About the Rockford Fosgate P165-SI

Alexander H.

As solid as sound gets

Without a doubt, Rockford Fosgate's P165-SI component speaker system is a powerful alternative to the speakers that came in your car. Using an injection-molded mineral-filled polypropylene cone, the 6-1/2" woofer delivers impressively accurate sound. Rockford Fosgate's signature VAST surround technique also expands the surface area of the cone, giving you better bass response than comparable speakers. But no matter how heavy the bass gets, the separate 1" dome tweeter provides clear, extended highs for a rich full-range sound.

Slots on the outer edge of the speaker basket make for an easier installation.

Integrated crossover

Rockford Fosgate makes installing this component system simpler by concealing each crossover in the speaker basket. That way, you won't have to find space behind your door panels for extra black boxes, but you'll still enjoy the clean sound that results when you channel your lows, mids, and highs to the optimum speakers.

Give your import some American muscle

Do you own a European car like a VW, Citroen, or Vauxhall? Rockford Fosgate designed these speakers with you in mind. Rather than only providing rigid screw holes that may not always match up to your factory speaker opening, the Flex 2 Fit basket design uses slots on the outer edge of the speaker basket for an easier match.

Installation note: You'll need a pair of our universal backstraps to install the tweeters in the factory locations.

Product Research

Features

Injection-Molded Polypropylene Woofers: The woofer cones are mineral filled, injection-molded polypropylene. This molding process assures a uniform cone thickness for superior linearity and clarity. It is also light weight and rigid for decreased distortion and improved bass response.

Klippel Verified: The Klippel distortion analyzer, a device that uses a laser and sophisticated software to do large-scale analysis of drivers in motion, lets Rockford Fosgate optimize the speaker's motor structure, voice coil alignment, and suspension to yield the best possible performance.

VAST Surround: The Vertical Attach Surround Technique (VAST) increases a speaker's effective radiating cone area without increasing the size of the basket.

FlexFit 2 Basket: The FlexFit 2 frame utilizes slots (where possible) instead of single screw sized holes; allowing slight adjustment of the speaker when mounted.

Size Classification Note: Some manufacturers, including Rockford Fosgate, call this size speaker a 6-1/2". Because it requires a larger cutout than a standard 6-1/2" speaker, Crutchfield has traditionally referred to this size woofer as a 6-3/4". Please refer to the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector to confirm fit in your vehicle.

PEI Dome Tweeters: The 1" dome tweeters are made of Poly-Ether-Imide (PEI); PEI is a polymer film that produces a wide soundstage for superior imaging.

Mounting: The tweeters have multiple mounting configurations; choose flush or angled surface mount. The surface mount housing can be positioned at a 10° or 30° angle. Depending on the mount used, the installed dimensions are:

  Flush Surface 10° Surface 30°
Mounting Height 0.446" 1.064" 1.297"
Mounting Depth 0.912" Screw Depth Screw Depth
Frame Diameter 2.357" N/A N/A
Cutout Diameter 1.75" N/A N/A
Frame Width N/A 2.128" 2.128"
Frame Depth N/A 2.153" 2.149"

Crossovers: The high-pass crossovers are integrated into the baskets of the woofers and the tweeters are wired to a second set of terminals on the woofer using the included wire. The crossover slope is 12dB per octave.

Speaker Terminals: These speakers have 0.25" wide positive (+) terminals and 0.187" wide negative (-) terminals, which are too large for the vehicle-specific speaker harnesses Crutchfield supplies for many vehicle applications. We recommend that a pack of assorted female quick slides (item number 120FQS10PK, sold separately) be purchased and spliced to the harnesses to adapt them to the speaker terminals.

Customer Q&A

Q
What is the parameters that won't allow this to be installed in a 2023 Ford Maverick?
martin  Jan 13, 2024
1 answer
A
The mounting height needed to fit the woofer is greater than what we found in the doors of the Maverick. We found there to be 0.371" in the Maverick and the woofer needs 0.425"
jason  Jan 13, 2024 (Staff)
Q
Why will this not fit in my rear deck corner when it's the same size as the lower front door on my 2019 Honda accord ?
trevor  Dec 17, 2023
1 answer
A
Speaker sizes (6-1/2", 6"x9", 5-1/4", etc.) are simply categories that roughly describe the size of a given speaker in relation to other speakers of a similar size. In reality, different speakers within a given size (6-1/2", in this case) have different dimensions (mounting depth, mounting height, magnet diameter, etc.). In your case, the mounting height of the P165-SI is greater than the available space under the factory grille when using the HSB524 speaker bracket that we have for your vehicle. Q
Will this work with my factory radio on a 2012 vw passat with the 8 speaker system without the fender audio package?
jacob  Dec 27, 2022

A
These speakers would not be ideal for the 2012 VW Passat. For help with selecting speakers for your vehicle, please reach out to our advisors via online chat or phone at 1-800-324-9695.

Q
How do you bypass the built-in crossover if you have an active crossover system?
gary  Dec 12, 2022
1 answer
A
Greetings Gary, and thank you for your question. The high pass filters are integrated into the baskets of the woofers. To bypass that, just don't connect your tweeters to the extra set of terminals on the woofers.
hogan  Dec 12, 2022 (Staff)
Q
I understand the tweeters have their crossovers integrated into the basket of the woofers. Is there a built in passive xover for the woofer as well? Or can that be actively crossed over with my amp?
aaron  Mar 12, 2021
1 answer
A
The crossover built into the woofer makes sure the tweeter and woofer only get the frequencies they should. It is not necessary to use other crossovers
jason  Mar 28, 2021 (Staff)
Q
I understand that the crossover for the tweeters is in the basket. But what about the woofer? Is it a full range woofer that can be actively crossed over at the amp? Or does the woofer have it's own passive crossover as well built in like the tweeters?
aaron  Mar 12, 2021

A
Mine are crossed over at the amp. I installed bass blockers on the tweets as well just to be safe. Hope This helps
joshua d.  Mar 12, 2021
A
a sweet ICC (Integrated Concealed Crossover), eliminating the need to mount any black boxes, in Woofer. Woofer looks like it has dual voice coils but 2nd set of terminals are for tweeters
nathan  Mar 12, 2021
Q
Is it the tweeter that has the internal crossover, or is there a special connection on the mid-woofer for the tweeter to connect to? (P165-SI)
william  Feb 08, 2018
2 answers
A
The crosover is built into the woofer, so just screw down wire connections from tweeter and good to go.
richard  Feb 10, 2018
A
It's the midwoofer that has a special connection to go to the tweeter. I just connected mine directly into my factory harness instead but it would probably sound better if I had used the special connection from the midwoofer to the tweeter.
