What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

I was disappointed with this purchase. I got it for my wifes 2001 Toyota Avalon as the sub-woofer split on the OEM and Toyota wants $250 to replace. Maybe the old adage applies here. You get what you pay for. The specs are very close to OEM but the sound is half what I want.

Cons: mounting holes did not line up. Sound quality is poor.

I used this sub to replace the factory RF sub in my 2011 Nissan Juke and I'm very happy with the results. I have it hooked up to the sub channel on my Alpine PDX-5 giving it about 300 watts and there is no clipping or distortion. The sound is very punchy and somewhat low. You can feel it in the seats, and more importantly hear it. As long as you don't expect it to sound like a 12" sub, you'll be very pleased!

Pros: It worked perfectly in my 2011 Juke using the factory enclosure!

Cons: My first impression of the materials used to build the sub left a little to be desired, but you have to remember that this is an entry level sub woofer. The build quality on the other hand is very good. The only thing I don't care for is that it's made in China.

'96 Ford Explorer Sport, two Rockford Fosgate P1S48's

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have two of these subs in a ported box powered by a Rockford Fosgate Prime R300-4 amplifier, bridged to provide the subs the recommended 150 watts RMS each. These two 8" subs provide plenty of good base at a great value and have a small enough footprint, even in a ported box, to be able to still use the back of the vehicle for carrying other items. The base is strong enough from these subs to feel in your back, and adequately compliment my component listening speakers.

I ordered a pair of these for my single cab Silverado. They fit perfectly behind the seat and sounded ok. After 2 years though one has developed a nice rip along the outer edge.

Definitely an entry level sub

I bought this for my son and his laptop/I Pod. It has crisp clear sound and with a
teenager....yes a lot of base. It will distort a little if it cranks up too loud, though a good
bang for the buck.

Written By David, Tampa, FL on Monday, December 27, 2010

As another reviewer here has done...I put two of these in .25 sealed boxes and they fit
perfectly under the back seats of my 2009 F150 supercab. A single JVC 300w RMS
class D mono amp runs these at 2 ohms and it sounds great!!! The lows are there and
it sounds perfect. It is the perfect balance between good sound and not being pulled
over for being obnoxious.

Great Little Sub

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this as a replacement for my stock sub in my Tiburon. I reused the factory
enclosure and powered the sub by a JVC KS-AX3002 amp I also purchased from
Crutchfield. This sub sounds great in a small sealed box. I was surprised by how well
the sub hit the lows. Definitely not going to set off any car alarms or be heard a mile
away but it has plenty of low end bass for me.

it is less than half turned up!

I bought this speaker as a replacement for my factory sub woofer in a 2001 Suburban. Because of the depth of this speaker I had to add a piece of 3/4" plywood to the factory box to mount it to. I'm impressed with the sound.

A great way to upgrade your (vehicle) stereo system

Written By Robert35904, Gadsden, Al on Tuesday, April 06, 2010

Thank you Crutchfield,

I honestly have to say that these 8 in. subwoofers, which I bought two, went beyond my expectations and erased any preconceived notion that their small size would lack the good monster bass I was searching for. (Subs were just part of order I made - amp and radio also came from Crutchfield)

I now realize that with the good advice of a gentlemen at the Crutchfield's help line, that a great sounding system does NOT have to break the bank.

My advice to anyone reading this comment is to look for the sales here at Crutchfield and feel free to call to ask any question you might have about a set-up your thinking about building. Their help line is truuely helpful...

I have one of these subs hooked up @ 150rms in a .65cuft slot port enclosure @42.7hz I built for my 96 firebird, with the slot and sub facing the back of the car. I was surprised at how well this thing performed, its loud (for what it is) and clear. I also built a sealed enclosure thats .23cuft @ 150rms for my dads 88 chevy single cab pickup facing forward, not as loud as my set up (thats a given though) but its very good for what it is. I am very happy with these woofers, I would def recommend them if you have limited space.

Big bass in small space

Written By mcutri, Southern California on Friday, January 29, 2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had very limited space in a large vehicle in which to build a box. Basically a wide, shallow box with an internal volume of .74ft3 and a max height of 9 inches. I shopped around and found these 8's that are shallow and work in a very small enclosure.

