About the Rockford Fosgate P16-S

Serious Punch

Rockford Fosgate's Punch Series P16-S component speaker system is a powerful upgrade from factory sound. Using a mineral-filled injection-molded polypropylene cone, the 6" woofer delivers substantial, accurate sound. Rockford Fosgate's signature VAST surround technique also expands the surface area of the cone, giving you better bass response than comparable speakers.

A separate 1" dome tweeter brings your music to life with clear, extended highs, and Rockford Fosgate includes hardware for flush- or surface-mounting each tweeter.

Rockford Fosgate P16-S

Rockford Fosgate hides this system's crossovers inside the woofer basket so you have less work to do during installation.

Streamlined installation

With most component systems, finding room for the crossovers in your doors or dash can be a chore. Rockford Fosgate simplifies the installation process by integrating the system's crossovers in the woofer baskets. Rockford Fosgate has also souped up their woofer baskets with their friendly FlexFit design. Rather than only providing rigid screw holes that may not always match up to your factory speaker opening, the FlexFit basket design uses slots on the outer edge of the woofer basket for an easier match when things don't line up perfectly.

Installation note: The inline crossover in this component system is built into the woofer, so you'll need to connect the tweeter directly to the woofer. Depending on your vehicle, you may need to extend the speaker wires from the tweeter location to the woofer.

Product Research

Features

Injection-Molded Polypropylene Woofers: The woofer cones are mineral filled, injection-molded polypropylene. This molding process assures a uniform cone thickness for superior linearity and clarity. It is also light weight and rigid for decreased distortion and improved bass response.

Klippel Verified: The Klippel distortion analyzer, a device that uses a laser and sophisticated software to do large-scale analysis of drivers in motion, lets Rockford Fosgate optimize the speaker's motor structure, voice coil alignment, and suspension to yield the best possible performance.

VAST Surround: The Vertical Attach Surround Technique (VAST) increases a speaker's effective radiating cone area without increasing the size of the basket.

FlexFit Basket: The FlexFit frame utilizes slots (where possible) instead of single screw sized holes; allowing slight adjustment of the speaker when mounted.

Size Classification Note: Rockford Fosgate calls this size woofer a 6". Because its measurements match traditional industry standard 6-1/2" speakers, and it fits traditional 6-1/2" applications, Crutchfield has typically referred the P-16S as a 6-1/2". Please enter your vehicle information to confirm fit.

PEI Dome Tweeters: The 1" dome tweeters are made of Poly-Ether-Imide (PEI); PEI is a polymer film that produces a wide soundstage for superior imaging.

Mounting: The tweeters have multiple mounting configurations; choose flush or angled surface mount. The surface mount housing can be positioned at a 10° or 30° angle. Depending on the mount used, the installed dimensions are:

  Flush Surface 10° Surface 30°
Mounting Height 0.4460" 1.092" 1.340"
Mounting Depth 0.912" Screw Depth Screw Depth
Frame Diameter 2.357" N/A N/A
Cutout Diameter 1.75" N/A N/A
Frame Width N/A 2.126" 2.126"
Frame Depth N/A 2.151" 2.144"

Crossovers: The high-pass crossovers are integrated into the baskets of the woofers and the tweeters are wired to a second set of terminals on the woofer using the included wire. The crossover slope is 12dB per octave.

Speaker Terminals: These speakers have 0.25" wide positive (+) terminals and 0.187" wide negative (-) terminals, which are too large for the vehicle-specific speaker harnesses Crutchfield supplies for many vehicle applications. We recommend that a pack of assorted female quick slides (item number 120FQS10PK, sold separately) be purchased and spliced to the harnesses to adapt them to the speaker terminals.

Customer Q&A

Q
I want to know if I can install the tweeters flush mount without the grill and if come with the Rockford Fosgate logo like the 6-1/2" speaker, or without the logo like the P16-S combo that appear on the Rockford Fosgate web page, that I like more?
ramon  Feb 20, 2021
1 answer
A
You will have to install the tweeters with the grille and will not have the logo at the bottom because you can't install these without the grille. To clarify on Rockford's website the second picture of the logo is the 6 1/2" speaker and not the tweeter.

