About the Rockford Fosgate Punch P1000X1bd

Buck Pomerantz

Big power for your sub or sub system

Rockford Fosgate's Punch P1000X1bd subwoofer amp can produce up to 1000 watts RMS, giving you plenty of clean power for your rhythm track. And the P1000X1bd can drive a 1-ohm load, so you can power multiple subs without any trouble. A low-pass filter keeps the high notes away from your sub, while a subsonic filter helps you rein in runaway boom. The Punch bass boost lets you add some of that boom back into the mix when it's needed.

Once again, Rockford Fosgate steps away from the crowd with their C.L.E.A.N. technology (Calibrated Level Eliminates Audible Noise) — a setup system that ensures your music will sound as clean and powerful as possible. It works like this: first download the setup tones from Rockford Fosgate, then play the tone, adjust the receiver volume until a red clip light on the amp goes out, then turn the amp gain up until a blue light comes on. It's that simple — your amplifier will be perfectly set to match your receiver's output. When your receiver reaches maximum clean volume, you'll get maximum clean power from your Power amp. At quiet listening levels, you'll hear less background noise and more of your music.

Keeps an eye on things while playing

If that blue light turns solid red while you're playing music, the amp's telling you that your source is distorting and you should turn it down, or risk damage to your gear. The optional PLC2 remote level control also doubles as a clip indicator, so you can see from the front seat if your music's clipping. The amp's built-in computer keeps tabs on the output current, ensuring that plunging speaker impedances (they change during play) or even a short circuit won't hurt anything.

Maintaining coolness raises efficiency and lowers distortion

Rockford Fosgate's Dynamic Thermal Management system uses forced air to dissipate heat evenly across the amp and out through the high-mass heatsink, efficiently drawing heat away from vital internal parts. Their proprietary MEHSA cooling process maximizes the heat transfer from the MOSFET devices to the heatsink, allowing the heat to escape more readily, so the transistors stay cooler and work better.

Features

Class bd Design: Rockford Fosgate bd topology is a patented design, integrating a technology that is more efficient than typical class A/B amps, and has lower distortion than typical class D designs. Punch bd amplifiers are 75-80% efficient, while class A/B amps are typically less than 50% efficient. This means, more power from your amplifier with less drain on your vehicles electrical and charging system.

CEA-2006 Compliant: CEA-2006 is a system of testing and measurement methods for mobile audio amplifiers. This voluntary standard advocates a uniform method for measuring an amplifier's RMS power output and signal-to-noise ratio. The criteria for measuring power uses a DC input voltage of 14.4 volts and the RMS power output is measured with 1% or less Total Harmonic Distortion plus noise (THD+N) over a frequency range of 20 Hz to 20 kHz (for full range amplifiers). Signal-to-Noise ratio is measured in weighted absolute decibels (dBA) at a reference of 1 watt into 4Ω. CEA-2006 allows consumers to compare car amplifiers and receivers on an equal basis. Using CEA-2006 criteria, the Rockford Fosgate P1000X1bd is rated as follows:

  • Power Output:
    • 4Ω: 300 watts x 1-channel
    • 2Ω: 600 watts x 1-channel
    • 1Ω: 1000 watts x 1-channel
  • Signal to Noise Ratio: 80 dBA (100 dB at rated power)

Cast Aluminum Heatsink: The cast aluminum heatsink dissipates heat generated by the amplifier's circuitry. The inherent advantage of casting provides a 30% cooling improvement over conventional extrusion heatsink designs.

MEHSA³ (Maximum Efficiency Heat Sink Application-3rd Generation): MEHSA is a Rockford Fosgate proprietary process that increases the heat transfer from the MOSFET devices to the heatsink. The multi-layer insulated metal MEHSA substrate operates with minimal thermal resistance, spreading heat both downward and outward to quickly dissipate heat from each device across the heatsink. This allows greater power output, enhanced thermal stability, and maximum reliability.

NOMAD (NOn-Multiplying Advanced Decision): NOMAD is an intelligent protection circuit that uses an analog computer to make real time decisions regarding temperature, voltage, current and impedance. The amplifier is protected without limiting sound output unless needed.

