Our take on the PAC SWI-RC

by John Pollard

What does a steering wheel audio control adapter do?

Many people aren't thrilled with the sound of their car's factory radio, but don't want to replace it because they'll lose those convenient audio controls on the steering wheel. For most vehicles, you can purchase an adapter that allows you to use those controls to run a new car stereo, so now you can have great sound and convenience too. Even cooler, if your new stereo has iPod controls, you can use your steering wheel controls to run your iPod.

Installation Note: Some newer vehicles require a special interface for this installation. Click here to see if you need an interface to install the SWI-RC adapter in your vehicle. If you see one, add it to your cart along with this adapter.

You want to install an aftermarket stereo in your vehicle, but you hate to give up the convenience of your factory steering wheel radio controls? No problem. PAC's SWI-RC interface allows you to use the steering wheel audio controls in a wide variety of vehicles to command select radios from Alpine, Clarion, Dual, Jensen, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer, and Sony.

Installation is straightforward — connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and your stereo, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. The direct connection to the stereo eliminates the need for an infrared emitter, allowing the interface to function even in bright sunlight. Step-by-step LED confirmation makes programming easy. Once connected, the SWI-RC's failsafe memory will learn up to 12 stereo functions, retaining them even if battery power is interrupted. Dimensions: 2"W x 7/8"H x 2-7/8"D. Warranty: 1 year.

Important Note: On some vehicles, you may need a voltmeter to locate the correct wires to connect to the SWI-RC. If you have no car audio installation experience, you should consider professional installation. The SWI-RC works with most Alpine, Clarion, Dual, Jensen, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer, and Sony stereos that have a wired remote control input port or a dedicated steering wheel input, but please call or email us to confirm compatibility with your radio.

Wiring Advisory: You'll usually have to tap into one to three wires in your vehicle at the radio location to connect this interface. If you're using a PAC OEM integration adapter to connect your new car stereo to your vehicle, then it most likely will have a prewired connector for this PAC steering wheel audio control adapter. In these cases, no additional wiring in required. PAC does provide custom wiring instructions for all confirmed compatible vehicles on their website.

Features

Overview: The PAC SWI-RC Steering Wheel Control Interface lets you retain steering wheel control functions when replacing the factory radio in select vehicles with an aftermarket head unit that is OEM steering wheel control compatible.

Wiring Advisory: You'll usually have to hardwire this adapter into your vehicle's wiring. In most vehicles, the factory radio plug does not have a wire dedicated to the steering wheel audio controls, so splicing & soldering is often required. PAC does provide custom wiring instructions for all confirmed compatible vehicles on their website.

Compatible Aftermarket Head Units: The PAC SWI-RC Steering Wheel Control Interface is compatible with the following steering wheel remote ready aftermarket head units.

  • Alpine, Clarion, Dual, Jensen Pioneer, Sony, and Valor: The aftermarket head unit must be equipped with a 3.5mm steering wheel input jack.
  • JVC & Kenwood: The aftermarket head unit must be equipped with a blue/yellow steering wheel input wire.

Note: Not compatible with Rosen, CarShow, or Parrot receivers.

Vehicle Application: The PAC SWI-RC Steering Wheel Control Interface is compatible with models from the following car manufactures; Acura, Audi, BMW, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Ford, GMC, Harley Davidson, Honda, Hummer, Hyundai, Infiniti, Isuzu, Jaguar, Jeep, Kia, Land Rover, Lexus, Lincoln, Mazda, Mercedes, Mercury, Mini, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Oldsmobile, Plymouth, Pontiac, Porsche, Saab, Saturn, Scion, Suzuki, Toyota, and Volkswagen. Check out PAC's online vehicle application chart for the latest vehicle compatibility.

Note: Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

Note: The PAC SWI-RC Steering Wheel Control Interface retains programming even if your vehicle's battery is disconnected.

Compatibility Notes:

  • The Clarion CZ500 does not support remote Bluetooth controls.
  • The JVC KW-NT1 and KW-NT3HDT do not support preset up/down from steering wheel controls.
  • The Pioneer AVIC-F series radios do not interpret radio preset seeking commands. This is a limitation of the radio, not the SWI-RC.
  • Pioneer head units with Bluetooth feature, the steering wheel controls will not adjust the phone call volume. The phone call volume must be adjusted on the face of the Pioneer head unit. This is a limitation of the radio and not the SWI-RC.
  • Only the Pioneer AVIC-Z110BT, Z120, Z130, and AVIC-X920BT, X930BT will support the voice recognition function via wired remote input.

