Today's networked audio players, music streaming services, and remote control apps for smartphones and tablets have radically changed the way we experience music at home. You still need good clean power to drive your speakers, but you probably don't need a traditional receiver with a lot of buttons to push. Maybe all you really need is a smartly automated amp like the Russound X75.

Connect one music component as your primary source, and it will activate the amplifier when it sends out an audio signal. The amplifier returns to standby mode when the audio signal ceases. Your secondary audio source takes over automatically when there's no signal coming from the primary source. There's no need to manually switch inputs.

Say you have a network audio player, such as a Sonos ZonePlayer 90 connected to the primary input. Any time you fire up the ZonePlayer, your X75 turns itself on and feeds the music to your speakers. Because the X75 has two sets of speaker outputs, you could be listening in the den, the kitchen or wherever you chose to install your speakers. Because you control the ZonePlayer with a wireless controller or smartphone app, it doesn't matter where you put it. The ZonePlayer and the X75 could be out of sight in a utility closet or cabinet.

You might connect an old-school music source like a CD player to the secondary input, and enjoy it whenever you're not using your ZonePlayer. When a CD stops playing, the X75 will automatically switch to standby mode.

Product Highlights:

  • 10.4 lbs.

Features

Overview: The Russound X75 is a dual source 2-channel power amplifier. The X75 features volume and balance controls, as well as A/B speaker switching on the front panel.

Power Output: The X75 is a Class D amplifier rated at 75 watts per channel into 4 ohms, and 60 watts per channel into 8 ohms. Both amplifier channels can be bridged for a higher power mono output of 160 watts into a single 8 ohm load (The Stereo/Bridge switch on the back panel should be in the Bridge Mono position when bridging.)

Signal Sensing Inputs: The X75 can be turned on manually or automatically by setting a switch on the rear panel. For manual power, the front panel power switch turns the unit on or off. When set to automatic, the unit will power on when music is sensed on either RCA input connector. Once the signal is no longer detected, the unit will automatically shut off. Signal sensing inputs allow the amplifier to easily integrate with multi-room audio systems and home theater components.

Thermal Protection: The amplifier is designed with a special circuitry that protects the unit under a thermal overload condition. Thermal protection mode will only engage when the unit has been run at high volume for extended periods without adequate ventilation and/or when speaker impedances are below the minimum levels. For proper ventilation, it is recommended that the amp have a minimum of 8-1/4" of clearance above, 5-1/8" of clearance behind, and 2-7/16" of clearance in front of the unit.

Short Circuit Protection: In addition to thermal protection, the X75 also has special circuitry to protect the amplifier from short-circuit conditions. This can be caused by a faulty speaker or when speaker wires come in contact with each other. When this condition occurs, the amplifier will shut down until the short circuit is corrected.

Unswitched Outlet: The X75 has a built-in AC outlet on the back panel for powering a device such as a small subwoofer or an audio component. The outlet provides power as long as the X75 is plugged into a live outlet, regardless of whether or not the amplifier is powered on. The outlet is rated at 120 volts and 400 watts.

A separate exterior system powered by this little machine. Drives 8 8-OM porch speakers, 2 8-OM pool speakers (100 lf away) 2 aux BR speakers. Only wish I could control the Bass & Treble. A great buy. Love it.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works like a charm. The X75 is running as my outdoor amp off of a Denon AVR-X4000 on Zone 3. Right now there are two Definitive Technology AW-6500s installed under eave, with a single Niles volume selector. I used 12-4 CL2 wiring for the entire setup. Although I've only used the system for a maximum of 4 hours total (speakers should need an additional 16 hours to really loosen up), the sound reproduction is superb. The X75 has more than enough power to fill the backyard (1/4 acre total) with only two speakers. Although I could run 2 pairs, I think it's more than sufficient. The AW-6500 bass reproduction is better than I expected (not requiring an additional outdoor sub). I think the X75 was a perfect match for my needs

Pros: Pricing; ease of installation; auto-detect source; auto-standby

Cons: none

Great, simple amp

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought one of these for two living room music in-ceiling speakers, and it pumps out plenty of volume, with no issues whatsoever. Liked it so much I bought another for the outdoor speakers so that their main volumes could be different and my phone/iPad could be the only source with a common source volume. Cascade inputs are perfect for multiple amps with the sub the last component in line. Flawless and really simple. Auto-off works great, and my wife loves that she doesn't have to go find something to turn on, it just works. Heat doesn't seem to be an issue yet either, and I have these both high up in a closet. I would definitely recommend this amp.

