Our take on the iSimple Media Gateway

by Zak Billmeier
iSimple

iSimple's PXAMG Media Gateway lets you add iPod control to your compatible satellite-ready factory stereo. The Media Gateway connects directly to your vehicle's factory radio with a vehicle-specific adapter (not included), so you'll enjoy the best possible sound quality.

iPod® control with factory radio
You'll control your iPod with your factory stereo, so you won't have to fumble around for your iPod while you drive, and you can stash it somewhere out of harm's way. You'll also find an auxiliary audio input for a Dock & Play satellite radio or another audio source.

Want satellite radio?
You can also get Sirius satellite radio reception through your factory radio. Just use the optional SatWire cable to connect the the Sirius SC-C1 tuner to the Media Gateway. You'll be able to access Sirius channels with your radio's controls, and you'll see artist and song info on your radio's display.

Please enter your vehicle information or call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to find out if there's a vehicle-specific harness available for your vehicle. Warranty: 1 year.

Compatibility Note: Be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this iPod adapter.

Works Great

Written By John S, Savannah, GA on Wednesday, March 30, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this unit in my wife's 2007 Saturn Aura. Hooked it up acording to the instructions included, and the battery kept draining and XM would keep interupting. Called Crutchfield and they had no answer. Called Peripheral and found out the diagram sent to me was not right for my car. Changed a couple of wires, and now it works like a charm !! Crutchfield did include vehicle specific instructions for removing the dash trims and radio and this was VERY helpful. Made the job super easy !! If the wiring instructions for the PXAMG2 harness were correct for my vehicle, this whole job would have taken about :45

2008 Tahoe Application - PERFECT

Written By Kevin, Fenton, MO on Wednesday, September 29, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this product and it was delivered today. The insructions that accompanied the device and the GM wiring harness (sold separately) were perfectly illustrated. I did contact technical support - but only for a few minutes - and the support was outstanding. Ultimately, the device installed without any problems and works perfectly. My iPod is now securely out of sight and the steering wheel controls on my 2008 Tahoe allow me the freedom to navigate my playlists. If anyone out there is currently using anything other than a hard-wire device, I would strongly recommend getting this product. A+ Thank you Crutchfield!

Buggy interface, does not work with new iPhone updates

Written By Rich, New Jersey on Tuesday, June 22, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This interface was buggy from the time I installed it. Exchanged for another thinking it was defective, but the new one is just as bad. I've put up with it for almost two years too many. Every other person on the message boards acknowledges the same odd behavior of this unit, causing radio to stutter, preset buttons don't work as they should, etc. I've performed firmware updates as per the manufacturer's support, no luck. I updated my iPhone to the new iOS 4 last night and now the PXAMG does not work with it at all. Other users have this problem as well. This company's iPod and iPhone interfaces are terrible. Last time I had one, I got rid of it and got the USA Spec version. I was happy with that one for many years. And that is exactly what I am doing today. Ripping out this thing and ordering the PA15-HON2.

Does what it says

Written By Jon, Austin, TX on Saturday, April 10, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed in my 2006 Honda Ridgeline. I was not happy with the controls from the factory stereo. I think other Honda models may have better luck (those with large displays in the factory radio). Choosing artist, playlist etc. is way to hard. Steering wheel controls (next/prev song) worked fine. The sound quality was also not very good (although much better than an FM transmitter). I burned an MP3 to a CD and the sound quality of the burned CD was much better than the same song playing through my connected iPhone.

I plan to return this unit and will likely replace my factory head unit with one that supports the iphone.

The Crutchfield staff was a pleasure to deal with as always! After sending an email to support I was contacted immediately!

Media Gateway

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great product. Installed in an 07 Solstice. None of the other manufacturer's of similar products have been able to get this year/model working, but PAC Audio got it right. If there is one shortcoming it would be that volume is a lower than the radio, CD, etc, so you've got to turn it up quite a bit to enjoy. There may be a fix for that too that i haven't discovered yet.

Nice product

Written By Rick, Pasadena, MD on Thursday, May 07, 2009

Perfect solution. Install was pretty easy but I did have to go to the manufacturer's website to find a special instruction for my car. With instructions and addendum supplied control through the factory radio would not work properly. Works fine now.

iSimple Media Gateway

Written By Bernard, Wisconsin on Sunday, April 26, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Peripheral gateway installs easily and performs as advertised. I had only one small issues which was addressed in the addendum material included with the unit. On my 2005 Mustang Shaker 500 system with 6 disc in-head-unit changer, I had to flip DIP switch 1 down (On) because the iPod was not controllable via the radio until doing so.

