The Russound SS-4.2 gives you flexible speaker-switching options for multi-room applications. It allows you to connect as many as four pairs of speakers and play them all simultaneously without damaging your equipment. Create a whole-house system so you can listen to music in every room. Impedance-matching protection circuitry ensures that your amplifier or receiver operates at a safe load.

All is well
The unit arrived as scheduled and in good condition. The instructions were clear and complete, and I had it up and running within minutes. I have two sets of 8-ohm speakers running off of a 65-watt/channel amp, and I can run both sets at moderate volumes without the protection enabled without issues. This isn't recommended but if you enable the protection you get a bit less volume. The only negative I have is that the manufacturer claims that the speaker jacks can handle up to 12-gauge wire. I bought 12-ga. wire based on this, but it is very hard to get 12-ga. wire into the jacks without some of the strands peeling off. I would not recommend using 12-ga. with this even though they say it can handle it.
Pros: Easy to setup and use, clean looking, works as promised.
Cons: Can't effectively handle 12-gauge speaker wire despite manufacturer's claims.
Replaced a niles unit because of upgrade of wire size. Buttons have a good feel. It's doing what I wanted .
Pros: Sturdy build
Cons: Speaker wire connection could be a little larger. Had to struggle to get 14 gauge wire fully in
Works exactly as advertised. I'm using it with my Sonos connect amp and two speakers in each the bathroom and gym room. I would definitely recommend it to a friend.
Pros: Buttons feel good and strong, Channel switching is smooth.
The product was easy to use and easy to set up. The online information helped me to understand which switch I needed based on the speakers I'd purchased. I didn't want to spend a lot and have individual volume controls in each speaker location, so this switch was perfect for letting me have speakers in multiple rooms, but without having to worry about speaker conflicts.
Pros: Price, ease of use, simple set up
Cons: Doesn't allow volume control of each room separately, but I knew that upfront and was my decision based on price.
Can select any/all the zones created. Works as advertised
Pros: Attractive, functional
Great product, fit the multi zone needed in our house to power garage, patio, and bedroom speakers. Love the labels as it gives the unit a customizable professional look.
Pros: Professional looking, custom labels
Cons: None as of yet
I was looking for a simple clean looking device to push audio to my garage and patio from receiver located in living room. Found what I was looking for at Crutchfield along with details on switch operation and how it functions. It is easy to install and functions exactly like it should. It allows you to choose all four zones or allows you to single in on a specific area to push music to. The built in protection is a plus as well!!
Pros: Clean appearance, Easy to set up, Functions exactly as advertised, Price for it's purpose.
Cons: Russound push in terminals are close in tolerance in back. I used 14 Gauge wire in the push in terminals and it was tight.
Purchased to replace a 10+year old RadioShack unit. Affordable. I have 4 rooms setup to run off the unit.
Pros: Intuitive to setup. Nice palette of labels to label each button. Instruction book diagrams easy to reference for installation options.
It fits my need perfectly. Connected speakers in four rooms to the unit and connected it to my receiver and now have sound in all rooms. I was worried I might have problem getting enough volume in all the speakers, but I could not tell the difference between connecting them directly and through the unit.
I combined this with the Onkyo TX-NR727. Works as advertized!
This unit is a MUST HAVE for driving a combination of multiple sets of speakers (in this case, four sets, a total of eight speakers) with differing impedances. The unit is attractive, easy to set up and use.....the labels for each switch are a nice added bonus.
Pros: Easy set up.
Cons: No remote controller is available.......it would be a major plus.
Product works as advertised. Who could ask for more?
Easy installation and worked well. I zoned my outdoor speakers. Worked just as advertised/
I am using the Russound SS-4.2 with a Russound X75 amp to push sound to 3 sets of speakers with excellent results. Set up is simple and straightforward.
Pros: Works as advertised
Easy to set up. Works as advertised. Great looking.
Overview: The Russound SS-4.2 Speaker Selector allows you to switch up to four speaker pairs connected to a stereo amplifier. Each pair of speakers can be turned on or off through individual front panel switches. It provides switchable built-in impedance matching, or can be used with impedance matching volume control. The SS-4.2 is designed for use with 8-ohm loudspeakers.
Impedance Matching Protection: When used with multiple speaker pairs, the impedance matching circuitry lets you operate the system safely with automatic overload protection. When connecting more than one pair of 8 ohm speakers to the speaker selector, the rear panel impedance switch should be placed in the "In" position. If using impedance matching volume controls (such as ALTx-2 or LPTx-2), the switch should be in the "Bypass" position.
Amplifier Requirements: When using internal impedance matching (switch set to "In") a 4-ohm stable amplifier is required. When using external impedance matching volume controls (switch set to "Bypass"), a 4 to 8 ohm stable amplifier may be used. You should use only the Amplifier "A" speaker outputs when the SS-4.2 is used. "B" speaker outputs should not be used.
Connections: The SS-4.2 features spring clip speaker terminals that can accommodate up to 12-gauge wire. For most applications, stranded 16-gauge speaker wire is recommended. For runs of over 100 feet, 14-gauge is recommended, while 12-gauge can be used for runs of up to 200 feet.
Performance: The speaker selector is designed for use with amplifiers with a power output of up to 100 watts per channel RMS (200 watts per channel peak. The frequency response is 20Hz to 20kHz (+/- 0dB).
Room Labels: The SS-4.2 comes with a sheet of non-adhesive room labels which slide into a groove in the front panel. A total of 52 labels and 8 blanks are included.

I had 4 more speakers to hook up to my Sonos:Amp and didn't want to spend a fortune. This was a good solution. [ Anne Apr 13, 2016 ]
Yes, you can mix impedance with no issues. I am currently doing that and I believe the product information says the same. [ Mark Jul 05, 2016 ]
I have it tied into a Bose system with varying ohm speakers set up indoors. Actually, been thinking about getting another one for outdoor setup too. [ Glenn Jul 04, 2016 ]
It only switches them on and off, no volume control. [ KEVIN R Mar 12, 2016 ]
The controls do not allow differential volume control. Doubling the resistance to the pool speakers should halve the volume [ BRENT Mar 12, 2016 ]
It can only switch the speakers on and off. However, you can use an external volume control. You can find the owners manual online which explains how this might be done. Search russound ss-4.2. [ PAUL Mar 12, 2016 ]
It only switches the speakers. There is no volume control. [ CRAIG Mar 11, 2016 ]
on/off only no volume control. [ Brooks Mar 11, 2016 ]
It is just on and off. No volume control. If you can install RUSSOUND ALTX-2D 126W Volume Control knobs (or equivalent) in between this unit and your speaker runs and you can control volume independently. Works great for me on a 4-room system [ TODD Mar 11, 2016 ]
Is a basic speaker switch only. There is no volume control. [ Scott Mar 11, 2016 ]