I went with three of these in a sealed enclosure, facing into the rear seats of my SUV, wired in parallel to 1.33 ohms and powered by a 1 ohm stable mono amp rated at 450 watts at 1 ohm. The subs are likely getting about 125W each. I crossed them over at 60Hz, anything higher and I could hear music coming from the back. I let my 6.5 components handle everything over 80Hz and the front stage is preserved nicely.

The system rocks with all types of music. About the only music that has let me down is one of those SPL competition bass tracks, which is far from what I listen to every day. Rock, jazz, house, rap all sound great. I don't boom down the street but these get plenty loud in the vehicle. Couldn't be happier with the results for such a small sacrifice of space.

Solid Bass...

Written By Anonymous, Lafayette, La. on Tuesday, January 26, 2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought 2 of these to put under the back seat of my 2005 Colorado CrewCab. For the Box I utilized scrap wood from my work shop. A mix of 5/8" plywood for the bottom, 2x4 for a center divider, solid 1" thick shelving for the sides and solid ¾" thick shelving for the top. Each chamber is .25cu/ft, (outside box dimensions are 31½ L x 11¼ D x 4½ H with no poly fill). Because of clearance issues I first installed them without the rubber magnet covers. They sound good, but not quite right, so I re-worked the inner bottom of the box (just like with professional made sub enclosures) to allow ¼" more depth for the magnet cover. Worked perfect, without making new adjustments to my amp there was a tremendous difference, bass is very tight and accurate, all the way to max volume. Amazing sound. These subs exceeded my expectations, especially considering I'm using a stock HU and a sub amp. Awesome product at a great price.

Nice little kick

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced the stock sub-woof in the back of a 97 Expedition. Even with just a standard amp, it puts out a nice little kick with little distortion. Without a larger amp, it does not rattle the windows, but then again it does not make it impossible to have a conversation. Very nice indeed. Installation was a bear, but that is was not due to the speaker.....The stock subwoof is bolted in from the back, not just with the standard side screws.

Perfect Sub

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had a big Ported box for Two 8" subs with old Pioneers that were falling apart already and needed to be replaced. I got the Crutchfield deal of "Buy one, get one free" for these babies, and all I have to say is WOW! Day and night difference from the old school subs, and a bad sound.

I have a Lexus IS250 which already has Sound Proof walls in the Trunk, but that doesn't stop the subs from being heard not only inside the car but outside, including some rattle too. nothing that cannot be fixed with some Dynamat ;)

Just make sure to have the correct box size and type. Crutchfield has lots of info on it, but Rockford Fosgate has a full detailed explanation for each type of box for each speaker model so you want to check it out before you buy the subs. For tight base with precise sound definition use a Sealed Box. For loud boom use a Ported Box. Correct dimensions are given in their website. I would have gone for Sealed, but I had already the box, just had to fix the Port Length to match the Subs Specs with the Box dimensions. You will also need Grilles to protect them as they are not included with the Subs.

As far as my system, I have stock everything in the Lexus, just added an Amp (2x 200 Watts) and the two Subs to the stock Lexus Sub. It makes a big BIG difference.

I paid this much for the Subs, but it sounds like a $7,000 system. lol

Never owned any subs other than JL Audio, these days its all about value. Nice sub for bottom end fill. I bought two and only used one in my Cherokee w/ my own custom box at .27ft3 sounds awsome. Was really impressed, would recomend this sub for anyone looking for fill, not waking the neighbors.

Best 8" subs on the market!!!!!!!!!!!!

Written By Anonymous, Ray in Columbus, GA on Sunday, September 13, 2009

I bought one of these on this website during a buy one get one special. I planned on having just one in my Ext Cab F150 under the seat. With that special, I put two of these in two seperate custom made sealed boxes. They are both under my back seat in about .23 cubic feet (manufacture recommended) of free space. They hit hard as anything. When I have people in my truck and they hear and feel the two 8"s they do not believe me until I show them. My subs are being a little under powered @ 120 watts rms each, but they can easily handle more. Even with the 120 watts each, they hit hard!!!!!!!!!!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Rockford Fosgate makes a great 8" sub. Don't be fooled into thinking you have to have a 10 or 12" sub to have hard hitting bass! I bought one of these and built a ported box for it. Hooked it up to an Alpine MRP-F300 (bridged the rear channels and run the single 8" with about 150 watts) and it hits incredibly hard inside the car. Adjusting the amps gain (@ 1/2) to the front Polk speakers and running the gain really low (@ 1/4) on the sub... it sounds incredible. Turn the gain up on the sub and friends will NOT believe it is just an little ol 8"! I built a simple ported box using RF's specs they provide in the owners manual. Great product.

