Our take on the PAC RP4-VW11 Wiring Interface

by Jon Paulette
PAC

PAC's RP4-VW11 wiring interface lets you replace the factory radio in select 2002-up Volkswagen vehicles. You'll retain your factory steering wheel audio controls, the full entertainment system, and the use of your factory amplifier, if present. The interface supplies all navigation outputs and accessory power. Warranty: 1 year.

Important Note: If you have a factory amp in your vehicle, you'll lose the ability to fade from front to rear when you install a new car stereo. (See Details.) See Details for a list of compatible car stereos.

Installation Notes:

  • 2002-2005 Vehicles: This interface only works when the factory radio is a double-DIN (4" tall) radio, and does not provide a reverse output trigger.
  • 2004-2007 Touareg:  If your VW has factory navigation, this interface will not work with your digital amplified sound system.

Please enter your vehicle information or call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to find out if this model is compatible with your vehicle.

Note: Most vehicles will require additional installation parts — please identify your vehicle if you haven’t done so, then check here for a list of parts. You can also call an Advisor for more information.

Features

Radio Replacement Interface (for Volkswagen): The PAC RadioPRO 4 Radio Replacement Interface (RP4-VW11) allows the replacement of the original factory radio in select Volkswagen vehicles with an upgraded aftermarket head unit. It has been engineered to interface seamlessly with the automobile's computer data bus system, as well as retain important safety and convenience features; such as:

  • Factory amplified audio systems (including Dynaudio & Fender)
  • Steering wheel controls (SWC)
  • Rear seat entertainment (RSE)
  • Navigation based outputs (including vehicle speed sensor, reverse, & parking brake).
  • Retained accessory power (RAP)

Vehicle Compatibility: The RadioPRO 4 (RP4-VW11) is compatible with select 2002-2013 Volkswagen vehicles with factory LSFT-CAN databus radios. Compatible vehicles as of 3/12/2013 include:

Notes:
  • Premium Amplified Systems: In Premium Amplified Systems only two input channels can be used from the aftermarket radio, therefore there will be no fading capability of the aftermarket stereo. The RAP feature is not available in 2010+ vehicles equipped with a premium amplified system.
  • 2002-2005 Vehicles: In these year vehicles the RP4-VW11 does not provide a Reverse output trigger. This signal is unavailable on the data bus. You must be replacing a factory Double-DIN radio. If the vehicle came equipped with a Single-DIN radio, the RP4-VW11 is not compatible.
  • 2004-2007 Touareg: Does not retain digital audio amplified system seen when the vehicle is equipped with a factory navigation radio.

Radio Select Switch: The radio select rotary switch on the side of the interface must be adjusted to the proper radio setting before plugging the interface into the vehicle.

PAC RP4-VW11 Wiring Interface

Written By Anonymous, Albany, NY on Friday, August 29, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The wiring interface is critical to installing an aftermarket radio in a VW. The interface eventually worked like a charm, but I had significant difficulties getting the wires to properly set within the harness itself. The unit would sometimes turn on, and sometimes would not power on. After many aggravating attempts to fix the problem (along with many calls to Crutchfield- who were great), I gave up and took it to a local shop. They had to re-seat some of the wires within the harness, and then the unit worked great again. So the sum of it is- the interface works great if it works. If it doesnt, it leads to endless aggravation and a waste of time (and money, if you give up like I did).

Very good interface

Written By Hal J, Tuscaloosa, AL on Thursday, August 21, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Paired this with a Kenwood receiver in my daughter's Jetta. Install was easy and it works great. It has the ability to program some features in order to assign 2 functions to each button of the steering wheel controls (short touch and touch and hotd). Also, on her particular vehicle with a multi function display (MFD) there is a slight issue in that cycling between the pages of the MFD also skips tracks (iPhone, Pandora) or preset stations (FM, AM, SAT). This can be avoided by removing the program function for the steering buttons to change the track, or preset.
Pros:
Easy install, good value.
Cons:
None so far

