of the receiver and your connected USB or iPod device.

H/K Remote App: Downloading the free Harman/Kardon Remote app from the iTunes App store onto your Apple iOS (5.0+) device or from the Google Play Store onto your Android (2.2+) device lets you control the HK3770 receiver from your smartphone or tablet device. You'll also be able to control your Apple iOS or Android device's stored music from the Harman/Kardon Remote app.

  • Source Selection: You'll be able to access and select all of the receiver source inputs (Analog 1-5 inputs, Phono input, Optical/Coaxial, DLNA, vTuner, Bluetooth, USB, or iPod) through your Apple iOS or Android device with the Harmon/Kardon Remote app installed.
  • Audio Settings: You have control of the receiver 's Volume and other audio adjustments through the Harman/Kardon Remote app and your Apple iOS/Android device.
  • Music Control: You can control all the music you have stored on your compatible Apple iOS/Android device through the Harman/Kardon Remote app. You'll be able to search your music by Song, Artist, Album, Playlist, and Genre. You also get basic playback functions such as Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track, Fast Forward/Rewind, and Repeat/Random. To access music apps, you'll need to exit the Harman/Kardon Remote app and select your desired music app on your iOS or Android device.

IR Input/Output: There is one minijack (3.5mm) remote input and one minijack (3.5mm) remote output on the rear panel of this unit. If the receiver is placed behind a solid or smoked glass door, the obstruction may prevent the front panel IR sensor from receiving commands from the remote. If the unit is positioned so the front panel IR sensor cannot receive commands from the remote, an optional IR repeater system (sold separately) may be connected to the Remote IR In jack and positioned to accept commands from the remote. The Remote IR Out jack can be connected to the remote input jack of compatible equipment to relay commands to that equipment.

Trigger Output: This minijack (3.5mm) output sends a 12-volt DC turn-on signal to another component that accepts a 12-volt trigger, such as a CD player or powered subwoofer.

I like the specs of this receiver more than some of equal priced stereo amps you have available. Can I hook another receiver pre-out to any of the HK-3770 analog inputs? According to the manual it only makes reference to cd/dvd/etc although these are examples only.

can you use your phone to turn on the receiver via Bluetooth? Can you control volume via bluetooth? Can you stream music via wifi instead of Bluetooth?

Youll have to use the remote or the main power switch on the unit to power up.. it streams Bluetooth very well but i haven't tried to use wifi. The sound quality is incredible for the price point and when paired with my svs speakers it produces a clean, warm sound at both low and high volume. It may not have as many bells and whistles as some newer Yamaha units but i really like the sound.

Can't use phone to turn receiver on and off. Cell phone can be used to regulate the volume. The receiver receives my stream through Bluetooth not WIFI

Rated at 60 watts per channel, however, this is not a heavy duty amp/ receiver. Normal performance with nice features and a good remote. I'm driving Klipsch Heresy speakers which are 8 ohm high efficiency speakers that can accept up to 105 watts. I will supplement my system with a vintage Onkyo high power amp for more depth and concert like sound.

how can you hook-up Bluetooth speakers without hardwiring? I have an older model H/K Receiver that"s simuliar to the avertised receiver. I've been trying to figure out how I can connect Bluetooth Speakers to this receiver. Can anyone assist me?

Don't think it will work like that. The receiver streams on blue tooth from source such as a iPhone and the system becomes the speaker for that source. There may be something you could purchase to make it connect to a blue tooth speaker probably did a IT person to answer that.

Can one of the aux inputs be assigned the name "phono?" I'd prefer to use my own MM preamp, which presents a standard line level output, so I'd like the receiver front panel and the smartphone app to select that aux input when I choose "phone."

Off the top of my head, I can't answer your question. I believe there is flexiblity for use of aux inputs. The best advice I can offer is to review the manual and to test it to see if it will do what you want.

Sorry, I don't know. It will scroll through some options but I can't recall if one of them was 'phono'. My turntable uses the preamp in the receiver.

Never seen an answer to a single question I've posed, but I'll try again. The 3770 doesn't support apple lossless. I have a mac and an iphone. What lossless music sources can I use and how?

