Installation Note: Some newer vehicles require a special interface for this installation. Click here to see if you need an interface to install the SWI-RC adapter in your vehicle. If you see one, add it to your cart along with this adapter.
You want to install an aftermarket stereo in your vehicle, but you hate to give up the convenience of your factory steering wheel radio controls? No problem. PAC's SWI-RC adapter allows you to use the steering wheel audio controls in a wide variety of vehicles to command select radios from Alpine, Clarion, Dual, Jensen, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer, and Sony.
Installation is straightforward — connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and your stereo, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. The direct connection to the stereo eliminates the need for an infrared emitter, allowing the interface to function even in bright sunlight. Step-by-step LED confirmation makes programming easy. Once connected, the SWI-RC's failsafe memory will learn up to 12 stereo functions, retaining them even if battery power is interrupted. Dimensions: 2"W x 7/8"H x 2-7/8"D. Warranty: 1 year.
Important Note: On some vehicles, you may need a voltmeter to locate the correct wires to connect to the SWI-RC. If you have no car audio installation experience, you should consider professional installation. The SWI-RC works with most Alpine, Clarion, Dual, Jensen, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer, and Sony stereos that have a wired remote control input port or a dedicated steering wheel input, but please call or email us to confirm compatibility with your radio.
Wiring Advisory: You'll usually have to tap into one to three wires in your vehicle at the radio location to connect this interface. If you're using a PAC OEM integration adapter to connect your new car stereo to your vehicle, then it most likely will have a prewired connector for this PAC steering wheel audio control adapter. In these cases, no additional wiring in required. PAC does provide custom wiring instructions for all confirmed compatible vehicles on their website.
Works, had to watch an online video to program
Pros: Light compact!
Crutchfield treated me well while ordering and needing a little extra help. I followed the instructions (called once and then felt like a dope because the answer to my question was obvious) and it works perfectly. I have six steering wheel button controls and I was able to assign them with any of the available commands. Eventually, I assigned them the factory labeled options because they seemed to be the most useful. I guess Mercury did a little research before designing it. Would definitely recommend this product.
Pros: Great company and great products. Everything works as described and I installed it myself (I'm handy, but no professional).
Spend the extra cash and get the Axxess ASWC-1 Steering Wheel Control Adapter
Cons: wouldn't program. lousy instructions. if you call PAC for tech support on a Saturday, they will only talk to Dealers. Pffft.
I never was able to get this to work well. It requires splicing into the factory harness underneath the steering wheel, fishing wires through to the radio, then programing. I got the wireing part done, but the programing is difficult to do, and then I was able to progam was volume change and maybe station preset up. 3 of the 6 buttons on my Dash are not compatible with this unit. The Voice Call, Source selection and the preset Down Button on my BMW 325I factory steering column will not work with this unit. I called the PAC company, and the Tech support guy said that those buttons will not work with this unit, and he suggested another unit. I will be sending this back
Cons: hard to program, limited useage
Great product to keep my steering wheel controls
Pros: Easy to install and program
Works perfectly. With being used to using the steering wheel controls for the factory head unit, I knew that I would instinctively reach for those controls first. The added cost was well with the convenience of adjusting the volume +\-, muting the volume, or changing the source without taking my eyes off of the road.
Pros: Excellent value; provides convenience and safety while driving.
Installed along with the Pioneer AVHZX3800BHS. very easy install, very small& easy to tuck behind head unit.
Pros: Easy install, small size
Cons: Programing took a while without programmer but everything included to find perameters. Couple functions didn't work but no big deal.
After installing this, and programming it, and rechecking that I wired everything correct, not all of the steering wheel buttons worked. And only gave me a few functions. The programming process to set this thing up is long and confusing. I ended up using an interface from a previous install. The Axxess ASWC-1 worked perfectly on multiple vehicles, with the proper harness, and Automatically programs itself to the car and radio.
Pros: Easy wiring, multiple vehicle options
Cons: Has To Be Programmed. Doesn't always work.
It works like it was made to, I just wish I didn't have to cut into the factory wiring harness in order for it to work
Pros: You get to keep your steering wheel controls!
Cons: You HAVE to cut into the factory wiring harness for this to work. Lots of other useless wires attached that aren't used aswell.
Programming this is a pain
Was a little overwhelmed to say the least after I hooked the interface up a reviewed the program directions, kinda difficult but tech support walked me through it and was more than pleased with the results. My truck has steering wheel controls that I never used and with this unit being programable I was able to utilize them for my new HU and phone functions!! Works great!!
Pros: Ability to program any function you want
Cons: A little confusing programming at first
I installed this unit along with a new Pioneer receiver and wiring adapter, and I think trying to figure out exactly how to install the PAC SWI-RC took me longer than all the rest of the installation process put together. Installation instructions were just terrible; English is obviously not the primary language of whoever wrote them. After finally figuring out what to do (thank to several internet forums, but certainly no thanks to the manufacturer's website), I realized that those instructions could have been made clear with just a little bit of effort. What a shame. The installation itself was not too difficult, but next time I would gladly pay more for a unit with a vehicle-specific harness adapter rather than having to splice into the wires on the vehicle harness. Programming instructions were much clearer (though still not especially well written). Programming for my vehicle was pretty easy, and my steering wheel controls worked perfectly the first time. This is the only reason I'm giving the PAC SWI-RC 2 stars instead of 1.
Pros: It works
Cons: Terrible installation instructionsCrutchfield response on April 5, 2016 Whenever you encounter a problem with anything you purchase from Crutchfield, especially a situation like this, please contact our customer service or tech support teams right away. Impossible install three different sets of directions. Decided not to install so nothing gets fried.
Pros: Great idea
Cons: Difficult installCrutchfield response on April 5, 2016 Once we saw this review, our Tech Support team reached out to help the customer. We'll either help him get the adapter working the way it should, or help him return it for an exchange or refund.
The manual that comes with the unit is quite confusing and cumbersome. I think they try to include all possible info related on the planet compared to whats just needed for your car. I'm still not sure. Customer Service at PAC is awful, they just kept sending me to links that had the same info as the printed material I already have. Would not answer any specific questions I have in emails. Now I'm stuck.
Pros: Nothing yet.
Cons: Confusing documentation, poor customer service.Crutchfield response on April 4, 2016 We forwarded this review to our Technical Support team for follow-up. Lifetime tech support comes with every Crutchfield purchase.
My car has a separate Bluetooth, and steering commands go through it. It took a while to figure out how to get it to work. The help desk got me through it, but the instructions (so many similar models) were confusing.
Pros: Functions as advertised
Cons: Confusing directions.
This adapter allowed my fiancé to keep her steering wheel controls in her Honda CRV. The instructions you were print out from PAC's website were Extremely confusing when it comes to programming the actual functions of the steering wheel controls. In the end i was able to successfully program volume up / down, and i somehow added mute to the mode button. I wouldn't have purchased this but Crutchfield has an awesome discount deal when buying with a head unit.