Excellent Adapter

Written By alphaseinor, Denton, TX on Thursday, July 17, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this because I needed to keep the existing Monsoon amplifier, and wanted to keep the controls on the steering wheel. Everything worked, except in a 2001 Jetta I needed to provide switched power to the radio. It's unfortunate they figured out all of the CAN bus stuff for the steering wheel, but not the VW specific key power issue. Not difficult to rectify, so still gets 4 stars, I just ran a fused connection to the radio bypassing the harness connector.
Pros:
Relatively simple installation Steering wheel controls were maintained Factory Amplifer turns off when instructed
Cons:
No switched power built into the adapter.

worked great!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

2005 VW Jetta: I didn't realize it when I bought it but this adapter isn't just for the steering wheel controls. It also provides the wiring to connect your head unit's speaker and power wires to the factory harness. In other words, I didn't have to do any soldering or crimping in the car. I just soldered the new head unit's wires to the PAC adapter's wires in the comfort of my work bench. Installing the head unit in the car was literally plug n play. The VW Jetta doesn't have an accessory or switched power wire so it was great that PAC's adapter provided one. It's only rated for 1 amp but it was enough for my Pioneer deck.

The only downside is that the PAC adapter does take up some room, so you will have to be careful to move things around so there is room behind the deck when you slide it back into the dash.

Oh, and the steering wheel controls work perfectly with my Pioneer, too. I thought $79 was pretty expensive but it did save me time, make the install very easy, and allowed me to continue to use my steering wheel's stereo controls. So, in retrospect, I'd definitely buy it again.
Pros:
Makes installation very, very easy. Steering wheel controls are usable!
Cons:
A bit bulky, requiring careful arrangement of where the PAC adapter fits behind the dash.

This went in a 2013 VW Jetta TDI and worked fine with an Alpine and then a Kenwood. I'm sure theres a way for the back and forward buttons on the steering wheel to scroll through presets but thats not the way it comes setup.
Pros:
Retains steering wheels controls
Cons:
Takes up a lot of space in the dash

Works reasonably well in 2011Jetta

Written By Paul, New Hampshire on Thursday, April 17, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product allowed me to retain my 2011 VW Jetta SWC with my new Kenwood head unit. The instructions were adequate for me to get things going the first time, but I have quite a bit of experience with electronics and this type of installs, so your mileage may vary. The unit came with everything I needed to connect the Kenwood harness to the VW connector in the dash. The default program supported basic volume, next/previous track and radio station switching, but not the phone control. When changing my VW Multifunction Display mode from MPG to Time or speed display the head unit changes folder when in the USB mode which is not desirable in the least. The PAC device is made for many car models so I can expect there to be some imperfections out-of-the-box. Luckily PAC foresaw this problem and allows you to reprogram each button to a specific function. If you want to retain all SWC functionality, and want to avoid weird things happening when you press buttons, you may want to reprogram the unit, so plan on it before you close everything up like I did. Overall, I'm happy with the PAC unit and would recommend it to VW Jetta owners.
Pros:
Flexible programming interface that allows custom configurations to suit specific needs. Comes with everything needed for installation. Works well.
Cons:
Instruction manual may not provide enough information for inexperienced installers.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy plug and play. I don't have a Steering wheel control so I cant say anything about that. I have a 2003 VW Jetta with the Monsoon system. I have always read about people car battery draining after a new head unit install. That's because the monsoon factory amp doesn't have a remote turn on wire. I uses a low voltage signal from speaker wire. But for the amp to turn off it needs to ground out. That's where this device comes in. no dead battery.
Pros:
works like a charm. killer discount when you buy a head unit from Crutchfield
Cons:
have to butt connect wires or solder. finding a place to tuck it away behind dash.

Worked great. Instructions were sparse, but a little time to get it right was worth the investment.
Pros:
Steering wheel controls worked great, easy to program. Love the speed output and reverse output. Made wiring those into the radio MUCH easier.
Cons:
Lost audio menu on Steering Wheel control. Wish this kept the audio menu in the multifunction display so it wouldn't trigger station changes when I really just want to see my average MPG. FW update?

