Installation Note: Some newer vehicles require a special interface for this installation. Click here to see if you need an interface to install the SWI-RC adapter in your vehicle. If you see one, add it to your cart along with this adapter.

You want to install an aftermarket stereo in your vehicle, but you hate to give up the convenience of your factory steering wheel radio controls? No problem. PAC's SWI-RC adapter allows you to use the steering wheel audio controls in a wide variety of vehicles to command select radios from Alpine, Clarion, Dual, Jensen, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer, and Sony.

Installation is straightforward — connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and your stereo, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. The direct connection to the stereo eliminates the need for an infrared emitter, allowing the interface to function even in bright sunlight. Step-by-step LED confirmation makes programming easy. Once connected, the SWI-RC's failsafe memory will learn up to 12 stereo functions, retaining them even if battery power is interrupted. Dimensions: 2"W x 7/8"H x 2-7/8"D. Warranty: 1 year.

Important Note: On some vehicles, you may need a voltmeter to locate the correct wires to connect to the SWI-RC. If you have no car audio installation experience, you should consider professional installation. The SWI-RC works with most Alpine, Clarion, Dual, Jensen, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer, and Sony stereos that have a wired remote control input port or a dedicated steering wheel input, but please call or email us to confirm compatibility with your radio.

Wiring Advisory: You'll usually have to tap into one to three wires in your vehicle at the radio location to connect this interface. If you're using a PAC OEM integration adapter to connect your new car stereo to your vehicle, then it most likely will have a prewired connector for this PAC steering wheel audio control adapter. In these cases, no additional wiring in required. PAC does provide custom wiring instructions for all confirmed compatible vehicles on their website.

What does a steering wheel audio control adapter do?

Many people aren't thrilled with the sound of their car's factory radio, but don't want to replace it because they'll lose those convenient audio controls on the steering wheel. For most vehicles, you can purchase an adapter that allows you to use those controls to run a new car stereo, so now you can have great sound and convenience too. Even cooler, if your new stereo has iPod controls, you can use your steering wheel controls to run your iPod.

PAC SWI-RC Steering Wheel Control Adapter

Written By Hector C, Georgia on Wednesday, September 02, 2015

Installed it on a Toyota Rav4 to maintain usage of the steering wheel controls. No matter how many times I did it, it did not program the correct buttons. The directions are not very clear.

Pros: Works on some of the controls

Cons: not easy to program. Pay real close attention and read the directions several times

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Im new to installing a steering wheel control adapter, but i don't think it should be this hard. Although the process is methodically complicated I didn't expect to stump both the experts at Crutchfield and PAC with abnormal feedback from the adapter. With several days of working with multiple tech advisors and a background in building projects with arduino and raspberry pie I did not expect this adapter to fall through the cracks and not be capable of adapting to a 2015 pioneer stereo purchased with the latest PAC adapter.

Pros: It is a thing you can purchase.

Cons: Functionally the adapter did not work. Specifically track up and down. The buttons on the steering wheel could be programed through the controller. the controller responded abnormally to tech support at Crutchfield and PAC who could not diagnose any errors. Several days and many hours later I am wishing I spent double for a better adapter or programmed one myself.

Nice product

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've always had good luck with PAC products. Once they are programmed, they work flawlessly.

With that said, learning the programming process can be a pain as it MUST be done in EXACTLY the right steps. Additionally, to ensure success, I advise programming with the engine running (to ensure that your battery is fully charged). The PAC module works by reading the voltage signal coming from the buttons. If you program with the engine off and the battery voltage drops (which it will do over time), the PAC module will get incorrect/skewed voltage signals. This will result in it "learning" the wrong commands and it won't work right when you start the engine (battery is full).

Pros: Excellent product that works exactly as it should.

Cons: Can be difficult/tedious to program (but it isn't hard).

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great instructions, pretty simple to make the connections and program. Ensure you get posi-connectors to simplify connections. Now my steering wheel controls work exactly the way I want!

Pros: Steering wheel controls work perfectly. Easy installation and programming.

Cons: None

Works Well

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Although there are myriad directions, and I had to call Crutchfield a few times, this thing works great. What I like best is that you can assign whatever function you want to a particular button. So, I have volume up and down, skip track forward and backward, and answer phone. Very cool. If you have a SONY radio you might have to go to the menu and set the steering wheel control to remote. Crutchfield can walk you through that.

Pros: works well, can assign different functions to buttons

Cons: complicated to set up, not sure if I have to reprogram if the battery ever gets disconnected/dies

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Was a bit confusing to install but I don't have too much experiences with wiring stuff. With help from Cruthfield and a bit of time I was able to get full use and am very happy with the steering wheel controls.

Pros: Works as intended and even more useful than stock steering wheel controls.

Cons: Difficult install

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

OK, you have to strip wires in the middle of the wire (be careful) and do some under the dash soldering. Hooked it up and programmed it (using the Mode function to select the source). It would not operate the source control from the steering wheel. Reprogrammed it to use the the Select function on the menu. No good. Still cannot control the source. There were only two choices for this function in the programming menu. All other functions work. Volume, Track/ Radio Station Up/Down are good.

