Installation Note: Some newer vehicles require a special interface for this installation. Click here to see if you need an interface to install the SWI-RC adapter in your vehicle. If you see one, add it to your cart along with this adapter.

You want to install an aftermarket stereo in your vehicle, but you hate to give up the convenience of your factory steering wheel radio controls? No problem. PAC's SWI-RC adapter allows you to use the steering wheel audio controls in a wide variety of vehicles to command select radios from Alpine, Clarion, Dual, Jensen, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer, and Sony.

Installation is straightforward — connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and your stereo, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. The direct connection to the stereo eliminates the need for an infrared emitter, allowing the interface to function even in bright sunlight. Step-by-step LED confirmation makes programming easy. Once connected, the SWI-RC's failsafe memory will learn up to 12 stereo functions, retaining them even if battery power is interrupted. Dimensions: 2"W x 7/8"H x 2-7/8"D. Warranty: 1 year.

Important Note: On some vehicles, you may need a voltmeter to locate the correct wires to connect to the SWI-RC. If you have no car audio installation experience, you should consider professional installation. The SWI-RC works with most Alpine, Clarion, Dual, Jensen, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer, and Sony stereos that have a wired remote control input port or a dedicated steering wheel input, but please call or email us to confirm compatibility with your radio.

Wiring Advisory: You'll usually have to tap into one to three wires in your vehicle at the radio location to connect this interface. If you're using a PAC OEM integration adapter to connect your new car stereo to your vehicle, then it most likely will have a prewired connector for this PAC steering wheel audio control adapter. In these cases, no additional wiring in required. PAC does provide custom wiring instructions for all confirmed compatible vehicles on their website.

What does a steering wheel audio control adapter do?

Many people aren't thrilled with the sound of their car's factory radio, but don't want to replace it because they'll lose those convenient audio controls on the steering wheel. For most vehicles, you can purchase an adapter that allows you to use those controls to run a new car stereo, so now you can have great sound and convenience too. Even cooler, if your new stereo has iPod controls, you can use your steering wheel controls to run your iPod.

Works, but some problems

Written By ohiogeorge, Avon, Ohio on Monday, July 27, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Small problem with wiring, almost spliced into wrong factory wiring, but Crutchfield support easily guided me to the correct area. Programming was more difficult than I expected. Timing on pressing the programming buttons is very crucial. If your timing is off, your steering wheel controls are off. In order to reprogram you need to do the entire program all over again. It took me quite a few trys to get it almost correct. I got my volume controls and mode controls to work, but my forward and reverse control buttons are not working. I was satisfied with that and did not want to try programming again and possibly lose what I already got correct.

Pros: Relatively easy installation. Happy to have my major steering controls working

Cons: Programming a little more difficult than expected. Might be easier if two people were involved.

Works for 1998 Grand Cherokee

Written By Keith, Florida on Monday, July 20, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Worked great! Although the Crutchfield website said it was not compatible with my vehicle, the PAC website showed that it was. I had to use the programming instructions for "All Other Vehicles" under Jeep for 1998 instead of specifically Grand Cherokee, but it works great!

Pros: Functions exactly as advertised.

Cons: None.

READ PAC'S INSTRUCTIONS FROM THEIR WEBSITE

Written By Pete, Louisiana on Saturday, July 18, 2015

Go to pac's website and print the instructions for your vehicle. Read and follow them carefully. I had a problem programming when it came to skipping a funtcion I did not want, all I had to do was to READ CAREFULLY the instructions, told me what to do on the next line. Works perfect, Alpine CDE-143 BT / 1999 Dodge Dakota

Pretty good

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Instructions were decipherable, and after a few missteps in programming which required starting again, it works. Unfortunately, hubby accidentally tapped the programming button while installing the unit (after I programmed it), which then erased all the commands. This required removing the newly-installed head unit again, soldering a longer wire onto the module so I could SEE it while my fingers danced across steering wheel buttons in a particular order within a specified number of seconds, and then reinstalling everything again. Overall, would say I'm pleased, but the steering wheel controls don't work "exactly" like they did with the OEM radio. The "up" and "down" buttons used to step through whatever radio stations were programmed into the buttons on the head unit; now they just "scroll" through radio stations, without regard to what is programmed. Oh well, I can still tap the buttons on the front of the radio easily enough. Bottom line: Good enough that I would recommend, with the caveat that it may not work EXACTLY like it did prior to head unit replacement. Programming button placement is difficult to use for programming, but apparently extremely easy to inadvertently push while trying to secure it inside the dashboard. It would have been very helpful if the wiring had been just a little bit longer, to allow easier access for "reprogramming." You might need it. :)

Pros: Works, beats the heck out of "dead" steering wheel controls.