Resistor Kit: Some vehicles have a separate wire for each of the steering wheel buttons. Use the resistor kit for steering wheel push buttons that do not already have a resistor network connected to them. The resistor kit includes the following resistors:

  • 47 Ohms (yellow, purple, black, and gold bands)
  • 100 Ohms (brown, black, brown, and gold bands)
  • 150 Ohms (brown, green, brown, and gold bands)
  • 560 Ohms (green, blue, brown, and gold bands)
  • 1000 Ohms (brown, black, red, and gold bands)
  • 1500 Ohms (brown, green, red, and gold bands)
  • 3900 Ohms (orange, white, red, and gold bands)
  • 5100 Ohms (green, brown, red, and gold bands)

0.47uF Capacitor: In the rare case where your vehicle's steering wheel buttons are intermittent or the aftermarket radio sometimes functions by itself, the enclosed 0.47uF capacitor can be installed to solve this issue. The 0.47uF capacitor can be connected between the SWI-RC interface's white and black wires. Connect the lead of the supplied capacitor to the SWI-RC's white wire and the remaining lead to ground.

It was a little tricky to get it set up, but not that bad. Use the website instructions, not the paper ones that are included. Once installed, it works perfectly -- without having to think about it at all

I'm not cutting wires from my stock harness!
Pros:
No idea, didn't install
Cons:
Apparently, even with the harness adapter from the Scosche HD7000B kit, you STILL must cut a pink wire from you wire harness and ground it our somewhere. Not acceptable. Returned. I'll have to spend the $$ for a different adapter instead... no cutting there, just plug and play.

Steering wheel controls now work

Written By JeffW, Bend, OR on Saturday, April 05, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works just fine. The wiring is simple in that you just plug it in. Programming is more complex, but Crutchfield tech support suggested I call when ready to do it, so I did. Very knowledgeable technician stepped me through the process (not at all intuitive) and within a few minutes, it was fully functional.
Pros:
Retains functionality of original steering wheel controls (volume and channel scan).
Cons:
You will want to phone in to get excellent support for programming.

PAC SWI-RC

Written By John, Northern VA on Saturday, March 29, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this in my '06 Audi A4 Avant. I really like this unit. I like that it is programmable, and was able to program it to have a lot more functionality than the OEM Symphony II unit had at the steering wheel. The only issue is that it was difficult to program. I probably went through the programming 10 times to get it right, but those 10 times probably took me 15 -20 minutes, so it's not all that bad. My steering wheel has scrolling controls. The instructions say to push and hold the s/w button until you see the light flash. But for the scrolling controls, you just scroll them 1 click, then immediately go on to the next function. For the push button controls, just push them once, then move on. So it's actually very simple once you figure it out. On the instruction sheet, I just wrote down what button to push/scroll, then flew through the process pretty quickly once I figured out the quirks.
Pros:
A lot more customizable control than the OEM unit gave me.
Cons:
Occasionally, I have to scroll 2 clicks or push a button twice to get it to take effect. But that may actually be the buttons on my steering wheel, because I think it also did that with the OEM stereo. You also need some space behind the head unit for the box, or would need to attach it somewhere outside the compartment, such as the glove box, and run the wires. With some effort, I got it to fit behind the h/u in my car

Installed in MINI Cooper S Convertible

Written By Ron, Cary, NC on Monday, March 17, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This SWI-RC does the trick! I installed it in my 2005 MINI Cooper S Convertible. But keep in mind, it is VERY important to follow all of the instructions when installing this in the MINI. At first, I had some issues, but this is because I tried to take a short cut. But it all worked out, thanks to Crutchfield's tech support personnel. The issue was that in the instructions, it tells you to locate the wire in the steering column and cut it there. I found the same wire at the wiring harness, but this did not work properly, because MINI/BMW has a K-BUS, and the wire at the head unit wiring harness gets converted from analog to digital somewhere along the way, and you need to pick up the wire in the wiring harness in the steering column where it is still analog. It now works perfectly! Thanks Crutchfield for your help!
Pros:
Give me full functionality of my audio controls on the steering wheel. Works with little/no delay.
Cons:
Will not work with the phone nor RT buttons if your MINI has handsfree/Bluetooth buttons on the steering wheel. Mine does not have these, but definitely worth noting for those who have a 2006+ model year MINI.