Pros: kept volume up and down , mute , steering wheel functions. great deal from Crutchfield deck package.
Cons: very difficult to understand directions. i understand that splicing into the factory harness has to be done, would be nice if some kind of an adapter was available as there is very little room to splice into those wires behind the dash and harness.
Works exactly as the sale reps and mfg's online content says it does. My install instructions did not match exactly how my car was configured. Tech support from Crutchfield referred me to PAC tech sup for next tier sup. PAC tech sup. was very knowledgeable quickly resolved, what I was doing wrong.
Pros: easy to install, and *easy to program. provides plenty of configurable inputs. Compliments the stereo I purchased giving all of the steering wheel remote controls features. complete detailed documentation included.
Cons: programing part of the supplied documentation has some confusing content. Requires rereading several times to have clear understanding. Could probably be broken in to more steps. *had to call mfg, tech for clarification on programing procedure.
If you aren't an electrician or stereo installer, you have very little chance of making this work. Hopefully once I take it to a stereo shop it will function.
Works as described. Instructions were ok but not the clearest set I've used before.
Pros: I can use my steering wheel controls with my new stereo.
Cons: Took a few times to get things right. Almost called customer service which would have been a first for me.
I would wish I had other options to keep my steering wheel controls. The instructions are terrible. They tell you to use the white wire for install. The problem is, there is one white wire that splits into three wires, white, white/black, and white/red. Which one do you use? What do you do with the other two? Do you use the other two with enclosed resistors? Really expected better from Crutchfield.
Pros: None as of yet, still isn't working.
Cons: Complete garbage. Shop elsewhere.Crutchfield response on March 28, 2016 Whenever you encounter a problem with anything you purchase from Crutchfield, especially a situation like this, please contact our customer service or tech support teams right away. They can help you solve the problem and get the adapter installed and working. We forwarded this review to our Technical Support team for follow-up. This item is installed and it is working great. I found the instructions difficult. I almost gave up but ended up calling Crutchfield's technical department twice and they walked me through it. If I had bought this at a big box store with no technical service to help me out I would have given up.
Pros: Works as advertised. Crutchfield's technical department gets all the credit on this install.
Cons: Confusing instructions. Took multiple tries to get it programmed correctly.
A Little confusing but got it
Pros: Good to keep controls
Was a little worried about this install but it went easier than I thought. Had go through the progamming twice but I got it
Pros: Works Great Glad to have my hand controls
Cons: Directions a little foggy
DO NOT USE T-TAPS!! The wires that you are splicing into are small, and the the t-taps do not cut through the insulation well. I was using t-taps to avoid cutting the OEM harness wires, but I couldn't get the product to work, so I ended up just cutting the wires and using regular butt connectors. All that said, once I did that, the product worked flawlessly and I liked the way I could program the steering wheel buttons to do anything I wanted.
Pros: Programming flexibility
Cons: Not the simplest install, but read twice, cut once!
Easy to install using instructions from PAC. Great price and worked perfectly with my 2003 Lincoln town Car.
Much easier install then anticipated. Programming was a breeze.
Works great once you get it installed.
Pros: Everything on my stearin wheel works for the radio. Easy to install and program.
Cons: Was confusing at first how the program but once I figured it out, everything went quick and smooth.
Took me 3 sets of instructions, 3 calls to 3 different Crutchfield advisors, and finally a call to the manufacturer to get it hooked up. Instructions that came w/it are wrong. Got new ones from a Crutchfield tech but those were wrong, finally have rep from PAC tell me that diagram is wrong, so just trust him. Almost sent back to Crutchfield, but would have cost me $10 to return; almost went to best buy to finish installing for me, I finally got it and it actually works. Miracle. Lots of stress getting there though. Had to clip 2 wires in my car's harness b/c I have the nav; but didnt have to clip one in the navi harness even though instructions said I had to.
Pros: Works good once you get it hooked up, tied into the right wires, and then programmed.
Cons: Diagrams in instructions are wrong, make sure you call a Crutchfield tech or even the manufacturer before you clip the wrong wires in your car's factory harness
Everything worked but it wouldn't let me program the last 3 functions .
Pros: Easy to install( just read the instructions!), works fine.
Cons: Won't let me program the last 3 functions (mic, answer call, hang up)
allows my factory steering wheel controls to work as they should
Pros: allows factory installed steering wheel controls to work as they should
Cons: had to replace the first module due to a defect, but Crutchfield customer service was great
The controller works as it should, but the instructions are hard to follow.
Pros: Compact light unit
Cons: Directions are poor Wires attached that are not in the instructions
The downloaded website instructions don't match the included package instructions. The instructions that came with it specified one extra ground needed that the website and the support team missed. I programmed the thing as directed, and I still haven't managed to get my steering wheel controls to work. I'll need to remove the stereo and make another phone call I suppose. Nothing I have seen yet tells me how to skip a pre-programmed function if my vehicle doesn't have it. The website instructions (vehicle specific) will only guide me through a base model stereo change-out. That's not what I have.
Cons: Conflicting instructions, have yet to get this thing to work.Crutchfield response on March 8, 2016 Once we saw this review, our Tech Support team reached out to help the customer. We'll either help him get the receiver working the way it should, or help him return it for an exchange or refund.
Easy to install and easy to use. Make sure that you follow the directions. They are very clear. Works great!!!
Pros: Easy to use
Cons: Intimidated by the bag of resistors but I didn't use any anyway...
Device shows is programmed correctly with lights, but it doesn't work. Tried multiple times to reprogram and other options with no luck. Will not waste time on worrying about this item. Really enjoying the rest of the stereo system.
Pros: Reasonable to connect
Cons: Poor instructions for programming. No results in being able to correct and get it to work. I suspect it picky based on the type and age of vehicle you try to pair it with.Crutchfield response on March 7, 2016 We forwarded this review to our Technical Support team for follow-up. Lifetime tech support comes with every Crutchfield purchase.
Works as advertised.
Pros: Easy to install. Direction are great for install.
Cons: Pricey, but Crutchfield gave a big discount. Directions are confusing for programming the blue box. Result was to call crutchfield and have them walk me through it. Thanks....Guys.
Pros: Great product.
I've had to return over 60 of these because they simply don't take the programming. Have only had 8 work total. Complete junk. Buy an Axxess instead
This thing works great, and I love the fact that I can continue to use my steering wheel controls but it was a pain in the neck to get it programmed, I spent a good hour and it still isn't perfect, at least I got the important controls done.
Pros: Keeps your Steering wheel controls working right
Cons: Hard to get the program right.
Works great, no problems with my steering wheel controls (other than not having enough buttons :)) Ignore all the documentation that comes with it and use the auto-generated documentation off their website (Crutchfield also sends this link). Only used a fraction of the wires coming out of the unit, so the installation was easy. Programming takes a few tries and requires watching a tiny LED blink.