Q
Do the tweeters need to be installed with the speakers or can i use the speakers without plugging in the tweeters?
brandon  Jan 02, 2020

A
No. If you're looking for speakers with out the tweeters look for the p16 with the tweeter built in. The tweeter and the mid are to work together.
taylor  Jan 15, 2020
A
i mean, you don't need to plug in the tweeters for the speakers to work but its going to sound weird without the high frequency sound in your music.
jacob  Jan 14, 2020
A
You could run the woofer by itself but it sounds better with the tweeters all it is is a jumper connected to the tweeters you could eliminate that if you want
john m  Jan 14, 2020
A
I'm using mine as midrange deck lid speakers without the tweeter in my Prizm. Works just fine that way. Also using 6.5 inch 3 way Rockfords in my doors with a Rockford amp and sub. No complaints.....

Q
do you have to drill a hole to mount the tweeters ?
doug  Oct 10, 2018

A
Like he said if you already have factory tweeters, in the door or in the a-pillar, you can just hot glue the new ones in. No drilling needed if you are replacing the same size tweeter as factory
jesse  Jun 01, 2020
A
If you don't already have door tweeters then yes you will have to drill a hole if you want them to be recessed in the door.
jason  Oct 15, 2018
A
I ended up having to drill 1 hole.

Q
A friend gave me a pair of RF P-16S, but no matter what I do I can not get a nice balanced sound. The highs are just too overwhelming and no matter what combination of setting I perform either on the head unit, amp, EQ, xover, WHAT EVER!!!!, I even changed out the tweeters with the Polks I had with the previous speakers and the balance is always towards the highs. Maybe the internal crossover is the problem? My question is, do you have a recommendation for a set of 6.5 2 way components that are more balanced that these RF's? thanks!!!

You can install attenuationators to the tweeters to knock off -3db

Thanks for your question. For information on comparing different speaker models I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences and help you make the best choice for your system and your budget.

Q
If I'm getting two pairs of these, one pair for the front doors and one pair for the back, what kind of amp would I need to power them? Also, how are the tweeters powered? I'm helpless when it comes to car audio!

A
These don't need an amp but they are so much better with one. I also have two sets and powered them all with a Rockford fosgate p400.4 amp. It's rated at 50watt rms x4 but it says on the birth sheet it actually puts out around 70 rms. I hooked them to my head unit first and yeah it was good but the amp is better. No head unit puts out clean 60 watts rms
jesse  Jun 01, 2020
A
any high powered deck should be enough to power them, but a 60 watt amp per channel is what they are rated at. The tweeters plug into the midwoofer, so no separate amp needed for the tweeters. My son loves these speakers. He paired his with a rockford prime R150.
lyle  Dec 27, 2015
A
You don't need a amp for these speakers. And the tweeter connects to the mid range speaker for power. Depending which stereo deck you have it should have plenty of power. I installed these and two 4x6 speakers in my daughters truck connected to her Kenwood deck and they scream.
ronald  Dec 27, 2015
Q
I'm stepping up from the prime to these, instead of running power from my head unit im going to get an amp, should i run 2 amps one seperate for tweeters from the woofers to get a more crisp sound, or just run amplifier to the woofers and run the tweeters off the woofer?
steven  Dec 13, 2015

A
One 4 channel amp is best. Use the built in crossover on the woofers. If you're only installing one pair then just a 2 channel amp.
jesse  Jun 01, 2020
A
The set is designed to manage the tweeters off of the woofers because of a built-in cross-over
johnny  Apr 06, 2016
A
Although I can't directly answer your question, I'm running both from the amp in the head unit, Pioneer AVH-4100NEX. The highs are distinctly crisp and clear for various types of music, from jazz to classical to pop.
dan  Dec 14, 2015
Q
Is the rms power listed based on both speakers combined or for the power of each speaker?
timothy  Dec 08, 2015
2 answers
A
Each speaker. Example, 100 watts rms would be 100 watts for speaker and tweeter. So you would need a 200 watt 2 channel amp
chad  Dec 08, 2015
A
Each component set mid and tweeter

Q
This says they are 6.5", but the RF website says they are 6.0". Why the difference?

I'm not sure why they do that.. this was a big deal for me as crutchfield says these speakers don't fit my car because they aren't true 6" speakers. But I looked at the specs and everything added up to me so I bought them anyway. Let it be known these fit perfectly in my 2015 Jetta with the adapters they supply for free.
jesse  Jun 01, 2020
A
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: It is because of how the speaker is measured. We actually measure and classify speakers by the bolt pattern of the basket, not by the size of the driver. They are actually using the size of the driver itself. It is really the same speaker we just measure it differently. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.

Q
Where are the crossovers? Are they built into the woofer?
rich  Jun 23, 2015

A
Yes, crossover is built into the woofer. It has two output tabs to connect the tweeters to. You will need to pull some wire through the door to the tweeter location.
