More flexible options for enjoying music throughout your home

The D1650 can distribute music from one audio source, such as a networked music streamer, to multiple rooms in your home. Or you can connect up to eight separate sources and play a different one in each listening room. Each of the amplifier's playback "zones" features independent left- and right-channel gain controls so you can adjust its output to fine-tune the levels of each speaker in your system. For music playback in more than eight rooms, you can daisy-chain multiple Russound amplifiers together.

Product Research

Features

16-Channel/8-Zone Amplifier: The Russound D1650 digital multichannel amplifier offers the features custom installation professionals demand while offering a lighter weight, smaller chassis and more efficient Class D power. The feature-rich design of the D1650 is ideal for the demands of distributed audio systems and is also compatible with our Russound volume controls. The D1650's sixteen channels are arranged in stereo pairs to provide discreet amplification and custom configurations for each of eight zones.

System Configuration: The Russound D1650 can be configured as the main amplifier for an audio distribution system or home theater system.

  • Distributed Audio: When used with an audio distribution preamp, each zone can independently drive one of several different sources by using each zone's individual line audio inputs, or a pair of zones can be bridged to create a higher powered zone.
  • Home Theater Application: The D-Series amp is even up to the rigorous demands of home theater applications, easily transforming into a powerful 160 watt x 8 channel amplifier (in bridged mode). You can also choose to individually un-bridge pairs for lower power applications such as Dolby Atmos or surround speakers. As an example, you could run a Dolby Atmos 7.1.2 system at 7 channels @ 160W and 2 channels @ 50W. Or, the remaining zone can be used for powering an additional area such as an outdoor zone.

Bridged Mode: Each pair of channels is bridgeable (independently), increasing the power output to a single speaker to 160 watts into an 8Ω load.

Ultra-Low Distortion: Ultra-low distortion output (relatively unheard of in other multi-zone amplifiers) allows for clean, undistorted audio even at high listening volumes.

Auto Sensing Zone Inputs w/ Independent Control: Each zone of the amplifier features a stereo RCA input. These line-level inputs are auto-sensing and will activate when an audio signal from a source is present. Each Zone input offers independent gain control for the left and right RCA channel. When used in Bridged Mode, only the left gain is used.

Bus Input & Output: The bus line input is a stereo RCA input that can be used to connect a single source to multiple zones. The bus line output is a stereo RCA output that allows passive passthrough of the Bus Input and can be used to daisy chain the source to other amplifiers in the system.

Speaker Outputs: The Russound D1650 multichannel amplifier is fitted with phoenix-style speaker connectors. The minimum speaker impedance is 4Ω for Stereo Mode and 8Ω for Bridge Mode.

Trigger Inputs/Outputs: The Russound multiroom amplifier features Zone 12V trigger inputs/outputs (3.5mm) and Bus 12V trigger inputs/outputs (3.5mm) for added convenience.

  • Zone 12V Triggers: The Zone 12V Trigger In is used to activate a specific zone. The Zone Trigger Out can be used to trigger other 12V devices. The delay and audio sensing are bypassed when the 12V Zone Trigger Input is used.
  • Bus 12V Triggers: The Bus 12VDC Trigger In is used to activate all zones that are using the Bus Input and disables other zone triggers or signal sensing on those zones when it is used. If the Bus Trigger In has 12V applied to it, only the 12V Bus Trigger Out will have 12V and the Zone Trigger Outputs will not.

Zero Hum: Advanced triggering options allow the amps to operate on demand. Apart from the obvious energy efficiency, there is no amplifier hum on your speakers when the system isn't in use.

Zone Indicator LEDs: The eight LEDs on the unit's front-panel correspond to the D1650's eight stereo zone amplifiers. The LEDs will illuminate blue when the amplifier power is on and a zone is active. The LEDs do not illuminate when a zone is off.

Protection Circuitry: A robust protection circuit provides efficient, safe and reliable operation under extreme conditions and protects each amplifier output channel. Russound's resilient protection circuit maintains safe and dependable operation in maximum performance conditions.

  • Thermal Protection: The amplifier is designed with special circuitry to safeguard the amplifier under a thermal overload condition. Thermal protection mode can only engage when the unit has been run at high volume for extended periods of time without adequate ventilation and/or when speaker impedances are below the minimum levels for the amplifier.
  • Short Circuit Protection: The Russound amplifier is also designed with special circuitry to safeguard the amplifier under a short-circuit condition. A faulty speaker can also cause a short circuit condition. The Zone LED will blink rapidly between Red and Blue when the Zone is in short circuit protection.
Note: The amplifier will auto-correct itself when the trouble condition has been removed. The amplifier will then resume normal operation.

Auto Standby: The amplifier will go into Standby mode when audio signal or trigger is not present, and after the minimum delay time has timed out. The amplifier consumes 0.5 Watt or less current while in standby power mode. Standby delay can be adjusted to either 5 seconds, 5 minutes, or 10 minutes by using the DIP switches on the rear panel. This delay is selectable per zone. When an audio signal is not present, the amplifier will automatically go into standby mode after the preset period of time.