A
Apple's Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC), or Apple Lossless Encoder (ALE) have not been proprietary since about 2011. At that time Apple provided the royalty free open source to all. Many free conversion software programs are available to everyone, From the description of the Harman Kardon HK 3770 Stereo Receiver: "Complete connectivity, including a phono input, AM/FM radio, digital audio inputs (1 coaxial/2 optical), home network DLNA, vTuner Internet radio, iOS Direct with built-in DAC (digital-to-analog converter), or audio file play via USB." I would say it's not a problem. However, if I'm in error just convert the ALAC file to anything else you are accustomed. Hope this helps, BB

Hi Jim, I don't know about other lossless music sources . While I am not a complete audio geek, I do care about what my music sounds like. The HK3770 is the best stereo receiver I have ever owned. My musical tastes run the gamut from jazz to very heavy metal, and sometimes I like my music loud (Ok, very loud ??)!! I have my HK3770 paired with a Bose 3-2-1 speaker set, and am completely satisfied with the sound. Most of my music listening is through my computer, which I have hardwired in to the receiver. I have several hundred gigs I have saved from my cd collection , and it all sounds great. I also listen through my phone using the Bluetooth portal. The highs are crystal clear, and the bass is well defined and will pound the house when you want it to. I also have my tv hardwired in, and enjoy the occasional concert video. The music always sounds bright and real, listening to artists ranging from Stevie Ray Vaughan to Five Finger Death Punch to Etta James to Anugama, my music always sounds the way I want it to, with volume ranging from barely heard to hurt your ears loud! I've been contemplating purchasing a second HK3770 to replace the old Technics amp in my garage. With the Bose speaker set up, I have no need of a surround sound system, but when watching a movie with my wife, the sound is real and believable. I bought the HK3770 after conferring with a Crutchfield audio advisor and am completely satisfied with my purchase. When I buy another audio receiver, this is the only 1 I will consider. I hope this helps.

According to the owner's manual, the Harman Kardon HK 3770 receiver goes to standby mode automatically if the following occurs: --For digital sources (Optical/Coaxial), after remaining idle for 15 minutes --For analog sources (USB/FM/AM/Aux/Phono/DLNA/iPod/Bluetooth), after 8 hours with no user input (for example, adjusting volume, navigating through menu options and so on) There does not appear to be any way to turn that feature "off" either. I'm driving Polk Audio RTi A7 speakers is this sufficient power?
jim  Apr 24, 2017

Polk's are power hungry, don't know about Sansui speakers. 120 WPC is minimal. 200 WPC is better.
thomas j  Dec 01, 2020
A
Nice idea. I do not know the Polk's power demands or efficiency. I am driving a pair of Sansui three way monitors, and a pair of two way speakers with no problem. Often both pair simultaneously. The amp feels like it is at least a real 100 or 150 wpc.

Q
Can an external equalizer be hooked up to this unit?
kirk  Apr 13, 2016
4 answers
A
Not in the typical way an equalizer is connected. There is no tape loop, or monitor loop, to connect an EQ. I use one connected to an aux input, with my different sources connected to the EQ inputs so I can adjust the frequencies of the signal. With this set up, you won't be able to EQ the tuner or any sources that do not plug into the EQ. I use the HK as an amp, so every source inputs through an aux input. No tape loop is a downfall of this unit.

I hate to admit this, but I have no idea. We use the remote to set the internal tonal controls. I will say that I like the HK 3770 and its flexibility with other inputs such as my wife's iPhone to stream music. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

The receiver does not have a tape loop like old-style units, so I think the answer is "no".

Q
Is it possible to connect a TV to this receiver?
hr  Feb 22, 2016
4 answers
A
This receiver has multiple analog input jacks. So long as you have an analog output source from your tv or dvr, it should work fine. However, there may be better choices for tv. I bought this unit specifically because I have built in speakers throughout my house, and only wanted stereo output. It has Bluetooth which allows me to stream music from my iPad. I recommend you call Crutchfield and tell them how you want to use the unit. They are very good at helping a person make the right selection.

