Priced per speaker

What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

The Best 8's Ever

Written By Lane, Ridgeland, MS on Sunday, April 29, 2007

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Like many others, I bought these speakers because of all the great reviews. I got 2 of these at an awsome Crutchfield price. I built a box with .6 cubic feet and stuffed it full of the Poly-Fill. I bought the Profile HMA-700 and wired the speakers in series. I absolutely cannot believe the bass these little 8" speakers put out and in such a small box. My box was 25"L x 13"H x 3 7/8 top depth x 7" bottom depth ((outside dimensions))-very small box but actually slightly more air than is recommended. I have them in a single cab Silverado and the sound is way way better than I expected. I made every person who has sat in my truck guess what I had for speakers before they looked. No one guessed 8s. If you build or buy the right box and put the power to them, you too will be amazed at what these 8s can do.. By far, the best $ of sound I have ever purchased. Oh yeah, and you cannot beat Crutchfield's sales or service!!!!

HUGE boom, TINY Sub.

Written By Josh, New Mexico on Friday, April 06, 2007

Well, I put these in my Porsche 944 replacing my single 12in sub.

I began listening to the first song I tested it on and when it hit, you could imagine the look on my face. Huge boom.. absolutely no distortion.. extremely loud.. and I only have about 70 watts going to each sub.

Good for you, Rockford Fosgate

Decent bass from small driver

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had a lot of different cheapo 8's and none have been as suprising as this pair. I always seem to put small enclosures in cars and never get the sound i want out of 8's. But this was different, these sound great!... Killer price on a pair too. I put these in a small sealed enclosure behind the seats of an 03 avalanche and it solved my bass problem. I have the original bose system and it ties in just fine.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Same as everybody else, I purchaced two of these subs because I wanted the most bang for the buck, with having limited space. The magnet cover is removable which makes them very low profile, so I could build two boxes to fit under my rear seat and leave enough room to fold down the midgate properly.

At first I wasn't too impressed with the subs; I built two sealed boxes and all of the base (wasn't even good base) was in the rear seat, and you couldn't hear it in the drivers seat. Just today I finished up making two very custom ported boxes. To maintain a low profile, I had to step the bottom of the box multiple times over the rear seat frame, giving me just about .5cf of volume per sub box. Using a 4" port pointed at the rear doors, the sound projects very nicely into the front seat without being overwhelming in the rear seat. The sound is very nice and so loud that I had to turn the amp down to about half gain. I kept the factory Bose stereo and purchaced the 800W Sony amplifier from Crutchfield with the line-in sensing so I didn't have to run a ground, and it worked out very well.

I recomend these subs very much (shakes my whole car) as long as you can build the best box for your space and vehicle. I am very happy with how well they do sound, expecially because I'm comming off of a very large stereo in my previous car,and my expectations weren't very high.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I finally realized what I had done after purchasing a vehicle with such a limited amount of space (frontier regular cab), I put myself on a mission to get some decent bass in it.

I went to several different retailers and they all basically told me it couldnt be done with the amount of space behind my seat.

This only further motivated me to get it done, and done right. I built my own sealed box to spec (about .3 cu ft per chamber) and purchased to of these subs. I decided to power them with a profile baja amp at 2 ohms so i ended up pushing each sub at 175 watts.

The sound I got practically left me speachless. They sounded good with basicalyl every type of music I through at them. I have to say though, they seriously bumped pretty well for what they are. My rear-view mirror was useless.

Please get these subs if you have limited space.

Rockford Fosgate 8 inch Punch Subs

Written By Mike Hansen, Flagstaff, Arizona on Saturday, November 11, 2006

I own a 96 GMC single cab pickup. I had two MTX 10"s in it and it sounded great but I am 6'5" so I need my leg room. I looked for some subs that didn't take up much room and would still sound great and not too expensive. The Fosgate 8 inch Punches were it. They fit in, with the seat all the way back. I would say the MTX's had more boom but the Fosgates come real close to matching them. I also have a more clean sound as the subs are tighter. These subs are definately worth it.

I Just put 4 of these behind the rear seat of my 2003 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab, now it was a very tight squeeze but they Sound VERY, VERY Good, again they don't hit as low as some of the bigger drivers but for their size they do pack a mighty PUNCH. I am running a RF P250.2 bridged for about 300 watts to them, they are wired in a series/parallel configuration for a 4 ohm mono load to the amp. For the money ROCKFORD FOSGATE STILL RULES AND ROCKS THE WORLD.

These little subs pound!! I built my own sealed enclosures to fit under the front seats of an 06 Scion xB, with an internal volume of .47 cubic feet. I have an amp pushing 100watts RMS to each sub and they sound amazing!! Well worth the money and fit in very small places! These subs sound better than some 10's I've heard but they dont hit the real low frequencies like a bigger sub would. 110% satified!!

I just bought two of these to replace my mono 10 in Pioneer sub. The sound quality is well beyond what I expected from 8 inch subs. They fit into a very small space and produce plenty of kick for the money. If you are into deep, low frequency bass, I would suggest going with two 10's because the eights lack the ultra-low frequence response. I was mainly a Pioneer guy, but now Rockford Fosgate will be my sub of choice. (Pioneer for everything else!!!)

These subs sound great. I have two of them powered by a profile 1200w amp which is way more output than I need. These subs handle alot of it and sound awsome. Great for a budget or to add some bass to your system. Highly recommended.

best bang for buck - 89 Toyo P/U

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a 89 Toyota pickup standard cab so room is pretty limited. I'm only running one woofer w/ a california amp and am pretty impressed with how well this thumps. Obv it's no 12" but it's enough to shake the mirrors and provide nice bass hits and extra sound. Outside the vehicle it's pretty noticeable, but I wasnt going for earth shattering bass.
If your looking for some more mild bass, this is for you.

