Installation Note: Some newer vehicles require a special interface for this installation. Click here to see if you need an interface to install the SWI-RC adapter in your vehicle. If you see one, add it to your cart along with this adapter.

You want to install an aftermarket stereo in your vehicle, but you hate to give up the convenience of your factory steering wheel radio controls? No problem. PAC's SWI-RC adapter allows you to use the steering wheel audio controls in a wide variety of vehicles to command select radios from Alpine, Clarion, Dual, Jensen, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer, and Sony.

Installation is straightforward — connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and your stereo, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. The direct connection to the stereo eliminates the need for an infrared emitter, allowing the interface to function even in bright sunlight. Step-by-step LED confirmation makes programming easy. Once connected, the SWI-RC's failsafe memory will learn up to 12 stereo functions, retaining them even if battery power is interrupted. Dimensions: 2"W x 7/8"H x 2-7/8"D. Warranty: 1 year.

Important Note: On some vehicles, you may need a voltmeter to locate the correct wires to connect to the SWI-RC. If you have no car audio installation experience, you should consider professional installation. The SWI-RC works with most Alpine, Clarion, Dual, Jensen, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer, and Sony stereos that have a wired remote control input port or a dedicated steering wheel input, but please call or email us to confirm compatibility with your radio.

Wiring Advisory: You'll usually have to tap into one to three wires in your vehicle at the radio location to connect this interface. If you're using a PAC OEM integration adapter to connect your new car stereo to your vehicle, then it most likely will have a prewired connector for this PAC steering wheel audio control adapter. In these cases, no additional wiring in required. PAC does provide custom wiring instructions for all confirmed compatible vehicles on their website.

What does a steering wheel audio control adapter do?

Many people aren't thrilled with the sound of their car's factory radio, but don't want to replace it because they'll lose those convenient audio controls on the steering wheel. For most vehicles, you can purchase an adapter that allows you to use those controls to run a new car stereo, so now you can have great sound and convenience too. Even cooler, if your new stereo has iPod controls, you can use your steering wheel controls to run your iPod.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

could be a little easier to program but iv never used one before and i got it to work myself i refuse to pay a "professional" to do my car audio, works great

Works well; instructions lacking

Written By Scott, Montana on Monday, May 18, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

In the end, all the steering wheel controls on my 2011 Camry work as they should, but the instructions are not awesome. I looked through them for a bit and felt a little unsure. Figured I'd call customer support for some input. Then I got impatient and decided to plow ahead. After a thorough re-read (about the 5th pass through the instructions), I finally realized what they were trying to say. I think it's down to wording, so your mileage may vary...

Pros: Works very well

Cons: Instructions are not very clear.

Actually does work!

After being very skeptical and doing my homework on install and programming I actually got the thing working! Took two tries. Now I love it but be ready for a bit of a clunky install. You try making something work in ANY vehicle lol. You can do it!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It takes a while to get setup. I installed it in a 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee, which was hard to find directions for. I ended up calling Crutchfield customer service and they were able to tell me which clock spring wire to cut in the steering column, and which wire on the PAC adapter to use. Other than that it's pretty easy. It's a universal product for the most part but the fact they have customer service on saturdays but only for dealers was frustrating. It does work great though.

Pros: Retain factory steering wheel radio controls Versatile

Cons: Difficult to install Instructions need improvement.

Great way to be sure you can keep the steering wheel controls in your car. Had a little trouble with installation and called customer support. They were able to easily explain my issue to me and how to fix it. Great service.

Cons: Set up is a little confusing at first, but becomes easy after some time looking at it

Perfect integration with Toyota steering wheel controls.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this on my 2007 Toyota Sequoia. I have the audio steering wheel controls only (without the phone controls). It took a little searching on Google to figure out how to configure and wire-up the interface correctly. Directions were lacking a bit. However, it integrated perfectly with my OEM Toyota steering wheel controls.

Pros: Works perfectly with Toyota steering wheel controls.