Pros: Works well
Cons: Quirky setup routine, but that's a one time event.
This is a good option for keeping your controls. However, instructions are all over the place, so it took me 2 different sets and some advice from a forum to get mine programmed correctly. It now functions great.
Pros: Works like it should
Cons: Instructions, programming
Worked as advertised. Was glad I could use my steering wheel audio controls with new reciever. Wiring looked intimidating but wasn't too bad.
Works just fine.
Pros: Fairly easy to install, thanks to the Crutchfield tech support team
Cons: Instructions pretty much suck.
disappointed in the steering wheel adaptor
Pros: they quickly gave me a refund (because they knew this was a bad product)
Cons: Could not get it to install. Installation instructions looked very difficult, then we would have to program each button on the steering column. When we called the tech support - the rep told us - "We should have got the other one that cost $10 more". I just picked the one that said it fit with my model car & stereo. I ended up skipping the install for this equipment and will just have to use the knob on the stereo.
I only rate this a couple stars because it works as advertised. The problem (and its big) is that it's missing a key part to make install workable. It expects you to permanently alter the car's side of the steering control interface. On the back of the factory stereo (2006 Toyota Camry) there are 4 parts that interface to the car: 1) Antenna, 2) Power molex connector, 3) Speaker/data molex connector, 4) Steering wheel interface molex connector. The adapter kit for the new head unit takes care of 2 and 3, and 1 is good as is. This leaves 4, the steering wheel interface. If you look at the photo of this item, you will note one pigtail set that terminates to a plastic plug housing. This plugs into the box that is part of this item. This means the un-terminated end of the pigtail is what must interface to the car. See the problem? You have to get these raw cables to interface with what is currently a molex connector (the car's steering wheel interface connector). Since I wasn't going to deal with the $10 I could get for my radio, I broke the factory radio's connector off the motherboard, and soldered the raw cables to the connector, forming my own adapter. Otherwise I would have had to cut off the molex on the car's interface, which is a huge no-go for me. What is needed is simply another pigtail specific to the car's steering control interface connector. I could wire its wires to the wires of this item and voila!
Pros: Works as advertised
Cons: Expects you to effectively damage the car's end of the install, making resale (going back to original stereo) a bit of an issue.
great little unit that will absolutely do the job it is made to do.
Pros: Works great, and once I had all the right instructions, it was a breeze to setup.
Cons: Really need to make sure you get all of the instructions - especially the ones that Crutchfield emails and the vehicle specific ones from the PAC website. Go slow and it is not a big deal.
Only partially functioning, so I am very disappointed. My initial gut after reading many reviews was to go with the more highly rated Axxess ASWC-1, but the sales person talked me out of that. Now I wish I had stuck with my gut feeling. After install and working with tech support they offered to swap the radio out for me, concluding that the PAC SWI-RC and my radio (a Sony model also from Crutchfield ordered together) were having some compatibility issues. I just didn't want to go through all of that, basically a gamble. So I have decided to live with it as is, but that is not a happy decision. The volume control on the steering wheel works fine. The channel up/down does NOT move thru preset channels but instead does a scan function. The mute button doesn't work at all. The mode button does different things based on the state of the radio. That's all I have on the steering wheel, just basic functions, disappointing that it couldn't get it right. The biggest disappointment is not being able to step thru the channel presets.
Pros: Volume control works.
Cons: Channel up/down does NOT move thru preset channels
2008 Honda Accord without factory Nav. The instructions are poorly written and fail to make a lot of sense. Had to call twice for clarification and it still did not work. Very vague with "connect chassis pin 6 to ground, it could be brown, yellow or orange". The factory harness has very little room for error and even using crimp splices then soldering it refused to work. Cut it out and will live without steering wheel controls, just not worth the headache and risk to the rest of the factory wiring. Money wasted.
Pros: None that I could find.
Cons: Poorly written instructions, not a lot to work with.
This part of the installation took the longest and had me thinking do I even need this piece. It still isn't right. The programing is suspect
Pros: If it worked right and easy to program those would be the pros
Cons: Programming instructions vague. It is still not right.Crutchfield response on March 1, 2016 Once we saw this review, our Tech Support team reached out to help the customer. We'll either help him get the adapter working the way it should, or help him return it for an exchange or refund.
This unit works great in maintaining the functionality of the steering wheel controls of my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the new Alpine receiver that I installed
Pros: The buttons on my steering wheel all still work and installing it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be.
Cons: Don't read the documentation that comes in the box. It will give you an anxiety attack. Visit their website. It will prompt you to enter information about your vehicle and the type of stereo you are installing. it will spit out customized install instructions that you can print. Took me about 3 programming attempts to get all of the buttons set up the way I wanted them. No fault of the device, just learning curve operator errors.
trial and error with the instruction
Downright terrible product. Went through instructions and videos and all and couldn't get this thing to work. I'm a pretty handy person as well. I've checked everything and followed all instructions to a T and still nothing. A friend tried to use one of these too and it didn't work for her either. I think this is a junk product that should not be sold! I'm going to try to get my money back.
Cons: Worthless overpriced junkCrutchfield response on February 23, 2016 Once we saw this review, our Tech Support team reached out to help the customer. We'll either help him get the adapter working the way it should, or help him return it for an exchange or refund.
If you want your steering wheel controls this product does exactly what's advertised.
Pros: Crutchfield support save the day
Cons: Instructions are a nightmare website marginally better
Piece of junk. Directions for installation are worthless. Luckily Crutchfield has good tech help to walk you through the wiring process over phone. Still does not work after installation.
Cons: Does not work and hard to install.
Giving three star not because the product doesn't work well because it does. The instructions, however, are Horrible! If you're an auto installer professional they're probably fine but for the average Joe they're not. The programming sequence is also tricky, instructions are better for this though could be better. The tricky thing is the speed at which you have to perform the programming. You have to wait for the light to come on press your steering wheel control button and hold for a second after it goes off all in a specific order. It took me a few tries but I did get it and the unit has performed excellently.
Pros: Works very well
Cons: Very bad instructions for the novice, so-so customer service for the consumer-some of the reps had a better attitude than others.
Installed into a 2004 Chevy Malibu Maxx. This product works exactly as you would expect, nothing more to it.
Pros: Control volume and seek functions from steering wheel of 2004 Chevy Malibu Maxx in an after-market stereo
Was easy to install no inconvinece
After 30 minutes starts cycling the stereo. Waste of money, had to disconnect it
Cons: Doesn't workCrutchfield response on February 15, 2016 Once we saw this review, our Tech Support team reached out to help the customer. We'll either help him get the adapter working the way it should, or help him return it for an exchange or refund.
The install was a bit overwhelming at first for a first timer but everything worked as it should per the intstructions. After a few uses though it didn't hold the programming right. I'm not sure if that's the unit or my car somehow but it's something to be aware of.
Pros: Instructions good
Cons: Didn't hold programming. Lots of unnecessary wires makes it intimidating.