I installed two of these in a Qlogic box under my back seat of my Toyota Tundra Access Cab. I have them connected to a Rockford Fosgate P3001 300W amp. These subs sound great an added more than enough bass for my truck. I listen mainly to heavy metal (Trapt, Mudvayne, etc.). You can feel the drum beats pound through your chest! Love these subs! Highly recommended for this type of setup.

Me and my dad installed these behind the seat of my 91 ranger powered by a Stereo Limited 250watt amp . I was not expecting what i get from these subs. I didnt expect much because they were 8's But man i was wrong they hit hard dont expect them to sound like 10's but if you have a limited amount of space get these and you wont be disapointed.

Kicks A$$

Written By West, Georgia on Wednesday, December 07, 2005

I bought just one of these with fairly neutral expectations. I figured it would add a little bit of bass to my existing component speaker system. I was WRONG! This thing hits like no 8" I've heard. I put it into a sealed enclosure I built with .241cu ft, and sealed it up perfectly and it really thumps. I'm pushing it with a Profile AP400 which does 200RMS, the sub takes 150. So I've got the gain set a little less than half way, and if I set the "loud" on my Pioneer DEH3700 HU to medium, this sub will hit hard as some ported 10's with the bass boost set to 0 on the amp. You'd have to see and hear to believe. I will say, that it is still an 8, so don't expect to be heard from 20 ft. away with the vehicle running, but if you throw this into a standard cab pickup, you will not be disappointed with just this one.

With this installed behind the seat of my '87 Toyota Pickup, I have no doubt it'd fit behind any small truck seat. From now on, I'm 100% Rockford Fosgate for subs.

I bought these, not to install in my car, but to install in my bookshelf speakers. (dont know if a wise choice)But i was very impressed. I loved the sound and the hard bass feeling that they provided. Until my brother blew them. But for what they cost, they are the best subs i have ever owned.

Rockin Little Subs

Written By Joe, Gallipolis Ferry, WV on Monday, June 06, 2005

I have a '94 Ford Ranger Ext Cab, so I needed something small to fit under the jump seats. I bought these subs because they were small and affordable. I did not expect the bass response I got from them. These subs hit very hard and low for an "economy" subwoofer. The only downfall to this sub is that it does not take very much power. Overall though, they are surprisingly good. I have and will continue to recommend these subs for someone wanting bass with a limited area for subs.

These sub's rock for the price! I have a 2005 Chevy Colorado and I made a small box to put under the seat and they thump. This helps out any system. I got them to add some extra sound to my system not to wake up the neighbors. These subs serve there purpose. i recommend these to anyone just wanting an extra boost to there system.

Enclosure Compatibility

Woofer: The cone is constructed of molded polypropylene. Polypropylene is lightweight and strong, giving the woofer high power handling and low distortion.

High Excursion Large Roll Surround: A large edge roll surround allows Punch woofers to produce 20% more linear excursion than standard surrounds, resulting in more bass output.

Parabolic Triangular Cone Geometry Support System: By bonding a polypropylene parabolic dust cap of equivalent size to the cone body, a balanced triangular structure is created. This system reduces piston flex and eliminates cone distortion.

Linear Spider: A compliant linear spider improves mechanical stability under high excursion, maintaining consistent excursion characteristics. This eliminates the need for a "break-in period."

Spider Support Ring: This integrated ring increases the bonding surface area between the voice coil former and spider, establishing a stronger joint. The result is increased mechanical power handling under high power/high excursion situations.

Anodized Aluminum Voice Coil Former: Aluminum voice coil formers offer superior heat dissipation over other commonly used materials. The hard-anodized finish increases the former strength. These two factors combine to improve the overall power handling characteristics of the subwoofer.

Precision Stamped CRS Basket: Reinforced cold roll steel basket legs dampen unwanted resonance for better bass coupling.

Removable Magnet Cover: The cosmetic magnet cover can be removed when additional mounting clearance is required. With the magnet cover installed, the woofer has the following dimensions:

  • Magnet Diameter: 5.823"
  • Depth as top: 4.072"

Spring Posts: The heavy-duty spring posts will accept pin connectors and bare wire.

Concealing Ring: Once the subwoofer is mounted, the concealing ring can be installed to hide the mounting screws, giving the subwoofer a finished look.

Enclosure Compatibility

Recommended Sealed Box Volume: The sealed box sizes recommended by Rockford Fosgate range from 0.15 cu/ft to 0.35 cu/ft. Within this range, the ideal size recommended by Rockford Fosgate is 0.25 cu/ft, so this is the enclosure recommended by Crutchfield.

Recommended Vented Box Volume: The vented box sizes recommended by Rockford Fosgate range from 0.5 cu/ft to 0.75 cu/ft. Within this range, the ideal size recommended by Rockford Fosgate is 0.65 cu/ft, so this is the enclosure recommended by Crutchfield. One 2" diameter x 5.9" long port should be used with a 0.65 cu/ft enclosure.

Recommended Single Reflex Bandpass Volume: Rockford Fosgate's enclosure chart lists three compatible bandpass enclosures. The highlighted bandpass enclosure has a sealed chamber volume of 0.2 cu/ft, a vented chamber volume of 0.22 cu/ft and a single 3" diameter x 16.25" long port. The smallest recommended enclosure has a sealed chamber volume of 0.15 cu/ft, a vented chamber volume of 0.2 cu/ft and a single 3" diameter x 19" long port. The largest recommended enclosure has a sealed chamber volume of 0.3 cu/ft, a vented chamber volume of 0.3 cu/ft and a single 3" diameter x 15.75" long port.
