Power for speakers and automatic source switching

Power for speakers and automatic source switching

Today's networked audio players, music streaming services, and remote control apps for smartphones and tablets have radically changed the way we experience music at home. You still need good clean power to drive your speakers, but you probably don't need a traditional receiver with a lot of buttons to push. Maybe all you really need is a smartly automated amp like the Russound P75.

Connect one music component as your primary source, and it will activate the amplifier when it sends out an audio signal. The amplifier returns to standby mode when the audio signal ceases. Your secondary audio source takes over automatically when there's no signal coming from the primary source. There's no need to manually switch inputs.

Say you have a network audio player, such as a Sonos Port, connected to the primary input. Any time you fire up the Port, your P75 turns itself on and feeds the music to your speakers. Because the P75 has two sets of speaker outputs, you could be listening in the den, the kitchen or wherever you chose to install your speakers. Because you control the Sonos Port with a wireless controller or smartphone app, it doesn't matter where you put it. The Port and the P75 could be out of sight in a utility closet or cabinet.

You might connect an old-school music source like a CD player to the secondary input, and enjoy it whenever you're not using your Sonos Port. When a CD stops playing, the P75 will automatically switch to standby mode.

Product Research

Features

Dual Source Power Amplifier: The Russound P75 is a 2-channel dual source power amplifier with auto-source switching. It features two audio line inputs with a loop out to another zone, receiver, or device from Line 2 source. This amplifier can be used for power upgrades in specific zones, for speaker selector, or volume control systems.

Class A/B Design (Bridgeable): The Russound P75 is a Class A/B amplifier rated at 75 watts per channel into 4-ohms, and 60 watts into 8-ohms. With the Stereo/Bridge Mono switch in Bridge Mono position, both amplifier channels are combined for a higher powered mono output. In Bridge mode the P75 is rated at 160 watts of power into a single 8-ohm load.

Dual Source w/ Auto-Switching: The P75 has dual source capability. If two sources are used, connect the source you want to listen to most of the time to the Line 2 (secondary) input and the source you listen to less constantly to the Line 1 (primary) input Whenever the Line 1 (primary) source becomes active, that signal will take priority over the distributed audio signal on the Line 2 (secondary) input. The signal remains active but not heard on the Line 2 input, and once the Line 1 audio signal is muted or turned off , the P75 will automatically switch back to the Line 2 (secondary) audio signal.

Front-Panel & Rear-Panel Controls: On the front-panel of the P75 are Power, Speaker A/B, Volume, and Balance controls. On the rear-panel are Stereo/Bridge, and Auto On/Manual controls.

  • Power On/Off +Auto On: The P75 amplifier can be turned on manually or automatically by setting a switch on the back panel. For manual power on or off , press the Power button on the front-panel. For automatic power on, set the switch to Auto On, and place the front-panel power button in the "On" position. When music is sensed on either input RCA connector, the amplifier's signal sensing sends a command for it to power on. Once the signal ends, the amplifier turns off.
  • Volume & Balance Controls: You can adjust the speaker output volume, as well as adjust speaker output balance between right and left channels
  • Speaker A/B Switch: You can select speaker pair A (main) or speaker pair B (auxiliary) for audio output. You can use speakers A and B together, as long as the speakers are at a minimum 8-ohm impedance.
  • Stereo/Bridge (Mono) Modes: In Stereo mode the amplifier sends separate power and audio signals to the left and right channels. In Bridge (Mono) mode both the left and right channels are combined for a higher power mono output; the minimum impedance for the total load connected to a pair of channels in the bridged mode is 8-ohms.

Stereo RCA Inputs/Outputs: The Russound P75 amplifier features two stereo analog RCA inputs (Line 1/Line 2) to connect up to two analog audio devices. There is also a stereo analog RCA output to send the amplifier's Line 2 input to another zone amplifier.

Binding Post Speaker Terminals: The P75 amplifier is fitted with eight binding post speaker terminals and can accommodate up to two pair of speakers. You can power "A" speaker only, "B" speaker only, or both "A & B" speakers. When driving a single pair of speakers the amplifier can handle 4-ohm speakers in Stereo mode, or a single 8-ohm speaker in Mono mode. When driving both "A & B" speakers the amplifier can handle a minimum of 8-ohm speakers. The binding post terminals will accept bare wire (16-12AWG), pin-connectors, and banana plugs (single or dual)

Unswitched AC Outlet: The P75 amplifier has a built-in outlet on the back panel. This 120 VAC outlet provides 400W unswitched power for a device such as a small powered subwoofer. This switch provides power as long as the P75 is plugged into an outlet, whether or not the unit itself is powered on.