Cons: Documentation.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works as stated. A little apprehensive in cutting into the factory wiring but the photos and instructions from tech support eased those fears. Programming was more of a challenge. You need to follow the steps precisely. If you go out of sequence for each function you need to start over again though that is easy enough. I only needed 5 of the 12 functions and forgot a couple of times to program them out. Other than that a great item.

Pros: Well designed and functions correctly.

Cons: Programming could be better explained though I am not a tech wiz.

Easier said than done...

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Quick Shipping. Product came with about 10 pages of paper directions and had to go online for more (it was required). After hours of attempts to understand directions and program, we tried online. Directions from products company were different on the online video we found. Still no luck. Finally called Crutchfield and got a cpl of pointers. Still no luck. Finally gave up.

Pros: Unknown. Not installed.

Cons: Confusing, contradicting directions. Advised by staff product can't be plugged in to unit while programming. Def a good tip but know where in directions!

Works well.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The installation went OK, with several mistakes in the instructions. After 2 hours of trying to follow the programming instructions I gave up and put the dashboard back together. We can't use the steering wheel buttons at all.

Both the online and the printed installation instructions refer to "wires" in one area, and "wire" in another although both have the same color description. Both sets of instructions seemed to follow the same basic steps.

The printed and online programming instructions differed greatly. One advises to turn the key to ignition, and the other advises to start the car. But neither procedure would program the unit. When attempting to program the buttons the unit flashes the "completion" sequence on the LED when I attempted to program the first button. I was unable to find any customer support from the manufacturer in the printed documents (other than "reprogram the unit"), or online. I emailed Crutchfield about the problem hoping for a "we're familiar with it, here's the proper instructions", or some other quick fix that didn't require a one-step-at-a-time-discussion, but the response was to call them. Since I work during the week, I'll try to set aside a few hours one weekend, rip the dashboard apart, and call Crutchfield.

Pros: None

Cons: It won't program.

Does what its suppose to do, kind of. You will probably loose some button control you had before

Pros: Gives you back some of your steering wheel controls.

Cons: In the instructions, when it comes to part to program buttons. I read it as push reset to clear all previous commands and wait for light to go out and come back on. What it really means is push reset, when light comes on start programing procedure. Other than that instr. are pretty good.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works pretty well but I needed to do some "special stuff" to it for install. I opened it up and removed the cable with the 1/8" plug on it. That would not be good floating around behind the dash. I had to manually program the functions even with the correct codes but it only took about 1 min or so at most.

Pros: Worked as needed once programmed and installed

Cons: Output cable with connector should be removable if not needed.

The instructions were pretty straight forward. The instructions for my particular application were somewhat unclear due to wire color discrepancies furnished with the unit. Pros: Worked as promised. Kept full factory function of steering wheel controls.

Cons: Wiring and programming instructions are somewhat difficult.

Works Great with Harley Davidson

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit works great on my 2013 Street Glide with my new Kenwood head unit. It maintained all factory functionality and added a little more. I was a little intimidated about having to wire this up myself but with the Scosche harness provided with the new head unit it was a breeze. It seemed that you had to splice and wire in resistors to many different pins but the harness comes with all that already done for you. It wasn't 100% clear that that was the case but it was very welcomed when I realized it. There was no additional splicing required at the harness, only one wire on the handle bar controls needed to be clipped and grounded under the faring and it was Very easy to do. Just connect one of the control wires (depends on what type of unit you have as to which is used) to your head unit, then simply plug it in to the Scosche harness and start programming. Programming is also much easier than it may seem in the directions. I had no problems getting it to work and after several weeks its still going strong!

Pros: works flawless, very easy to install

Cons: Online Installation instructions make it seem more complicated than it is, Crutchfield could do a better job informing that no splicing with resistors is required

Not 2011 Honda Accord SE Compatible

Written By S Caesar, Michigan on Thursday, April 16, 2015

I had a professional installer install this piece for me in my 2011 Honda Accord SE and it didn't work at all. He also kept saying that it works really well for GM vehicles, but has so much trouble with any other cars. It just didn't work. Luckily, he ordered an Axis steering wheel control adapter and installed that in its place and it works perfectly and easily.

works great once all said and done. directions are confusing and need to be updated by manufacturer. they said i had to add resistors to the wiring -- but the resistors are already wired in and covered by shrink tubing straight out of the box. programming directions leave a little clarification out, but you can figure out along the way.