It's a good product and it does the job for me without any problems. That being said, they made the installation sound a lot easier than it actually was. The kit only comes with very basic steps, you have to download and print the more detailed steps off the PAC website. Their instructions look kind of cheap and could use more detail. On my Subaru, I had to cut and splice into the factory wiring harness in the dash (which the instructions didn't mention), which made me a little nervous to say the least. If you're not electrically inclined, I recommend having someone install this for you. It's easy to do permanent damage to your factory harness if you don't know what you're doing. But I will say that once it was in, I followed the programming instructions to a T, and it works just like they said. But be careful to read every single step thoroughly.
Pros: Works just like they say, good value, personalized instructions for your specific car
Cons: No job for a novice, instructions are a little short on detail
I've installed two of these and both worked excellent.
Pros: works great easy to wire, install website ROCKS!
I am not having much luck with this item. I hooked it up and followed the programming directions, but it does not work. It is still attached, but I'm not using it. I may go back and eventually try to fix see if I can get it to work. For now I just want to enjoy my new stereo.

It might be nice to program it for different things but I wasn't able to program it for dual button control. My 07 Tacoma came with it from the factory and anything I put in afterward would have to. Returned and upgraded to a Metra product.
Pros: None in my book
Cons: Had to cut factory wiring to install, just to find out it won't do what I want it to do.
Can't get it to work. My steering wheel only has a volume button, so trying to figure out how to work this thing is a waste. The instructions don"t match my truck and the pictures show wires that I don"t have. I can reach the head unit easier.
Pros: The paper instructions will keep the paper mills running forever.
Cons: Don"t workCrutchfield response on February 1, 2016 Whenever you encounter a problem with anything you purchase from Crutchfield, especially a situation like this, please contact our customer service or tech support teams right away. The Pac SWI-RC, was installed successfully in about an hour. I had to read the instructions a few times to understand them fully. After that, I had no problems with installing or programming the adapter. The steering wheel controls worked with no problems when I turned the radio on.
Pros: Worked great the first time. All of my steering wheel control buttons work with my Pioneer radio.
Cons: None so far
With their focus on great service and a great experience, I'm not sure why Crutchfield even sells this product at all. It is just shockingly complicated and confusing to install and program. I can't believe that it is thought to be the 'best' option for the average self-installer. I have training in electronics and this was still FAR too complicated to be the best option. There are much easier (and better) alternatives available in my opinion. If the installation instructions were simplified and clarified it could help I guess. But, I will NOT be using this product again on any vehicle of mine. I bought and installed a similar product (Metra Axxess ASWC-1) for a stereo I installed last year and much prefer it over this device.
Pros: It works, after FINALLY figuring out the wiring and programming
Cons: WAYYYY too complicated to wire and install!Crutchfield response on January 26, 2016 Whenever you encounter a problem with anything you purchase from Crutchfield, especially a situation like this, please contact our customer service or tech support teams right away. Price is good trying to figure out wiring is not easy
Cons: paying install company to hook up
Product works, but be prepared to call for installation clarifications and set-up arrangements.
Pros: Unit works and has more options than stated in instructions
Cons: Instructions unclear, requires call
I only bought one of these because Crutchfield's website said I would need one to keep the steering wheel controls in my 2003 Jaguar S-Type when I replaced the stock stereo with the Sony unit I was buying from them. I tried to program this and could never get it to work with my car and that head unit. Crutchfield offered to send a replacement and while I waited for it I tried to connect the steering wheel controls directly to the Sony head unit using the jack they supplied with it and sure enough it worked fine. Fortunately Crutchfield took back both of these adapters and credited me for them so all it cost me was time, but it was a couple of hours wasted. I wish their site would not have told me I needed this adapter when clearly the head unit is equipped to interpret the signal directly from my steering wheel controls without it.
Works as described. Took a few tries to program it but once I figured it out it works well.
Pros: Use steering wheel controls like the factory radio had.
Cons: Kinda confusing at first.
I downloaded the instructions, tried to link my steering wheel controls to the stero to no avail. I have a 2005 f150 larinet. The back of the factory raidio has two wiring harnesses and I suspect the second one is for the steering wheel controls. The swi-rc instructions do not list a second wiring harness. It tells me to use a single wire (the white one). Well the white wire is daisy chained to two other wisres.
Cons: does not work, no specific instructions for my vechileCrutchfield response on January 20, 2016 Once we saw this review, our Tech Support team reached out to help the customer. We'll either help him get the adapter working the way it should, or help him return it for an exchange or refund.
Great product , works perfectly. very pleased
Well, after struggling through what should have been a much simpler process in my opinion, I ended up with nothing. I hopped on the manufacturers website and followed their instructions to the T, but never could get past the programming stage. Spent some time on the phone with Crutchfield Tech support, and they verified that I was indeed doing everything right. They stressed that the grounds must be rock solid, so I tried a few, even made my own good ground without ever getting any feedback from programming. I am going to return this and already ordered the Axxess to replace it. They claim that their unit will auto detect, and the install looks much easier than this one. Spend the extra bucks I say,
Cons: Advanced wiring for some, soldering may be required. Never worked. Instructions are somewhat messy and would leave a beginner lost.
I've done all kinds of car audio installations and usually don't have much trouble figuring things out, but that was not the case with this steering wheel interface. The instructions are poorly written on PAC Audio's website, which made it difficult to install. Also, I watched a Crutchfield installation video on line, in which they recommended you install the adapter with Posi-Tap connectors. I ordered these connectors and attempted to use them, but they failed. Upon calling Crutchfield, they told me not to use the Posi-Tap connectors, which was irritating. Finally, I got the interface soldered in correctly and the SWI-RC was receiving signals from the steering wheel. However, after speaking with Crutchfield, we tested it out with a multimeter and after all this, the SWI-RC was faulty! Crutchfield sent a new SWI-RC and I was able to get the new interface to work on the first try (finally). This installation was so complicated I will never attempt to install another of these interfaces or recommend them to a friend to install, unless it is installed professionally.
Pros: Works as advertised once you finally get it installed.
Cons: Confusing instructions, poor quality
I understand this is a one size fits all, but the instructions were very confusing and I had to use reference data from the internet, and the pages of configuration data included. I guess it's hard to get around all of that but I think it could have been written better with better explanations.
Pros: Does what it is supposed to.
Cons: Instructions were very poorly written and confusing.
