Features

Overview: The Russound SS-4.2 Speaker Selector allows you to switch up to four speaker pairs connected to a stereo amplifier. Each pair of speakers can be turned on or off through individual front panel switches. It provides switchable built-in impedance matching, or can be used with impedance matching volume control. The SS-4.2 is designed for use with 8-ohm loudspeakers.

Impedance Matching Protection: When used with multiple speaker pairs, the impedance matching circuitry lets you operate the system safely with automatic overload protection. When connecting more than one pair of 8 ohm speakers to the speaker selector, the rear panel impedance switch should be placed in the "In" position. If using impedance matching volume controls (such as ALTx-2 or LPTx-2), the switch should be in the "Bypass" position.

Amplifier Requirements: When using internal impedance matching (switch set to "In") a 4-ohm stable amplifier is required. When using external impedance matching volume controls (switch set to "Bypass"), a 4 to 8 ohm stable amplifier may be used. You should use only the Amplifier "A" speaker outputs when the SS-4.2 is used. "B" speaker outputs should not be used.

Connections: The SS-4.2 features spring clip speaker terminals that can accommodate up to 12-gauge wire. For most applications, stranded 16-gauge speaker wire is recommended. For runs of over 100 feet, 14-gauge is recommended, while 12-gauge can be used for runs of up to 200 feet.

Performance: The speaker selector is designed for use with amplifiers with a power output of up to 100 watts per channel RMS (200 watts per channel peak. The frequency response is 20Hz to 20kHz (+/- 0dB).

Room Labels: The SS-4.2 comes with a sheet of non-adhesive room labels which slide into a groove in the front panel. A total of 52 labels and 8 blanks are included.

Q
Can I play all 4 sets of speakers at the same time or does it only play one pair?

A
You can play any combination of the speakers at the same time.

Q
I have a Sony STR-DN1080 Receiver, (6ohm, if I read the manual correctly), (2) Polk R700 (8ohm impedance), and (4) Polk Audio Atrium4 (8ohm impedance) speakers. (2) each of the (4) Atrium4's are wired together to form (1) speaker connector wire. Will this speaker selector work?
james  May 22, 2022

A
Yes this should work. You can wire up to 8 speakers to it and the impedance will protect and make the 8 a pair.

I have a Denon Receiver and four Polk outdoor speakers. The speaker selector works great.

Q
I have a Crown 2002 xTi2 series amp, Two 201 Bose and Two 901 Bose speakers. Will this product work for me?

A
I think it will. I have mine set up to two Bose external ( outside on the patio ) and a preexisting in home system plus some custom speakers I had made 20 years ago. All running through a Denon amp. It works fine.

Q
I have 3 pairs of speakers; each set has different resistances (3 ohm, 5.5 ohm and 12.8 ohm), would this selector work for my application? Any input would be helpful, Thank you!
shopper  Dec 31, 2020
1 answer
A
I think this would work because you are plugging each set of speakers into a separate resistance port. Each button on the front of the unit controls that particular set as an On & Off button.

I have a 50 watt per channel NAD C 320BEE Stereo Integrated Amplifier. Older model. Will this work with that?

I've installed many of these for customers. You will have no problem and Russound is a great brand.

I am using this to connect my Outlaw RR2160 (2x110wpc at 8 ohms/2x165wpc) receiver to multiple sets of speakers. Should the impedance matching switch be set to "IN" or "BYPASS?"

I have 4 ohm and 8 ohm speakers I want to hook to my Heos Amp. Will this device allow me to do that? All are outdoors
wardman  Jul 02, 2016

A
Yes, you can mix impedance with no issues. I am currently doing that and I believe the product information says the same.
mark  Jul 05, 2016
A
I have it tied into a Bose system with varying ohm speakers set up indoors. Actually, been thinking about getting another one for outdoor setup too.
glenn  Jul 04, 2016
Q
Does this switch only turn off a pair(s) of speaker or can I run speakers at different volume levels? I want to run speakers on deck half as loud as by the pool.
justin  Mar 11, 2016

A
It only switches them on and off, no volume control.
kevin r  Mar 12, 2016
A
The controls do not allow differential volume control. Doubling the resistance to the pool speakers should halve the volume
brent  Mar 12, 2016
A
It can only switch the speakers on and off. However, you can use an external volume control. You can find the owners manual online which explains how this might be done. Search russound ss-4.2.
paul  Mar 12, 2016
A
It only switches the speakers. There is no volume control.
craig  Mar 11, 2016
A
on/off only no volume control.
brooks  Mar 11, 2016
A
It is just on and off. No volume control. If you can install RUSSOUND ALTX-2D 126W Volume Control knobs (or equivalent) in between this unit and your speaker runs and you can control volume independently. Works great for me on a 4-room system
todd  Mar 11, 2016
A
Is a basic speaker switch only. There is no volume control.
scott  Mar 11, 2016
Q
I want to use this product to hook up 2 pairs of 8ohm speakers to a single Sonos Connect: Amp. I think the amp is 110 or 120 watts per channel, and this is rated at 100 watts per channel. Will this product make sense for what I'm looking for?
matthew  Jan 03, 2014
1 answer
A
You will want to contact an Advisor by phone or online chat to discuss compatibility with your current gear. They will be able to pull up your gear and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you.