Pros: works great

Cons: confusing directions

Good Product, Poor Instructions PAC-SWI-RC

Written By Anonymous, Maryland on Wednesday, April 08, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The product works good but does not have all the same functions that my factory 2007 Mazda 3 steering wheel control have. You can program the up and down arrows to control tracks on CD's/USB or change radio stations but not both. There is an ever so slight delay between pressing the controls on the steering wheel and getting a response on the head unit.

The instructions contradict themselves, one sentence would say "black wires" then the next would say "black wire," for making the connections, confusing to say the least. Once again the tech support from Crutchfield saved the day and knew exactly what I was talking about and offered seamless instruction.

Pros: decent steering wheel controls over head unit functions

Cons: instructions were not clear

PAC SWI-RC Steering Wheel Control

Written By Frederick, West Virginia on Monday, April 06, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As far as function goes it works as described but the installation and programming of the device was a little lacking in explanation. It tells you what wires to connect up for the particular application but it doesn't tell you what to do with the unused wires. i decided to cut them off and tape the ends to save space and get them out of the way.

Pros: Lets you use the factory steering wheel controls with a new head unit.

Cons: could use more detailed installation instructions and explain that there is unused wires and what to do with them.

Neat product, difficult instructions

Written By nothanks, The Moon on Sunday, April 05, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This device works quite nicely once it is setup. Unfortunately, the directions are a bit cryptic and it can prove to be a bit challenging. Call tech support sooner rather than later - they were quite helpful. Be sure to have your volt meter handy.

Pros: You can map the steering wheel button to basically whatever you want on the stereo. This proves GREAT for creating your own "answer" button for bluetooth equipped radios in older cars. I would buy it for my next install now that I am familiar with the setup.

Cons: The instructions had absolutely NO idea what they were talking about even though my 2004 Chrysler Sebring convertible is reportedly supported. The wiring info and diagrams provided were complete rubbish. (give tech support an A+ on helping figure it out) Device not able to attention the "call" button for voice command on headunits that integrate with Siri. That was disappointing - if they correct this problem, the aftermarket stereo installations will be much nicer

confusing documentation

Written By T, Arizona on Thursday, April 02, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The instructions are very confusing. they do not specify what cable connector they are refering to. took some guess work and lots of google to get it hooked up. It did not work after I hooked it up and I attempted to contact the manufacturer several times. They never replied. Called Crutchfield and they helped me get it working in 5 minutes. FYI, the instructions are not clear but to get it to work you need to go thru the manual programming after you program it for the radio you have.

Pros: Works as advertised. Crutchfield customer support saved the day.

Cons: Horrible documentation, no customer support from PAC.

Works great - just as advertised!

Written By JimL, Massachusetts on Wednesday, April 01, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This item works perfectly in my Nissan Altima with a Pioneer radio I purchased from Crutchfield. It takes a little extra effort to install - tapping into factory radio wiring harness and carefully programming the correct functions into the radio. In my case, I had to "skip" programming the Preset +/- functions to match the factory radio control behavior with my new Pioneer. Instead I only programmed the Track Up/Down functions and - strangely enough - that allows me to navigate radio presets AND track up/down with CDs, USB-attached iPod, Pandora via Bluetooth, etc. Couldn't be happier after I figured that out!

Pros: Exhaustive & thorough documentation available from Crutchfield & PAC's web site - details available for your specific make/model/year. Small enough to tuck away in the dash when installing the radio. Unit preserves programmed settings even if battery power is cut - hopefully that means this means its safe to hide this out-of-reach in the dash once it's successfully programmed

Cons: You need to review several sets of documents & double-check instructions carefully to determine which wires are used and where they are connected before installation. Programming is tedious and time sensitive - if you pause too long unit "times out" and you need to reprogram the unit from scratch.

