Give your ride some Punch

Rockford Fosgate showcases their fanatical commitment to sonic excellence in the Punch Series of speakers, amps, and subs. If you like to listen to potent, powerful music — and feel it too — Punch components will give you impressive sound that'll stand out in a crowd.

Rockford Fosgate designed the Punch P1683 6"x8" speakers as a high-grade replacement for your factory speakers. Each speaker features a responsive polypropylene cone and butyl rubber surround that'll stand up to hours of high-volume jams. Rockford Fosgate uses a new technique to attach the surround to the cone that yields up to 25% more cone area, for fuller sound and stronger performance. The dome tweeter and supertweeter provide clear, extended highs that can hold their own when the bass gets heavy.

Grilles not included — factory grilles are suitable for most installations.

Product Highlights:

  • 3-way 6"x8" speakers (pair)
  • mineral-filled polypropylene woofer
  • butyl rubber surround
  • 3/4" and 1/2" polyetherimide (PEI) dome tweeter and supertweeter
  • Vertical Attach Surround Technique (VAST™) increases cone area
  • power range: 6-65 watts RMS (130 watts peak power)
  • frequency response: 65-24,000 Hz
  • sensitivity: 90 dB
  • top-mount depth: 2-5/16"
  • warranty: 1 year
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

Why replace your car's original speakers?

The speakers that originally came in your car were made from inexpensive materials, designed to create acceptable sound at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer. If you love music, you deserve better. Name-brand aftermarket speakers deliver fuller, richer sound with considerably more detail and nuance, and they're capable of playing louder and cleaner than factory speakers. Connect new speakers to your factory radio and you'll get the best possible sound from your dealer-equipped system. Pair them up with a new car stereo for a level of enjoyment that can rival a high-fidelity home audio experience.

Rockford Fosgate Punch P1683, 30 % better then stock 2013 F-150 speake

Written by: Jay from middletown, DE on February 5, 2016

Worth the affordable price. I bought 2 sets and did back and front of Super Cab F-150. Got rid of the dead/muffled midrange in the stock speakers. These are more clear and crip. No base. I was not looking for base anyway, at 55, I use the treble more. Nice speakers.

Install kit was very good and free, but you have t have some skill set and whil the instructions will show you how to get the door panels off, it won't help you with all the details.3-4 hours to right side and 1.5 hours to do the drivers side the next day. Pleant of tools and space, in the garage, I would do it all over if I had to,.

Pros: Fit, Instructions, free harness, nice speaker, Great highs and good mid range.

Cons: Bag of blue clips to fit the speakers, have to choose from many sizes to get right fit. Hex head bolts supplied would not work with the speakers, used stock screws.

Pros: Good fit for my Mazda Tribute front and back. Not audiophile quality but not audiophile price.

Cons: Great upgrade for a tired factory sound system.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great speakers! I have a 2013 Ford Mustang and they fit perfectly ! Only small problem i had was the harness wires did not fit perfectly. The negative on the wire harness was too small to fit over the negative on the speaker. So easily fixable, i bought new connectors at the auto parts store, stripped the wire and clamped the wire onto the new connectors. Works perfect!

Pros: Great sound, easy install, affordability for the quality

Cons: Negative wire needs to be fixed

2010 Ford Ranger
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers fit the factory opening and screw holes perfectly on my 2010 Ranger XL Regular Cab. The sound is a vast improvement over the Mexican OEM Ford speakers, especially in the highs and lower bass. Total bass is not that impressive, but could be the 6x8 cone design compromising that region of frequencies. Very satisfied, and Crutchfield had them on sale! Only thing I would add to the very complete instructions is leaving door lock pull up on re-install to assist in realigning same.

Pros: High-end speaker for a relatively modest price. Quality construction and materials. Installation instructions for the Ranger were spot on.

Cons: None

1995 Ford Escort LX
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a 1995 ford escort LX wagon, and these were sold to me with a "caution" that there was a bit of customizing for my car. They did in fact fit and work great, but you really have to use your brain, a couple of spare nuts laying around shop to give adequate space for speaker to not touch grill, and a saw to cut plastic off of grill and cut one of the grill brackets out of the way. I think they did a good job of pointing you in the right direction in their "caution" alert, and common sense has to take you the rest of the way. If you are mechanically inclined enough to put in a audio system, you should be smart enough to figure this instillation out.

Pros: great sound

Cons: Needs a little common sense ingenuity to modify mounting, in 1995 Escort LX wagon.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

2013 Ford Edge SEL

These speakers are much better than the stock speakers. Hooked mine up to the factory Head Unit. Highs and Mids are much clearer and there is a small improvement on the Lows.