DSM (Discrete Surface Mount): High speed robotics are used in the manufacturing process to place 1% tolerance parts and large board traces. DSM improves the efficiency of the circuit, decreases cross-talk from other discrete components and lowers operating temperature.

CLEAN Set-Up: Rockford's integrated level setting technology, CLEAN (Calibrated Level Eliminates Audible Noise), replaces sophisticated test equipment with input/output clip LEDs, allowing you to match the source unit's output to the amp's gain, and optimize the amp's output. The input clip indicator works in conjunction with the audio source volume, illuminating red when the source reaches it's clipping point. The output clip indicator works in conjunction with the input level dial on the amp, illuminating the appropriate color depending on the audio content used for the setup.

Power and Protection LEDs: The LEDs are located on top of the amplifier. A blue Power LED illuminates when the amplifier is turned on. A red Thermal LED illuminates if the amplifier overheats. The yellow Protect LED illuminates if a short circuit or too low an impedance is detected at the speaker connections. When any of the protection circuits engage, the amp automatically shuts down until the problem is corrected.

Balanced Differential Inputs: Differential inputs eliminate noise picked up by signal cables by measuring the voltage of both the (+) and (-) input signal, then subtracting the voltage common to both conductors (noise), resulting in only the clean signal entering the amplifier.

Infrasonic Filter: The infrasonic filter is fixed at 28 Hz with a slope of 12dB/octave. This high-pass filter is designed to prevent frequencies below the audio range from being applied to the subwoofer, or reproduced by the amplifier. This improves your subwoofer performance and power handling, particularly in vented enclosures.

Controls

Input Level: To accommodate the varying range of signal levels from today's factory and aftermarket radios, the input level is adjustable from 150mV to 12V.

Crossover: The amplifier's internal low-pass crossover has a 12 dB/octave slope. The crossover point is variable from 50 Hz to 250 Hz. The crossover cannot be bypassed (it's not a full range amp).

Punch EQ: The Punch EQ bass boost circuit is continuously variable from 0 to +18 dB, centered at 45 Hz.

Remote Punch Level: When activated, this switch allows the use of a optional remote Punch Level Controller (PLC2).

Infrasonic Filter: A switch allows you to turn the infrasonic filter off if you prefer.

Connections

Power Connections: The power and ground terminals are nickel-plated captive c-clamp wire connectors and will accommodate up to 4-gauge wire. An external 140-amp fuse (not included) must be installed on the power wire. The remote turn-on terminal will accept up to 12-gauge wire. A Phillips or flat-head screwdriver (not supplied) is required to tighten/loosen the terminals.

Speaker Connections: The two speaker outputs are internally wired in parallel, making it easy to connect two subwoofers. The speaker terminals are also nickel-plated captive c-clamps and will accept up to 8-gauge wire. A Phillips or flat-head screwdriver (not supplied) is required to tighten/loosen the terminals.

Signal Input: The RCA inputs will accept either a line-level or speaker-level input. A speaker-level signal can be connected using a Speaker Wire to RCA adapter (sold separately). When using a speaker-level input signal, the auto turn-on feature is active and the remote turn-on terminal becomes a 12 volt output to turn on/off up to two additional amplifiers or other components.

Line Level Output: The amplifier has a pair of RCA line level pass-thru outputs to feed another amplifier. The pass-thru output is passive (the same signal present at the amp's input) and the amp's crossover has no effect on the signal.

Punch Level Control (PLC): An RJ-45 jack is provided for connecting an optional wired remote PLC2 (item number 575PLC2, sold separately), allowing remote control of the output level of the amplifier. A second RJ-45 jack is the PLC output, used to daisy-chain additional amplifiers controlled by a single remote.

Note: Previous model PEQ, Punch Bass, and Para-Punch remotes will not work with this amp.

