About the Russound X75

Jim Richardson
Today's networked audio players, music streaming services, and remote control apps for smartphones and tablets have radically changed the way we experience music at home. You still need good clean power to drive your speakers, but you probably don't need a traditional receiver with a lot of buttons to push. Maybe all you really need is a smartly automated amp like the Russound X75.

Connect one music component as your primary source, and it will activate the amplifier when it sends out an audio signal. The amplifier returns to standby mode when the audio signal ceases. Your secondary audio source takes over automatically when there's no signal coming from the primary source. There's no need to manually switch inputs.

Say you have a network audio player, such as a Sonos ZonePlayer 90 connected to the primary input. Any time you fire up the ZonePlayer, your X75 turns itself on and feeds the music to your speakers. Because the X75 has two sets of speaker outputs, you could be listening in the den, the kitchen or wherever you chose to install your speakers. Because you control the ZonePlayer with a wireless controller or smartphone app, it doesn't matter where you put it. The ZonePlayer and the X75 could be out of sight in a utility closet or cabinet.

You might connect an old-school music source like a CD player to the secondary input, and enjoy it whenever you're not using your ZonePlayer. When a CD stops playing, the X75 will automatically switch to standby mode.

Product Research

Features

Overview: The Russound X75 is a dual source 2-channel power amplifier. The X75 features volume and balance controls, as well as A/B speaker switching on the front panel.

Power Output: The X75 is a Class D amplifier rated at 75 watts per channel into 4 ohms, and 60 watts per channel into 8 ohms. Both amplifier channels can be bridged for a higher power mono output of 160 watts into a single 8 ohm load (The Stereo/Bridge switch on the back panel should be in the Bridge Mono position when bridging.)

Signal Sensing Inputs: The X75 can be turned on manually or automatically by setting a switch on the rear panel. For manual power, the front panel power switch turns the unit on or off. When set to automatic, the unit will power on when music is sensed on either RCA input connector. Once the signal is no longer detected, the unit will automatically shut off. Signal sensing inputs allow the amplifier to easily integrate with multi-room audio systems and home theater components.

Thermal Protection: The amplifier is designed with a special circuitry that protects the unit under a thermal overload condition. Thermal protection mode will only engage when the unit has been run at high volume for extended periods without adequate ventilation and/or when speaker impedances are below the minimum levels. For proper ventilation, it is recommended that the amp have a minimum of 8-1/4" of clearance above, 5-1/8" of clearance behind, and 2-7/16" of clearance in front of the unit.

Short Circuit Protection: In addition to thermal protection, the X75 also has special circuitry to protect the amplifier from short-circuit conditions. This can be caused by a faulty speaker or when speaker wires come in contact with each other. When this condition occurs, the amplifier will shut down until the short circuit is corrected.

Unswitched Outlet: The X75 has a built-in AC outlet on the back panel for powering a device such as a small subwoofer or an audio component. The outlet provides power as long as the X75 is plugged into a live outlet, regardless of whether or not the amplifier is powered on. The outlet is rated at 120 volts and 400 watts.

Q
hello, can I use this product to connect my tv and a pair of speakers (zone 1) and a pair of patio speakers (zone 2)? thanks.

Hey Ray, Yep. I use this same amp to power 2 separate sets of speakers (1 on my deck & 1 in my dining room). Zone 2. Also have my kitchen on zone 2 but it comes directly out of the receiver. You won't need this if your only running 1 set on zone 2. Should be able to do that directly from the receiver. This amp is if you're powering more than 1 set on zone 2. Hope this helps! Crutchfield has excellent customer service if you have questions.

I think so, but it also depends on your primary receiver/amp. Many multi-zone receivers only have 1 digital zone and then the other zones sometimes only will output analog signals. You'll need to understand how your receiver accepts and outputs digital and analogs signals to be certain. I have speakers under the patio itself that are designated Zone 1 on my Onkyo receiver. I use the Russound amp on my back patio to power additional speakers in the yard as my Zone 2. However, I've only used the yard speakers for music (which has a digital source) not my TV, so I can't tell you if it works for the TV as well. Sorry this doesn't provide a clear answer to your question, but hopefully it gives you some additional pertinent questions to ask.

I think so if it has a 2 speaker out with an A & B switch. I don't have it any more because I needed more power for my new center channel speaker. I am going high end with McIntosh amp with 300w mono. Sorry if I can't help.
william b  Dec 11, 2014
A
Yes. However, they will play the same channel or sound at both points. There is no way to have two separate playing areas with different sound. Only one sound (music, TV, etc.) in two places.
sharon  Dec 11, 2014
A
Yes. The product has buttons for either set of speakers, or both. Just be sure to use the right gauge of speaker wire.

Q
Can I use this amplifier to power a passive subwoofer?
juan l lebron  Nov 25, 2014

A
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: Since that amplifier has no way to cut down non-bass frequencies, it should not be used to power a passive subwoofer. We have a few home amps that are specifically designed for use with passive subs, but I would caution the customer to be careful to match the power handling needs of the sub and its impedance to the capabilities of the amps listed- http://www.crutchfield.com/shopsearch/sub_amp.html##&nvpair=FFCategory%7C%5Brank10400%5DReceivers%20%2526%20Amplifiers&nvpair=FFSubcategory%7C%5Brank10450%5DPower%20Amplifiers If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.

Q
I have the Pioneer vsx820 multiroom receiver powering my main room and have the B room hooked to the Niles audio msa10 speaker selector which has 8 additional sets of speakers hooked to it for the rest of the rooms in the house. The volume on these speakers is very low likely due to the lack of power being distributing across them all. Will adding this amp between the Pioneer and the Niles solve this problem?

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: The Russound X75 is a great choice but for 8 speakers you'll want to consider going with 2 of those to power those properly. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.

Q
Is this an integrated amplifier or do I need to buy a pre-amplifer?

It requires a pre-amp.

The Russound X75 was a great solution for me , and a lot of bang for the buck Takes the"extra zone/room" signal from my Denon 4310 and powers the other zones...outdoor, and multiple indoor speakers very nicely , sounds great. The volumes of the satellite areas are controlled from multiple Niles impedance matching wall controls....very happy with it david m

You can put low level inputs into it, if that's your question. It is only an amplifier, nothing else. We use it to drive a second zone, where the second zone is not amplified coming off the receiver and it works great.
michael j  Feb 24, 2014

You will need a preamp. I bought mine to use in conjunction with an iMac, so iTunes, Spotify, etc. can play on my old fashioned, unpowered speakers. So the iMac acts as my preamp.

Does this amp have a noisy cooling fan?

No. I've never heard the cooling fan at all. I have two of these amps in a rack and they are very quiet.

It has a big heatsink you can see from vents on top of case. It either doesn't have a cooling fan at all, or has a temp. controlled one that only runs under heavy load... Ive never heard a fan running on mine...
mike  Jan 07, 2014

This is a very nice unit. I was not aware it had a cooling fan. Must be quite because I have never heard it and I'm am hyper sensitive to sound.
sharon  Jan 06, 2014

I have had no noticeable concerns about a noisy cooling fan. I operate in a cabinet however; so amp is not in room where I listen to the music...
james  Jan 06, 2014

James, I bought two of the units and I have not heard the fan at all. Please keep in mind they are in a cabinet, but I am very please with the purchase. Hope that this helps. Clay

No. It's very quiet. I do find it's a bit under powered, but all in all a good buy at this price point.