On the installation side:

1.) Removing the door panels WILL result in broken panel clips. Specifically the white ones. Recommend that you get 8-10 new ones of these as a precaution. 2.) Shorten up the harness adapters to 1.5" of wire. All the rest is not needed. 3.) The metra terminals that are given to you free are pretty cheesy. They bend very easily so be careful and make sure that you are pushing them on straight - any deviation from straight will result in a bent terminal. 4.) There are (2) plastic tabs that need to be cut off flush on each door. A pair of flat back side cutters does the job just fine. 5.) The (4) bolts that hold the factory speakers can be reused without issue. Do not use the hardware that comes with the speakers.

Pros: Much better sound

Cons: Nothing with the speakers

Souds clear and a bit brighter in the trebble.

2007 Ford Mustang
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

2007 Mustang GT Premium coupe

I bought these based off of the reviews. I put them in because I thought the factory speakers were blown. Turns out they were not blown but a setting in the factory stereo was putting more power to the rear speakers rather then all speakers giving a really bad distortion to the speakers. After I replaced the speakers Is when I figured this out because these speakers did the same thing only worse. That is when I found it in the settings so check this setting first hit your menu button and look for it to say rear speakers switch it to all speakers or drivers side. This takes the power being pushed to the rear and spreads it more evenly to the other speakers.

That being said I decided to keep the RF speakers in place. I personally like the sound from them over the factory speakers.

Also of note is these same speakers will work in a 2007 Mustang GT coupe front door as well you will have to modify the plastic that the speaker is mounted in as they have upraised plastic tabs to keep the factory speakers aligned. Cut all four tabs off and they fit in place no problems what so ever. Also if mounting in the front door make sure you buy 2 sets of the rears so that you get the speaker adapter and the wire clips as the polarity is reversed in the front speakers as well with the wire harnes they give you.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent upgrade over stock. Replaced all 4 door speakers in a 2004 Ford Escape, and the difference was amazing. Huge improvement! Highs and Lows sound so much better, I don't even need to replace the factory HU.

Pros: Sound, Clarity, Volume - Ease of install. Highly Recommended and sound great with the factory 6 disk changer

Cons: Nothing to do with the speakers, but the Metra wiring harness and terminals were on the cheap side - One of the wiring harness' terminal kept pushing out when plugging it into the wiring, and the spades were very cheaply made and bend easily. Really can't complain as they were 'free'.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are very high quality speakers. However, these speakers only come with two slide posts, not four, which is customary? In addition, the slide posts are larger than standard, and require a larger push on connector? Finally, these speakers did NOT fit in the front doors of my '07 F150, without modification. I had to cut off some extra mounting tab, with a hacksaw, as it was made of plastic and the metal speaker shell. I wish I had known this, ahead of time.

Pros: High quality speaker, for a reasonable price.

Cons: Did not fit in my 2007 F150 (front door) without serious modification with a hacksaw.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a F150 Crew..did not want to use space under rear bench for sub woofers, so I knew I needed 3ways. Previously installed Pioneers, and Alpines. Went thru both because of slamming doors too hard. I now have Rockfords...the sound and bass punch is 100% noticeable difference. Of course I shouldn't be slamming the doors so hard. I like these Rockford Fosgates so much...I will soon swap out my 3-ways in the rear doors, and replace the Alpines. The 6 by 8 Rockfords did not fit in the doors right out of box. I called...talked to service..and was informed I needed to use a cutting tool to trim speaker frame edge.....then fit perfectly!

Pros: Quality sound. Best price. Fast shipping. Excellent customer and technical service. This is not my first experience with Crutchfield...nor will it be my last.

Cons: Uhh...hmm....well...uh...dang, can't think of any Cons.

Bought these to replace a blown OEM speaker in my wife's 2010 Mercury Mariner. They were a perfect fit and are noticeable improvement over the stock speakers. There is ample bass, especially in conjunction with the Mariner's stock sub-woofer. The wiring harness and wire clamps that Crutchfield supplied made installation easy. I also used a Dynamat speaker kit, but it's not required.

Pros: Perfect replacement fit. Improved sound quality. Crutchfield ordering process provides everything you'll need.

Cons: They do not come with speaker grills, so if you can't use the stock grills you'll have to find suitable replacements.

