About the Rockford Fosgate P165-SE

Alexander H.

Rockford Fosgate Punch P165-SE

Slots on the outer edge of the woofer basket make for an easier installation.

As solid as sound gets

Without a doubt, Rockford Fosgate's Punch Series P165-SE component speaker system is a powerful alternative to the speakers that came in your car. Using an injection-molded mineral-filled polypropylene cone, the 6-1/2" woofer delivers impressively accurate sound. Rockford Fosgate's signature VAST surround technique also expands the surface area of the cone, giving you better bass response than comparable speakers.

But no matter how heavy the bass gets, the separate 1" dome tweeter provides clear, extended highs for a rich full-range sound. Rockford Fosgate includes external crossovers to regulate your sound and make your lows, mids, and highs as undiluted as they can be.

Give your import some American muscle

Do you own a European car like a VW, Citroen, or Vauxhall? Rockford Fosgate designed these speakers with you in mind. Rather than only providing rigid screw holes that hopefully match up to your factory speaker opening, the Flex 2 Fit basket design uses slots on the outer edge of the woofer basket for an easier match.

Installation note: You'll need a pair of our universal backstraps to install the tweeters in the factory locations.

Product Research

Features

Injection-Molded Polypropylene Woofers: The woofer cones are mineral filled, injection-molded polypropylene. This molding process assures a uniform cone thickness for superior linearity and clarity. It is also light weight and rigid for decreased distortion and improved bass response.

Klippel Verified: The Klippel distortion analyzer, a device that uses a laser and sophisticated software to do large-scale analysis of drivers in motion, lets Rockford Fosgate optimize the speaker's motor structure, voice coil alignment, and suspension to yield the best possible performance.

VAST Surround: The Vertical Attach Surround Technique (VAST) increases a speaker's effective radiating cone area without increasing the size of the basket.

FlexFit 2 Basket: The FlexFit 2 frame utilizes slots (where possible) instead of single screw sized holes; allowing slight adjustment of the speaker when mounted.

Size Classification Note: Some manufacturers, including Rockford Fosgate, call this size speaker a 6-1/2". Because it requires a larger cutout than a standard 6-1/2" speaker, Crutchfield has traditionally referred to this size woofer as a 6-3/4". Please refer to the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector to confirm fit in your vehicle.

PEI Dome Tweeters: The 1" dome tweeters are made of Poly-Ether-Imide (PEI); PEI is a polymer film that produces a wide soundstage for superior imaging.

Mounting: The tweeters have multiple mounting configurations; choose flush or angled surface mount. The surface mount housing can be positioned at a 10° or 30° angle. Depending on the mount used, the installed dimensions are:

  Flush Surface 10° Surface 30°
Mounting Height 0.446" 1.064" 1.297"
Mounting Depth 0.912" Screw Depth Screw Depth
Frame Diameter 2.357" N/A N/A
Cutout Diameter 1.75" N/A N/A
Frame Width N/A 2.128" 2.128"
Frame Depth N/A 2.153" 2.149"

Crossovers: The crossover inputs and outputs are spade terminals; the included speaker wire has quick slides attached to easily connect to the crossover. The crossover slope is 12dB per octave.

Crossover Dimensions:

  • Width: 3-3/8" (4-3/8" including the wire)
  • Height: 1-3/8"
  • Depth: 2"

Q
Recommended amp for these plan on two pairs, same brand and rms so they last and donâ??t want heat issues, thanks, just want to look before talking to salesman. Will also be doing a ten or twelve band pass for hard bass, plan on 0-2 gauge wiring split for separate amps????

A
Greetings Don, and thank you for your question. We do not recommend going over RMS power on speakers at this point. These are rated for 60 RMS. A Rockford 50x4 channel will be more like 60 as they always put out more than advertised power. https://www.crutchfield.com/p_575P400X4/Rockford-Fosgate-Punch-P400X4.html?tp=35782 This amp needs a 4 gauge, and if your subwoofer amp will need a 4 gauge as well, then yes you can run 0 off the battery to a distribution block and 4 gauge then to each amp.

Q
Do I need to use a set of bass blockers coming from the crossover device when installing the tweeters? If not, would there be any benefit to doing this? Or does the supplied crossover unit already serve that purpose? Thanks in advance.
gian  Oct 02, 2021

A
No that's what the supplied crossover is for.
cory  Oct 03, 2021

Been rocking these guys for a few years now highly satisfied with the supplied crossover. Not had an issue with it. Tweeters haven't given me an issue.
vatic  Oct 03, 2021
A
The crossovers act as bass blockers so adding more would just hinder sound quality

Q
My father in law installed these rockford fosqate p165- se speakers with out installing the supplied crossovers. Will it make a huge difference with out the cross overs installed?
christopher  Dec 13, 2020

A
No. The covers are for people who want their speakers showing. If his are installed behind the door panels, their is no reason to install the covers.
zachary  Dec 15, 2020
A
It will sound a lot better with crossovers the crossovers filter the input and send clean output to the woofer and tweeter
cory  Dec 15, 2020
Q
My father in law installed these. 165- se Speakers with out installing the cross overs Will I have crap sound if I don't install the cross overs?
christopher  Dec 12, 2020
2 answers
A
Yes, you will want to install the crossovers with the tweeter and woofer for the set to sound the way they are intended to sound. The crossover is designed specifically for those speakers. It sends the highs to the tweeter and the lows to the woofer. Without the crossover these will not sound the way Rockford Fosgate designed them.
allison  Dec 23, 2020 (Staff)
A
My bad the I miss read the comment. Yes the crossovers protects the tweeters. Only install the crossover if you have tweeters.

Q
165-si vs 165-se......is there any sound quality difference with the external crossover?
michael  May 13, 2018
1 answer
A
I purchased and installed the 165 se components about a year ago. I cannot directly compare them to the si....however I can tell you that the tweeters were harsh and over powered the woofers. There is no adjustment on the crossover to help with this. After trying everything i could I just tossed them out and went with Infinity components which were roughly the same cost. The sound was well balanced and they sound amazing as compared to the Rockfords....

With the tweeters,I don't find that I miss the mid range that much, but in retrospect I don't think it would be a bad idea to have some.
