Standout performance

Rockford Fosgate showcases their fanatical commitment to sonic excellence in the Punch Series of speakers, amps, and subs. If you like to listen to potent, powerful music — and feel it too — Punch components will give you impressive sound that'll stand out in a crowd.

Exploded view

Designed for deeper, louder bass

Rockford Fosgate designed the P3D4-12 12" subwoofer to stay strong even when the bass gets hot. This Punch P3 sub features a rigid anodized aluminum cone that holds its shape through heavy play, while staying light and responsive. Rockford Fosgate uses a new technique to attach the oversized rubber surround to the cone that increases available cone area up to 25%, so this sub can push more air for even bigger bass.

Heat-sink cone

The aluminum cone acts as a giant heat sink, directing heat away from the copper-clad aluminum voice coils. Special venting keeps the voice coils cool, so you get incredibly consistent bass performance over time. This P3 sub features an extended pole piece and bumped backplate that leaves more room for heavy excursion, so it'll hit deeper lows without "bottoming out."

The dual 4-ohm voice coils allow you to wire the sub for 2-ohm impedance to get maximum power output, or for 8-ohm impedance if you're using multiple subs. The P3D4-12 sub works equally well in a sealed or ported enclosure, so you can choose the kind of bass you want for your system.

To drive this single subwoofer, we recommend a mono amplifier rated between 450 and 900 watts RMS at 2 ohms. For more information, please refer to our article on How to Match Subwoofers and Amplifiers.

What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

I'm running this single sub in a late model f150 s.crew at first off of a Jl jx 500/1. It hit pretty nice but I wanted more, I originally bought this sub as a filler as I blew my 12w3 so I installed the P3 till I could purchase a 12w7. I upgraded to the jl jx 1000/1 this sub defiantly woke up. It's in a 3/4 birch 1.75cuft ported box @35hz I was a lot closer to what I was looking for. The aluminum cone has a distinct sound that I have to say I'm not a fan of, it's not at all bad, just not for me. Also the accuracy is not even close to that of JL, but With the right enclosure & wattage you could really get this thing to slam. I got the w7 so I'll be happy to get rid of this thing. Not at all a bad sub but if you're particular abt your bass give them a listen before you commit.

Pros: Slams Price

Cons: Odd shaped mounting ring Couldn't use trim ring with box design Accuracy could be better Sound from aluminum cone

I love these subs, I've got two of them in the back of an explorer. Box is tuned to 34hz, and feeding them with a hifonics 1700rms amp at 1ohm. They take every bit of power i give to them. They can get really loud, i've had my steering wheel flex from these. Can't say enough good things about Rockford Fosgate, and these subs.

Got the P3 to fit in an MTX ThunderForm enclosure for my new Mustang because the MTX sub at the same power level was too deep for the enclosure. The sound is great and it looks awesome. Matched with an Alpine PDX-V9. They seem a good pair.

Pros: - Great seat thumping bass.

Cons: None so far

Was an extreme upgrade from two JL Audios 8's, these subwoofers (have two inside a chevy tahoe) and boy do they bump. I have only one rockford fosgate p1000 amp backing these babies up but will soon have another to wire each sub to its own amp. The price is also perfect trust me invest in something that wil last you will not regret these monsters!

This subwoofer is amazing! I've owned and been using it for 6 months now and it still never ceases to amaze me. It has superior sound quality and looks that could kill.

Pros: Drop dead hot build design and performs up to the rockford name.

Cons: It is kind of pricey but you get what you pay for. Atleast that's what I've learned with other brands

the title is self explanatory...their competitors may have a little better sound quality but make up for it in power handling...you can "abuse" these woofers and they keep asking for more...I have 1000 watts on one p3 12 in a sealed box!!! Also their power rating is more accurate than others mainly type-r and w6v2. If your more of a bass head but still want sound quality this woofer is the best medium of both worlds.

