Give your ride some Punch

Rockford Fosgate showcases their fanatical commitment to sonic excellence in the Punch Series of speakers, amps, and subs. If you like to listen to potent, powerful music — and feel it too — Punch components will give you impressive sound that'll stand out in a crowd.

Rockford Fosgate designed the Punch P1683 6"x8" speakers as a high-grade replacement for your factory speakers. Each speaker features a responsive polypropylene cone and butyl rubber surround that'll stand up to hours of high-volume jams. Rockford Fosgate uses a new technique to attach the surround to the cone that yields up to 25% more cone area, for fuller sound and stronger performance. The dome tweeter and supertweeter provide clear, extended highs that can hold their own when the bass gets heavy.

Grilles are not included; the factory grilles should be suitable for most applications.

Features

Injection-Molded Polypropylene Woofers: The woofer cones are mineral filled, injection-molded polypropylene. This molding process assures a uniform cone thickness for superior linearity and clarity. It is also light weight and rigid for decreased distortion and improved bass response.

Butyl Rubber Surrounds: The butyl rubber surrounds dampen unwanted harmonic distortion while maintaining linear geometry under extreme weather conditions. This leads to less distortion, superior frequency response, and superior durability.

VAST Surround: The Vertical Attach Surround Technique (VAST) increases a speaker's effective radiating cone area without increasing the size of the basket.

Tweeters: Each speaker features two tweeters, 1/2" and 3/4" domes. The material used is PEI (Poly-Ether-Imide); PEI is a polymer film that produces a wide soundstage for superior imaging.

Speaker Terminals: These speakers have 0.25" wide positive (+) terminals and 0.187" wide negative (-) terminals, which are too large for the vehicle-specific speaker harnesses supplied by Crutchfield for many vehicle applications. It is recommended that a pack of assorted female quick slides (item number 120FQS10PK) be purchased and spliced to the harnesses to adapt them to the speaker terminals.

Q
can i mix n match speaker brands? can i get these for my rear door speakers on 07 ford edge then get another speaker brand for my front door speakers.
dakota  Feb 28, 2024
1 answer
A
Hey Dakota, that is a great question. So yeah, there is nothing wrong with mixing and matching speaker brands. The only thing I really advise watching for is to ensure that the speaker material is similar to the ones in the rear so we can keep a pretty similar timbre match. I would not recommend a softer tweeter up front like a silk tweeter as they can have issues playing above the brighter speakers in the back so if we keep them close, it shouldn't sound off.

Q
Why won't the Rockford fosgate p1683 fit the rear deck of a 2014 ford mustang?
dillin  Jul 11, 2022
1 answer
A
This Rockford Fosgate P1683 Punch series 3 way speaker has too much tweeter protrusion sadly, Dillin. That means the midrange and tweeter that stick out of the center of the speaker stick out too far, and hit the factory grill. These Rockford Fosgate P1572 Punch series 5x7 speakers in the link below are the closet speaker that does fit both the Shaker and non Shaker mustangs rear deck location for 13-14, check them out! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_575P1572/Rockford-Fosgate-P1572.html

I am planning on getting these speakers to install into the front doors of my 2010 Ford f150 XLT Crew Cab, as well as some Rockford Fosgate Prime R1525X2 speakers for the rear doors. Do I also need to install an amp?

A
I installed 4 Rockford Fosgate Punch P1683 speakers in all 4 doors on my 2006 ford Escape. It was a big improvement over the OEM speakers. Then i installed a Kenwood Head Unit and it really brought out the sound in the new speakers.
ricky  Aug 31, 2016
A
I didn't need to get an app for my 2008 f150 limited due to having the navigation system that has an internal amp and the truck has the factory sub box under the crew cab seat. The speakers sound great, though.
jeff  Aug 31, 2016
A
Absolutely. I have these in the front doors of my ranger and some Kenwood 3 ways in the back with a 40 watt per channel 4 channel amp and those speakers absolutely came alive. The normal head unit wattage isn't enough to get the good quality sound, You start creeping into the distorted range. Hope this helps....Larry