Pros:

Works as promised, but be careful!

Written By Enoryt D, Allentown, PA on Saturday, August 24, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

2003 VW Passat Wagon GLX 4MotionDevice works as promised. Steering controls volume and radio, cd, bluetooth/pandora and iPod flawlessly.
Pros:
Does everything it is supposed to do. Installation requires attention to detail. Take care of the easy ones (speakers, power, antenna, etc.), and the hard ones (remote, illumination, and the blue wires) become easy too!
Cons:
To paraphrase Sherlock Holmes, "eliminate the impossible and the results, no matter how improbable, must be the truth". There are connections that are easy (simple color matches). Tackle those first. The remaining connections may be on the Navigation trunk or those pesky blue cords (remote, antenna, etc.). Also, if you use butt connectors and heat guns, you run the risk of melting the unit. I did, but it still works. Lastly, as others pointed out, there is a lot of bulk behind the HU!

necessary evil

Written By Dave, E WVa on Friday, July 26, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's a shame that some factory stereos require a 3rd-party addon like this in order to use an aftermarket stereo. Once you start accepting that, this device works as advertised. As a bonus, it lets you keep your steering wheel audio controls (if your car has them). And it DOES work in a VW Jetta, at least the Mk4 series with the Monsoon system.
Pros:
Does exactly what it says on the box. Has all the documentation for getting it to work with all major aftermarket brands.
Cons:
Bulky; had to cut some supports out of the dashboard in order to make room for everything. Not crazy about the price either, but at least Crutchfield gives you a big discount if you buy this with the radio.

I installed this into a 2009 VW Jetta TDI with a Bluetooth after market head unit. The steering wheel controls that interface to the PAC unit worked perfectly the first time. I would highly recommend this interface unit to anyone replacing their OEM unit and want to keep the steering wheel radio and phone controls working with their new radio head unit.
Pros:
Easy plug and play installation, compact unit fits behind the new head unit in the dash with now problems.
Cons:

Installed this in my 09 Jetta with the new head unit. Made all factory interfaces with the OEM unit work flawlessly. I took the time before installing to solder all wire connections to the OEM wire connection adapter and head unit wire harness so install was literally plug and play.
Pros:
Makes all OEM functions work with new head unit. Easy install
Cons:
Directions can be confusing as it is an all in one unit and has settings for multiple different manufacturers. A bit pricey (if you wait to buy it separately)

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've never installed a car stereo before. In addition to this harness having the steering wheel controls, it also had the wires to send the power on signal to the amp/sub even though I have can bus. It prevented me from having to built some wacky fuse tap (insert mass confusion here) Everything worked the first time and my install is amazing. programming for SWC is possible.
Pros:
all-in-one for my MK6 VW Jetta clear instructions includes SWC programmable
Cons:
on bundle of wires marked as "nav system" when two of the wires were necessary for systems OUTSIDE of the nav system, confused me for a long while. sort of expensive for a harness SWC programming instructions aren't too clear on the steps.

Mostly workd

Gave it only three stars because some of the functions won't work correctly. Spent a long time with Crutchfield support. The steering wheel buttons work and nice having use of the "phone" button on the wheel. It is not putting out the P-brake signal, reciever shows it the brake being "on" all the time. It makes 1/3 of the Alpines features useless untill the car is driven a ways. Need to run the reciever's P-brake wire directly to the PB switch itself. Wished it had a foot brake wire coming out of the box too, but would it work correctly?

1 question already asked

Can anyone advise as to where the 2nd b/w wire "Remote On Input" should be wired to? The Pioneer AVH dash unit only has 1 blue/white wire for amp on. [ Gerard  Jun 14, 2014 ]

  • I believe I had the same question about 18 months ago. I called Crutchfield support and the guy walked me through the wiring thing in about 15 seconds. Sorry, I don't recall the answer though. [ JOSEPH   Jun 15, 2014 ]
