About the Rockford Fosgate P3D4-12

Jo Greene

Standout performance

Rockford Fosgate showcases their fanatical commitment to sonic excellence in the Punch Series of speakers, amps, and subs. If you like to listen to potent, powerful music — and feel it too — Punch components will give you impressive sound that'll stand out in a crowd.

Exploded view

Designed for deeper, louder bass

Rockford Fosgate designed the P3D4-12 12" subwoofer to stay strong even when the bass gets hot. This Punch P3 sub features a rigid anodized aluminum cone that holds its shape through heavy play, while staying light and responsive. Rockford Fosgate uses a new technique to attach the oversized rubber surround to the cone that increases available cone area up to 25%, so this sub can push more air for even bigger bass.

Heat-sink cone

The aluminum cone acts as a giant heat sink, directing heat away from the copper-clad aluminum voice coils. Special venting keeps the voice coils cool, so you get incredibly consistent bass performance over time. This P3 sub features an extended pole piece and bumped backplate that leaves more room for heavy excursion, so it'll hit deeper lows without "bottoming out."

The dual 4-ohm voice coils allow you to wire the sub for 2-ohm impedance to get maximum power output, or for 8-ohm impedance if you're using multiple subs. The P3D4-12 sub works equally well in a sealed or ported enclosure, so you can choose the kind of bass you want for your system.

Product Research

Features
Enclosure Compatibility

Features

Overview: The Rockford Fosgate Punch P3D4-12 is a 12-inch subwoofer with dual 4Ω voice coils. The sub features a hybrid StampCast basket, quick-release compression terminals, anodized aluminum cone, and Santoprene surround. An anodized aluminum voice coil former and spider venting help keep the subwoofer cool.

Dual 4Ω Voice Coils: The dual 4Ω voice coils offer wiring flexibility; when wired in parallel the woofer presents a 2Ω load, when wired in series the woofer presents an 8Ω load.

Compression Terminals: The P3D4-12 features spring post terminals which accommodate speaker wire up to 10 gauge.

CEA-2031 Compliant: Power handling on the P3D4-12 subwoofer conforms to CEA-2031 industry standards. This means the subwoofer has the capacity to handle power under continuous demand, not instantaneous power handling, that over time, can damage voice coils.

FlexFit Basket: The Flex Fit frame utilizes slots (where possible) instead of single screw sized holes; allowing slight adjustment of the speaker when mounted.

Trim Ring: To improve the cosmetic look, a decorative trim ring is included that mounts over the flange of the woofer. When using the cast aluminum trim ring the woofer is first mounted with four screws, then the ring is placed on top of the woofer, aligning the final four holes of the woofer with ring. The other four screws are used for these holes to mount the ring and woofer to the enclosure. Without the trim ring the mounting height of the woofer is just under 7/8 of an inch, with the trim ring it's approximately 1-1/16 inches. The diameter of the trim ring is 13-5/16 inches.

Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box: Rockford recommends a sealed enclosure with an optimum internal volume of 1.02 cubic feet (from 0.75 to 1.25 cubic feet is acceptable). Sealed enclosures provide the most control over a woofer, will handle a lot of power, and provide accurate sonic reproduction, making them suitable to all types of music.

Ported Box: Rockford recommends a ported enclosure with an internal volume of 1.79 cubic feet using one 4" diameter x 10" long port; this yields a tuning frequency of 40 Hz. Ported (or vented) enclosures typically provide better overall efficiency than sealed so they are suitable for use with smaller amplifiers, giving you more bass output from less power. However, this efficiency comes at the expense of very low frequency output (below 33 Hz).

Q
Are they competition speakers?
justin  Jul 15, 2023
1 answer
A
The T series are the competition level speakers. These hit hard in a sealed box with the right air space. Got 2 on a Skar 2000.1 amp and another set on a punch 1000. Very pleased.
robert  Jul 16, 2023
Q
Can this sub fit into the skar SK1X12V enclosure?
ethan  Mar 07, 2023
1 answer
A
We cannot guarantee fit with enclosures that we do not sell sadly, Ethan. We simply do not have the deep specs on other items. That being said, depth looks fine as you have 13.125" listed from SKAR. The ported size is also pretty spot on for what the Rockford is looking for, so it should sound great! While of course we cannot guarantee, this looks pretty good to me Ethan!

Q
What is the diameter of the magnet? My box gets smaller at the bottom where the magnet would be.
joshua  Jan 28, 2023
1 answer
A
Magnet diameter is listed at 8.4", Joshua. Make sure you have 6-11/16" for the top mount depth and enough room for adequate cooling around the magnet as well on the Rockford Fosgate P3D4-12.