Easy install

Written By Artemis, Portsmouth, VA on Wednesday, March 05, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this so I could keep my SWC when I replaced my radio and was able to wire this myself with a little help from y brother. Since I had to wire it to both the radio and my aftermarket radio interface also had to be wired to the radio we had to fit 3-4 wires together for almost everything. We did not soder like the directions stated; we actually used heat shrink with perfect results.

The programming was only difficult because I overlooked a part of the directions. Once I saw my mistake and was able to correct it the SWC worked just fine.
Pros:
Easy to install and program.

Pros:

Cons:
Connection to the radio is slightly confusing/unclear. Incompatible with Blaupunkt Toronto 420 BT.

PAC SWI-RC

Written By Anonymous, Harrisonburg, VA on Friday, February 07, 2014

I bought this to connect an aftermarket KDC-X597 with my newly purchased 2008 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport. The installation instructions were a little confusing but a phone call or two with the great people at Crutchfield sorted everything out.

The unit does the job very well. All the of the steering wheel controls interact flawlessly with my stereo. I was particularly pleased that I was able to program the buttons on my steering wheel for whatever I wanted-regardless of what they were meant to do when the car came from the factory. For example, I programed the "source" button to act as a "pause/play" button.
Pros:
Steering wheel buttons work great.
Cons:
Installation instructions are somewhat incomplete.

It works just fine, but sadly after I finished programming it all I found out that access makes one that is much easier to set up. I had to solder 150 ohm resistors to this, so the actual install was also a pain. That being said it works perfectly and I hope I never have to touch it again.

This item works great and has some flexibility as to what you want your buttons to do but more flexibility would be nice. Installation required tapping into some some wires in the vehicle, it would be nice if someone made wiring harnesses for these controls but I guess that is not really a fault of this product. I would highly encourage the purchase of posi-taps or similar product as stripping the middle of the wire and trying to solder that connection inside the vehicle is not very fun.
Pros:
works as designed
Cons:
installation could be easier

super plug and play, with minor programing. I did not want to change HU and not have the SWC, and this still allows SWC volume controls. what SWC not used is d/t the HU, not the interface. Pros:
easy to hook up, easy programming
Cons:
directions are a little sketchy....I had a few glasses of wine and was able to comprehend..... ;)

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you purchase an inclusive package with wiring harness from Crutchfield before adding the PAC SWI-RC, you will have most of the harnesses set up for you. This product was simple to install and program with minimal instructions. If you want to minimize the headache, I would download instructions from the user-friendly product website.
Pros:
Easy set-up, easy installation, simple to follow instructions (from website), harness was set up so the only work required is soldering wires and programming.
Cons:
Volume adjust settings are tedious. And I have all necessary steering wheel buttons programmed, but lost some functions due to the inability of programming the same button for 2 functions.

I have a 2011 f150 and this steering wheel controller doesn't work to well with it, because it doesn't have a band button, so the factory LCD screen gets suck on line in and you cant change it inless you mess around with the radio which sucks. The Pac website is great with instruction on installing it in your vehicle.
Pros:
plug and play, easy install.
Cons:
instructions that come with the unit suck. Programming it is also a little hard but once you figure it out its easy.

Easy to Install and Works perfectly

I've installed numerous car stereos over the years but this was my first time tackling one with steering wheel controls. This device made it very easy to install and program. May seem a bit overwhelming at first but a simple phone call to tech support helped confirm that I was on the right path.

Tested the controls before my final install and they worked perfectly. Piece of cake.
Pros:
Easy to install and program
Cons:

Works Fine

Written By Cvillain, Charlottesville, VA on Tuesday, July 30, 2013

It's pretty straight forward...my steering controls work fine. I don't know much about these, though. When I picked it up, the installer said, "thankfully these worked and you didn't lose any function." When I was buying my system, they said "do you want steering controls?" I said "yes" and they put this item on my list....Thankfully they worked, indeed...it would have been awkward telling them I'm not paying for it and standing there while it gets removed ;)
Pros:
It works
Cons:
can't think of any

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I rated this a 5 because it does what it's supposed to do, but the instructions take you all over the web to get things right. I got it done, and was even able to change one of my old control buttons on the steering wheel so that it "answers" the incoming calls--pretty neat! I didn't like the programming steps, but hey, it's a necessary evil. Great product, and it's great having my controls even with the aftermarket stereo (DDX790).
Pros:
Functional, worked right the first time, simple wiring
Cons:
Programming is stressful, have to seek out help from the internet for the right settings, etc.