I decided to pay the considerable extra cost for this device so that I could retain the option of the steering wheel controls I had gotten accustomed to using. Product works great, no lag as some places on the Internet would have you believe. But I knocked off at least 1 star because I have to admit, that of all the parts of my stock stereo w/ Bluetooth hands-free replacement I researched prior to making my purchasing decision, this thing was by far the hardest to understand and took me 2+ weeks of research both through the paper documentation, online instructions from the manufacturer (arguably the best but still lacking enough detail). I had to sift through hundreds of photos online of my stock stereo (which with the exact options my car has is apparently not very common). Once I found what the instructions were vaguely referencing, then and only then did I finally gain some confidence. The instructions are precise, if only lacking in some not exactly minor details. Pin numbers were exact though colors however, on the connector in the dash for the stereo side, did not match. Colors for the connector nebulously located in my "trunk" (which I don't even have) did however match the referenced pin numbers. Programming procedure was actually the easiest part of this thing, as that was documented perfectly with no ambiguity. Maybe it was just my car with the options I have, but this thing was not easy to install. Still glad I got it though.
Pros: Works, apparently super complicated to install precisely because it's compatible with nearly Everything.
Cons: Because it appears to want to be compatible with everything, it's instructions are confusing being both quite detailed while simultaneously leaving out other very important details.
Lots of unused wires and instructions could be simplified. But it works. That's the plus
Cons: Instructions and unused wires and programming. Programming is the longest part
Read the instructions in the box, downloaded vehicle specifics from PAC, and talked with a Crutchfield tech rep. Nothing worked. Poor instructions from PAC. This really isn't Crutchfield's problem. I could get to the programming phase and the adapter would fail every time. I would look at the Axxess adapter instead.
Pros: It came in a timely manner and nice box.
Cons: Poor instructions via PAC.
does what it says, but confusing instructions.
I had the steering wheel remote work very quickly. The controls didn't match exactly but close enough. I have steering wheel control of volume, presets and radio band. Make sure you layout all the wiring before connecting anything. You will need to combine with some wires from the receiver like power and ground.
Pros: Works well.
Cons: Lots of extra wires unused. Manual programming of the adapter a little tedious.
I bought this along with the other adapter for my 2011 f350. I tried to retain my factory sync system and steering controls. I found the instructions to be ok. However, trying to get this thing programmed is a task in its self. It seems simple. Put it in program mode, press and hold function buttons in the order they list.....sounds easy. I had minimal succes with this, and after two days of holding buttons and counting...I have about 1/4 of the functions I should have. If your radio comes with a remote, Id skip this one.....and if not....skip it anyways and just reach over to your dash.
Pros: Cant think of one.
Cons: Touchy to program. No real good way to check the programming until you are done, and if its not right....your right back at zero. Its an all or nothing type situation.Crutchfield response on January 13, 2016 Once we saw this review, our Tech Support team reached out to help the customer. We'll either help him get the adapter working the way it should, or help him return it for an exchange or refund.
The product works and it isn't too hard to install, BUT the instructions make it a lot harder than it needs to be. They weren't very clear on what to do with the white/red wire on my application. Programming isn't as bad as everyone says as long as you go one step at a time.
Pros: Does what it says it does
Cons: Terrible instructions from PAC
Works like a charm!
Pros: Works as advertised and not to hard to install.
Cons: Directions could be clearer and you have to cut into the car wiring harness
Overall, this product was very confusing to install and program. I would not recommend this product to anyone unless you have a professional to install it or have someone install it that has done it before. To this day, I still have not gotten the adapter to work with the steering wheel controls. In some way, this adapter responds to my cruise control buttons versus my stereo control buttons. I need to call Crutchfield Tech Support to figure this out and see if they are able to help me...
Cons: Horrible directions/guidance, very confusing on how to accurately install adapter and also how to program it correctly. The way my steering wheel is setup is the cruise controls are on the right and the stereo controls on the left. This adapter somehow works with my cruise controls buttons versus my stereo control buttons.Crutchfield response on January 6, 2016 Whenever you encounter a problem with anything you purchase from Crutchfield, especially a situation like this, please contact our customer service or tech support teams right away. So far the product has worked well. However, instructions were not very clear. I attempted the connection once and couldn't get it to work. However, after calling Crutchfield, their tech people explained very clearly what I needed to do and walked me through each step. Once they did that, it worked fine.
Cons: Instructions not clearly written by the company.
Would not work no matter how many times it was coded, second one I could not get to work.
Cons:Crutchfield response on January 5, 2016 We forwarded this review to our Technical Support team for follow-up. Lifetime tech support comes with every Crutchfield purchase.
Great product very easy to install and program.
Pros: Easy to use comes with all instructions. If you can't hook this up you must not be able to read
This Steering Wheel Control Adapter works excellent. The online instructions were easy to use and the steering wheel functions work excellent.
Had trouble getting the box programmed until I contacted Crutchfield tech support - they are awesome. I had made all the connections, including the serial SWC hook-up to my radio, but it turns out that the box won't accept the programming if the serial command hook-up is present. Disconnected the wire, re-programmed, and it worked. Maybe I missed this in the instructions, but I re-checked and couldn't find that note.
Pros: Was able to get all my steering wheel controls to work with the radio (Kenwood DDX672BH).
Cons: Instructions aren't the greatest. Read through most of the connection instructions and follow along step-by-step when I get to the part that says if you're using a vehicle interface box (e.g., the PAC OS-5), do something entirely different.
This steering wheel harness was very easy to install. The instructions were straight forward and only took a few minutes to connect to the new Pioneer head unit I purchased for my daughter's Nissan Versa.
Pros: Inexpensive and easy
Works well, but wish install instructions had been a bit more thorough. Like everything, there was a YouTube video I was able to find to help. Overall, great product.
This products work well once it is wired and configured. However the instructions are hard to follow making it difficult to wire and configure.
Pros: Works well and works as avertised
Cons: Difficult to wire and configure.
The product broke after a few months, so I would not recommend it to anyone. One important thing you should know - it is not plug and play. You have to program it with a series of pressing and holding buttons in various patterns depending on the function and the make and model of your car and radio. I would highly recommend writing out the instructions in a simple way you can understand, because if you have to read the instructions as written while you are trying to program it, you will take too long and will have to start all over again. There are a lot of steps and a lot of codes, so trying to memorize it all would be hard. Also, there is no internal memory back up, so if you lose power to your car for any reason - for example it goes into the shop and they have to remove the car battery - then you will have to go through all the programming again. This could mean ripping your dashboard apart again to get to it, so make sure to install it in a place that is easy to get to but also won't have any of the buttons pressed. Basically, it's a really bad design.
Pros: For a short time it worked fine.
Cons: Broke after a few months. Programming it is annoying. No memory back up so if you lose power, you have to take your dashboard apart again to get to it to reprogram it again. It was a while since I installed it now, but I l\believe it required more splicing than I expected. I thought it would be plug and play and it wasn't.
I've never installed any car audio before and I managed to figure out everything except this steering wheel controls adapter. It didn't come with anything to mate with the OEM wire harness and I wasn't about to cut it off to start splicing things myself. I'm going to ask Crutchfield for help and will update my review if anything comes of that.
I was amazed that the state of the art forces me through such a complicated instal in order to keep my steering wheel controls! Those controls simply plug into the back of the factory unit. This product is not user friendly from an instalation perspective!