Q
I have a Klipsch R-120S subwoofer. I blow out the speaker. Would this speaker be a good fit for this subwoofer to replace the speaker?
rookbird  Apr 15, 2022
1 answer
A
As for the FIT, as long as the mounting diameter and depth is appropriate the Rockford will Fit. The real question would be is your cabinet built to reccommended minimum requirements for the Rockford P3D4-12 to perform properly. Your amp rms power etc also needs to be appropriate for the Rockford P3D4-12. Great sub when in a properly designed cabinet.

Q
Could these speaker handle a rockford fosgate T1000-1bdcp? Is the sealed box for two speakers (sealed box volume: .75-1.25 cubic feet) and would you recommend these speakers in 2 ohm or 4ohm?
christopher  Dec 16, 2021
1 answer
A
Yes, 2 can handle that apm, but it would still be a little overkill (in my opinion). I'd get 4 ohm and wire them in parallel so the amp sees a 2 ohm load. I would also ensure my enclosure was on the higher end of that required volume. 1.25 cubic feet per sub for a total of 2.5 with the subs installed.

Assuming your getting two subs and wiring them in parallel I would say that's fine, I run just over 600rms through one and have never had an issue.

I had mine in a .97 sealed box and it sounded good, it just seemed like it was too small for the speaker. Ive heard really good things about the P3 in ported boxes if you have the room. I put mine in a Ford Ranger 2 door so I was limited on space

using a ported box works for hip hop,but a sealed box works too.sealed is harder on the woofer
johnny  Sep 05, 2019
A
Well, I am using a Sound ordinance ported box purchased from Crutchfield. I'm not sure how this sub would sound for hip hop.....but i can say it works great.. haven't had an issue with it.
robert  Sep 05, 2019
A
They both would be good for hip hop. But the type of music, is not what makes the difference. The best option for you comes by different factors. One how many sun's are you running, what amp you have powering it/them. What you want the bass to sound like? What kind of space the sub or subs are sitting in. Personally for me if the subs are in a sealed trunk I prefer sealed enclosures, if they are in open space like an SUV rear can then ported would be my choice.

Q
What box encloser is best for hip hop?. Sealed or ported. And does sealed box sound good with this speaker?
j peezy  Sep 05, 2019
2 answers
A
ported always better for bass, must have the power to push this speaker!
roberto  Sep 11, 2019
A
Sealed will give you much tighter, controlled hits. Ported will be louder but more muddy and less precise. I have this sub in a sealed box and with a good amp it provides way more bass that my ears can handle. Go with sealed.

Q
anyone know the cutout crutchfield says 11 1/16 owners manual says 11.25?
charles  Apr 25, 2018
1 answer
A
Thanks for your question! Because we have our own in-house Product Research team here who measure product dimensions and specs, it's not uncommon to see slight differences between our measurement and the manufacturer's. Our product researchers determined that 11-1/16" is the most accurate cutout diameter required for the Rockford P3D4-12 sub; whereas Rockford likely suggests 11-1/4" in the owner's manual for slightly more "wiggle" room. For more details or to discuss further, please contact an Advisor directly by phone (888.955.6000) or online chat.

What size amp will i need for a P3 12?

Oops sorry, need to clarify on my last answer! I actually have the R1200-1D, but I believe the CX1200.1 may work as well!
spencer  Nov 25, 2017
A
I would recommend the Kicker CX1200.1. I currently have this for two P3D4-12's and it matches their RMS exactly, and if you only have one sub you can wire it to 4 ohms instead of 2 and it will still be perfect for that one sub, and in the future if you get a second you can wire them both to 2 ohms and it will be perfect.

It will be nothing like top on as I have Unlimited Hard top. I have 2 in a ported sound ordinance box top off subs facing seats sound pretty good. I get many compliments on the bass when top is off.
philip james  Aug 21, 2019
A
Not sure if I understand your question. Sound quality will be good however I don't think it's weatherproof. I am more than pleased with the P3D4 12. I have 4 of them and they been pounding for a year now. If you power it correctly along with quality enclosure I think you too will be happy. As for UV and rain exposure we both can assume it would not be good.. And since you are putting it in Jeep an all acrylic enclosure would be mint.. Michael

What would the difference in sound / performance be between a 1 cubic foot sealed and a 1.5 cubic foot ported box?
mark  Aug 31, 2014

Use the larger box so the bass has room to travel. The box I have is quite big. It takes up nearly the whole trunk. Works great.

Ported boxes usually give off more fluttering bass sound versus a sealed box is a more direct hit.

I would say run the biggest you can on both subs and amp. Should be around 10-12 gauge on subs and 4 gauge minimum on amp

It depends on the amp size and specifications of the speaker. I would refer to the manufacturer for this question. Call up Rockford Fosgate and tell them what you have. If properly wired it sounds great. Noah
