Rockford Fosgate

Our take on the Rockford Fosgate Punch P1000-1bd

Rockford Fosgate continues to develop progressive sound technologies, aimed at producing a smaller amplifier with all the power and clarity you expect from a Punch amp.

The award-winning "Dynamic Thermal Management" 3-stage cooling system uses forced air to dissipate heat evenly across the amp and out through the heatsink for cooler internal components. This Class-BD amplifier combines the best features of traditional Class AB amplifiers with the efficiency of the Class D design for lower distortion and less power draw. Its smaller chassis gives you more installation options, without sacrificing wattage or audio quality.

The P1000-1bd mono subwoofer amp dispenses 250 RMS watts at 4 ohms, or you can wire your subs for a 2- or 1-ohm load to achieve higher power output — up to 1,000 watts. You can tailor the sound with variable-frequency low-pass and subsonic filters, and use the onboard EQ to add some low-frequency punch to compensate for your car's acoustics. An optional wired remote control lets you tweak the sound from the front seat for quick adjustments while you're on the road.

Features

Overview: With its super efficient Class-BD circuit topology, the Rockford Fosgate P1000-1BD assures maximum power output. Due to its dedicated low frequency response, this amplifier is optimized for mid-bass speakers or subwoofers only. The amplifier is 1-ohm stable (1,000 watts x 1) and will drive a pair of 4-ohm DVC subwoofers or quad-configuration of 2-ohm DVC subwoofers with ease.

Class bd Design: Rockford Fosgate bd topology is a revolutionary patented design, integrating a technology that is more efficient than typical class AB and has lower distortion than class D designs. Punch bd amplifiers are 75-80% efficient vs. 20-60% efficient class ab amplifiers. This means, more power from your amplifier with less drain on your vehicles electrical and charging system.

Cast Aluminum Heatsink: The cast aluminum heatsink dissipates heat generated by the amplifier's circuitry. The inherent advantage of casting provides a 30% improvement of cooling over conventional extrusion heatsink designs.

Dynamic Thermal Management (DTM): DTM Evenly distributes excess heat across entire amplifier heatsink.

DSM (Discrete Surface Mount): DSM utilize 1% tight-tolerances improving efficiency of the circuit, decreases cross-talk from other discrete components and lowers operating temperature. An industry-leading manufacturing process, DSM utilizes high-speed robotics, high-quality 1% tight-tolerance parts and large board traces. The discrete components are laser etched to meet a particular value and a very low tolerance. This lower tolerance improves the efficiency of the circuit, decreases cross-talk from other discrete components and lowers operating temperature.

TO-247 MOSFETs: The Rockford Fosgate amplifier use custom TO-247 MOSFETs. These have 60% more metal tab area for more power capacity, lower impedance and improved heat dissipation over traditional TO-220 MOSFETs found in many other amplifier. The MOSFET transistor is the best type of device to use when building a high quality mobile amplifier. The TO-247 has 60% more metal tab area and its unique, fully encapsulated design is capable of housing a silicon die (the heart of the MOSFET) twice as large as the TO-220. The larger die provides more power handling capacity. Additionally, the extra metal tab area ensures that no matter what size silicon die is inside, the thermal impedance will always be lower than in the TO-220 due to improved heat dissipation.

MEHSA3: MEHSA3 reduces MOSFET temperatures, lowers distortion, increases durability and prolongs the output device life span. MEHSA3 (Maximum Efficiency Heat Sink Application - gen. 3) is a proprietary process that yields up to five times better heat transfer than traditional FET mounting techniques, using the exact same components. A multi-layer insulated metal substrate operating with minimal thermal resistance spreads heat both downward and outward to quickly dissipate heat from each device across the heatsink. This process combined with Rockford's optimized heatsink designs, DSM (Discrete Surface Mount) technology and MOSFET devices, allows the amplifier to squeeze more watts per cubic inch from every output device as well as provide consistent thermal stability. The 3rd generation creates a dielectric layer between the ceramic topside and the aluminum base that retains all of the electrical isolation and capacitive coupling of the original MEHSA material increasing it's thermal conductivity. The higher power handling results in a 20% reduction in thermal impedance.

NOMAD (NOn-Multiplying Advanced Decision): NOMAD is an intelligent protection circuit that uses an analog computer to make real time decisions regarding temperature, voltage, current and impedance. The unit is protected without limiting sound output unless needed.

Power and Protection LEDs: The LEDs are located on top of the amplifier. A blue Power LED illuminates when the amplifier is turned on. A red Thermal LED illuminates if the amplifier overheats. The yellow Protect LED illuminates if a short circuit or too low an impedance is detected at the speaker connections. When any of the protection circuits engage, the amp automatically shuts down until the problem is corrected.

Controls

Internal Crossover: The amplifier features a built-in 12dB/octave Butterworth low-pass filter with a variable crossover point from 35Hz to 250Hz.

Punch EQ2: The Punch EQ on-board equalization circuit helps correct for acoustical deficiencies in the listening environment. This control is a narrow band adjustment variable from 0dB to +18dB at 45Hz with a Gyrator based Punch EQ that eliminates frequency shift with boost.