I did not try directly. I did connect my Blu-Ray player using a digital cable and that works as expected for DCs, DVD/Blu-Rays, and streaming. I don't think my TV has Digital audio out
charles  Feb 22, 2016
A
Absolutely. It has both digital and RCA analog inputs, and I have a TV connected to it with the former. Note that because it is a stereo receiver, you won't get surround sound from TV, movies, etc. If that's important to you, you should look at an AV receiver, e.g., 5.1, or 7.1.

What is environment temperature and clearance spec.?
john j.  Feb 14, 2016
1 answer
A
The following "placement tips" are listed in the Owner's Manual for this receiver: -Maintain a clearance of at least 12"(30cm) on each side of, above and behind the unit. If you install the Stereo receiver in a cabinet or other enclosed area, provide cooling air within the cabinet. Under some circumstances a fan may be required. -Do not obstruct the ventilation slots on the top of the Stereo receiver or place objects directly over them. -Do not place the Stereo recei ver directly on a carpeted surface. -Do not place the Stereo receiver in moist or humid locations, in extremely hot or cold locations, in areas near heaters or heat registers, or in direct sunlight. I hope that helps. My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=159

It's all about the proper file-folder structure when you copy the content to the USB drive from your computer. Properly titled folders & files will be displayed on the Harmon Kardon and you can navigate them using the supplied remote control. You will find this information, and more, by clicking the "Details" tab on the receiver's main webpage. From there, you can download the Owner's manual (Under the "What's in the Box?" heading) or you can scroll down below the "Features & Specs" table to find our "Hands On Research" section. I hope that helps!

I don't believe so. You can stream music over Bluetooth, but you cannot control the amp over Bluetooth. There is a HK remote app for android. It doesn't use Bluetooth, but it will connect to the amp over WiFi.

Joe. In all Apple, so I can't answer for Android. There is an app for iOS called H/K Remote. I assume it is available on other platforms. It's functionality is questionable. If you want to achieve full, smartphone control of your HK3770, get a Harmony Remote with a Hub. That's all you need to run your AV from your phone, tablet or handheld remote. They just added perimeters for the HK3700&3770.

I'm a Mac guy, but I figure this would work depending on the output settings on the PC. My question would be "why"? There are probably other outputs on the PC. Yes, any sound you can put over Bluetooth from your iMac or iPad/iPod will play. The bummer is you can only have one BT device at a time paired - that means if you have an iPad paired and you want a laptop paired, you have to disconnect the old and connect the new device. It's kind of lame, but overall it works.

what is the bluetooth range, ie: receiver in living room and my smartphone by the pool? Thanx
greg  Jan 31, 2015
8 answers
A
Hi Greg, we use it in our office and have no problems connecting from distances up to 60 or 70 feet away and could probably connect from farther, however there are no walls in our office so I couldn't speak to how much the walls of your home could interfere with the signal.
nicholas  Feb 02, 2015
A
Not sure about range but we've been outside on our deck maybe 100 feet away from receiver and have had no problems. I don't like using our smart phone with the receiver because whenever it rings or gets a text/email, the music turns off. We only use the Bluetooth when our internet is unstable.
david  Feb 01, 2015
A
I'm not entirely sure the receiver determines that. I think it depends on how powerful your phone is since it is what is sending the signal. I believe the receiver is a passive listener. But in any case there are three standard ranges according to Bluetooth the company: ~3ft, ~33ft, ~300ft. I'd guess it was the middle one. Mine works at about 30 feet fine. It should work if you are within that range although walls/glass doors will shorten that distance some. Hope that helped :D
brett benjamin  Feb 01, 2015
A
Haven't' tested full range but works anywhere on the first floor of a 3500 sq ft house, probably a good 50' at least
kevin  Jan 31, 2015
A
Good question. I decided to plot this out within the house. I was able to get 47 feet from the receiver before the signal started to sputter from an iPhone 5S. This was slightly indirect with some wall coverage. I can't speak to exterior wall interference. And with a backyard of snow, I aint going out to calculate a Bluetooth signal.
bill  Jan 31, 2015
A
I have mine installed inside the exterior wall of a three season room near our pool. Inside the room it is absolutely reliable with iPads and iPhones. About 30 feet away outdoors is where it starts cutting out
brent  Jan 31, 2015
A
I use at fairly short range 10-12 feet ... I could not tell you how far as I have not tested that. And beside I haveno idea how far apart or how many walls exist between your pool and living room...or why if you are at the pool why you want music in your living room. The receiver sounds fantastic though
richard  Jan 31, 2015
A
Typically 30 feet, but depends on interference and objects between.

