Our take on the PAC RP4-GM31 Factory Integration Adapter

by Jon Paulette

PAC's RP4-GM31 radio replacement interface lets you replace the factory radio in select 2006-up General Motors vehicles, and still retain your factory warning chimes, and your steering wheel audio controls. With an additional adapter, you can also keep your rear seat entertainment system and rear seat controls. The interface also works with GM's Bose® system, tying your new car stereo into the factory amplifier.

Another plus — the RP4-GM31 adapter eliminates the need for the steering wheel audio control adapter that's usually required for your vehicle, saving you some cash. See Details for a list of compatible car stereos. Warranty: 1 year.

Please enter your vehicle information or call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to find out if this adapter is compatible with your vehicle.

Important Note: This interface does not retain your vehicle's OnStar functionality. You'll need PAC's OS-4 interface to keep that safety feature working with a new car stereo.

Note: Most vehicles will require additional installation parts — please identify your vehicle if you haven’t done so, then check here for a list of parts. You can also call an Advisor for more information.

Features

Overview: The RadioPro4 (RP4-GM31) is a radio replacement and SWC (steering wheel control) interface that comes pre-loaded with amplifier retention and SWC software, navigation based output signals, and firmware that retains all of the vehicle's original safety and convenience features when replacing the factory radio with an aftermarket head unit.

Functionality: The RP4-GM31 interface allows the replacement of a factory radio in select GM vehicles with the CAN-bus system. Using this interface will retain factory features such as steering wheel controls (SWC), rear seat entertainment (RSE), rear seat control (RSC), the factory Bose amplifier, and Warning Chimes whenever the original radio is removed. In order to retain rear seat entertainment (RSE), you will also need the PAC GMRVD GM Rear Seat Video Retention Adapter (127GMRVD, sold separately). The RP4-GM31 also provides data bus driven outputs such as retained accessory power (RAP), vehicle speed sensor (VSS), illumination, reverse trigger, and parking brake.

Note: The RadioPro4 (RP4-GM31) does not retain OnStar. For OnStar retention, please use the PAC OS-4 (127OS4, sold separately). If your vehicle is equipped with a digital amplifier, you will lose fading capabilities when the new aftermarket radio is installed.

Vehicle Compatibility: The RadioPro4 (RP4-GM31) is compatible with select 2006-up GM vehicles with  databus radios. Compatible vehicles as of 7/13/2012 include:

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy to install, had some static background noise when radio was off - fantastic Crutchfield support sent out some ground loop/noise suppressors for the speaker inputs right away and that solved the problem.
Pros:
Easy to install. Retains the expected OEM features - steering wheel controls and warning chimes etc.
Cons:
OEM turn signal is a kind of "tick" noise. This box provides more of a "blip" noise - not a big con, just something I didn't expect...

I had a problem with my radio interface, and Crutchfield tech support suggested I replace it with this one. I didn't relish the idea of hours on end trying to figure and configure the new unit. This was pretty much a plug and play. I haven't fully tested it yet, but it seems to be fine.
Pros:
Smaller than the GMOS-100 that I originally installed.
Cons:
none yet

WORKS OK

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had a professional install done, it only cost $65 to put the Kenwood CD player into the Avalanche and also put the GM factory integration adaptor box into the factory wire harness so the steering wheel buttons and paddles worked the radio. I unplugged the Sirus On Star as that is useless and expensive especially with the Kenwood though it does run that if you like with the purchase of an adaptor box. GM can start my truck, open doors and even roll down windows or GPS me, well so can hackers, and GM can also stop my truck/car with a push of a button ... unplugging the roof antenna suited my fancy. The steering wheel controls all work, most of them the same as before, some slightly differently but in a good way. I purchased the DPX300U as I just wanted to use the ipod that this keeps charged up and did not want bluetooth or cell phone or any other redundant features of the more expensive DPX500BT. If you are upgrading your car or truck also get the factory speakers replaced (the four bigger ones) as the factory ones can not even handle the factory GM radio/CD player. The Kenwood puts down a rather clean audio signal but it pushes the speakers a bit harder.
Pros:
I think it works the controls better now, though what the factory had them set to was slightly different. Volume up and down is the same. Channel advance up and down is now search up and down. Source is still source. Search button is now band switch so that FM 1 and FM 2 and FM 3 for storage of memory stations comes up. To use the memory station, I have to hit the big buttons the Kenwood dash ... not the steering wheel paddle. Also mute button is still mute.
Cons:
No down side to the GM package to my reckoning ... all the steering wheel controls work and I think better then what they were. Or at least to my driving needs. The Radio Antenna is factory and they have a factory adaptor free for you, to upgrade the antenna if you can not go in or on the window, going to another aftermarket antenna is expensive to install. The factory antenna has three bolt holes to hold the antenna on and one wire hole making upgrade install about 3 hours of body work.

Great adapter from pac, Installed in a 2007 Cadillac Escalade and it works almost flawlessly with one catch the Factory Amp turn on doesn't always work at first boot but after a radio power cycle it works fine.

This adapter Retains all my OEM features minus the onstar but it works perfectly other wise the steering wheel controls are perfect and I didn't need to program them.

