Lowrance

Our take on the Lowrance iWay 500C

What's built like a tank, gives you directions to your destination, and entertains you on the way? Lowrance's iWay 500C portable car GPS unit offers state-of-the-art navigation capability along with 10 gigabytes of storage for your MP3 music files — that's enough space for up to 2,500 songs. Its 5" diagonal, dazzling color TFT display shows your position on a moving map with startling clarity, even in the brightest sunlight. And this powerful navigation tool is housed in an industrial-strength protective casing that's completely sealed to prevent internal corrosion, so it will guide your way for years to come.

Lowrance designed the iWay 500C for maximum simplicity, so you won't need an advanced degree in programming to find your way to the nearest gas station. You access all navigation and MP3 playback functions with five front-panel buttons and touch-screen controls. The unit switches between Music Mode and Map Mode, so there are no confusing multi-purpose menus.

Switch the iWay 500C into Map Mode, and take a look at what's been described as "the best screen in the business." Touch the screen to zoom in on your position or to check out a location on the road ahead. The hard drive contains detailed road maps of the United States and Canada, including over 2 million points of interest. You can instruct the unit to avoid toll roads or interstate highways. Make a wrong turn, and the iWay 500C instantly recalculates and gets you back on track. The 12-volt power adapter features a built-in speaker that broadcasts the navigation directions.

Switch the unit to Music Mode, and the iWay 500C will entertain you while you navigate. The package includes a USB cable and an AC power adapter, so you can download the latest and greatest music files (MP3 and Ogg Vorbis formats) from your computer before your next trip. For maximum sound quality, use the supplied cable to connect the unit to an auxiliary input on your car radio. The screen shows you play lists and folders in detail so it's easy to find the tune you want, and it'll entertain you with visual displays while the song is playing.

The package includes the GPS unit (with built-in antenna), a protective cover, an AC power adapter, a DC power adapter (with built-in speaker and volume control), a heavy-duty windshield mounting bracket, a patch cable (to connect to your car radio's aux input), an external antenna (for problem reception areas), a screen cleaning cloth, and a USB cable. Map updates can be downloaded from the Lowrance website.

Best quality graphics!

Written By Edmond, Boston Ma on Thursday, May 19, 2005

This unit has the best graphics of any of it's competitors, and that makes a big difference. It is easy to use and has a clear voice.

I love the fact that it redraws your route if you go off course.

Crutchfield Customer Review

The reviewer purchased this item from us, verified by the email address on the order.

The IWay is outstanding in almost all aspects. The graphic's are clear and easy to read in both direct sunlight and at night. The routing was perfect almost all of the time except for twice when it routed incorrectly. It built a route in the wrong direction from the waypoint. I could not get it to route correctly until I reset the unit and than it built the route correctly. I traveled over 1000 miles challanging the unit as much as I could. It re-routed whenever I got off course and was very helpful in a few instances when there was a detour and I was sent into back roads without directions for the detore. The voice on the unit is clear and easy to understand. The only negative is the unit five times shut down for no good reason. I was well into my travel and it turned off. I did turn it back on and it stayed on. The unit gets very hot to the touch which is not mentioned in the manual. The 10 gig's of music space is great. I loaded the unit with a few gigs of music and had more music than I could listen to on my trip. There could be more choices for picking music. I was able to use a cassette adapter and hook it up to the headphone connection on the unit. This was not mentioned in the manual. Over all I'd give this an 9 out of to rating. Made my trip enjoyable so what more could I ask for?

Lowrance iWay 500C

Written By David Burggraf, Fosston, MN on Sunday, April 10, 2005

This unit would be a Five Star if they fix a few of it's problems with updates. There is no way to manually enter wapoints in it. I have a ton of waypoints from my other GPS and I can't add them. The only way to create waypoints is either being at the waypoint, orusing the pointer to find it on the map. So if somebodie gives you coordinates it is impossible to enter them. The unit is also very sensitive to the power and if it gets less the the required 12v it will shut down and restart.