Q
Are the P1683 true 6x8 speakers?
gary  Mar 24, 2016
2 answers
A
They were the correct replacement for my ford Ranger 6x8's. unscrewed factory speakers, used the plugs adapters that came free so no need to splice wires and put the new ones in the place of the old ones. Work perfect
rocky  Aug 29, 2017
A
I would say they are. Direct fitment for 2001 Ford Mustang. No modifications needed.
david  Mar 25, 2016
Q
I am considering these for my 2014 Ford F150. The truck has factory installed tweeters in the A posts. Can I assume this means the radio has a crossover built into it, which is routing high frequency sound to the tweeter? If so, it doesn't seem to make sense to install speakers with tweeters. Am I thinking incorrectly about this?
robert  Dec 25, 2015
4 answers
A
It depends on what your looking for more bass or just richer sound factory speakers won't do much. If you want more bass then look at a powered sub .
brandon l  Dec 27, 2015
A
The crossover on component speakers & 2 way or 3 way speakers is built into the speaker. Yes it is only highs going to your tweeters. The crossover in your stereo will separate your sub output from your other speakers.
barton  Dec 27, 2015
A
IF your unit can be adjusted to direct all frequency to all the speakers then you should be good. I would say look up the manual on how to basically do what a crossover does in subwoofers. The frequency can be forced out of specific iutputs. Or have a unity distribution, then the speakers handle what they were designed for. These are great speakers. Start with the manual of your head unit. My thoughts... Vinman
vincent  Dec 27, 2015
A
I would think your assumption is correct, since my factory tweeters still produce sound with the addition of these speakers. I cannot say for sure if the tweeters in the Rockford speakers produce any sound, but they are a big improvement over the factory Sony speakers that came out.

Q
What size female connectors do the Rockford Fosgate P-1683's require?
tyler  Nov 24, 2015
2 answers
A
I Don't recall what size they are, but if you pick up a set of the smallest and next size-up co n newton's at your local autoparts store, you should have it covered.
m shane  Nov 24, 2015
A
One of the female connectors is the standard size. The 2nd female connector is smaller, but not the very small size, so I'd call that one medium in size. Hope this helps.

Q
Has anyone tried to mount these in the front door panel of a 2007 Mustang GT or similar year? I looked through the manual of these and they are .08 inches deeper then the ones that do fit in the front door and 8 hundredths of an inch is not that much

Hey Jerry P, I don't know if this statement is going to help.the speakers are great but I put them in a Ford Explorer,if you get them working working you'll feel them in your chest.good luck
alfred  Sep 15, 2015
A
I mounted them in my 2014 Mustang (base). There is no problem with the depth in mine. There was a small modification needed to get them to fit in the factory bracket, though. I had to remove part of the lip that the speakers mounted to. Hard to describe but when you go to put them in you'll understand... I first scored the plastic with a sharp knife and then snapped the lip off (part of one; there's 2) then used high density weather stripping on the mounting surface of the speaker; a pro would have used sound deadening mat, but this was way cheaper. If the budget allows, might I recommend Alpine Type-R. I am moving my punches to the rear deck and installing type Rs in the door next week.

Q
I bought these P1683's for my Ford F-150 and love them. I am using a Kenwood DDX-419 head unit, and I am a little fuzzy on both the unit's and speakers' crossovers. Do these speakers have built-in crossovers? If they do, what will the crossover selection on the head unit do for me? Thanks in advance for any input.

Thank you very much for your information!
dan a.  May 12, 2014

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: The P1683 speaker's crossover is built in and splits the frequencies between the woofer, tweeter, and super tweeter in the speaker. There is no adjustment necessary on the speaker. Within the radio you have high and low pass filter settings. The high pass filter will allow you to filter bass out of the speakers; this is commonly done if you are also running subwoofers or smaller speakers that don't produce bass very well. The 6x8 speakers you have can handle a full range signal and I would just set that to "Through" The low-pass filter will allow you set the bass cut off for subwoofers. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.

Q
Running 4 of these fosgates with a jvc kdx250 head unit . Enough power or do i need an amp ?
michael  Feb 10, 2014
1 answer
A
These speakers will work fine with your receiver. However, to get the best performance from them, you will want to add an amplifier. If you are interested in looking at an amp, then I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences between the amp models and help you make the best choice for your system.