Infrasonic Filter: This 28Hz high-pass filter is designed to prevent frequencies below the audio range from being applied to the subwoofer from the amplifier. This infrasonic filter improves your subwoofer performance and power handling, particularly in vented enclosures.

Connections

Power Connections: The power and ground terminals are nickel-plated captive c-clamp wire connectors and will accommodate up to 4-gauge wire. An external 140-amp fuse (not included) must be installed on the power wire. If a wiring kit is used which includes a fuse with a value other than 140-amps, the original should be replaced with a 140-amp fuse. The remote turn-on terminal will accept wire sizes of 12- to 24-gauge. A Phillips-head or slotted screwdriver (not supplied) is required to tighten/loosen the terminals.

Dual Speaker Terminals: The Punch mono-amplifier features two pair of speaker output terminals so you can easily connect two 4-ohm speakers to the amplifier in a 2-ohm load configuration. The two pair of nickel-plated clamp wire connectors will accept 8-gauge to 18-gauge wire. A Phillips-head or slotted screwdriver (not supplied) is required to tighten/loosen the terminals.

Differential Input RCA Inputs: The amplifier features a pair of differential RCA input jacks for easy connection of signal level input. Differential input circuitry measures the voltage of both the positive (+) and negative (-) portions of the input signal, subtracting the voltage common to both conductors (noise); resulting in a cleaner signal. Reducing the noise on the input then improves the sound quality of the output. The RCA input jacks are nickel-plated to resist signal degradation caused by corrosion.

RCA Outputs: The amplifier also features a pair of RCA "Pass-Thru" jacks which provide a convenient source for daisy-chaining an additional amplifier without running an extra set of RCA cables from the front of the vehicle to the rear amplifier location. The RCA output jacks are nickel-plated to resist signal degradation caused by corrosion.

Remote Punch EQ (PEQ) Connection: An RJ-45 jack is provided for connecting an optional remote PEQ control (item number 575ROCKPEQ). If you use the remote PEQ, the Punch EQ control on the amp is disabled, and replaced by the remote.

Note: Previous model Punch Bass and Para-Punch remotes will not work with this amp.

I am truely amazed of how much this amp pushes. I got this amp along
with two 12" P2 dual voice coil subs. I had a guy call Fosgate to get the
dimensions on a ported box and it was well worth it. I wish i would have
went with P3 but i really am satisfied with this set up. I get a kick out of
people gettin in my Bronco and trippin about how it makes their hair
vibrate.....

I'm pushing 2 Alpine 12" Type R's with the RF 1000 --- I'm impressed! Has loads of
power and hits really hard! I have it wired in a 1 ohm load configuration. No problems to
date. You can't beat the price either!

great amp overall

Written By john, Twin Cities, MN on Thursday, December 25, 2008

This really is a great amplifier overall, im powering two P3 Punch 12" subs in a ported enclosure, and the setup really kicks. I love the looks I get from people when i pull up to stop lights. * The only thing that I wish the amp had, was LPF(low pass) and HPF (high pass) adjustments. There is only one Frequency adjustment.(other than Gain)

But that would definitely not deter me from owning this amp!

Absolutely mindblowing

Written By Harrison, Atlanta, GA on Sunday, August 09, 2009

I have this amp pushing two Rockford p3 10's and wow this is an amazing set up. I have the amp settings as low as they can go [without losing sound quality] and it still pushes enough power for you to feel it in your chest. It's almost overkill....almost.
Rockford's quality is nothing short of incredible. Buy this amp, you will not be sorry!

I just bought this amp. I have it hooked up to 1 P2 12". My car rattles and it sounds more powerful than when I had my 2 10's. I can feel it hit hard in my back. Worth every penny.

OMG

Written By Blaze, Charlottesville, VA. on Thursday, April 28, 2011

I got this amp at the outlet store on sale for $199.00! This is the most amazing
amp I have ever owned. I have it paired with ONE 10" speaker and it hits HARDER
THAN 2 TWELVES! Of course it is not just any 10, but a Rockford POWER series,
another steal of a deal I got at the outlet store for a measly $79.00! If you don't
know this series of speaker you need to look it up and you will see the amazing
deal I got. Paired with this amp it crushes HARD with absolutely NO DISTORTION!
I love it so much I found another Punch P500-2 in the outlet for only $169! and
bought it for my best friend. These amps are the S^#*!!!

great sound

Written By audiophile_08, east coast, usa on Friday, June 18, 2010

i haven't dabbled in car stereo since the days of the old amps of the 90s (still have a couple of them in use by the way) so i decided to take a chance on fosgate since the newer stuff is described to me as junk. well this fosgate pounds. i have it paired with 2 alpine type R DVC 10s wired in parallel for a 1 ohm load to the amp.subs sitting in 1.6cu ft total and this amp really pushes them to their xmax! the amp sounds very clean, tight, crisp. i was a little comcerned about the 12db/octave crossover slope (as all of my previous stuff has the 24/db and i like that fast cut-off time) but this amp does not dissapoint. it does pull some power when you crank it up so make sure your elec/charging system can handle it. very happy with the amp so far and have had it REALLY cranked for about an hour and the amp got warm but not hot :~)
