Our take on the Universal® MasterControl™ RF-10

by Ralph Graves

The RF-10 from Universal helps you get control of your audio/video system. It lets you carry out even complex operations with just a few simple commands. With the RF-10 you can string together several commands into a one-button operation known as a "macro." For instance, when you want to play a DVD, a single push of a button turns on the right components, switches inputs on your TV, and starts playback.

A provided tutorial DVD takes you step-by-step through the simple setup process. The remote comes loaded with over 1,000 remote codes from different manufacturers. It's also a "learning" remote, so you can copy commands directly from your old remotes into the RF-10. And don't worry about having to reload all your settings if the batteries die — the RF-10 can retain its programming for ten years without power.

The remote transmits regular infrared (IR) commands to your equipment for line-of-sight control. It also transmits powerful radio frequency (RF) signals that pass through walls, floors and cabinets. With the optional MRF100B base station, you can control your components from anywhere within a radius of 50-100 feet.

Highlights:

  • transmits both IR and RF signals
  • 10 macro buttons (up to 50 steps each)
  • learns the IR codes from existing remote controls
  • pre-loaded with over 1,000 manufacturer codes
  • can operate up to 8 devices
  • 1-3/4" x 3/8" backlit LCD screen
  • illuminated keypad
  • retains programming without batteries for up to 10 years
  • requires 4 "AAA" alkaline batteries (included)
  • tutorial DVD included
  • weight: 7.1 oz.
  • 2-5/8"W x 8-9/16"H x 1-5/16"D
  • warranty: 1 year
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

Features

Overview: The RF10 universal and learning remote control is designed to operate up to 8 different audio/video components. The RF10 sends both IR and RF signals, making whole-house operation (indoors and outdoors, through cabinets, walls and doors) possible with the addition of the optional MRF100B RF receiver base station. The RF10 can be programmed to execute "macros," each with 50 commands.

Basic Setup: You can start setting up your RF10 using the Pre-Programmed Method, Pre-Programmed Auto-Search Method, or the Learning Method. The Pre-Programmed Method allows you to choose codes from the RF10's built-in library, which includes thousands of codes for different brands and models of remote controls. The Pre-Programmed Auto-Search Method is a way you can scan through the other codes in the table to find the right code for your component. Using the Learning Method, the RF10 can learn commands from your old remote controls one button at a time.

Pre-Programmed Codes: The RF10 is pre-programmed to control most brands of TVs, VCRs, DVD players, CD players, cable boxes, satellite receivers, TiVo hard disk recorders, DVRs, tape decks, multimedia PCs, XM Satellite Radio tuners, iPods, Xbox consoles, lighting controls, and other custom installation products.

Punch Through: In most home entertainment systems, the volume is controlled by a single device. In some systems, the TV speakers produce the sound, so you would use the TV device on the RF10 to raise and lower the volume. In other systems, a surround sound receiver and speakers combine to bring you the audio, so you would use the RF10's Audio device to adjust the volume. You can use SimpleSound to set the RF10's volume buttons to always control the sound in your system. That way, when the RF10 is set to VCR or DVD, the volume up, down and mute buttons will work without switching back to Audio or TV. The Punch Through feature is not limited to volume, and can be applied to channel selection, playback controls, etc.

MacroPower: The RF10 features 10 macro buttons, each allowing you to program up to 50 commands.

Erasing: You can erase an individual button with a learned command or a macro. You can erase an entire Device's learned command or macro buttons. You can also erase all your learned commands on all devices, or all your macros everywhere. If you really want a fresh start, it is possible to reset everything to the factory default condition.

Memory: The RF10 stores all of your settings in non-volatile flash memory. The settings will be retained without batteries.

Child Lock Feature: The Child Lock feature blocks all operations of the remote control.

Optional Expander: The RF10 transmits both IR and RF signals. By purchasing the optional MRF100B PowerBlaster, you can operate your equipment with the RF10 up to 100 feet away (through walls, doors, cabinets, inside or outside). The RF10 sends a radio signal to the MRF100B, which is a radio receiver. The MRF100B converts the radio signals to standard infrared commands and sends them out to components in the same cabinet space via a built-in front blaster.

Note: The RF10's radio signals will not control components directly. You must have an MRF100B to receive the RF10's radio signals.