Works but limited

Written By JonJ, Cincinnati, OH on Saturday, July 06, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this in a 2006 Toyota Tacoma to control a Pioneer AVH-X3500BHS. Don't even think of trying to install using the documentation in the package. Fortunately, there are vehicle specific instructions on the company's website. Even with those, you must still be able to identify resistors (provided in the kit) by their color codes.

Once you figure everything out, it does work but with a catch. The '06 Tacoma has an up arrow and down arrow on the steering wheel controls that serves double duty. It acts as Preset up/down for the tuner and Track up/down for the CD player. With the SWI-RC, you must choose one function or the other. It does not support more than one function for the same button. I confirmed this with the manufacturer. This caused me to have to remove my newly installed stereo and reprogram the SWI-RC. I chose Track up/down since that has some utility on pretty much every mode of this stereo.

After navigating these puzzles, it does work consistently well but with the above limitation.
Pros:
Works as advertised. All necessary parts (including a variety of resistors) included.
Cons:
Included documentation is unusable - must go to website and get vehicle-specific instructions. Does not support the factory configuration of my vehicle's steering wheel controls and this fact is not advertised.

Was a little difficult as there is no manual for my Forte. Tried to hook up and program with the harness connected to the Kenwood deck. Wrong. The right connector was buried a bit deeper under the dash. Did finally get it working and it's easier than punching buttons on the tiny Kenwood remote.
Pros:
Restores the steering wheel interface.
Cons:
Needed just a bit more detail for installation.

Product works well. It was a little tricky to install but being able to download the directions specific to my truck was good. I think some other products were able to be able to 'tune' what buttons do on your wheels and can have dual functions but I couldn't find one for my truck. At least this way, my wheel functions are working as they should and I have good tunes!
Pros:
Make my wheel controls work - safer driving!!!
Cons:
A little tricky on the electrical side

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Liked the fact that I was able to program my "next" button to answer my BT phone, and the "mode" button to hang up the phone. I would have liked to program more than one function into a button for the various head unit modes. ie, when phone is ringing, it would be nice to answer by hitting "next" button on my steering wheel, but when phone not ringing I would like to be able to hit "next" button to advance to next song. Online directions are not the easiest to follow, but the Crutchfield rep helped get me on track quickly.
Pros:
Able to program steering wheel buttons to do any function desired.
Cons:
You can only program one function per button. Expensive.

Happy With it

Written By BrianP, Michigan on Friday, June 14, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit was simple to install. The website has model specific instructions that are very well written. I would have had this installed in minutes instead of an hour if I would have read the instructions as they were written. The instructions for my car specifically say to connect the cars blue wire to the green wire and to connect the cars green wire to the blue wire. I repeatedly connected the blue to blue and green to green and cussed the manufacturer for having a bad product. I felt like a fool when I finally got it working.
Pros:
Works well, easy to install and program.
Cons:
Instructions do not have a note in big bold letters stating "do what it says dummy, not what you think it says"

PAC SWI-RC

Written By 2009 Sierra, Michigan on Sunday, June 02, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It seemed I received a defective unit. I had the PAC OS4 already so the installation for me was plug and play. Programming the SWI RC was easy once I got the rhythm of it. Don't wait 5 seconds as instructions say - when the LED goes out move on to the next function. Anyhow, everything worked but I would lose the programming after 20 minutes or so. Volume down would start muting the radio and the other buttons would not work. Then the programming would return. Response time with the buttons on the steering wheel were a little hesitant compared to factory but you get used to it..

I did get a replacement unit - Crutchfield was excellent on service and exchanging the part. I did not put the replacement unit back in the truck as I changed head units and no longer need the adapters.

With the PAC OS4 and the SWI RC the XM was never retained. Maybe I had something hooked up wrong but XM only came on when Onstar came on. Using the Source button on the steering wheel turned on the XM control on the DIC but XM never came on. But activate Onstar and XM would start playing. So, maybe it was me or the head unit I had at the time but XM never worked.
Pros:
It does retain most steering wheel functions. Hookup is easy if you already have the PAC OS4.
Cons:
Never did get XM back. Short latency when using the controls - not as responsive as factory in my opinion. But still better than nothing and you get used to how the buttons respond. Not a deal breaker in my opinion. It does the job and is better than losing the controls all together.