Works as advertised

Written By David T., Kentucky on Tuesday, March 31, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

works as advertised-be sure to have a clear mind when programming as instructions can be confusing

Pros: once it's configured-all my steering wheel control funtions work as before w/ factory sound system-my head-unit has Ipod input and you can use your scan-seek to go up or down on playlist-depending on wheel functions, you can tailor your controls for other funtions of head-unit

Cons: really tricky to get it set up-instructions are a little confusing but patience and a little trail and error will get you there. Don't complete head-unit and adapter unit install until you have it dialed in. Would give 5 stars if it wasn't so tricky to dial in.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Not the easiest of installs, but not terrible either. Make sure you read the instructions carefully. Others have said that the instructions are terrible, however I found them to be adequate as long as you made sure to follow everything closely. Wiring it is the more difficult part; I found programming it to be pretty simple. It works very well paired up with my Pioneer AVH-170 DVD receiver. I think it's a good value for the price. 4 stars instead of 5 because the instructions could be laid out better for someone who has less experience installing car audio equipment.

Pros: Works well. All steering wheel functions work flawlessly with my new head unit. Easy to program. Pretty easy to wire.

Cons: Instructions could be more clear.

Frustrating install, but works as advertised

Written By Will, Bay Area, CA on Thursday, February 05, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Read all the instructions before starting: Select your stereo brand using the little numbered dial on the side, then wire it according the installation note sheet. I installed in a 2001 Infiniti QX4 (Same as Nissan Pathfinder LE) with the factory Bose speakers, using a JVC KD-AR959BS head unit. Using this head unit you set the SWI-RC selector to "2". The notes for this car say to wire resistors (<2K ohm) inline from the factory steering wheel controls into the white wire. The resistor values are in the instructions, so read carefully. Things to avoid: It says to wire everything to the white wire, but I saw the white/red and the white/black were connected to the white wire so I wired some controls to those wires. DO NOT DO THIS, the white/red and white/black already have resistors wired inline and the result will be that some of your buttons will have similar resistance values and now your volume up key and track down key will both only make the volume go up. Avoid this by connecting only to the white wire. It says to use resistors <2K ohm, but it kept confusing the control I had wired with the 47ohm with the control wired to the 100ohm. I swapped out the 47ohm with a 3900ohm resistor and everything worked. It says to solder the connections, but when testing just tape the connections and solder afterwards. I had to undo lots of solder connections since the instructions were wrong and I made a couple mistakes.

It finally works now as advertised after 4 hours!

Pros: Works as intended with little delay between button press and response. Easy to program once installed.

Cons: Instructions not entirely accurate or clear for my install. Have to solder connections to factory harness. Similar resistor values should be avoided since the system cannot differentiate and treats them as the same button.

Steering Wheel Control 2004 Jeep G Cherokee

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Once installed the unit works perfectly, I only gave it 4 stars as the instructions were a little fuzzy to me, but quickly cleared up by a call to Crutchfield. The biggest installation hassle was getting the control wire from the steering wheel to the CD compartment, but that would be vehicle dependent.

Pros: Works perfectly once installed.

Cons: Takes up a bit of space behind the CD Player, so combined with the aftermarket harness for the CD player it takes a bit of juggling to the CD re-installed.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered the PAC SWI-RC Steering Wheel Control Adapter to install along with the Kenwood DDX371 in a 2008 Toyota Sienna. Connecting all the wires were simple enough once you figured out what the directions were actually saying. Once all the wires were connected properly, programming the adapter took about 3 tries because the directions can be a bit confusing. After programming the 3rd time, it didn't work, so I thought it wasn't compatible. I turned OFF the DVD receiver thinking about taking out the steering wheel control adapter for a few minutes, but then I turned it back ON and the steering wheel controls proceeded to work. I've now had it installed for about 4 months now and it is still going strong. There are only 5 buttons on the Sienna's stereo steering wheel control (VOLUME UP, VOLUME DOWN, BACK, FORWARD & SOURCE) and they all work as programmed. The installation and programming instructions are key to making this work and it might take some careful considerations of those instructions to get it to work and it has worked for me.