This is used to integrate with the factory Bose system in '07 and up Chevy Tahoe, Suburban, etc. it is fairly simple for those that have a fair amount of electronics knowledge, if you get in a jam all you have to do is call Crutchfield, you will not only get someone fairly quickly to actually get on the line with you, but you will get someone that knows EXACTLY how to help you out, they know the products they sell, they know the vehicles you are putting them in, its incredible to say the least.
Pros:
Works perfectly with aftermarket head unit (Alpine)
Cons:

This item works well once you get it installed and programmed. It replaces the factory chime and is very quiet. Once I had it installed I had to disassemble the dash again and mount the programming box under the dash so I could hear it better. The directions could be a little more detailed.
Pros:
Does exactly what it says it does.
Cons:
Chime is quiet. Directions difficult to follow.

Easy. to install and works like advertised. I suggest wiring the unit to your stereo on the bench the day before you expect to install it so you are not in a rush to get it done. Instructions might be a little confusing to understand.
Pros:
Work as advertised
Cons:
Cost, I could have bought a more expensive stereo if this was not needed.

Very Functional; once working.

Written By mabe75, Ridgeway VA on Monday, August 12, 2013

Had some issues with making this unit operational. The manual isn't very good, however I was able to figure it out fairly easily. As stated by a previous review, don't over think it. But even after wiring the unit still didn't work correctly. Called the Crutchfield tech support and they had tips on resetting the device that worked correctly. This wasn't in the manual. After several resets, it worked correctly and still is.
Pros:
Does it's job
Cons:
Bad Manual/Install Instructions

Decent Unit

Written By RyanW, Minneapolis, MN on Friday, August 02, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The wiring and hook up is pretty straight forward. May be a little time consuming for some but it calls out very clearly what you need to do.
Pros:
Easy to follow instructions on wiring and hooking up. Anything you have questions, Crutchfield tech support was great. (as I had a few wires that did not need to be hooked up) If you need to program, it is pretty easy
Cons:
The only thing I did not like is I have to program all my steering wheel controls, on star, etc...I set it to the correct setting for my pioneer before I even installed it in my car. I worked with Crutchfield to troubleshoot and at the end, I had to program the steering wheel controls. Only reason why I find this a CON as I had to pull the unit out to get to the module, and it is such a tight spot for all the wires, it is just a pain to pull it out and put in back in with all the wires.

It is useful overall and I am very happy with the product. Generally easy to install, instructions are relatively clear and it does what it is supposed to do.
Pros:
-Easy to wire -Kept factory sounds with aftermarket head unit
Cons:
-Difficult to turn the selector arrow without stripping due to poor quality, but did make it work -While its pretty small, it was difficult to fit into the space behind the dash. I did make it work. -While it wasn't too bad to wire, there are a lot of excess wires, which could be confusing. Took some brainpower to figure it out.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Hard to get excited about an adapter but this one does what it should. I had to call support to figure out how to connect my radio to it, if you don't have the factory amp then you must cut the RCA ends off and splice your spearer out from your amp or head unit in to there the RCAs were. Only real complaint is there is a dial that you set to your head unit brand, its really soft plastic, I stripped out the screw driver slot trying to click it over.
Pros:
Does what it should
Cons:
Soft plastic on the dial where you select what head unit you have. Also the noise your dirctional makes with this is kinda strange and its not very loud.

Great integration Device

Written By JeffP, Poquoson, VA on Thursday, January 31, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This device is great. Its unfortunate that such a device is necessary these days, but it performs admirably. All my irritating factory bells, dings, and warnings still come through as advertised. Steering Wheel controls work perfectly. Wiring was very easy with the Crutchfield mastersheet and a bit of phone support. The only thing I do not like is the turn signal sound. The factory had a lond click, this is more of a digital beep. Neither is pleasant, but the beep is a bit low in volume. Overall not a large issue. but its the only downside I have found yet. I really like this product. I bought it instead of the cheaper ones so I could add all the available features in the future.
Pros:
Steering wheel controls work well. Relatively easy to install. Keeps factory safety features
Cons:
turn signal beep is a bit too quiet and odd choice of sound. Not at all a serious issue.

The adapter integrated well into my new pioneer head unit. Steering wheel controls work well. Only downside so far is that the unit was supposed to let me keep my warning chimes, but the sound does not play through the speakers. May be a faulty unit...Crutchfield is sending a new one one to try out.

I've got a 2012 Impala. With the crux interface I'm currently using I've lost the warning chime when I lock the doors using the lock button on the door. Any clue if this interface would restore that feature? [ Thomas F  Apr 14, 2014 ]

  • You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you. [ Krissy Staff  Apr 15, 2014 ]
Is there a way to adjust the warning chime volume with this or get rid of them completely? [ Justin  Jan 07, 2014 ]

  • Yes there is, to get the door charm I had to install a speaker specifically for the chime and onstar. To adjust the volume of the charm remove the head unit and the volume acceptance knob is on the back right. To verify before removal what head unit and vehicle is this instaled in? [ JAMES   Jan 10, 2014 ]
  • No I don't think you can do either. [ ZACHARY   Jan 09, 2014 ]
  • I taped a piece of cardboard on the chime to achieve a slightly lower volume. Had to experiment a little but eventually got my desired volume. Piece is hidden so I didn't worry about how it looks. 07 NBS Silverado Crew Cab [ RICK E   Jan 09, 2014 ]
  • Yes, With this adapter there is an option for chime volume adjustment. [ MICHAEL   Jan 08, 2014 ]