Rack Mountable: The multichannel power amplifier includes a set of rack ears for rack mounting applications. The amplifier will take two rack spaces with the feet removed.

Optional Volume Controls: The  D1650 amplifier has been tested to work with all Russound autoformer-based volume controls (sold separately).

Q
The manual states that in order to use a D series amp with auto-former volume controls, refer to the Tech Tip on the Russound Portal (Page 6). Is there special setup of the volume control for this Russound Digital Amp?
gerald  Mar 04, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Gerald, and thank you for your question. Im thinking because Russound wishes that a professional comes out and does the installation they put that message in the manual. We have access to their portal, and all it stated on the volume controls is they recommend using a 100 watt rated volume control. Most volume controls also have dip switches to increase of decrease the impedance load. They just want to make sure you are using the right external controllers with their amps. of course if purchased thru Crutchfield, you will have all the needed support, right here.

Q
does it include a IOS app for managing zones volumes rather than in room volume controls?
bob  May 04, 2020

A
As far as I am aware it does not inter act with any app either IOS or Android..... unfortunately I was not able to interface with my Russound in room volume controls. My electronics knowledge was sufficient to creat my system using a PA amplifier for appox. 20 years until it finally gave up... I purchased the 1650 in hopes that it would be the perfect replacement but could not get it to match the speakers. Unfortunately also could not get help or return calls from Crutchfield. Found another multichannel amp from another source...so....the 1650 sits on the shelf un-used.

A
No there is no app. This doesn't connect to the internet to be cloud/Ip controlled
manuel  May 04, 2020
A
No. You set the volume for each zone once at the back of the unit and then you use the knobs in each room to adjust their volume. I use Sonos connect units for each zone, though, and the Sonos app allows me to adjust the volumes using my phone or Alexa, Google, etc
beatriz  May 04, 2020
A
I don't believe so. I paired it with a number of Sonos controllers and control it all through my Sonos app. Used the system to replace my Request IQ system that died. Very happy with the quality and control that the combination provides.

Q
Hello- I have an old Control4 audio distribution system I am removing and want to set up an easy to use audio distribution system that I can use. What components do I need to have? -- I have all the room speakers wired into a central location and a receiver-- I am confused with the various components as I need a volume controller along with the amplifier.
edwin  Aug 25, 2019
1 answer
A
I am sure there are multiple solutions that can solve your needs. Looks like a Control4 unit with their OS3 could work. I have a Russound system that is dated and I have an amplifier and their distribution system with wall units in the various rooms. I had to add another serial controller to get to control from my iOS devices. I would recommend you get an audio consultant to propose an easy solution or call Russound Tech support - they are extremely helpful.

Q
Can I Stand Russound D1650 vertically (terminal side up) permanently? Will heat dissipate properly?
david  May 07, 2019
1 answer
A
Shouldn't be a problem as long as the vents on the top and rear of the chassis aren't being blocked.

Q
I use the Russound D1650 to power zone 2 from my Onkyo TX-8160. On 7 of the 8 zones I am powering Polk MC80 in ceiling speakers with the Russound ALT-126R volume control. The system operates and sounds GREAT. i plan to use Zone 8 for my attached 20' by 40' 3-car garage with 9 ' ceiling. Would Bose 301 wall mounted speakers work with my system, or should I continue to use the Polk MC80 in ceiling speakers? Just looking for the best sound.

I do not know about those other items. I use the 301's by themselves. A stereo sound purist and like to hear exactly how they put the final mix together in the studio which appears on the recordings. 301s sound superb in all my estimations for what I need.
robert  Aug 08, 2017
A
I have a pair of 301s they have great sound and can Handel a lot of power , you can always move them to different rooms , or take them when you move , you can't go wrong with the Bose . I have 201s 401s and 601s so I am a big Bose fan

No
william  Mar 08, 2016
A
Jesse, this amp does not have an internet connection (WI-FY or Ethernet). The only controls on the unit are power and gain (screwdriver adjustment on the rear panel for gain). The unit can be turned on / off with a hardwired 12 volt signal or it can sense the presence of audio for auto on/off. No other control options exist. John
john  Mar 07, 2016

No, my Yamaha receiver Zone 2 runs through the Russound amp which turns on and off depending on the signal output of the reciever. I use the Yamaha app to control the system.
david  Mar 07, 2016
Q
How many speakers can be played off one zone?
ryan  Jan 02, 2016
1 answer
A
You can power up to two speakers per channel and that would give you two pairs per zone. I recommend calling an advisor on 1-800-324-9695 to discuss your setup and see if this will work for your setup and performance goals.

Q
What is the output power per channel with ALL channels driven at 8 ohms?
todd  Nov 27, 2015
1 answer
A
Russound does not have a published specification for all channels driven; just the 2 channel specs at 1kHz & 8 Ohms: 50 watts RMS. (80 watts RMS at 4 Ohms). While I know this isn't the answer you were looking for, I hope the information helps.