I purchased a new high end Alpine Head Unit for my 2004 ford ranger XLT. I decided to replace the front door speakers with these rather than the fosgate prime 2-way. They have a nice crisp and clean sound to them but I would have to say the stock paper cone speakers had more bass. Fortunately I'm not looking for bass but clarity since I'm not into listening to music with 4 12' subs in the back. Overall, good buy.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very pleased with the sound. I found a video on you tube about removing the door panels to install and that helped me a great deal on the installation. My only complaint about the install is that the quick connect that was supplied for easy installation did not fit the terminal on the speaker itself. I had to cut off the smaller of the two spade connectors and add a larger one to make it work. A bag of larger spade connectors was provided so I assume that they know this a problem already. I don't understand why you would provide a connector that doesn't fit your own speaker. I also installed a SoundgateT SubStageT SF150C09 by Kicker at the same time and I am very pleased with my new sound.

Pros: Great sound upgrade from my factory speakers.

I am pleased with the sound quality of Rockford Fosgate Punch speakers. I replaced the factory speakers in a 2001 Mazda Miata and was surprised to be able to notice a big improvement in such a small cabin. I highly recommend these speakers to friends and family.

Pros: Looks good, sounds great! Easy install, fit just right.

Cons: The wiring harness didn't match the harness in the Miata. The lock tabs don't line up. It'll hold, but may slip out in time. My choice was to either splice it in or use zip ties to hold the harnesses together. In the interest of time, I chose to zip them together.

They can't take all the unit can put out volume wise without distorting. Great speaker for my 2014 Mustang (doors)

Written by: DanielB from Atlanta, GA on March 23, 2014

2014 Ford Mustang
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed a set of these in my 2014 Mustang with the base, 4-speaker sound system. For the price, you would be very hard pressed to find a better sounding speaker. The highs are crisp and clear and louder than I would ever need them to be. Although some reviewers complain about the low-end sound, I find that they are much better than you would expect to find in this size speaker; 6x8's can only do so much. Additionally, there is a good foam gasket built onto the mounting surface (for top-mount applications) that will negate the use of having to apply additional sealing materials. I wish I knew that before I purchased the weather stripping.

The only complaint I have is that they were not pure drop-ins for my car, as stated by Crutchfield. The bracket that is used by Ford has mounting tabs that require modification (removal) on two of the four. Easily done with a sharp knife and a pair of pliers. I used only a one inch strip of weather strip as insurance on one of the two remaining tabs. It was a tight fit and likely not necessary, but like I said, insurance.

Pros: Excellent highs and mids Great mid-bass punch Excellent quality and construction

Cons: Not a clean drop-in for 2011-2014 Mustang but easy enough to accommodate.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Over all great speakers! I ordered two pairs, one for the front, one for the rear of my 2005 F150 SuperCab. The front set went out within the first two days, crutchfield sent a replacement pair no questions asked and now they work perfectly! The sound is much better than factory!

Pros: Better sound quality, easy to install

Cons: Requires trimming to fit my 2005 F150

I recently purchased these knowing that it had good reviews and well, they weren't wrong! These speakers sound clear and it really fills in that bass that my stock speakers on my 02 F-150 just couldn't put out. Makes the seats vibrate when it's on volume level 25.

Pros: Great sound for a great price. Easy install.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After purchasing a 2013 Ford XLT, (New) I expected more from the premium sound system that came with it. What I got was an over priced desk clock with a radio. I installed 2 pairs of the Rockford Fosgate Punch P1683 and it was an amazing difference in sound quality and volume. I did the installation myself. I recommend installing speaker baffles with the speakers.

There are several videos on YouTube that shows how to remove the door panels and it was a snap, took about 1.5 hours to complete.

Pros: Easy to install.

Cons: Provided connectors were cheap and did not fit the speaker connections. Had to make some modifications myself, minor inconvenience.

Pros: Excellent value, sound is very good.

Cons: Had to use my hand grinder to round off 2 corners of mounting ears to fit front door speakers, no big deal. Did not have to do this with the rear speakers

1998 Ford F-150
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For a '98 XL F150 single cab Flareside, doors and rear. Great speakers, it's been a few years since i've played with stereo toys so i spent a little more then what I wanted to but got a great "special" on the four speakers. Be careful when trimming the wires to splice the new connectors onto the wires (that was one of the options) as the drivers side seemed to be the shortest pull with the speaker connections on the opposite side of where the wires come in the door. Just flip the speaker "upside down" to gain a few inch's. (Looking at the speaker front, the connectors are on the left.) Too short and it can pull out or weaken the connectors, and too long and it could get tangled up in the window mechanism.

Pros: I didn't need the old outer speaker "protectors" from the factory speakers, they fit the new ones okay, but it looked like it might muffle the sound. I probably will put them on the next time I take the door panels off, just for sound of mind. The speakers do have the "plastic" look for the membrane but does seem pretty tough.

