What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

I have two of these boys esconced in a double box in the trunk of my '05 Buick LaCrosse, and the difference they've made in the just regular ole' music I listen to, say, Chicago, Celine, Amy Grant, is astronomical. The bass lines in Whitney Houston's "All The Man I Need" are felt throughout the entire car!! Very nice! So, there ya go. They do a remarkable job for a very inexpensive price.

Pros: The beefy appearance, the clean lines of the speaker itself. Nicely made.

Cons: Nothing.

Reliable and hard hitting

I got these subs back in April 2008. One of them blew over 3 years later. For a sub this cheap, I got alot of quality use out of them. I am now going over to Kicker though. I would have replaced the Punch P1 12" but they dont make the exact model I have anymore. I would recommend this subwoofer for long term quality use.

Got these buy 1 get one free. Built a box, carpeted it, and hooked up to an old Punch 150 hd I had in high school and low and behold old school power rocks a new school sub. Very loud and decent hit. Won't break ribs but shakes the mirrors. Only running one, the other is a spare I guess. Would reccomend these for someone who wants some thump that won't break your pocket book. 1.07 cu. ft. sealed enclosure sounds good.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my first set of subs, i have them wired parallel to a rockford fosgate P300-1 amp
in a ported 1.36 cubic foot (per chamber) box that i built.. They dont hit as hard as i
thought they would, but they are super loud. I have them set to -7 decibels on my
reciever with no bass boost, and my amp gain turned down low. My mom can hear them
pound from about a quarter mile a way with them cranked up a little. If you want a great
brand of subs that sound great and unbeatable price, these are the way to go. If youre
going to buy anything audio, go with Crutchfield. Their customer service in unmatched.

Put them in a truck style box with 0.82 cu ft. for each sub. Stuffed the box with poly-fill
and they sound great. This is my second pair of Prime 1 subs and am very pleased.
Highly recommend.

Can't beat the price

Written By Hamilton, Madison,AL on Sunday, January 02, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent subs for the price. They are more than enough for a small hatchback. They
don't have the low frequency power of their dual voice coil siblings, but a sealed box
holding 2 of them is more than enough for my application.
The rubber\plastic magnet cover is entirely unnecessary, no one can see the back of
them when they are mounted and it takes away from air space in my box.

Unbelivable.... i went from having two alpine type R's then i look on crutchfield, i have two of these bad boys, but only one hooked up in my Mazda 3. powered by a alpine 500w Vpower amp, this thing blows away the type R by a long run. great sounding, a very good qualitly sub, built to last and can withstand alot of bass boost. i recommend this sale to anyone. you wont regret it. not even a single sub let alone if u buy two.

Great Subs

Written By Forrest, San Antonio, TX on Friday, April 02, 2010

I purchased these a few weeks ago for my 2001 Ford Explorer. I built a box to 1.02 cubic feet. I am running them with the Fosgate p.300.1 running 150 rms to each subs wired to 2 ohms. These are the first subs Ive purchased and man am I blown away. I saw a review saying the mirror shakes well my entire car shakes with these things. They are all could have expected and then some. Crutchfield was a great help, and I am extremely satisfied. I would most definitely reccomend these to anyone looking simply to add some low end, or if you like your car to make a ton of noise.

Cheap Bass

Written By Timothy, Texas on Wednesday, January 27, 2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the price, hard to beat. Mounting depth "Without the huge plastic magnet cover Rockford used to make it look like a better sub" is 5 3/8" so it will fit behind most pickup seats. Bass is actually very defined and musical, its just not a very efficient sub. I am using a T1500-1 bd, more than enough power, with each sub in a 1cu ft sealed enclosure, and truthfully, i'm not very impressed. As the title says "Cheap Bass"
As always though, Cruthfield was very helpful, and shipping very fast!

Wow...for the price, these things rock. I have 2 of them in a custom sealed box for my '08 Silverado and even though the box is a little under the specs, I put some polyfill in there and they hit hard for down firing subs.

These magnet covers are monsterous so if you have a shallow box, you might need to give them some wiggle room.

Better than expected

Written By Jacob, Lincoln, NE on Wednesday, September 23, 2009

Wow these things are amazing for the price. i put them in a custom box, built just barely under requirements, but these things hit. I broke them in and right now i only have 150 watts rms running to both right now until i get my new amp but even at half power these shake everything!

Ok... I bought 2 of these about a year ago and it was the cold minnesota weather. they didn't sound the greatest...which i expected during the cold. But when it finally warmed up these things were BOOMIN they shook everything including the doors at a local store. Everything in my car shook like nuts. It was CRAZY. They sound awesome but dont overpower them or you will have serious issues, but a GREAT deal for the money. In the end i overpowered them and ended up sending them back to crutchfield (i would never buy any electronics anywhere else!!! they are super great and easy to get along with:)) and i missed them so bad that i had to buy 2 different ones cause i obviously overpowered them... but i highly recommend fo sho!!!

got two of these subs in a ported box hooked up to a rockford fosgate p400-2 amplifier and a kenwood excelon head unit. oh my god do these things get it done. they are truly amazing. trunk and license plate rattles SOO much and the bass is so deep and clear and accurate. you gotta have these. i got them in a pontiac sunfire sedan. all of your mirrors are useless not just the rearview mirror. point the subs towards the inside of the car rather than towards the back of the car. deffinately get this amp though it powers them great. gain is bout 3/4 the way up. my sub levels on my deck is at +3 out of +15 and my bass at -1 out of +8. but for anyone debating on these and another sub, go with these. save money and get the same if not better quality.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These subs are very high quality and have a great price. I have 2 of these subs in a ported box with a P300-1 amp and they are LOUD. Although they are only 150 rms they are very loud. These are louder than my friends 2 alpine type e's which are 250 rms. These make my rear view mirror useless. I can be heard from about a block with these. The output is very deep, loud and clear.