Protection Circuitry: The Russound P75 dual source power amplifier employs protection circuitry to safeguard against short circuits and over-heating.

  • Short Circuit Protection: Special circuitry has been designed into the amplifier to safeguard under a short-circuit condition. A faulty speaker can also cause a short circuit condition. If this fault condition occurs, turn off the amplifier and check speakers for short circuit conditions when appropriate.
  • Thermal Protection: The P75 amplifier is designed with special circuitry to safeguard the amplifier under a thermal overload condition. Thermal protection mode will only engage when the unit has been run at high volume for extended periods of time without adequate ventilation and/or when speaker impedances are below the minimum levels for the amplifier. In thermal protection mode the amplifier will automatically stop output. If this fault condition occurs, turn off the amplifier.

Mounting Options: The P75 amplifier can be placed on a shelf in an equipment rack, or on a table or cabinet. Make sure there is enough clearance around the amplifier for proper ventilation. The rear-panel should have approximately 5.125" of clearance, while the front-panel should have about 2.4375" of clearance. Both side of the amplifier should have around 0.9375" of clearance and the top should have 8.25" of clearance for proper ventilation.

denon avr 1603, will this amp work on this receiver?
chris  Sep 22, 2023

Greetings Chris. Thank you for your question. The Denon AVR-1603 does not have any preamp outputs. If you are looking to add more speakers than the 5 the Denon can run now, your out of luck. Your at its max now. Not sure what you plan is, but you can contact one of our advisors at 800-324-9694 to discuss your needs.

Q
Any idea on how this amp would work with a pair of 6 ohm speakers, how much power?
leo  Oct 01, 2021
2 answers
A
When this is not being used in bridged mode, each amp channel can support as low as a 4 ohm load. The manual does not specify the watts output with 6 ohm loads but it does seem likely that it would output 67.5 watts per channel
jason  Oct 05, 2021 (Staff)
A
This amp is rated for 8 ohms. You perhaps could use it at 6 ohms with the dial (gain) pulled down but with this setting on the front it could be tempting to crank it up and forget. I've got 4 Russound amps and all are bridged to run one speaker each. I'm happy with them but have made certain to use the recommended speakers. 4-6 ohm speakers on an 8 ohm amp could cause it to overheat. Some amps can compensate. Great thing about Crutchfield is if they can't answer they'll find out or suggest who you should ask.

Q
Can I use output from my desktop computer as an input for the amplifier?
zvar  Jan 15, 2021
1 answer
A
Yes. You can use a 3.5mm to dual RCA cable to connect the PC output to the amplifier input. Plug the 3.5mm end into your PC (as if it were headphones) and then run it to the Input jacks on the back of the amp. I bought a suitable cable on Amazon for a few dollars. Hope this helps!

I hit the wrong key in my first attempt to answer your question. Sorry, I'll be more careful. I use the amp as a substitute for crappy TV audio. It is wired directly to my DVR. I can now understand the dialog from TV shows much better. However, I have no way to measure power output. But I bet the manufacturer does. Have you considered asking them?

Q
Can I use this amp with two 4 ohm speakers and two 8 ohm speakers? I have speakers in my living room and bedroom and one pair is 4 ohm and the other is 8 ohm.
maestrogoetz  Apr 29, 2020
1 answer
A
Hello, This is what I was able to find from the manufacturer and since you are running them independently (4ohm for one set and 8ohm for the other) I believe it should work fine. The minimum recommended impedance rating for connected speakers for this amplifier is 4ohms. Most home speakers have a nominal impedance rating of 8 ohms; speakers rated at 4 ohms or lower represent more of a challenge to your amplifier.

Q
How many seconds is the delay for the "auto on" function?
mark  Feb 28, 2020

Its supposed to turn on as soon as audio is sent through the cable to it. As for the official time from when it turns on to playing audio, that I don't have and couldn't find in any documentation for it on our site or on Russound's site. I recommend giving them a call on 603-659-5170 to see if they have that information.

wayne  Jul 12, 2018

This is only an amplifier. If the pre amp only has 5 channels, this will be of no use. 1050 is a pre/amp set up and doesn't need an additional amp. In any case, this particular amp is awful. If you want an affordable 2 channel amp for the onkyo one.

rod  Apr 07, 2018
A
No. The unit has a relay inside that clicks back and forth between sources by sensing the signal. If the primary source has signal it will play. If the primary signal stops, and there is a secondary signal, the unit will sense the signal on the secondary input and switch to the secondary input. If both sources are running, the unit will only play the primary source.