Only issue I have is programming sometimes is changed with bluetooth activated on my aftermarket model. Also with the Car in Accessory as opposed to on, the programming is changes. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have done a lot of aftermarket installs, but I was a bit unsure that this device was going to be able to bring my 2001 Saab and my Sony together, but it installed quickly and works perfectly, first hookup. Like anything read the instructions and read them twice. Watch the video online, pause it and play it again, but you will be all set. I probably would have put in this new radian sooner had I know it would be so easy to hookup my steering wheel controls.
Pros:
Works as promised quick install
Cons:
Programming a little tricky, had to do it 5 times (still only took 5 minutes).

Great product!

Written By Jacob, Ohio on Tuesday, April 09, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great product that is easy for someone with car stereo installation and soldering experience. If you have never done either, I would seek out some assistance. It's not hard, just needs someone who can solder resistors in parallel and series, and read/understand resistor color codes etc. The manual has most of the information I needed, but I still had to go to their website for vehicle specific wiring instructions. Be prepared before you start this install, it will save you some grief! Once prepared, install time was about 15-20 minutes.
Pros:
Gives you your steering wheel controls. Easy to program. Versatile program allows you to customize any button on steering wheel to any specific command (ex. Setting the power button to be used as "play" instead).
Cons:
Difficult to wire in for a beginner, some soldering involved on certain model cars. Other products out there that are more plug and play and will auto-program for similar price. Could have more functions for advanced steering wheels.

Works Great in 2001 Nissan Frontier

Written By Anonymous, NC on Monday, February 25, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The attached instructions seemed really complicated at first, but once it was understood what was being accomplished it was actually quite simple to install and program. The unit is fairly "universal" so you have to prune quite a few wires out of the harness for a clean install but once it was installed and working it functioned exactly the same as the original factory controls in a 2001 Nissan Frontier (when connected to a new Pioneer head unit). It would have been nice for Crutchfield to include an adapter plug to allow a no-cut installation.
Pros:
Works as advertised, pricing is slightly less than competing products.
Cons:
Instructions can be daunting until they are thoroughly read and understood.

In a Subaru

Written By Jo Jo, Damascus, MD on Monday, February 04, 2013

If you getting this for a newer Subaru, let me warn you. With the stock radio preset/track button works depending on what source you're listening too. If you have it on radio, you can tune or next preset. If it's a CD you can go to the next track.

This module isn't smart enough to do that. I just got off the phone with their tech support. It can only handle one function per button. So you have a choice, do you want to change radio presets or cd/ipod track changing, but not both.

Waste of money, the one button- one function should be made a lot clearer before you buy, especially in causes like this where it says it works for your car that has more than one function on a button.

Fail

Written By DL, Philadelphia, PA on Friday, December 28, 2012

I previous posted a poor review for this product and it was removed. 2 of these failed after several months. The manufacturer refused to respond to me, but Crutchfield replaced it twice. However, they did blame me for the failure. Saying I wired it wrong. They don't know how I wired it or tested the device. I'm sure this review will be deleted as well. BUYER BEWARE of Crutchfield and this device!!!!!!!!

PAC SWI-RC F-150 FX4 With Sync System

Written By Ed, S'port, LA on Monday, October 29, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Allotted space prohibits an in depth review. This product is poorly thought out and does not provide auto programming like competitors. The biggest problem with this device isn't its complexity but conflicting instructions between PAC website, SWI-RC device, and PAC FRD1 Harness. Also the use of identical vague terminology for different procedures. When you arrive at the point to actually program the steering wheel controls be prepared to be quick for a few extra seconds delay between steps will "time out" the process and nullify what you have done and force you to start the process over. The recessed program button further aggravates this problem. I would recommend having a second person to help with the physical requirements. Someone with small fingers or long nails would be a great help.
Pros:
It will work
Cons:
Eons behind competition with technology. Instructions conflicting and use of identical terminology for different procedures. Excessively recessed "program" button.

Written By Ray, western pa on Monday, October 22, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easiest install ever! When you get it go to the website that's on the yellow card in the box. The paper instructions are useless and confusing. The website has easy to follow instructions for you. One thing that is nowhere that will stump you if installing on an 06 ram with the infinity system in it. You need to connect blue wire with a white stripe to the remote/amp turn on wire from the head unit. On my kenwood both were same colored. I had to call crutchfield tech support to figure that out.
Pros:
Full function, no programming, super easy install.
Cons:
Paper instructions suck, use the website provided in the box...that is spot on and easy to follow.