Pros: works as advertised, small footprint, long wires

Cons: not so straight forward instructions (but now that I think about it, it is as straight forward as they can get)

PAC SWI- RC Steering Wheel Control Adapter

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed on 2001 BMW 525i - Don't bother with the instructions that came with the package. Go on line and get the specific instruction for your vehicle. Everything is working fine so far.

Pros: You can program your steering wheel controls to your specific function

Cons: Installation instructions are very poorly written. It took me 5 tries to have it programed correctly. Timing is essential during programming - Something the instruction failed to mention.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Upon unpacking the PAC-SWI-RC, I was a bit intimidated, but the website has videos that walk you through installation and programming. I suggest going to this website and at least printing out and reading through the instructions for your specific vehicle prior to installing.

The product works fantastic and seamlessly fused my Ford Explorer and Kenwood DDX492 together.

Pros: Great product to integrate the safety of steering wheel controls in aftermarket stereos.

Cons: Instructions can seem daunting at first. Go to the website and print them out for your specific vehicle.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

PAC SWI-RC does what it says. I installed a new stereo in a 2011 Corolla and needed an adapter to work the steering wheel controls. This unit is installed and working perfectly. I am by no means an expert installer, this was my first in about 15 years. If you go to the pac website and enter your vehicle to get the specific instructions, it is doable for the novice. You have to clip the factory head unit plug wires from the factory plug to connect the interface. My new head unit had a wire that said "steering wheel control", so that was easy. Takes a little patience to program, but not too bad.

Pros: works great after proper install

Cons: instructions...instructions

Very poor instructions

Thoroughly read the instructions and tried to prepare the harness before replacing the factory radio. When I got to the radio of the 02 Acura TL the instruction were incomplete and the unit could not be installed. Customer service was not available over the weekend to help. Everything else I purchased (speakers, speaker harnesses and mounts, stereo and stereo harness) worked and fit great.

This product did exactly what I needed it to. Retain the factory steering wheel controls in a 2007 Scion TC with a Pioneer AVH-X3600BHS. Followed the step by step programming instructions. Had to do it twice because the first time I tried to program the same button for more than one function but it will not do that so I reprogrammed it and it worked properly

Pros: Works as advertised Cheaper than the Axxess model

Cons: Programming instructions may be confusing for some people.

Pros: Reprogram your steering wheel controls to what works for you.

Cons: Instructions can be tricky. Be sure to look up your vehicle from the website.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

While the adapter has a lot of wires it was an easy install thanks to Crutchfield's detail and the actual adapter company's detailed instructions!

Pros: It actually works as intended!

Cons: You still need to buy the vehicle specific harness for your aftermarket radio.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product seems complicated at first, but became more clear when I downloaded the specific instructions for my vehicle (2011 Prius). It takes some study of the instructions before trying to set it up. You need to sort out the wires to use and understand the programming procedure. It has to be programmed after connecting it into the car wiring, so is a bit awkward. I went through the procedure several times and thought I was doing it right, but there was no response from the radio when I pressed a button on the steering wheel. When I was about to give up, I tried setting the radio REMOTE to ON, and it all worked. Since I had not purchased the optional hand-held remote, I did not realize that I had to set up the radio this way. All was good after that.

Pros: Clever universal interface device. Specific instructions are available online. Worked as advertised after all was done.

Cons: Complex and awkward to set it up. Nothing directed me to program my radio to ON for REMOTE controller (this is more a Kenwood issue).

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit works great in our 2009 Ford Fusion and we were able to keep all of the steering wheel controls for volume, search and media selection. We are very happy with this product. Product was used with a Pioneer FH-X700BT stereo. I can understand where this product may have some challenges with different head units and vehicles, but for the Fusion and Pioneer it simply works as it was supposed to!

Pros: Works great, just like the factory stereo functions.

Cons: None

Not quite....

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Doesn't work as advertised for me. I put this in my Explorer with a new JVC receiver and the controls don't exactly match up.

Pros: Some functions work.

Cons: Volume up on steering wheel makes the volume go down. Volume down on steering wheel is now mute. Memory recall on steering wheel is now seek. The music (mode) control on the steering wheel works fine.