Cons: Nothing I can think of, other then getting a small sub woofer to accent the sound. Stock radio's fault not the speakers.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are great quality and sound is improved. For a full range speaker the all around sound is excellent. I used to be a guy who had the big high end sound system and these work just as well. Yes you don't get that deep bass but it's just enough that you don't lose out on a well rounded sound. If you are looking for a quality sound at an inexpensive price then look no further than these. I have a 2005 Ford F150 Super Cab with a Kenwood KDC-BT948HD stereo and they fit in the rear doors with no problems but for the front door location it requied a little bit of modification. I had to cut one of the mounting tabs off for them to fit. If it wasn't designed to fit multiple sized openings then no cutting would be required. As for the install manuel it's fantastic. I installed all 4 speakers and the modifications to 2 spekaers in less than 1 hour. Plus why buy from anywhere else, they give you everything you need : adapters so you don't have to cut and splice anything, manuels, and expert advice.

Pros: overall sound quality, price, install manuel, wiring harness.

I bought these on Thursday and got them on Monday. I bought them to replace the factory speakers in my 2012 Ford F150 XLT. I installed all 4 in about an hour. The directions provided were very good. I had to cut off both female connectors on the speaker adapters Crutchfield provided but they already knew this and provided the correct female connectors. They drop in both the front and rear doors and sound much better then the factory paper junk. A side by side comparison of the factory to these is a joke. I think they will sound even better with a powered sub to fill in the shallow low end.

Pros: Drop in replacement for factory. Much more robust. Sound better then stock junk.

Cons: None so far.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a 2002 Mazda Protege. I installed the Rockford Fosgate Punch P1683 speakers in my front doors to replace my factory speakers. Crutchfield gave me instructions on how to remove the door panels which made things much easier. Although I really don't like 5x7 speakers, I wasn't willing to modify my doors to accommodate 6x9's. These speakers exceeded my expectations. They have outperformed all of the 5x7's I've had so far. They have great Highs, Mids, and Lows for a speaker this size. I have pair these with a JVC KWR900BT receiver and JBL GT6-69 speakers in the rear deck and together they sound great. However, i do have to fade the sound to front a little or the 6x9's overpower the 5x7's.

Pros: Great Price. Great sound for the size.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I chose these speakers based on a good past experience with Rockford-Fosgate Punch series and they have good sensitivity which is important when using with the factory radio. These speakers sound decent and fit in the front door of a 2012 Ford Mustang. Fairly easy install and a HUGE improvement in sound quality over the junk factory speakers on the Shaker500 system. Still sound a little harsh, but it could be due to the factory Shaker500 head unit. Still, now I can at least listen to the sound system.

Pros: Easy install, decent sound quality.

Cons: Sound a little bit harsh with the factory sound system.

Major Improvemnt

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Huge improvement over my factory speakers. I drive a 2012 Mustang that had some very lackluster speakers provided by Ford. I decided to switch them out for the Fosgate speakers, and they sound way better. I can drive them much harder without the distortion from the factory speakers, and their sound is very crisp and clear compared to the Ford's more "muddled" factory set-up.

I had two Fosgate 10" subs from an old system that I installed in the trunk to get some bass. The component speakers sound fantastic, but they will not give you big bass (even though it's better than the factory speakers).

Pros: Great sound, and reasonably priced. They can be driven very hard without distorting. Crutchfield's (free) installation guide was a HUGE help. Just follow the instructions and you'll get them switched out in no time.

Cons: I had to slightly modify the housing of the speakers because the Fosgates were shaped just a bit different than the factory speakers. Nothing major, but annoying nonetheless. This is likely only a problem on a few vehicles (just guessing).

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these speakers for my '06 Ford Expedition. Crutshfield originally recommended the P1S652, but those required some major cutting of the trim around the speaker. I just installed the P1683's and they sound great! I did have to do some minor trimming of the speaker's frame as the Expedition has a recess that the speaker sits in. No big deal. The highs are incredible. Very crisp and clean. The low frequencies are OK but bot great; however, that's why subwoofers were created.

Pros: Heavy speaker, solid frame, well designed, crisp clean highs. The Ford factory speakers are lightweight, muddy-sounding low performers and these were, overall, a terrific repalcement

Cons: Minor trimming of the speaker's frame is required to fit the Expedition. A hacksaw worked just fine. Not much "Punch" in the low end.

Purchased these as support speakers to P1572's. They performed great in grand daughters '08 mustang as rear units. Adjustments in Sony HU made them sound great without power amp or sub (which will probably be added later). Installation of rear speakers in '08 Mustang was a nightmare in spite of Crutchfield instructions AND "You Tube" videos I found.