Pros: Works most of the functions for my Prius.

Cons: Programming this is not fun. Works most of the steering wheel functions on my Prius but not all.

So far a good product

Written By citrus, Maine on Wednesday, August 05, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far this piece is working well for me. It was easy to program to my steering wheel. The only issue I had was with the wiring, but that was me misreading the instructions. I contacted the support team for this product and quickly realized my mistake. After I corrected the wiring, it took only a couple minutes to program the device properly.

Nice feature for vehicles with steering wheel radio controls.

Pros: Nice, easy to follow, step by step instructions.

Cons: Not all features on the steering wheel were programmable with this unit. Should include quick connect wire splices.

Works As Advertised & Beyond

Written By Black_Coffee, Maryland on Sunday, August 02, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am going to give this a five. I went to the website and printed out the vehicle specific instructions for install. Everything worked as advertised. This basically senses a button push and transforms it into a command for the receiver.

Considerations: I have both steering wheel and rear remote controls. The instructions only allow programming for one option. Rear required different program code from front so both could not be used. Since there is only one radio input, you can't get two and combine. An option to accept two remote inputs would have been nice. You can also change button applications. I had a memorize button on the steering wheel which I hardly ever use, following the program sequence I assigned it to the hands free phone and can now call up the phone from the steering wheel.

Pros: Wire length good and website vehicle specific instruction help with install. Recommend mounting where you can gain access to program button after install without removing trim or behind glove box.

Cons: Only one remote input. Also, no adaptor plug for installation. I had a third plug (OEM on vehicle) that only needed a female connector with pigtails to make the installation the same quality you get from Crutchfield. Had to cut the wire from the back of the plug and splice into unit. No big deal, but would have liked a connector.

Great but not perfect

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is another product that really made me glad I shopped through Crutchfield. Looking at the manufacturer's instructions made me want to throw up. But Crutchfield already did most of the complicated work for me, and there were several wires I didn't even needed, so reading Crutchfield's instructions made me realize installation wasn't going to be that difficult. It was just a few solder connections and I was done. Programming it to my steering wheel was pretty straightforward as well, especially since my car doesn't have a million buttons on it. It works as it's supposed to and I'm glad I bought it, but my only complaint is that there is a brief delay for me when pressing buttons. Adjusting the volume from the steering wheel takes about half a second to register the command, and skipping tracks takes 2-3 seconds after I pushed the button to actually register the command. Thus I give it 4/5.

Pros: Gets the job done, easy to install, easy to program, straightforward if you have the Crutchfield instructions

Cons: Delay between button push and registering of command

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Was glade that I was able to keep my steering wheel controls. I am pleased with Crutchfield for hooking me with the correct adapter

Pros: Able to keep both hands on steering wheel and eyes on the road while changing radio stations or songs on any of the stereo's inputs

Cons: Hard to figure how to splice, first timer, but all it took was a phone call to Crutchfield support and they guided me through the correct procedure

Vague instructions

Written By Rick, Michigan on Friday, July 31, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

In hind-site I would have saved the extra money on this, I probably will end up not installing it on the 2002 Honda van that my son drives. All of the instructions that I have gotten from Crutchfield in the past are very well done and clearly written.

This additional feature is a little cloudy as to which wire on the harness you are to connect to, the pin on the adapter is open and the wire color on the factory side does not match up with the wire color either.

Pros: Don't know since I decided not to take a chance on messing things up by splicing a wrong wire.

Cons: If they the manufacturer of this device would take a cue from the Crutchfield directions it would have been an easy install.

Works, but some problems

Written By ohiogeorge, Avon, Ohio on Monday, July 27, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Small problem with wiring, almost spliced into wrong factory wiring, but Crutchfield support easily guided me to the correct area. Programming was more difficult than I expected. Timing on pressing the programming buttons is very crucial. If your timing is off, your steering wheel controls are off. In order to reprogram you need to do the entire program all over again. It took me quite a few trys to get it almost correct. I got my volume controls and mode controls to work, but my forward and reverse control buttons are not working. I was satisfied with that and did not want to try programming again and possibly lose what I already got correct.

Pros: Relatively easy installation. Happy to have my major steering controls working

Cons: Programming a little more difficult than expected. Might be easier if two people were involved.

Works for 1998 Grand Cherokee

Written By Keith, Florida on Monday, July 20, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Worked great! Although the Crutchfield website said it was not compatible with my vehicle, the PAC website showed that it was. I had to use the programming instructions for "All Other Vehicles" under Jeep for 1998 instead of specifically Grand Cherokee, but it works great!

Pros: Functions exactly as advertised.

Cons: None.

