About the Rockford Fosgate P3D2-12

Standout performance

The aluminum cone acts as a giant heat sink, directing heat away from the copper-clad aluminum voice coils. Special venting keeps the voice coils cool, so you get incredibly consistent bass performance over time. This P3 sub features an extended pole piece and bumped backplate that leaves more room for heavy excursion, so it'll hit deeper lows without "bottoming out."

Standout performance

Rockford Fosgate showcases their fanatical commitment to sonic excellence in the Punch Series of speakers, amps, and subs. If you like to listen to potent, powerful music — and feel it too — Punch components will give you impressive sound that'll stand out in a crowd.

Designed for deeper, louder bass

Rockford Fosgate designed the P3D2-12 12" subwoofer to stay strong even when the bass gets hot. This Punch P3 sub features a rigid anodized aluminum cone that holds its shape through heavy play, while staying light and responsive. Rockford Fosgate uses a new technique to attach the oversized rubber surround to the cone that increases available cone area up to 25%, so this sub can push more air for even bigger bass.

The dual 2-ohm voice coils allow you to wire the sub for 1-ohm impedance to get maximum power output, or for 4-ohm impedance if you're using multiple subs. The P3D2-12 sub works equally well in a sealed or ported enclosure, so you can choose the kind of bass you want for your system.

Product Research

Features
Enclosure Compatibility

Features

Overview: The Rockford Fosgate Punch P3D2-12 is a 12-inch subwoofer with dual 2Ω voice coils. The sub features a hybrid StampCast basket, quick-release compression terminals, anodized aluminum cone, and Santoprene surround. An anodized aluminum voice coil former and spider venting help keep the subwoofer cool.

Dual 2Ω Voice Coils: The dual 2Ω voice coils offer wiring flexibility; when wired in parallel the woofer presents a 1Ω load, when wired in series the woofer presents a 4Ω load.

Compression Terminals: The P3D2-12 features spring post terminals which accommodate speaker wire up to 10 gauge.

CEA-2031 Compliant: Power handling on the P3D2-12 subwoofer conforms to CEA-2031 industry standards. This means the subwoofer has the capacity to handle power under continuous demand, not instantaneous power handling, that over time, can damage voice coils.

FlexFit Basket: The Flex Fit frame utilizes slots (where possible) instead of single screw sized holes; allowing slight adjustment of the speaker when mounted.

Trim Ring: To improve the cosmetic look, a decorative trim ring is included that mounts over the flange of the woofer. When using the cast aluminum trim ring the woofer is first mounted with four screws, then the ring is placed on top of the woofer, aligning the final four holes of the woofer with ring. The other four screws are used for these holes to mount the ring and woofer to the enclosure. Without the trim ring the mounting height of the woofer is just under 7/8 of an inch, with the trim ring it's approximately 1-1/16 inches. The diameter of the trim ring is 13-5/16 inches.

Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box: Rockford recommends a sealed enclosure with an optimum internal volume of 1.02 cubic feet (from 0.75 to 1.25 cubic feet is acceptable). Sealed enclosures provide the most control over a woofer, will handle a lot of power, and provide accurate sonic reproduction, making them suitable to all types of music.

Ported Box: Rockford recommends a ported enclosure with an internal volume of 1.79 cubic feet using one 4" diameter x 10" long port; this yields a tuning frequency of 40 Hz. Ported (or vented) enclosures typically provide better overall efficiency than sealed so they are suitable for use with smaller amplifiers, giving you more bass output from less power. However, this efficiency comes at the expense of very low frequency output (below 33 Hz).

Q
I want to run 2 rockford fosgate p3d2 12 to a kicker 800.1 ?What would be the best way or would it hurt amp?
chris  Dec 26, 2023
1 answer
A
Our subwoofer wiring guide in the handy link below is an excellent way to figure out how to wire your subwoofer combination to not cause damage to your amp, Chris. Both subwoofers wire in a series/parallel configuration would present a 2-ohm load at the Kicker amp when wired properly, and that would not harm the Kicker amp at all. Q
I HAVE 2 12 SUBS P3D2 AT 2OHMS WITH A SEALD BOOM BOX AND I WANT A FOSGATE AMP FOR THEM,WHICH ONE WILL YOU RECOMMEND???