Wish I could help, but I don't know what you're asking. I only use it for Pandora which is controlled by my Onkyo. The HK is for outdoor sound only. I can tell you it's an awesome receiver, Sorry, Dave.
david  Oct 29, 2014
A
It is phono-ready, and can play almost any flavor of MP3 or WMA audio formats, except lossless WMA. There is no indication that it can play FLAC. The DLNA support seems to be pretty good. I have a dedicated NAS on the same network subnet at the HK receiver and I use the NAS to serve up highest quality MP3 (ripped with LAME-extreme VBR) and things sound excellent. this unit's strength is in the multiple ways of connecting to it - Bluetooth (3770), direct (internal) conversion from external media players, ethernet, analog RCA phone inputs, and optical inputs that I have my TV connected to.
kevin  Oct 28, 2014
A
Sorry I do not understand the question. We play our playlists through the HK 3770 both wireless (Bluetooth) and plug in from our iPhones and iPads. Hope this is helpful.
william j  Oct 28, 2014
A
If you use the receiver as a media player (such as plugging a thumb drive with just music files) no, you cannot play flac. But connect anything that can play flac with all digital connections and it will. My setup is a small media computer with an optical audio port connected to the optical input on the receiver. In this setup the receiver doesn't have to read the files (the computer does that) it just processes the signal from digital to analog, amplifies it, and sends it out to the speakers (all beautifully I may add). So file type is irrelevant to the receiver this way. I hope that helps.

I'm excited about the Bluetooth compatibility in this receiver. The specs show that you can input music via a Bluetooth device (playing from your Bluetooth enabled smart phone, etc.), but can it output via Bluetooth as well (connect and play through Bluetooth speakers elsewhere within range)?

I tried to do this with a small BT speaker I own and the menu on the HK will not recognize it which leads me to believe the BT feature is for input only. I think I get where you are going with this, using portable speakers around the house or out on the deck. I do this through Airplay compatible speakers. However, these are going to be more costly than any BT speakers. Even though this doesn't help your quest. I did find that pairing my iPhone with the HK-3770, allowed me to control limited playlist controls using the HK remote. Pause, play, previous & next track, etc. I thought that was a nice touch.

Q
Can anyone tell me whether the subwoofer output is filtered or unfiltered? If you connect to LFE, how do you control crossover? Tried pairing with psw505 both line and LFE and all I have is a booming muddy mess!
harry  Jun 02, 2014
2 answers
A
Harry, The output is filtered. As far as I know it is a set crossover with no variability. You can change the "bass" setting under tone control, but that will affect your regular speakers as well. I believe the crossover setting on the HK is relatively high, as I use the crossover on my sub to attenuate down to about 80 Hz and the bass sounds cleaner. I see on your polk there are two inputs? I would recommend plugging into the non-LFE input and using the crossover on the sub to get it sounding how you want. The HK will still filter the signal but then your sub will filter it further, just make sure you are plugging into the Sub Out on the HK. Definitely took me a while to get my sub sounding how I wanted though. What helped me actually was calling Crutchfield Tech Support, they have professionals who are happy to help with questions like this, they helped me with setting my crossover and sub placement. Hope this helps!
colin  Jun 02, 2014
A
I have no idea what your acronyms represent, but I do understand "booming muddy mess". I am also very disappointed that there seems to be no crossover control for my subwoofer. I have the same, uncontrollable, "booming muddy mess." I replaced my HK AVR140 with the HK3770. I considered the AVR140 to be a low-end HK receiver, but it had terrific bass control. I expected the same level of control on this receiver, but didn't get it. I've had better bass control on a rental, U-Haul truck radio than on the HK3770