Pros: It works once you get it hooked up.
Cons: Instal directions are very difficult to decider. It took two calls to Crutchfield for advice and around 3 hours just to hook this up. There has got to be a better way!
Ordered this adapter to go with Pioneer video receiver. Installation and programming was easy with one hiccup. Not sure if it was a typo or not but the unit would not program properly when turning teh ignition to the accessory position. I found that to program it the ignition had to be turned to the on position on my car. Worked as expected.
Works as advertised but it was a little difficult to get working. Had to call tech support.
Pros: Works as advertised
Cons: A little difficult to install and program
Purchased this with a Pioneer AVH-X5700BHS head, to swap out the factory deck on my 2009 Ford Fusion. Instructions were not clear - had to wade through their website, only to get More conflicting information - finally reached out, and got support from Pioneer. When I finally had it all installed, it flat out wouldn't work as advertised... "Retains steering wheel control functions when replacing the factory radio; retains programming even if the vehicle's battery is disconnected" That's nice, however, it doesn't work out that way. I just moments ago got a note back from Pioneer support telling me how I need to Bypass Sync, in my car, for all of the steering wheel controls to work, which meant buying another expensive harness, despite their own website pretty clearly stating that both my vehicle and the new stereo head are fully supported. Does not work as advertised, does not get adequate support, not going to buy from pac-audio again.
Pros: It controls volume... just not much else.
Cons: In Bluetooth mode, supports volume Only - no Track+ or Track-. In Any mode, voice activation does not work at all. in Any mode, phone answer/hang up does not work at all. Go with iDataLink Maestro, instead - which is what I'll be doing next.
Easy install for my application. Easy programming (again for my application) worked after install for a few hours. Worked about half the time shortly after. Next morning stopped working. Checked connection (soldered connections when installed) reprogrammed and again failed as before. Called Crutchfield and they gladly let me return the product. If I decide that reaching another 9 inches to change my volume becomes too difficult, I will opt for a more expensive unit.
Pros: Easy to install and program. Lots of instructions and charts for many applications
Cons: Not of great quality. Failed quickly
This product functions as expected, but the programming is more difficult than expected. Timing is everything, so follow the instructions closely.
Pros: Works as expected, steering wheel controls working as they should after mapping. You can also change the programming to map differently if you want.
Cons: Takes a while to program.
Worked as it should.
Cons: Online guide kept referring me to a honda harness/pin setup for my suzuki grand vitara. The wire colors they referenced were correct just the location of the pins on the factory harness were not where the instructions indicated.
I've been 35 yrs in computers and electronics, a well as being, and Extra licensed HAM. My last 11 yrs were as a Senior engineering technician contracted with NASA. I give my short resume to assure that I may know how to follow instructions and figure out solutions. The SWC did not work in my 2012 Toyota Tundra Crewmax. The Install instructions were pieced together through referencing two listings, one for the vehicle's particular Molex type connector on the wiring harness and the second listing of notes pertaining to the two wires to be connected to pins on the wire harness. After looking these over several times, it was clear which wires go to which pins on the vehicle's wire harness radio connector. However, I was never sure that I was connecting to the correct connector. No photographs are provided for the vehicle. I did find conflicting information about the location of the proper wire for the steering wheel control. The other source had it located behind the glove box. I investigated that location, but had no reference to pin designations. So, I stuck with the packaged instructions. With everything wired up and indications from one red LED being correct, I proceeded with the button programming which was straight forward. There was a YouTube video that explained the programming method. The instructions were not clear enough for me to be confident that I was doing the procedure properly. Following the video I tried to enter the buttons. This did not work.
Pros: The vehicle already had it's own factory installed SWC
Cons: Lost cell phone interfacing but is the new radio's fault did not work Instructions need more photographs and more work.Crutchfield response on December 15, 2015 Once we saw this review, our Tech Support team reached out to help the customer. I installed this, along with the Alpine CDE-153BT, in a 2005 Honda Odyssey with the base stereo (no navigation, no subwoofer). The vehicle-specific instructions are so poorly written that reviews that say the instructions are "confusing" are very charitable. The instructions are both poorly written and ambiguous. In the case of the Odyssey, the vehicle-specific note reads: "Connect the INTERFACEs white wires to Pin3 (white) of the above connector. Connect pin 11 (brown) to ground." It took 2 hours, multiple Google and YouTube searches, and finally looking at the instructions for the competing Axxess ASWC-1 to realize that the brown wire referenced in that statement was the brown wire that's part of the vehicle's wiring harness, not the brown wire in the SWI-RC.
Pros: It actually controls the stereo through the steering wheel controls and comes in an attractive cardboard box Programming survives loss of vehicle battery (at least for short durations)
Cons: Requires cutting wires on the vehicle wiring harness Confusing, poorly-written, ambiguous instructions with typos No YouTube videos from PAC showing how to program this particular model Ruined a good chunk of my Saturday
This item works great but has a degree of difficulty in installation
Pros: Can be customized Works perfect
Cons: Difficult to install Vague instructions
Very difficult install for my application. Still doesn't work correctly
Pros: My steering wheel controls aren't completely useless anymore.
Cons: Difficulty installing. Still isn't programmed correctly but I give up.Crutchfield response on December 15, 2015 Once we saw this review, our Tech Support team reached out to help the customer. Read all the directions and take your time. It works great after getting it programmed...
Pros: Works great
Cons: Can feel a little overwhelming when wiring up and programming.
Comes with everything you need to retain factory steering wheel controls. Might be difficult for a first time installer depending on the application.
Pros: Easy for someone with moderate installation experience.
Cons: Some might find this difficult. Crutchfield should include a vehicle specific walk through that would help some people.
The PAC SWI-RC was difficult to install compared to the Axxess ASWC-1, but allows for customized control programming, which is also a little complicated. To install the PAC SWI-RC it was necessary to connect the unit to the wiring under the steering column. Programming required setting up the unit for the car and stereo type, then initializing the unit, then setting each function for the steering wheel controls. In comparison the Axxess ASWC-1 only required tapping into an existing wire that was immediately behind the stereo unit. Thanks to Crutchfield for amazing technical support with this product!
Pros: Customize steering controls
Cons: Difficult to install
This remote does what it is designed to. But the directions for installation are quite vague and difficult to decipher. Also for some strange reason it does not include a harness to connect to the car's factory harness for the steering wheel controls. You are forced to cut out the car's factory harness and hardware the two together. Doesn't make much sense and really leaves too much room for error.
Pros: Works well Can be easily reprogrammed
Cons: Vague instructions hard to understand what you need to do. No harness makes no sense and makes installation more difficult and risky. Not a great product for people not comfortable with self installation.
Easy install and programming. Looked scary at first with all those wires, but you don't use most of them for my setup. 2006 F150
No complaints so far. easy install as long as you use correct instructions. set up was easy.