My Amp is a blast!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My amp is a b;art Much more than I expected for the price. The separation and bridge option is very nice. I use it in my living room. The system I have didn't have the boost I wanted so this inexpensive addition moves my speakers quite well. It also provided plenty of bass that I did not expect. So rock on is definitely in my living room future.I'm used to really loud music Bigger amps and speaker so now I have it in my home.

Pros: Small, thin line, not complicated, and does not get to hot. Price is good.

Cons: Haven't found any yet.

Does the job nicely!

Bought two of these to output from TV and drive a pair of speakers/sub to create 2.1 systems. It works great. Turned off TV speakers and let this amp do the work. Unit will power up and go back to standby based on signal.

Pros: Just enough power. Auto on/off works great.

Cons: Nice if it had optical audio inputs and subwoofer pre-out if your application required it.

Simple is Easy

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very compact unit. Not too many bells and whistles, so it's very easy to hook up and use. I have mine hooked up to a flat screen TV with two sets of Bose speakers - one compact, one mid-size - and the sound reproduction, even at quarter volume, is great. I especially like the option to use one of two audio channels - or both together.

Pros: Multiple outputs, ease of use and installation

Cons: A slight hum when operating.

Great Addition

Written By Don K, Ohio on Tuesday, June 18, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Russound X75 is a great addition to my audio setup. I am using a Denon AVR-2113 which offers both a line-out and "second zone." Prior to the Russound purchase, I was using the AVR to power additional sattelite speakers using the second zone with limited success. The sound was somewhat weak while pushing the limits of the AVR. With the addition of the Russound X75 using the line-out and a Russound SS-4.2 speaker selector, I am able to push sound to three sets of speakers on the outdoor deck and another set of speakers in an upstairs bedroom. The sound level and quality is clear, crisp, full and more than I anticipated. I have yet to increase the volume past 50% fearing my neighbors will "enjoy" a little too much of my music. Set up was very easy. The component itself is built solid with simple design. My configuration leaves me the option to add yet more speakers (with the addition of another speaker selector.) Listeners have commented that it almost sounds better outside than inside!

Pros: Set up is simple. The component itself is well made with great design and functionality.

Cons: None as of yet.

Perfect for powering second & third zones of speakers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very happy with this power amp. I use it to power my patio speakers as well as some in my game room. I feed it with a Sony A/V reciever and it works great. I love the ability to select either zone or both, an the separate volume control.

Pros: Easy to use, easy to set-up.

Cons: I did have to return my first unit for a replacement because the speaker buttons didn't work right. Crutchfield made this easy and the new unit worked as it was supposed to. Otherwise, no cons.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I could not get the remote power on sensing feature to work. I bought the unit because of that feature. I noticed reviews on other sites also mentioned they could not get it to work. I called Crutchfield and they were very nice and emailed me a return label. I was impressed on how easy it was to return. I would definitely buy from Crutchfield again.

Russound X75

Written By Bob, Mineola, NY on Tuesday, March 05, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent amp. I bought this to power a pair of Klipsch KB-15 bookshelf speakers and a pair of Polk Atrium 4's in my basement from my old Carver 6250 Receiver which has a bad amp from shorted speaker wires (moving equipment while on). Now I use the receiver as a tuner and preamp to select multiple sources. The Russound provides plenty of power and can easily be used for multi-room applications. The amp will provide a lot of flexibility as my devices and room configurations change.