Q
If i want to run 4 speakers Mono, can i simply bridge the amp, then run all 4 speakers off the bridged speaker output? ie. group the speaker wire together and just connect to the mono connection?
lee  Jun 22, 2017
2 answers
A
While the amp is bridgeable, it requires a minimum 8 Ohm impedance so, no, you would not be able to connect 4 speakers in parallel to the bridged channel. If the speakers are conventional 8 Ohm, the best option is to use the amp in stereo mode and connect the pairs to the A/B speaker outputs provided.
ryan  Jun 29, 2017 (Staff)
A
I only use it in the stereo mode. Works great. The manual lists doing the following for bridging. You need to select "Bridge mode" on the back. Connect Speaker wire (+) to the SPKR A Right (+) & Speaker wire (-) to the SPKR B Left (+). Keep load to 8 ohms total.

Q
I have this amp in my study connected to 2 stereo speakers (A) and a sub (B); the audio source is my desktop PC. The amp switches off when it doesn't detect any sound from the source. This would typically be ideal but extremely annoying when it happens while watching a video with a 3 or 5 sec timeframe during which there's no ongoing conversation or sound in the video. I played a movie and the amp kept switching off/on/off/on ... (you get the point). Is this typically, can the switch delay be extended, do I have a defective amp? Thanks!
ife  Feb 10, 2017
3 answers
A
Check the auto-on switch on the back of the amp. In the auto-on position it will turn the amp off whenever there is no signal. In the auto-off position the amp is turned on and off solely by the front power switch. This should cure your problem but of course you have lost the auto feature. I know of no way to change the delay built into the auto function. I have two of these amps installed on a large yacht driving outside ceiling speakers and have had no problems in two years but we do operate in manual. Hope this helps.
dwight j  Feb 11, 2017
A
The P75 amplifier can be turned on manually or automatically by setting a switch on the back panel. For manual power on or off, press the Power button on the front panel. For automatic power on, set the switch to Auto On, and place the front panel power button in the "On" position. When music is sensed on either input RCA connector, the amplifier's signal sensing sends a command for it to power on. Once the signal ends, the amplifier turns off. Recommend you set power setting on back on unit to "manual."
hugh  Feb 11, 2017
A
I think there might be a slider switch on the back of the amp where you can select whether the unit automatically turns on/off by detecting a signal or just leave the unit on when the power switch is on.

Q
8 ohms. If I use a switch A as bridge mode with 160 watts can I use switch B as bridge mode as well to get 160 watts? What if I connect switch B to two individual speakers, can I get 60W each along with 160W bridge mode from switch A?
masahiro  Oct 24, 2015
1 answer
A
If you bridge the amp you'll get 160 watts into a single 8-ohm load. You can use an external switcher to alternate 160 watts x 1 between your A/B speakers, but you can't have the amp run in 2-channel output for your B speakers if it's bridged.

I've been looking for an Auto-Power on Power Amp to provide the extra " juice" for the Rear Speakers( 6 and 7) and the B remote speakers ( through a Russound Switch Box) connected to my Onkyo TX-NR809 Receiver. What do you all think ?
gil  Sep 14, 2015
2 answers
A
There are no speaker inputs only RCA in. You will not be able to connect rear surround (or b speaker out) unless your Onkyo has RCA out for surround. You can hook remote speakers if your Onkyo has a zen 2 RCA Out.
michael  Sep 15, 2015
A
It is a good amp and well priced. Just be aware that there are not separate volume controls for A and B, so you would just have to switch A and B on | off depending on what you want to listen to. Russound does make an in-wall volume controller that would allow you to separately control volumes of A and B.

I think the switch is used to combine both A and B amps to drive a stereo speaker. Not to take a mono input and change it. You can read the users manual online at Crutchfield.
michael  Jun 08, 2015
A
I think you would need an rca y-adapter to feed both L-R channels on the amp but it should work. It will amplify full range in mono.

Q
Will this amplifier work to run 4 single (MONO) speakers in different rooms or just 2 stereo zones? The description makes it sount like the MONO selection is for a single speaker load only.

A
Hello Daniel, The mono is designed for sub woofers when more power is needed. When channels are bridged (bridging is explained in manual) it increases output. You can have more zones by using cable splitters. If your prefer mono, you can combine left and right channels (4 wires) to the same speaker. If you do choose mono, make sure to combine both red wires and both black wires before attaching to speaker post. Good luck with your system.