Q
I have 2 Rockford Fosgate P3D2-10 Punch 10" P3 2-Ohm DVC Subwoofers and want to run the amp at 2ohm with these subs. Will this amp overpower these subs?
bryce  Feb 09, 2023
1 answer
A
No this amplifier would not overpower these subwoofers, wired in parallel, they would still be in the suggested power wattage from Rockford getting 300 watts each.
arielle  Feb 09, 2023 (Staff)
Q
Will this amp be able to push 2 alpine r2 8's at 2 ohm's or would i need to go bigger on an amp ?
chris  Sep 07, 2022
1 answer
A
Greetings Chris, and thank you for your question. Yes it will power two Type R 8s nicely. Each sub is looking for 150-350, and the Rockford Fosgate amp will deliver at least 300 watts to each.

Will this be too much for Rockford fosgate p3 shallows?
raulm81  Apr 05, 2022

A
Depending on the size, 8,10,12. I believe the 12's are rated at 400 rms and 200 watts per voice coil. I think you would be good. Just remember RF amplifiers are always underrated, if it says 1000 it will 99.9 percent be pushing more than it says.

Will this push 2 sundown x8 800rms each wired at 1 ohm?
parka  Feb 26, 2022
2 answers
A
It will run those subs nicely, but u will roughly only have 500 watts rms going to each sub because this amp is a 1000 watt rms x 1 ohm mono amp. I run two pioneer 12" subs with this amp and it powers them nicely, I have mine wired at 4 ohms right now though not 1 ohm.
ben  Feb 27, 2022
A
My birth sheet on this amp is 1378 watts at 1ohm. If those subs are 800 RMS, you would wire two D4's to bring you to a 1 ohm load. You could then run up to 1600 RMS to those subs. If you have the electrical to run around 14 volts you'd be pushing those subs well with this amp, but you can certainly throw more at them.

Not to state the obvious, but have you checked the remote turn on lead for a bad connection at the head unit side and the amp side? If its good, sounds like an internal amp issue and needs to be a warranty claim...

So I have 2 P3D4-15's they just blew out my R1200-1D after about a year, they no longer make that model and I'm looking for a replacement. Would this amp suffice/ work optimally or better than my 1200-1D? Thanks for any feedback! My current setup in my F150 is 2 P1683's and a T252-S comp speaker running to a R2-500x4 amp which was connected to my 1200-1D prior to it blowing which powered and ran my 2 P3D4-15's

Q
I am deciding between the new p2 1200x1 prime or the punch 1000x1bd. The prime has more watts. I don't want to lose volume while paying more. Im running two P3D4 12s. How would the punch 1000w be better? Thanks
torrence  Apr 20, 2021
2 answers
A
The punch line is made with better components then the prime. Same as the power line is a little better then the punch line. My punch1000 top dyno number is a few short of 1300 and moves my p3 12s just fine. I bought the punch over the prime also because the efficiency was better on the punch (pulls less power from the vehicle to make the same power as the prime amp)
michael  May 05, 2021
A
The dyno sheet actually says it runs at a little over 1400 and I'm running 2 10" solobarics and they sound great and are really loud