Savvy Tech

Written By R, MI on Friday, December 21, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This a great remote. I have had it about 1 month. Nice features: 1) LCD component display. No more trying to remember which component you are controlling. 2) Learning feature excellent. This is essential since the 3 digit code only handles basic. Has a confirm good/fail LCD acknowledgement. I am controlling 4 remotes and have not found a command on the component remotes this device could not learn. However component remote commands are not universal, so you are faced with substitution designation. I would estimate 50-75 percent of the commands on the component remotes do not have a similar designation on the universal. So once you have things memorized on the universal you are good to go. 3) Macros are great but documentation is very limited. 4) Learning disc included essentially useless. I went to the manual after a few minutes viewing. 5) Eight button component designation is great. One button push is all you need and once macros are set up this can perform a multitude of steps. I find this feature better than the two step process on the more sophisticated/costlier remotes you have to scroll to find component then select. 6) I opted for the IR version which is standard. I have similar devices in more than one location so I did not want to control a device in another room by going through walls with the optional RF version. Also the neighbors are close enough that interference could be an issue.
Pros:
LCD Learning Macros
Cons:
Learning disc

Way easy to set up and use

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Getting this device out of its clamshell packing was way more difficult thant setting it up and using it! Instructions were simple, batteries included, buttons clearly labeled. Even I couldn't screw it up! I'll leave it to my kids to figure out all of the extra functions this magic wand can do. For now, it's running my TV, Cable, DVD, and Audio system perfectly.

low priced, excellent effort

Written By jen, toledo, ohio on Sunday, January 24, 2010

we have an RF receiver that had the origanal expensive remote stop working. the goal was to find a replacement to control the new HD equiptment( Blue Ray, TV, DVR) and do basic controls of receiver. tried a couple well known more pricey remotes but just wernt compatable like they said. this one hits the mark for half the price. :O) would have liked a couple more funtion keys but it was easy to program or reprogram keys for more precise controling. a deffinate recomendation.

great remote for the price!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

this is the best remote ive ever owned. ive dropped it from 8 feet multiple times. also last
night i got angry and threw it against the wall. it split into a few different pieces. i just picked
up the pieces and reassembled it and it worked like it did new. ive put this thing through its
paces and it holds up pretty good! im suprised at the quality put into this remote. the only
downfall of this remote is i never got the macros working right but, maybe thats just my fault.
but this thing is rock solid construction wise. i would highly recommend this remote its
cheap it works good and its built tough. great if you have kids that drop and throw remotes.

Partially Satisfied

Written By Charles, Pittsburgh, PA on Saturday, January 31, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have seven remotes including this one: TV (2), Cable (2), DVD (1), CD (1), and Bose Audio (1). My wife has much trouble with turning on TV and changing the input to the cable box to select the channel. We are in real need of a "universal" remove and I hoped this would be our answer. It is not the total answer. With this remote, I was able to enable her to turn the TV set on then select the channel on the cable box without remembering to change the input to the cable box which is helpful. If not, then the set goes into orbit and I am the only one that can recover the system. We truly need a remote that transparently handles all these units (or most of them) without using all our remotes to do so. There should be an industry standard on this mess. I have a separate table just to hold our remotes.

A Good Value

Written By Bill, Solon, IA on Monday, January 26, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the RF-10 in Dec 2008. In general I'm pleased with it considering the cost. It has eight device buttons, more than enough for my needs, and the backlight button is handy in a dark room.

I ran into the following problems with the manual: 1) The manual only has codes for devices made to the year 2006. 2) There are no examples of macros; 3) There are no examples of overall approaches to setting up the remote for configurations such as a TV with a DVD player, or more importantly, a home theater system. An outline of how one does common setups would be helpful.

I had the following problem with the remote: The SAT button can only accept pre-programmed codes up to 207. I wanted to use it for a device that required code 277. The display changes to ### when a number larger than 207 is entered. I suspect the other device buttons may have limits also, but I have not confirmed this.

Power Button Anomaly: The RF-10 has a POWER ON button and a POWER OFF button. Many devices to be controlled have a single power button that toggles the power off if it's on and visa versa. For such components, the power buttons on the remote might not do what is intended, depending on whether the component was already on or off.