Good unit, just watch the instructions

Written By ChrisM, Westfield, MA on Tuesday, September 18, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit is complete; right up to the uber fine point type set on the instructions and settings documents, which by the way are very complete and not entirely accurate. I installed the PAC adapter in my 2011 Silverado and the connector for the SWR had a tag that read "Wired for #2 Setting" or something to that effect. When I looked up my truck in the document included with the SWR module it said I needed to use Setting #1 which entails cutting the brown wire. Setting 2 has both wire loops connected. Gave it a shot with both settings and found Setting #2 was correct. When you have conflicting instructions you have rework or you have a delay; the time it takes to phone a friend. Either way it's really inconvenient. That said, the unit delivers completely. Not really hard to set up and program. Recommend not trying to install in the dark and for those of us in later years, recommend a magnifying glass and a flashlight. You have to set a small pot on the side to the number assigned to your particular brand of stereo. You'll need the magnifying glass and a flashlight to make out the teeny tiny arrow on the teeny tiny pot to know if it is pointed to the correct teeny tiny number. Thus, don't try setting this up at night in the dimly lit confines of your car. Set that before you start the install and it will be a few less trips to the tool box. So, bring a flashlight, magnifying glass, wire cutters, connector and tape (when you cut the wrong wire.)
Pros:
Really does work just fine.
Cons:
Conflicting directions and hard to see indictors.

This was a royal pain to program. It also has a sensitive ground connection. I used crutchfield's screw on posi connectors on the rest of my install, except for this ground connection which I had to solder. The paper instructions are not up to date and close to worthless you will need to go pac's website for instructions. When programming, when you program your last button just stop and let the unit timeout. I got it to work, but it is painful....3 stars because it works.

Cons:

This unit works well for the most part. There's a slightly longer delay than there was with my original headunit, but that can be expected. Wiring/Installing was a pain though. The instructions provided were horrible, and the online guide was nearly as bad. If it wasn't for Crutchfield tech support, I wouldn't have been able to install this myself.

The most difficult part aspect of my radio installation

Written By Anonymous, Pacific Northwet on Sunday, July 15, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a frustrating component to install. The supplied compatibility sheet was in a four point font. Web site is an awful lime on blue color and very difficult on the eyes. Instructions are computer generated and offer a pin view of the connector. They don't even try to tell you which color wires to splice, so one had to play with the orientation of the diagram to guess and then go in with a voltmeter. Very limited diagnostics - just the blinking LED.

Of the half dozen car stereo installations I've done, this is the most frustrating.
Pros:
Purports to work with a variety of makes and radios
Cons:
Web site instructions. Limited diagnostics. Kind of pricey for what it does.

Wonderful unit, but may need unique approach to program it

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Crutchfield advisors recommended this unit to connect the new JVC stereo I was buying to my 2004 Ford Windstar. Keeping the steering wheel controls was important to me, so I paid the $70 for this add-on. Installation was a breeze and very quick. Sitting in my garage, the unit was easy to program and tested fine. However, once I was driving, the unit stopped to control volume up/down (could still mute and change the source). I stopped in a parking lot and reprogrammed the unit again. While parked it worked fine, but when driving it wouldn't control the volume. On a hunch I had my passenger reprogram the unit while I was driving. That did the trick! The unit now works correctly whether I'm driving or parked.
Pros:
Very easy to install. I went to the manufacturer's website and got the exact wiring instructions for my van. The color-coded wiring diagram was super easy.
Cons:
The program button on the unit is pretty small, recessed, and hard to push with a finger (probably by design). I had to reprogram the device while the car was in motion so that it would work properly on my minivan.

The directions say to connect the yellow wire to the ground wire in my system. That sounds incorrect to me. Wouldn't that connect the positive battery terminal to the negative battery terminal? I'm for sure no expert. If anyone knows if this is a good idea please respond. My main goal on the DIY project is to not set my car on fire. Thanks, [ Michael  Feb 24, 2014 ]

  • I installed this in a MINI Cooper with similar results. I talked to the Tech a couple of times and tried all of his suggestions but was unsuccessful in getting the steering wheel controls to work. [ STEVEN   Feb 16, 2014 ]