Couldn't figure it out (and I'm an engineer). I got the vehicle and radio specific instructions on line, reviewed them, watched the online video, read the instructions, rewired it three times. Finally gave up on it.
Cons:Crutchfield response on December 2, 2015 Once we saw this review, our Tech Support team reached out to help the customer. We'll either help him get this working the way it should, or help him return it for an exchange or refund.
I was concerned It wouldn't work as advertised, but it does. I use my steering wheel controls 95% of the time so this was a very important part of my aftermarket head unit, speaker and sub upgrade.
Pros: I maintain the controls via the steering wheel.
Wired up fairly easily & allowed me to keep my factory steering wheel controls in my '05 4Runner. Instructions were a little sketchy, but with a little google searching, I got it figured out & working great.
Pros: Simple & it just works
Cons: instructions not clear at times
Does not work fully with Sony XAV-68BT. This was my second steering wheel control adapter from Crutchfield and the second one with problems.
Pros: Mostly works if you don't need a volume up - you can map volume up to another command.
Cons: Tech support is hit or miss. Apparently steering wheel controls don't work well.
I find this very useful to continue to have the steering wheel functions that I had with my factory installed unit. It goes for safer driving as one does not have to take your eyes off the road while driving.
Pros: Good device
Wanted to retain steering wheel controls but after having messed with itI could have just as easily done without. You have to manually splice into the vehicle wiring harness. Pain. Then you have to program it. Pain. If you ever disconnect the battery you will have to reprogram it. Pain. And worst of all it is not near as functional as the OEM set-up. Save your money.
Pros: Few if any
Cons: Not user friendly. PITB installing. Does not work well
Was a pain in the butt to install in my 2010 Tacoma and kenwood dx371. I finally got it running after some connection issues. After a year it just stopped working. I have reprogrammed it according to the instructions. Everything lit up on the controller as intended but it had no effect on the radio. I was really pleased while it worked but it doesn't anymore so it's a waste. I wish I could get it working again.
Pros: Great while it lasted.
Cons: Pain to put in Stopped working for no reason after 1 year
works perfectly, instructions were spot on
I am very disappointed in this product. Programming was a hassle. Now I've had it installed for about 2 weeks, the steering control buttons only work intermittently, seems like only after the truck has warmed. I have not attempted to reprogram it yet as it will require taking the dash apart again. It was a waste of money!!
Cons: Is only working intermittently after about 10 days. :-(
OK, i wrote a long review that told you how I got it to work....then it deleted...so I turned car to On position, held down program button and disconnected the female end (all wires are attached) to reset the switch, BECAUSE nothing else worked. Once disconnected with program button down, i reconnected and let go of the program button. IT WORKED. Then programmed, because shutting the car to off position never reset the switch...good luck..sorry shorter this time.
Pros: finally worked
Cons: Took forever to get to work.
Little confusing at first but read over instructions several times, wired into aftermarket harness and installed. You have to install module before you can install the head unit. You have to follow instructions on setup and programming steering wheel buttons. Works great and very satisfied.
Pros: Little confusing but read several times prior to installing. Make sure to installing into aftermarket wiring.
Cons: Instructions somewhat confusing but as I mentioned in pros, read read read.
It was a bit hard to program. I had to cal 4 times to the right answer from Crutchfield as to which vehicle # I needed
Pros: small and easy to connect
Cons: hard to program
It won't work.
Pros: none. waste of time and money.
Cons: Followed the directions. Called for help. It doesn't work.
Worked perfectly on my sons Honda S2000 with Pioneer heed unit
Pros: Works Easy to wire with new headunit
Cons: Directions can be a bit confusing.
This thing stinks, i want to return it !
Cons: The instructions are horrible and they didn't match my carCrutchfield response on November 16, 2015 Whenever you encounter a problem with anything you purchase from Crutchfield, especially a situation like this, please contact our Customer Support team. I bought this because the radio in our old Audi broke. The car is a back up car used in winter so after installing all the other parts I decided programming the steering wheel controller just wasn't worth the time.
Pros: Nice feature to add if it is important to you.
Cons: Installation is not straight forward and tedious.
Works as advertised. Makes for a nice installation.
Pros: Simple after the learning curve.
Cons: Be sure to download your specific instructions 1st, don't rely on enclosed material.
Easy to install and program and have my steering wheel control
Pros: Easy to install
Cons: Did not work. A waste of money and time spent wiring!Crutchfield response on October 26, 2015 We forwarded this review to our Technical Support team for follow-up. Lifetime tech support comes with every Crutchfield purchase.
This little deice allows you to use your factory steering wheel radio buttons on aftermarket radios.
Pros: Allows use of factory steering wheel controls
Cons: Complicated install
When I first opened the box and saw a ton of wires AND resistors I just about give up and returned the product (didn't help that it was midnight already). I decided to give it another look the next day and found out it wasn't that bad... you don't even use half the wires in most cases! Just follow the directs exactly and you should have no problem and perfectly functioning steering wheel controls.
Pros: It just works. You can also customize your buttons and re-map them how you like!
Cons: Very intimidating when starting.
This product hooks up the steering wheel controls for music to the stereo. Easy to install and program. This is a good product to have if you have controls on your steering wheel that you don't want to lose when installing a new stereo.
Pros: Easy to install. If you have problems, the Crutchfield support team is there to help you.
The device works well and is very configurable to about any car. Trouble with being very adaptable is deciphering the instructions to know all of the connections needed to work for your car. If you read through the steps, you'll be missing what is laid out in the diagrams. Have to pay attention to both the diagram and the instructions to get it connected correctly. For my installation ('10 Toyota Tacoma), I needed a 560 ohm resistor to connect pin 8 from the factory steering wheel harness (referred to them as INTERFACE - deciphered that) to the modules white wire which I did according to the step by step instructions. Unit wouldn't program until I connected the factory steering wheel harness Pin 6 to ground, which was covered in the diagram. The unit can handle more options that I have steering wheel controls, figured out to use my track up button to switch between presets and track down button for changing between bands (FM1-3 or Sirius SKM1-3)
Pros: Works as described once you get past connecting it.
Cons: Connecting is was painful to figure out the unclear instructions from manufacturer and Crutchfield.
Very confusion directions. It took a while to figure out the "interface" referred to was not the "interface" between the main plug and the head unit. I suppose it wold have been too much work to write "PAC SW-1 Interface box". I was glad to figure out that my set up had the white and "black and white" wires so I didn't have to solder in the reisistor. Well, maybe that was good, maybe not. I was genuinely amazed when this thing worked as soon as I programmed it. . . ticked off when it stopped working a few days later. . . confused when suddenly it started working again. . . then ticked off again when it quit. Then very, very ticked off when I burned another half day of vacation taking the whole thing out to check the connections, the ground etc. with the result that now it won't work at all. Considering the overall weak ratings here I can only guess it was "recommended" because it's more profitable. Do yourself a favor and read the reviews of the minor components "recommended" with your headunit. This has been a real time waster for me and I'll have to try again when the wife gets back from her trip.