Q
I have a kicker 43CXA600.1 amp will that be fine for 1 Rockford fosgate P3D2 if I plan on wiring them down to 1-OHM?
joseph  May 21, 2023
1 answer
A
It will not, Joseph. Your Kicker 43CXA600.1 amp is not 1-ohm stable and will be damaged if you attempt wiring it to your Rockford Fosgate P3D2. The new Alpome S2-A60M in the link below is a solid choice as it is not only 1-ohm stable it delivers exactly 600-watts RMS. This is a perfect match for the Rockford Fosgate wired down to 1-ohm. https://www.crutchfield.com/p_500S2A60M/Alpine-S2-A60M.html
bo  May 21, 2023 (Staff)
Q
would this sub handle 1000 watts at 1 ohm?
brayden  Jan 04, 2023
1 answer
A
That is a little too much power for the Rockford Fosgate P3D2-12 sub, Brayden. These are rated for 300-600 watts RMS maximum. The Soundstream Reserve RSW-122 in the link below is a solid call if you need a speaker that can handle 1000-watts RMS. https://www.crutchfield.com/p_530RSW122/Soundstream-Reserve-RSW-122.html

Q
do i need to break this sub in when i first get it?
brayden  Nov 22, 2022
1 answer
A
That's affirmative Brayden. Almost all speakers do need a little time to get "warmed up" and find their groove after manufacture. Rockford does not specify a time frame sadly but for most speakers around a week of listening time (60-80 hours of listening) at moderate volume will let them find that groove. They sound good right out of the box, but you will find they will sound better after break in! You will want to avoid any high-volume listening until after the break-in. I hope this helps!

Q
I'm looking to get a rockford fosgate 12" P3D2 do i need to get another box for the rockford fosgate P3? because i already have a 12" sound ordnance ported box and I'm running a pheonix gold 2500 watt amp
jean ann  Jun 28, 2022
1 answer
A
Greetings Jean, and thank you for your question. You will not need to replace your subwoofer enclosure. The Rockford P3 will work fine in it. Phoenix Gold does not give a 1ohm power rating. Im not sure if the amp can run at 1 ohm. You would be better with the P3D4 and run it at 2 ohms. That amp's specs are 500 watts at 2 ohms.

Will Rockford fosgate r500x1d amp work for this sub?
jurko  Aug 07, 2021

This amplifier is 500 watts at a 2 ohm load. Do you already have that subwoofer? If so you need an amplifier that is 500 watts at a 1 ohm load.

A
Yes. I'm running 2

Q
Will Rockford fosgate r500x1d amp work for this sub? Only running 1 sub
jurko  Aug 07, 2021
3 answers
A
Yes, that amp will work. I tried it myself, but it wasn't enough power or bass for me. I returned it and bought the r750x1d amp. I was told it is better to over power the sub rather that under power it. This sub with the 750 watt prime amp slammer hammers.
erik  Aug 09, 2021
A
yes it will and work fine in a sealed or ported box about 1.25 cf per woofer
larry  Aug 07, 2021
A
Yes the amp will push the sub nicely.

A
Just need to make sure the impedance matches on the amp to the sub. That way, neither are running with strain or too efficient.
bryent  Apr 26, 2021
A
No. You should be fine with the 2000 Orion.
andrew  Apr 26, 2021
A
No you should be fine
darius  Apr 26, 2021
A
No, you do not need to get another amp. These subs are amazing. Hard hitting bass.
lorenzo  Apr 25, 2021
A
No way you could run 2 with that amp providing it a output is as claimed.

Q
can this handle 2ohm and would this 4 ch over power the 165x3 ?
colin  Sep 02, 2019
1 answer
A
You should match this https://www.crutchfield.com/p_5751P3D412/Rockford-Fosgate-P3D4-12.html with that monoblock amp as the impedance is a much better match up. As far as teh 4-channel amplifier and the speakers go. they are cloe enough that they will work perfectly together.

Q
Do you think this sub would be good to run 800 watts constantly? I'm thinking of buying this sub and pairing it with the Pioneer GM-D8601 which will push out 800 watts rms at 1 ohm. Do you think this sub would survive or would it just be better for me to get the Lightning Audio L-1500D and only send 500 watts at 1 ohm?

daniel  Jul 07, 2015

That's a good question I think the 300, to 600 is depending what ohm load you run them at I have mine hooked up to a soundstream 2000 it's plenty..and headroom to spare. On that particular amp at 2ohm load I'm getting 1300 rms..
tobey  Jul 07, 2015
A
600 rms watts
alexis  Jul 07, 2015
A
RMS is basically what the sub woofer will push on a regular basis. The peak wattage is what you can push the sub woofer to before you damage it

Q
Hi would you recommend a ported or sealed enclosure for the subs... what would be best for spl?
justin  Aug 30, 2014
2 answers
A
It all depends on where and how you install it. I put the one I bought in the MTX Thunderform and it Pounds out real nice Bass and it is not vented.
wayne e  Sep 08, 2014
A
Ported will give you the most SPL. Ported (or vented) enclosures typically provide better overall efficiency than sealed so they are suitable for use with smaller amplifiers, giving you more bass output from less power. However, this efficiency comes at the expense of very low frequency output (below 33 Hz).