Pros: power handling (durability)-best subwoofer for a person looking for SQ and SPL

Cons: some woofers have better SQ but cant handle SPL

Does not even compare to the old P3

Written by: rft1d412 from Iowa on September 25, 2011

We received one of these at work recently and put it in the sound room. These things are absolute beasts compared to the old P3. The metal cone and rubber surround are HUGE upgrades and the extra 100wrms power handling also helps tremendously. Powered by a RF T1500 and mounted in the Rockford Fosgate pre-loaded slot-port enlosure, this thing is insane. It out-performs two previous model P2-12's in a dual slot-port box by quite a margin. The metal cone won't crack and break like the old plastic cones, and gives it a very solid, deep, hard hitting sound. The rubber surround means it will last and is less prone to puncture wounds like the foam surrounds on the old P3. Overall a very good buy and a very solid subwoofer, and definitely a huge iimprovement over the old P3.

Features
Enclosure Compatibility

Features

Overview: The Rockford Fosgate Punch P3D4-12 is a 12-inch subwoofer with dual 4Ω voice coils. The sub features a hybrid StampCast basket, quick-release compression terminals, anodized aluminum cone, and Santoprene surround. An anodized aluminum voice coil former and spider venting help keep the subwoofer cool.

Dual 4Ω Voice Coils: The dual 4Ω voice coils offer wiring flexibility; when wired in parallel the woofer presents a 2Ω load, when wired in series the woofer presents an 8Ω load.

Compression Terminals: The P3D4-12 features spring post terminals which accommodate speaker wire up to 10 gauge.

CEA-2031 Compliant: Power handling on the P3D4-12 subwoofer conforms to CEA-2031 industry standards. This means the subwoofer has the capacity to handle power under continuous demand, not instantaneous power handling, that over time, can damage voice coils.

FlexFit Basket: The Flex Fit frame utilizes slots (where possible) instead of single screw sized holes; allowing slight adjustment of the speaker when mounted.

Trim Ring: To improve the cosmetic look, a decorative trim ring is included that mounts over the flange of the woofer. When using the cast aluminum trim ring the woofer is first mounted with four screws, then the ring is placed on top of the woofer, aligning the final four holes of the woofer with ring. The other four screws are used for these holes to mount the ring and woofer to the enclosure. Without the trim ring the mounting height of the woofer is just under 7/8 of an inch, with the trim ring it's approximately 1-1/16 inches. The diameter of the trim ring is 13-5/16 inches.

Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box: Rockford recommends a sealed enclosure with an optimum internal volume of 1.02 cubic feet (from 0.75 to 1.25 cubic feet is acceptable). Sealed enclosures provide the most control over a woofer, will handle a lot of power, and provide accurate sonic reproduction, making them suitable to all types of music.

Ported Box: Rockford recommends a ported enclosure with an internal volume of 1.79 cubic feet using one 4" diameter x 10" long port; this yields a tuning frequency of 40 Hz. Ported (or vented) enclosures typically provide better overall efficiency than sealed so they are suitable for use with smaller amplifiers, giving you more bass output from less power. However, this efficiency comes at the expense of very low frequency output (below 33 Hz).

Clay in most cases with that amount of wattage you will not need an extra battery. Once you have finished your install, check the voltage. With a good alternator and battery it should be just fine. [ MICHAEL  Sep 11, 2015 ]
Yes, two 4ohm DVC subs can be wired to either 1ohm OR 4ohms. [ chris  May 12, 2015 ]

Use the larger box so the bass has room to travel. The box I have is quite big. It takes up nearly the whole trunk. Works great. [ NOAH  Sep 02, 2014 ]
Ported boxes usually give off more fluttering bass sound versus a sealed box is a more direct hit. [ DOUG P  Sep 02, 2014 ]
Thanks for your question. For information on comparing two or more models I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences and help you make the best choice for your system and your budget. [ Greg  May 24, 2014 ]  Staff
I would say run the biggest you can on both subs and amp. Should be around 10-12 gauge on subs and 4 gauge minimum on amp [ nic  May 10, 2014 ]
It depends on the amp size and specifications of the speaker. I would refer to the manufacturer for this question. Call up Rockford Fosgate and tell them what you have. If properly wired it sounds great. Noah [ NOAH  May 10, 2014 ]