Pros: Worked. . . occasionally
Cons: Only worked occasionally.
Product did not work at all with the initial settings. When tried to program manually functions on steering wheel did not correspond to radio functions on radio.Used the white wire on the unit connected to the brown on the harness and green to ground and rotary switch position 7 with program 8 and nothing happened. Glad the radio had a remote. Notworht wasting time on this feature.
Cons: Didn't work.
Install instructions weren't great, but after a quick call to Crutchfield, I got it installed easily enough. Controls, though, seem to be delayed, if they work at all. May pull the new stereo back out and see if there's some wires I forgot to tape up.
Pros: Gets the job done
Cons: Delayed, sometimes non-working controls; poor install instructions
Kind of confusing at first. The connection in the chart is not the same that I had on my 08 Tacoma. Once I figured out though it was a great products. Works good but with a little lag. Could just be my unit though.
Pros: Works good once figure out the correct wires to use.
Cons: A little slow, confusing at first.
Works great with 2006 Honda Odyssey. Included instructions are not easy to follow, though.
Pros: Steering wheel controls work well.
Cons: Hard to follow instructions
Directions were not super clear, but it works for the most part. One original button did not work. Would have been nice to know that beforehand.
Cons: Directions could use some clarification. Understand that it may not support all original buttons.
Installed on 2012 Tundra, installed in a couple hours. Works great!
Pros: Works just as described
Easy install and programming. Functions as advertised.
Unable to get the adaptor to recognize my steering wheel controls. Got it powered up and wired the harness (which should be the difficult part) with no problem, instructions said to tap one wire into the car-side harness and nothing--now I don't want to cut it out and have to try again. Instructions were not clear, white wire on PAC unit splits into 3 white wires, didn't say which one.
Pros: Great Idea
Cons: Unable to get it to work in my carCrutchfield response on October 19, 2015 We forwarded this review to our Technical Support team for follow-up. Lifetime tech support comes with every Crutchfield purchase.
This unit works as advertised but programming was an absolute nightmare. The instructions are completely wrong. Even going to the web site they were still wrong. I had to do some major digging through the forums to figure out how to program this. Hopefully the info that I give here will prevent someone from starting there vehicle and closing the garage door after trying to program this. Where the instructions say to hold the program button for 5 secs.....DO NOT. When you turn the ignition key on, push the program button once, then set your first command by hold the swc button for 5 secs, then your next command and so on. If you need to skip a command, just push the program button once then move to the next swc function.
Pros: Works well
Cons: Terrible instructions.
I used this to attempt to retain my steering wheel controls in my 2003 Focus SVT. I wired in the unit. It would power on but I was unable to program the steering wheel controls. It did not appear to recognize the controls when I would try to program them. The steering wheel controls were not that important so I quickly gave up. I followed the installation and programming instructions per the manufacturer's website but I can't guarantee I didn't do something wrong.
This unit worked great in my 06 Civic for retaining the steering wheel buttons. The directions provided by Crutchfield were simple step by step- No problem. Thanks!
Pros: Works great
Great interface to keep factory steering wheel controls. Programming is a little tricky, but even a novice (like me) can manage it.
Pros: Keeps your steering wheel controls.
Cons: Programming a little tricky.
the product does come with all the resistors neded to make it work on a motorcycle
Cons: dosent work
Installing this thing reminded me of that classic scene from MASH where they have to defuse the bomb using Army instructions ("Cut the wires... but first, remove the fuse..."). You definitely need to look at the paper instructions, go to their web site and download your vehicle-specific instructions, and read them both completely and make sure you understand what you're supposed to be doing. In my case it actually said in one step that I would only need the black, white, and red wires, then in the next step said if I also had a black/white striped wire I would need that too (I did). When you order your stereo from Crutchfield they automatically offer the vehicle adapters for the stereo, but not for this unit. I didn't want to cut the wiring inside my car, so I ended up rigging up an adapter myself. Once actually installed, programming the unit worked great (the paper instructions were correct, the downloaded ones were obviously not) and everything worked perfectly the first time.
Pros: Works great Easy to program
Cons: Installation instruction are confusing No vehicle adapter
The unit was easy to install and configure, and worked perfect the first time I completed the configuration. It is great to be able to retain the use of the Steering wheel controls with the aftermarket deck!
Pros: Fairly easy install and configuration. It worked perfect the first time through!
Cons: Instructions could be a little better on identifying the factory wiring harness to connect to and some of the wiring reference specific to the device.
I replaced the OEM radio in a 1995 Taurus with an aftermarket one that had a CD player and Bluetooth technology. I was a little hesitant at first because the old radio still was in good working order and had external controls not on the steering wheel but located near the steering wheel on the dash that I still wanted to work. After speaking to technical support at Crutchfield they provided me with this simple add on. I am now happy with this purchase and my Grandson is elated! I suppose the next purchase will be a backup camera or blind spot monitoring!
Pros: Easy install only took a few minutes after the radio is removed.
Cons: A little difficult to program. I wanted to use the dash mounted button MEMORY to be used as a MUTE button since no control was listed. I had an extra unused wire labeled as MUTE that may have been used. The VOL+ and VOL- and SOURCE controls work fine however.
It worked for 3 days. I'm not sure what happened, but everything stopped working. I am assuming that the programming glitched, but I was not expecting to have to take my stereo back out to re-program it. The batter was never disconnected, so it isn't related to power. I will just have to investigate.
Pros: Online install instructions were good | Compact | Does what it's supposed to do
Cons: Paper instructions are overwhelming. It stopped working in less than one week.Crutchfield response on October 5, 2015 We forwarded this review to our Technical Support team for follow-up. Lifetime tech support comes with every Crutchfield purchase.
This thing was a pain to put in. I wish I had paid the extra money for the Metra adapter. I put a Metra steering wheel adapter in a friend's car and it was way easier. Didn't need to program anything push a couple buttons and it learned everything one it's own. Not this thing tho.
Cons: Confusing to put in and get it programmed.
Very complicated install but when you do it works flawlessly
Pros: Does what it's supposed to
Cons: Complicated install
with the headache of install and soldering that had to be done you'd think it'd work correctly. We followed install steps to a T and had less than half the function promised. It would turn up my radio after the relearn process but would not turn it down, turn it off, change sources, or anything aside from turn the stereo up. When we tried to redo the learn process it would always take the first step but then for step two it wasn't even acting as if I was pressing the down volume button it would just flash and skip that step.
Pros: easy to read instructions.
Cons: hard to get to work correctly even after following every step in the book and provided website.
Once the device was configure, it worked well and was nice to have.
Pros: You get to use the factory steering wheels controls.
Cons: Installation was a bit of a hassle and the instructions were not very intuitive. Also, if you need to re-program it, you need to dis-assemble your work. I think they are on the right track with the device, but installation and configuration needs to less hassle, and I'm guessing as technology changes it will.