I would recommend this unit to friends and would highly recommend purchasing from Crutchfield. The included vehicle data sheet made removing the necessary interior panels easy and straight forward.

Thanks Crutchfield for offering great products and excellent supporting materials.

Everything as advertised

Written By Michael, Bremerton, WA on Monday, April 20, 2009

I purchased this unit after much research and am very pleased with it. I have a 2006 Ford Explorer EB with rear seat DVD. I was concerned that the DVD player would not actually work as advertised but it does. The install instructions from Crutchfield were excellent and detailed but I opted for a professional install when I was unable to get the radio back in the dash all the way with the additional cabling back there. So far it seems to be an excellent unit. I guess I'm not that bothered by the steering wheel control situation mentioned by the other 2006 Explorer owner.

A Must for IPOD Users

Written By Bruce, Crestview, FL on Tuesday, November 18, 2008

If you have a factory stereo and don't want to replace with an after-market stereo, this is what you are looking for. I was skeptical the product wouldn't work as well as it said it would. I installed it into my wifes 2006 Honda Pilot and had some issues with getting it set up. I called the manufacturer because set up was a liitle vague. They walked me through getting it set up which took all of 30 minutes, to include installation, thanks to Crutchfields detailed print-outs. I highly recommend product!!!!!!

It works

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After researching all of the available iPod options for my '04 Accord EX (no nav), I finally called and they explained that this is the most recent product to come out and recommend this over all the others. It has slightly more/better features than the others.
- Installation was easy
- Manual is very simple (although I almost missed the part about switching from Aux to iPod).
- iPod text shows up perfectly on the factory head unit (in Sat mode)
- CanNOT control iPod from head unit and iPod at the same time, but not really an issue since head unit control is good.
- Sound quality is good
Highly recommended overall.

Great addition to stock stereo

Written By Todd, FW,TX on Thursday, November 06, 2008

This is a great addition to a factory head unit. I installed this myself in a '08 Pontiac G5 GT with a Factory/Pioneer system. This unit allows you to control your Ipod through the stereo and add an HD Radio tuner. I routed the Ipod cable into the glove box so now it's not out in the open in the Texas sun in summer. You can also select AUX 1 & allow a passenger to use the controls on the Ipod. It helps alot when they can just access the Ipod instead of trying to fumble through the learning curve of using the factory stereo controls.

I was extremely happy with the Crutchfield staff, from my advisor Mike & the tech. help from a very patient Russ. I struggled with getting the unit to work & called in for help, Russ was very helpful & patient as I tried everything to get the unit to work. I can tell you from experience that sometimes the harnesses "click" together but don't actually make the full "click". All in all a great experience for a 1st time shopper!!!

It Does What It Claims

Written By slavenck, Chicago, IL on Sunday, November 02, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit, when properly installed, will allow you to play your ipod through your car stereo. I have an '06 Honda Pilot LX with Nav + XM. I bought a new Nano G4, which it is compatible for playing, but not for charging. (The Peripheral folks, whom I contacted, are working on a solution, but nothing is available yet.) I'm OK with that. Installation (Thanks, Jason in Tech) was a breeze because of the excellent photos I received via email. (I'm usually pretty handy, but not so much with cars). The controls to operate the unit take a bit getting used to -- not very intuitive, but good instructions and you do get used to it. Your STEERING WHEEL RADIO CONTROLS WILL NOT WORK. I'm OK with that, but you should be aware of it before purchase.

This device does maintain xm radio, and displays track and artist info on the radio display in the vehicle for ipod tracks. Is supports playlists and random music functions. My only disappointment is that i cannot skip tracks, forward or reverse with my steering wheel controls.

Great expandability but can't use steering wheel controls

Written By Jason, Tampa, FL on Friday, September 12, 2008

I installed this in a 2006 Ford Explorer with 6 Disc MP3 and rear seat DVD.

This works great as advertised and does the job nicely. The addition of an aux input, plus HD radio capability is also a plus. It also allows you to keep the factory satellite radio and rear seat DVD.

One caveat however, is that on Fords, or at least some such as mine, you cannot use the steering wheel controls to change tracks since the interface is emulating the satellite radio. In satellite radio mode the steering wheel controls cycle through presets. This means that pushing the seek controls on the steering wheel while in ipod mode brings you into the ipod menu, which is nearly useless since to do anything there you still have to use the controls on the radio. As much as I like this interface, that was almost a deal breaker for me, but I'm sticking with it because of the number of inputs this interface allows.