Now I know why they name them "Punch"

Written By lacroserocks, North Carolina on Thursday, September 25, 2008

2 in my '97 Honda Civic LX Using Pioneer DEH-4000UB deck and Alpine MRP-M450 to run them. Each has their own box (1.8cu.ft and 2.5 x 2.5 x 5in. port; used port calculator online).

Make sure you do the one week break in period. After the break in, I turned them up. Amp is only half way, but these things PUNCH hard. Clear sound that hits you right in the stomache.

Friends have heard me few blocks away and, while at a stop light, made my friends rear view mirror shake a little (he was behind me). Sitting infront of a friends house, I made the pictures in his room that were on the wall vibrate and his room was on the far side of the house. Set off an evo's car alarm 40 feet away.

If you get these don't even think about using your rear view mirror. All you will see is a blur. My rear deck speakers have come unplugged many times because the subs make the connections vibrate too much.

I suggest these subs to anyone looking for the most boom for their buck.

The deal was amazing, especially for those of us on a limited budget. In my old truck, i had 3 MTX 10"s, which provided plenty of bass, but when i got a new truck i decided to upgrade my system. These are great subs, with plenty of power, and absolutely blow away the much-more-expensive MTX subs. These will blow away just about anybody in your high school parking lot.

Efficient, nice to use, good cosmetics

Written By SubMasterT, Canada on Tuesday, November 06, 2007

I picked up this sub, though it was last year's model with different styling. I normally buy higher end subs, so this was a test to check out the value of this class of product and the relative efficiency for a low powered amp. I was disappointed with the foam surround and a large plastic cover over the actual magnet to make it appear to have a huge magnet, but the push type binding posts was a very nice touch. I think the more subdued styling of this year's model would be preferable to me. My other sub experiences are with Clarion, MTX, Polk and JL Audio.

Driving it with a 150W RMS MTX ThunderPro 7502 amp, and I swapped it into a .88 cu ft box of mine with minimal dacron inside and wasn't very happy with the sound. It was efficient, but it sounded loose and not very clean. After stuffing it > 50% with poly fiberfill it sounds much better. You can still hear the power limitations, but it is a very efficient sub vs the Polk db12 I usually run in the box.

Don't try to use this sub in too small of a box without a lot of stuffing, and if you aren't turned off by the lower end materials used in this sub it will flatter a lower powered amp and thump pretty nicely for the money. Audiophiles would probably be rec'd to try a P2 as a starting point.

I purchased these subs due to price and the reputation of Rockford Fosgate products. Let me be the first to say ,I'm not disappointed. They take with ease 420watts RMS from my KickerZX 700.5 and slam. They are installed in a "sealed" 1.0 cubic ft. box. They sound great when listening to any type of music. Crutchfield continues to sell excellent products and provide great details and specs.

Product Research

Enclosure Compatibility

Woofer: The cone is constructed of high modulus, thermoformed polypropylene with a parabolic injected molded ABS/Acrylic dustcap. Polypropylene is lightweight and strong, giving the woofer high power handling and low distortion.

High Density Poly-Foam Surround: A high density compressed half-roll sealed poly-foam surround allows Punch woofers to produce a more linear excursion resulting in more bass output.

Parabolic Injection Molded Dustcap: By bonding a ABS/Acrylic parabolic dust cap of equivalent size to the cone body, a balanced geometrical structure is created. This system reduces piston flex and eliminates cone distortion.

Linear Spider: A compliant linear spider made from tear and fatigue resistant poly-cotton improves mechanical stability under high excursion, maintaining consistent excursion characteristics. This eliminates the need for a "break-in period." The spider rests in a vented spider cavity to reduce heat build.

High Temp Voice Coil: The woofer uses an aluminum 1.5" 6-layer voice coil with a spun-laced Nomex insulating reinforcement collar which offers superior heat dissipation over other commonly used materials. The hard-anodized finish increases the former's strength. These factors combine to improve the overall power handling characteristics of the subwoofer.

Optimized Motor Magnetics: The Punch woofer uses an extended pole piece and bumped backplate design to optimize its performance.

Basket: The Rockford Punch woofer features a sturdy 16-gauge geometrical, compound bend frame for added stability.

Spring Post Assembly: The woofer features a custom insulated/isolated compression input terminal assembly with attached flexible, stitched tinsel lead wires that can withstand extreme duty cycles, fatigue and high current. The heavy-duty 10-gauge nickel spring posts will accept pin connectors and bare wire.

Decorative Ring: For an added decorative look the woofer comes supplied with a PVC decorative ring that mounts over the flange of the woofer. When using the PVC ring the woofer is first mounted into place with four screws and then the ring is set on top the woofer, aligning the final four holes of the woofer with ring. The other four screws are used for these holes to mount the ring and woofer to the enclosure. The decorative ring increases the mounting height of the woofer to 0.799".

Reverse Mounting: The Rockford Punch woofer can be mounted in either direction. The mounting ring that is supplied with the woofer provides and easy and cosmetically finished look regardless of the mounting direction.

Enclosure Compatibility

Recommended Sealed Box Volume: The sealed box sizes recommended by Rockford Fosgate range from 0.70 cu/ft to 1.80 cu/ft. Within this range, the ideal size recommended by Rockford Fosgate is 1.02 cu/ft, so this is the enclosure recommended by Crutchfield.

Recommended Vented Box Volume: The vented box size recommended by Rockford Fosgate is 1.79 cu/ft, so this is the enclosure recommended by Crutchfield. One 3" diameter x 6" long port should be used with the 1.79 cu/ft enclosure.