Cons: May not exactly duplicate prior actions of buttons on steering wheel; we found that wiring attached to module needed to be a foot or two longer.

The bottom line is that it works. Installing and programming isn't easy. The directions could be better. Once installed it took two of us to program it right. One to read the directions and another to push the buttons.

Pros: Works as advertised

Cons: Installing and programming isn't intuitive.

Excellent product. Works great in my '11 Impreza Outback Sport. Had to call Crutchfield to help me with the install at one point because my harnesses didn't match what PAC said I should have. They were able to help me figure it out and get things working on the first try! After that, programming and install was nice and easy.

Pros: Straightforward install. Works great!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It took me a while to figure it out how to connect the cables for my car (Suzuki Grand Vitara 2006). Connectivity varies a lot depending on your car and model and year built. They have pretty extensive list of cars and how to setup, but it was a bit confusing for me. The pre-configuration did not work for my car (however, I might have powered connected at the beginning using the wrong code setup, which might have messed up the programming for the wheel controls). I had to re-program the buttons, which it works fine, although sometimes (very few times) does not respond. It could be because of a loosen cable connection or I need to re-program the buttons correctly.

Gets The Job Done With Additional Support

Written By Kkoppy, Missouri on Wednesday, July 01, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The installation instructions as related to the wiring are simple but the programming instructions are terrible. Contained within the box are pages and pages of indecipherable information for various vehicles. I went to the online site and after step seven, the instructions lack sensible clarity and left me gnashing my teeth. The instructions online are different than the instructions contained in the box so I called Crutchfield for support. I received the help I needed and everything is working correctly. The solution was very simple but the instructions led me no where near the final resolution. Thank you Crutchfield, I went from significant frustration to complete satisfaction.

Pros: Works great and as hoped.

Cons: The programing instructions are much more difficult and confusing than necessary. A simple rewrite by the manufacturer could easily fix the problem.

Pros and Cons

Written By Paul, Montana on Tuesday, June 30, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The elephant in the room that we need to talk about is programming this controller. That can be a bit of a pain in the rear and try your patience while wishing you had opposable thumbs on your feet to get the job done. The first time did not go well for me because I was trying to double assign buttons to the thing. Yeah, it does not like that. So programming it.... well, that can be a bit of a pain.

The upside is that it is programmable so you can program different functions for the steering wheel buttons. Really, once you figure out how to program the module it is not that big of a deal to get it going. The thing I learned.... make sure YOU SET THE VEHICLE program correctly. You will want to throw thing out the window. Instead of breaking something I just put it away and went to bed. The next morning I realized I forgot to turn over the page where it tells you to program the vehicle.... duh! Now, it works like a champ.

Pros: You can program it to use the steering wheel buttons as you desire.

Cons: You have to program it and splice wires while standing on your head.... okay not that bad, but it feels like it at times.

Once figured out wiring and programming works very good!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

At first, item and wiring looks intimidating, but once instructions are followed step by step, no problem. Takes patience and time plus the ability to have an assistant help with the instructions so you keep track of where you are, especially with the programming of the functions.

Pros: Keeping the steering wheel controls is great. Once helped via email from Crutchfield for detailed instructions, wiring is simplified.

Cons: Lots of splicing and technical knowledge necessary.

Installed on 2008 Hyundai Veracruz. Worked great. Retained all functions of radio controls in steering wheel. Highly recommend.

Pros: Easy to install and works as described. Excellent product.

Cons: Would have liked to see longer wires. Make sure to read installation and configuration instructions completely. Made mistake of not connecting ground wire. Identified problem after reviewing instructions again in detail. After correct connection, worked fine.

Works, but complicated install

Written By Morsk, California on Thursday, June 25, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It works, but my Nissan required resistors which for one weren't labeled so I had to discern color bands (is that a black or a blue?), then the instructions said to "stick resistor into connector". Well that doesn't hold, so I had to cut off the factory connector and solder the resistor in place. If things are that complicated then a Nissan wiring harness should have been made available. Programming the device was clunky, but in the end it worked.

Pros: It works and is reasonably priced.

Cons: Having to sort through a packet of resistors and then solder them in place is a bit much. Had I known what I was getting into I would have abandoned the steering wheel controls.

The instructions said follow number 9 for my vehicle, went from 8 to 10. OK so says go to website for further information after searching for quite some time I finally clicked on a link for vehicle Specific instructions put in a few things and was able to print step by step instructions. Website needs some work. Then get to install process and the Metra harness doesn't provide wire to steering wheel buttons so had to tap into vehicle harness. Programming went pretty well. I was successful retaining all buttons.

Pros: Works well

Cons: Web page not very easy to navigate. Instructions for my vehicle skipped. Had to cut into factory harness to install due to Metra harness missing wire.