Pros: So impressed I purchased two more pair for my wife's '09 F-150. The enhancement of the Sony system was unbelievable.

Features

Injection-Molded Polypropylene Woofers: The woofer cones are mineral filled, injection-molded polypropylene. This molding process assures a uniform cone thickness for superior linearity and clarity. It is also light weight and rigid for decreased distortion and improved bass response.

Butyl Rubber Surrounds: The butyl rubber surrounds dampen unwanted harmonic distortion while maintaining linear geometry under extreme weather conditions. This leads to less distortion, superior frequency response, and superior durability.

VAST Surround: The Vertical Attach Surround Technique (VAST) increases a speaker's effective radiating cone area without increasing the size of the basket.

Tweeters: Each speaker features two tweeters, 1/2" and 3/4" domes. The material used is PEI (Poly-Ether-Imide); PEI is a polymer film that produces a wide soundstage for superior imaging.

Speaker Terminals: These speakers have 0.25" wide positive (+) terminals and 0.187" wide negative (-) terminals, which are too large for the vehicle-specific speaker harnesses supplied by Crutchfield for many vehicle applications. It is recommended that a pack of assorted female quick slides (item number 120FQS10PK) be purchased and spliced to the harnesses to adapt them to the speaker terminals.

It depends on what your looking for more bass or just richer sound factory speakers won't do much. If you want more bass then look at a powered sub . [ BRANDON L  Dec 27, 2015 ]
The crossover on component speakers & 2 way or 3 way speakers is built into the speaker. Yes it is only highs going to your tweeters. The crossover in your stereo will separate your sub output from your other speakers. [ barton  Dec 27, 2015 ]
IF your unit can be adjusted to direct all frequency to all the speakers then you should be good. I would say look up the manual on how to basically do what a crossover does in subwoofers. The frequency can be forced out of specific iutputs. Or have a unity distribution, then the speakers handle what they were designed for. These are great speakers. Start with the manual of your head unit. My thoughts... Vinman [ Vincent  Dec 27, 2015 ]
I would think your assumption is correct, since my factory tweeters still produce sound with the addition of these speakers. I cannot say for sure if the tweeters in the Rockford speakers produce any sound, but they are a big improvement over the factory Sony speakers that came out. [ steven  Dec 26, 2015 ]
I also listen to all types of music and am very satisfied with these speakers. [ ruben  Dec 17, 2015 ]
These are good all around speakers. Although they don't produce a lot of bass [ scott  Dec 14, 2015 ]
I Don't recall what size they are, but if you pick up a set of the smallest and next size-up co n newton's at your local autoparts store, you should have it covered. [ Shane  Nov 24, 2015 ]
One of the female connectors is the standard size. The 2nd female connector is smaller, but not the very small size, so I'd call that one medium in size. Hope this helps. [ DAVID  Nov 24, 2015 ]
Hey Jerry P, I don't know if this statement is going to help.the speakers are great but I put them in a Ford Explorer,if you get them working working you'll feel them in your chest.good luck [ Alfred  Sep 15, 2015 ]
I mounted them in my 2014 Mustang (base). There is no problem with the depth in mine. There was a small modification needed to get them to fit in the factory bracket, though. I had to remove part of the lip that the speakers mounted to. Hard to describe but when you go to put them in you'll understand... I first scored the plastic with a sharp knife and then snapped the lip off (part of one; there's 2) then used high density weather stripping on the mounting surface of the speaker; a pro would have used sound deadening mat, but this was way cheaper. If the budget allows, might I recommend Alpine Type-R. I am moving my punches to the rear deck and installing type Rs in the door next week. [ DANIEL  Sep 09, 2015 ]
Thank you very much for your information! [ Dan A.  May 12, 2014 ]
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: The P1683 speaker's crossover is built in and splits the frequencies between the woofer, tweeter, and super tweeter in the speaker. There is no adjustment necessary on the speaker. Within the radio you have high and low pass filter settings. The high pass filter will allow you to filter bass out of the speakers; this is commonly done if you are also running subwoofers or smaller speakers that don't produce bass very well. The 6x8 speakers you have can handle a full range signal and I would just set that to "Through" The low-pass filter will allow you set the bass cut off for subwoofers. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Krissy  May 06, 2014 ]  Staff
These speakers will work fine with your receiver. However, to get the best performance from them, you will want to add an amplifier. If you are interested in looking at an amp, then I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences between the amp models and help you make the best choice for your system. [ Jeff  Feb 10, 2014 ]  Staff