Q
What is the recommended wiring for 2 p3d212's on this amp? I currently have 1 going to channel a and the other b. It doesn't seem to be that powerful. In my other truck I have a prime 750 mono amp with the same 12s and it is out doing this amp. Should I put both speakers on A or B? Was hoping for so much more out of the p1000.
robert  Dec 24, 2020
5 answers
A
Channel A and B are the same channel this just makes it easier to hook up 2 subs. I would need more info like are how are your subs wired . Because those are the wrong subs for both your amps. If you are trying to run the amps at full power. You can only run those subs as either 4ohm per sub(series) or 1ohm(parallel) so wired together your load on the amp would be 2ohm or 0.5ohm. Now depending you might just have something out of phase that would cause one to cancel the other. I would check the wiring to make sure it is correct.
joseph  Dec 26, 2020
A
You need a 1 ohm load to get full power
shon  Dec 24, 2020
A
I have mine wire down to 1ohm and I'm currently pushing 2 p3d2 10s. But the 1ohm is key to getting the most out of it. Make sure and follow the instruction on the set up to eliminate clipping and damage to the amp as well as the speakers.
phillip  Dec 24, 2020
A
Wire the voice coils of each speaker in parallel for 2 ohms per speaker. Then you can connect one speaker to A and one to B. This is a mono amp, so the outputs are the same. (It's like having an extra set of terminals). This will give you a 1 ohm load at the amp, and the most power.
john  Dec 24, 2020
A
With your current setup with woofers you can only run the woofers @ 2ohm which is not the full power of that amp you would want to run with(2) P3D412 then you would be at 1ohm which that amp would put out more power. Also make sure you are using 4AWG OFC wire not 4AWG CCA.
robert  Dec 24, 2020
Q
I think this is ok from researching a while but Iâ??m gonna ask anyways... I just bought 3 JL10TW3â??s and this punch 1000x1. By the time itâ??s all wired up the amp will be wired to 1.33 ohms. Is that ok? I know they push way more than they say and they say 1000 at 1ohm and 600 at 2ohm so I figure the birthsheet will say anywhere from 1300 to 1600 watts rms. So I figured between 1 and 2 ohm is ok....

Hi, yes I am running a 1 ohm load on this amp, and it is a BEAST! When it comes to amplifiers, just as long as you do not go below an amplifier's rated impedance load, you will be fine. This particular amplifier has a minimum impedance of 1 ohm. Enjoy!

My birth sheet has it at 1425W at 1ohm. You can always drop the gain and let it have plenty of head room. It'll run cooler too. This will easily run a pair of P2
matthew  May 06, 2020

I doubt it. It's better to have too much power for a speaker than not enough. Don't turn the amp up so much it clips. I currently am using this amp to drive a single massive audio 6 inch (I think it's rated at 200 W rms) sub in a t-line enclosure. And it sounds awesome!

If you can get the load down to 1 ohm absolutely. I run this app at 1 ohm with a single 12" and it's ungodly loud. This amp will surely run 3 10's no problem. To give you an idea my test sheet rms power was 1398 watts and peak power is at 4000 watts which is what you'd expect from a Rockford fosgate amplifier.

With this being a 600x1 amp with dual inputs wired in parallel, does that mean with two subs hooked up I would get 600 to each at 2 ohms, or 600 split?
alex  Sep 20, 2016

Q
This amp says 600 rms at 2 ohms, but the manufactures specs say 500 rms. Why is there a difference in your rating and theirs?
alexander pike  Sep 03, 2016
1 answer
A
Good catch, Alexander. I also see on Rockford Fosgate's website where they list the power output at 500 watts RMS x 1 at 2-ohm. However the owner's manual for the Punch P1000X1bd (both on our website and Rockford's website) states 600 watts RMS x 1 at 2-ohm; so I would assume that's a mis-print on their site. We are looking into this further and will update our website as necessary. Thanks again for the head's up! My bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=159

Q
Would a digital bass processor compliment this amps sound quickly? Or is it not necessary for this particular amp?
poecheezy  Aug 28, 2016
1 answer
A
If you are adding the amp to a factory stereo, a bass processor can certainly help but is not required for use with this amplifier. The Punch P1000X1bd features the "speaker level inputs" and "signal sensing turn-on" so an external processor/converter is not required for connection to a factory stereo. I hope that helps! That depends on many factors, but idealy you should base it off the rms of the subwoofer. If you plan one hooking this amp up to a single subwoofer you would want one that has a rating of 800rms to 1000 rms. I can tell you that I have the same amp hooked up to a 900watt rms dc audio level 3 subwoofer and the sub is being pushed to its limit without having the amp clip(meaning the amp pushes a clean singal)

Thanks for your question. For information on selecting the best sub for your amp I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences between the models and help you make the best choice for your system.

Q
I recently bought this amp and during instillation I am certain one of two things happened. I either A, fried the amp, or B fried the fuse in the amp. Problem is I can't seem to locate the fuse in the amp, I was wondering if someone could tell me where I'm supposed to be looking for this mystery fuse?, thank you