Pros: Simple and functional as a multi-room or stand alone amp. Auto on/off when input is detected is a great feature which is perfect for large multiple room/speaker set-ups. Solid controls give a quality feel. Makes an excellent room amp with an iphone (itunes, iheart internet radio, etc) using a mini jack to RCA connector and a pair of speakers.

Cons: Speaker select buttons A/B take some getting used to. After you press both in you must press harder than seems "normal" on the A to reset (release) B and vice/versa. To select both you need to depress A/B simultaneously. Not a big deal, the buttons are very solid, just takes a few times to get used to it. No Bass/Treble controls or headphone jack. The specified ventilation space is also a lot if your equipment is stacked. Overall the pros outweigh the cons, good unit.

wow!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My McCormick amp of 18 years just stopped working - I don't have the money or the patience to get it fixed - I ordered the X75 because of the great ratings on many websites. I guess technology has caught up with the extremely heavy, high end amps. Besides the somewhat flimsy speakers connections, this amp is great. Played some Miles Davis from Europe 67 on it last night and I really couldn't see a big difference between my old $1000 amp and this one. Highly recommended and the staff at Crutchfield were great.

Pros: Great price, good sound - I use a high end preamp which may make the difference

Cons: Flimsy speaker connections

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Setting up my sound, I needed a system to power 14 speakers. I was led to these by the Crutchfield adviser, and bought two to hook up in sequence to power 8 speakers. They took some fiddling but they work. A couple things to keep in mind. They do get very hot, and need 8" clearance above for heat dispersal. Also, when installing in sequence, be sure that the "in" line on the first unit is into Line 2, since it will not send a signal from Line 1, to the "Out". It is counterintuitive, but that's why it says "Line 2 out" rather than just "Line out". That also means that if you have a second source into Line 1, the signal won't be transferred down the line, but will only send the one from Line 2. Also to have both "A" and "B" speakers play, you have to push both buttons down simultaneously. For example if the "A" button is pressed, and you press "B", the "A" button pops out and there will be no sound from the "A" speakers.

Pros: works, less expensive than some other options

Cons: odd wiring, gets very hot

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: The Russound X75 is a great choice but for 8 speakers you'll want to consider going with 2 of those to power those properly. It requires a pre-amp. [ JOHN  Feb 26, 2014 ]
The Russound X75 was a great solution for me , and a lot of bang for the buck Takes the"extra zone/room" signal from my Denon 4310 and powers the other zones...outdoor, and multiple indoor speakers very nicely , sounds great. The volumes of the satellite areas are controlled from multiple Niles impedance matching wall controls....very happy with it david m [ DAVID H  Feb 25, 2014 ]
You can put low level inputs into it, if that's your question. It is only an amplifier, nothing else. We use it to drive a second zone, where the second zone is not amplified coming off the receiver and it works great. [ MICHAEL J  Feb 24, 2014 ]
You will need a preamp. I bought mine to use in conjunction with an iMac, so iTunes, Spotify, etc. can play on my old fashioned, unpowered speakers. So the iMac acts as my preamp. [ STEPHEN  Feb 24, 2014 ]
No. I've never heard the cooling fan at all. I have two of these amps in a rack and they are very quiet. [ Tom  Jan 07, 2014 ]
It has a big heatsink you can see from vents on top of case. It either doesn't have a cooling fan at all, or has a temp. controlled one that only runs under heavy load... Ive never heard a fan running on mine... [ MIKE  Jan 07, 2014 ]
This is a very nice unit. I was not aware it had a cooling fan. Must be quite because I have never heard it and I'm am hyper sensitive to sound. [ SHARON  Jan 06, 2014 ]
I have had no noticeable concerns about a noisy cooling fan. I operate in a cabinet however; so amp is not in room where I listen to the music... [ JAMES J  Jan 06, 2014 ]
James, I bought two of the units and I have not heard the fan at all. Please keep in mind they are in a cabinet, but I am very please with the purchase. Hope that this helps. Clay [ CLAY E  Jan 06, 2014 ]
No. It's very quiet. I do find it's a bit under powered, but all in all a good buy at this price point. [ DAVID  Jan 06, 2014 ]