When I first opened the box for this ans saw the wires and all the instructions and diagrams I was thinking "ah $h!t, what did I do?" but after going online and and entering the vehicle type and system, it was a very easy set up. I actually read it a few times because I couldn't believe it was that simple and thought I was missing something. One connection and some programming and it was done. I would highly recommend this if you want your steering wheel controls to work.

Pros: So easy to hook up.

Used this to adapt 07 Sedona's steering wheel controls to new JVC stereo. Came with all sorts of resistors and confusing instructions. Looked online and found easy vehicle specific instructions. Hooked up plugged in and have steering wheel controls!

Pros: Works as good as oem 4 wire hookup for my application easy to program

Cons: Wire color in instructions didnt match vehicle Could be complicated install if resistors are required unclear instructions

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Prior to ordering this, I looked up the process on PAC's webpage, and looking at the instructions without the unit right there in front of me made installation look intimidating. However, when I got it and the new JVC head unit I put into my 2006 Scion Xb, I found that the installation process was surprisingly quick and easy! There are a good amount of extra/unused wires that had to be wrapped up and tucked behind the dash (it must look like a rat's nest behind my stereo), but the unit is working great, and it's nice to be able to keep my steering wheel controls.

Pros: Relatively easy to install, works great!

Cons: A lot of extra unused wiring taking up space

Cake install. Instructions easily laid out for people if they've never installed one before. Had an awkward year of vehicle. Called manufacturer and they told me in my year only was a while a different color. All years prior and after were wire as listed in instructions.

Pros: Retains most (selectable) steering wheel controls.

Cons: Dumb auto manufacturer changed wire color for one year. Must have been a drought on red with black wire insulation. Wasn't a problem on the SWI-RC though.

Bought this for my 2012 Lancer Gt, head unit was the Pioneer FH-X720BT easy to install. Instructions was easy to follow just needed to plug in 5 wires, 2 of them plug is to factory wires the rest was ground and pluged in back of radio. Controls works good no problem setting up controls to work like factory. Would recommend this.

Poor performance

Written By IvanLN, Florida on Wednesday, June 10, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The PAC SWI-RC is not worth the cost. The control is difficult to install mainly because of the poor instructions it comes with but also it is technically complex. I consider myself better than average in electronics matters; I am an electronics engineer but the instructions are very poorly written. It is sold as compatible but it does not come with compatible connectors. Cutting OEM connectors and soldering are necessary for the installation. Functionality is also bad. The control would not correctly program the seek or the preset functions. Two calls to tech support and no resolution. The best they could offer was to "try programming again". This is definitely a do not buy. Would give a negative star if possible.

Pros: None.

Cons: Installation difficulty. Poor performance. No OEM connector interface.

The adapter worked well, but installation was a little cumbersome. I can see where it would frustrate some. I cannot stress enough the need to solder all of the wire splices rather than using any type of quick connectors.

Pros: Works well once installed.

Cons: The need to test after installation and add (by soldering) a capacitor if not operating properly and test again. I needed the capacitor, which was provided with the unit. Must be programed manually.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased a Pioneer FH-X720BT for my 2005 Honda CRV, with appropriate wiring harness and dash adapter kit. Of all the stages of this install, I was least confident about installing the Steering Wheel Interface. The instructions provided by the manufacturer were very brief and not entirely helpful. After attaching the red and black wires, I was supposed to attached the white wire(s) to the correct wire matching Pin #3 in the Honda 20-pin. I didn't fully understand which wire they were talking about, and certainly didn't understand I needed to splice into the factory wire harness (Green wire with red stripe). I called Crutchfield Tech Support and they confirmed what I needed to do. The product allows most of the steering wheel controls I had with my factory 6-disc radio, but I was not able to capture all of them except what I decided was most important - volume up/down, mode, and the channel up. Channel up does not seem to move through the preset channels but actually moves up the tuner and will scan if held up.

Pros: I was able to keep the most important functions of my steering wheel controls.

Cons: Installation instructions were a bit vague, and programming the unit was tiresome and took several tries to get it right. My previous channel up/down control allowed me to cycle through AM/FM presets, as well as tracks on a cd. I seem to have a scan capability only with the radio, but have not tried a CD yet. It doesn't appear you can assign more than one function to the same control - like using channel up/down for track up/down, etc.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It takes a while to get setup. I installed it in a 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee, which was hard to find directions for. I ended up calling Crutchfield customer service and they were able to tell me which clock spring wire to cut in the steering column, and which wire on the PAC adapter to use. Other than that it's pretty easy. It's a universal product for the most part but the fact they have customer service on saturdays but only for dealers was frustrating. It does work great though.

Pros: Retain factory steering wheel radio controls Versatile

Cons: Difficult to install Instructions need improvement.