Pretty good

Written By TexasLynn, Texas on Sunday, July 12, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Instructions were decipherable, and after a few missteps in programming which required starting again, it works. Unfortunately, hubby accidentally tapped the programming button while installing the unit (after I programmed it), which then erased all the commands. This required removing the newly-installed head unit again, soldering a longer wire onto the module so I could SEE it while my fingers danced across steering wheel buttons in a particular order within a specified number of seconds, and then reinstalling everything again. Overall, would say I'm pleased, but the steering wheel controls don't work "exactly" like they did with the OEM radio. The "up" and "down" buttons used to step through whatever radio stations were programmed into the buttons on the head unit; now they just "scroll" through radio stations, without regard to what is programmed. Oh well, I can still tap the buttons on the front of the radio easily enough. Bottom line: Good enough that I would recommend, with the caveat that it may not work EXACTLY like it did prior to head unit replacement. Programming button placement is difficult to use for programming, but apparently extremely easy to inadvertently push while trying to secure it inside the dashboard. It would have been very helpful if the wiring had been just a little bit longer, to allow easier access for "reprogramming." You might need it. :)

Pros: Works, beats the heck out of "dead" steering wheel controls.

Cons: May not exactly duplicate prior actions of buttons on steering wheel; we found that wiring attached to module needed to be a foot or two longer.

PAC SWI-RC Steering Wheel Control Adapter

Written By Anonymous, Austin, TX on Wednesday, July 01, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It took me a while to figure it out how to connect the cables for my car (Suzuki Grand Vitara 2006). Connectivity varies a lot depending on your car and model and year built. They have pretty extensive list of cars and how to setup, but it was a bit confusing for me. The pre-configuration did not work for my car (however, I might have powered connected at the beginning using the wrong code setup, which might have messed up the programming for the wheel controls). I had to re-program the buttons, which it works fine, although sometimes (very few times) does not respond. It could be because of a loosen cable connection or I need to re-program the buttons correctly.

Gets The Job Done With Additional Support

Written By Kkoppy, Missouri on Wednesday, July 01, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The installation instructions as related to the wiring are simple but the programming instructions are terrible. Contained within the box are pages and pages of indecipherable information for various vehicles. I went to the online site and after step seven, the instructions lack sensible clarity and left me gnashing my teeth. The instructions online are different than the instructions contained in the box so I called Crutchfield for support. I received the help I needed and everything is working correctly. The solution was very simple but the instructions led me no where near the final resolution. Thank you Crutchfield, I went from significant frustration to complete satisfaction.

Pros: Works great and as hoped.

Cons: The programing instructions are much more difficult and confusing than necessary. A simple rewrite by the manufacturer could easily fix the problem.

Pros and Cons

Written By Paul, Montana on Tuesday, June 30, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The elephant in the room that we need to talk about is programming this controller. That can be a bit of a pain in the rear and try your patience while wishing you had opposable thumbs on your feet to get the job done. The first time did not go well for me because I was trying to double assign buttons to the thing. Yeah, it does not like that. So programming it.... well, that can be a bit of a pain.

The upside is that it is programmable so you can program different functions for the steering wheel buttons. Really, once you figure out how to program the module it is not that big of a deal to get it going. The thing I learned.... make sure YOU SET THE VEHICLE program correctly. You will want to throw thing out the window. Instead of breaking something I just put it away and went to bed. The next morning I realized I forgot to turn over the page where it tells you to program the vehicle.... duh! Now, it works like a champ.

Pros: You can program it to use the steering wheel buttons as you desire.

Cons: You have to program it and splice wires while standing on your head.... okay not that bad, but it feels like it at times.

Once figured out wiring and programming works very good!

At first, item and wiring looks intimidating, but once instructions are followed step by step, no problem. Takes patience and time plus the ability to have an assistant help with the instructions so you keep track of where you are, especially with the programming of the functions.

Pros: Keeping the steering wheel controls is great. Once helped via email from Crutchfield for detailed instructions, wiring is simplified.

Cons: Lots of splicing and technical knowledge necessary.

Works, but complicated install

Written By Morsk, California on Thursday, June 25, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It works, but my Nissan required resistors which for one weren't labeled so I had to discern color bands (is that a black or a blue?), then the instructions said to "stick resistor into connector". Well that doesn't hold, so I had to cut off the factory connector and solder the resistor in place. If things are that complicated then a Nissan wiring harness should have been made available. Programming the device was clunky, but in the end it worked.

Pros: It works and is reasonably priced.

Cons: Having to sort through a packet of resistors and then solder them in place is a bit much. Had I known what I was getting into I would have abandoned the steering wheel controls.

Cake install. Instructions easily laid out for people if they've never installed one before. Had an awkward year of vehicle. Called manufacturer and they told me in my year only was a while a different color. All years prior and after were wire as listed in instructions.

Pros: Retains most (selectable) steering wheel controls.

Cons: Dumb auto manufacturer changed wire color for one year. Must have been a drought on red with black wire insulation. Wasn't a problem on the SWI-RC though.

Great Product

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this for my 2012 Lancer Gt, head unit was the Pioneer FH-X720BT easy to install. Instructions was easy to follow just needed to plug in 5 wires, 2 of them plug is to factory wires the rest was ground and pluged in back of radio. Controls works good no problem setting up controls to work like factory. Would recommend this.

Poor performance