Universal MasterControl RF-10 remote review

Written By Jonathan, Ringgold, GA on Saturday, January 03, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Even though I gave just four stars, I highly recommend the RF10 remote. Now, I can get the right entertainment system components turned on all at once with just one button, and that is awesome to me. Basic programming on the remote can be done different ways, but, for me, the best way was to program it by the "learning method", where you point your old remotes directly at the RF10 and punch a few buttons to get just the exact button set up on the RF10 to do what your old remotes would do. On this remote, "Macros" are an advanced programming feature where you can
push just one button, and the remote will turn on several different components all at one time. Now, with the Macros set up right, with just one button on this remote, I can get where I want to be with my entertainment system where it once took a few button pushes with several different remotes. Regarding the Macro programming, I feel that that owner's manual does not go into enough detail to show the order of how to really set up the Macros. There are only two small pages of information, and it took me quite a while to figure out how to set up the Macros. I would have given 5 stars for this remote if not for this problem. Everything said, I would definitely recommend the RF10 to any of my family and friends. (I told my brother-in-law about it with a big smile on my face.) It is a great remote.

I did it YOU CAN TO

Written By Mr. Fowler, Gadsden, Al. on Wednesday, October 15, 2008

When our tube type tv went off for the final time we called Crutchfields and got new Aquos Sharp 1080p tv, Onko SR700 surround sound, and already owned Sony Dvd . Made the upgrade to Direct Tv-High Def Sat. Receiver. I have had three strokes and have Alzheimers disease and every day things aren"t easy to do sometimes impossible. No way would i be able to remember how to operate so many remotes. But the Universal RF10 changed that . This remote handles every feature needed, easy to hold -read and simple enough for even me to use. We were even able to operate our Sears window air unit so today we ordered my wife her own RF-10. Thanks for such a great company as Crutchfields and for this easy and trouble free remote

I owe my life to this remote control

Written By Kemp in Houston, Houston on Thursday, December 06, 2007

It's simple: This. Remote. Saved. My. Life. My wife was going to kill me if I didn't stop bringing home new A/V toys with new remotes. When it got to the point where we had a new TV, a new Hard-Disk/DVD Recorder, cable box, and home theater receiver it got to the point where it was starting to get pretty confusing. Then we got a Tivo. With this remote I was able to program everything into it, and set up macros. When you want to watch the DVD press one button and it selects the correct input on the TV and receiver and turns everything on. Now it's so easy to run our system - I can't believe I didn't get one of these years ago.

It's very easy to program the remote, and easy to use. It has punch-through volume control, so the volume control operates the receiver volume no matter what source you're using.

Best $70 I ever spent on electronics. EVER.

All universal remotes sould work this well!

Written By brian, Wappingers Falls, New York on Thursday, October 04, 2007
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This remote is eight remotes in one... any one of the eight devices listed at the top of the remote can be used for whatever device you want. Setup is not hard at all and you get dvd to help you understand it visually. It has all the features you need and it can be used to control anything (i.e. celing fans,PS2 or xBox,PC,iPod and audio cassette decks) that uses infrared to be controlled and I when say anything if you have the infrared controller (old or new) so the RF-10 can learn the command keys the RF-10 will too.

1 question already asked

Can this RF remote control the RF on a Roku 3? [ Robert  Feb 14, 2014 ]
4 answers
  • I don't have a roku but Apple TV and it learned its controls no problem I am sure it could [ STEVE   Feb 14, 2014 ]
  • The Roku 3 uses both Blu-Tooth and IR. You can use it in the IR mode. It will need to be direct line-of-sight with the Roku player: It won't go through cabinet doors or through walls like a Blu-Tooth remote. And of course, the wireless headphone feature won't be a part of the universal remote. That feature is unique to the Roku remote. In my opinion, the RF-10 is a very intuitive remote control, both to use and to program. If you have access to discrete commands for inputs and power-on/power-off for your TV, surround receiver, cable box, etc., it greatly simplifies the operation of home theater system. It has some codes built-in to it, but not necessarily all the discrete commands you might need.. I was able to borrow a Logitech remote to learn the discrete commands from. Although the Logitech is ideal for finding and learning discrete commands from, I really don't like using it as a remote. I have several RF10's around the house, and several in the office. They're inexpensive, and they work great. Good luck with it. Let me know how it works out. [ KEITH   Feb 14, 2014 ]
  • I have not used the RF-10 with a Roku 3. I was able to program it to a similar device - Magnavox HD Streaming Player and it works great. [ ERNEST P   Feb 14, 2014 ]
  • I returned this model because it was too difficult to program and it didn't seem to work correctly. I replaced it with a Harmony Touch, which I love. [ JOHN C   Feb 14, 2014 ]