WOW! These little subs are great! I have a 98 Ford Contour SVT and I bought this sub... Well Im only running one right now with the rockford fosgate 2 channel amp putting out 150 RMS bridged. It is great, realistic bass... You get the most realistic bass with 8 inch subwoofers, so I have been told.. I wanted something that wasn't gonna weigh my car down a whole lot and these are perfect.. I might get another box, a more powerful amp and run the other one down the road.. I am very pleased!

I did a lot of researching before I bought these and I am glad I did. Don't think twice about this subwoofer!

I bought a pair of these 8's for my extended cab F-150. Space is an issue, so I built 2 separate boxes that fit under my back seat. They are mated with a 500w RF Punch amp. The sound is amazing for these small and inexpensive subs.

I was hesitant to buy such a small sub, but I had a box for 2 8's that fit perfect where I needed it. I hooked it all up using a 150x2 RMS amp and .3CF per chamber enclosure. These things sound incredible, not just the punchy sound I was expecting, but they get plenty low as well.

I Bought 4 of these, put em in a sealed enclosure at 0.27 ft³. They Sound great though i made my boxes just a bit to big... At 0.27 ft³ they respond very well to ~120Hz, but at higher frequencies (~200Hz) the sound quality drops considerably. I am going to remake my boxes to 0.20 ft³, then im sure these 8's will sound much better at the frequency range i wanted to use them at. GREAT PRICE!!!

I bought a set of Rockford Fosgate P1S48Punch Stage 1 8" 4-ohm subwoofers. I have a Jeep Wrangler 2000 so space is kinda a issue.

I all ready had a box with some old 1993 paper woffers in it. They were being powered by an old Punch 40 amp.

I installed the new woofers and it has been night and day differance.

The sound is asome and for that price I could not believe it. I am following the break in directions and cant wait to turn them up .

i bought 2 of these subs to install in a hummer H3. i was not sure about which subs to buy because i had no experience with 8"subs and didnt know what to look for. two of these with RMS to each sounds really good. very clear with punchy bass (uh its a punch series) they can sound great at a low bass setting but when turned up can produce some awesome bass for 8's. its not for you if you want deep bass which you probably dont or else you wouldnt be looking at this sub. P.S. Great Deal Crutchfield!

Enclosure Compatibility

Woofer: The cone is constructed of high modulus, thermoformed polypropylene with a parabolic injected molded ABS/Acrylic dustcap. Polypropylene is lightweight and strong, giving the woofer high power handling and low distortion.

High Density Poly-Foam Surround: A high density compressed half-roll sealed poly-foam surround allows Punch woofers to produce a more linear excursion resulting in more bass output.

Parabolic Injection Molded Dustcap: By bonding a ABS/Acrylic parabolic dust cap of equivalent size to the cone body, a balanced geometrical structure is created. This system reduces piston flex and eliminates cone distortion.

Linear Spider: A compliant linear spider made from tear and fatigue resistant poly-cotton improves mechanical stability under high excursion, maintaining consistent excursion characteristics. This eliminates the need for a "break-in period." The spider rests in a vented spider cavity to reduce heat build.

High Temp Voice Coil:  The woofer uses an aluminum 1.5" 6-layer voice coil with a spun-laced Nomex insulating reinforcement collar which offers superior heat dissipation over other commonly used materials. The hard-anodized finish increases the former's strength. These factors combine to improve the overall power handling characteristics of the subwoofer.

Optimized Motor Magnetics: The Punch woofer uses an extended pole piece and bumped backplate design to optimize its performance.

Basket: The Rockford Punch woofer features a sturdy 16-gauge geometrical, compound bend frame for added stability.

Spring Post Assembly: The woofer features a custom insulated/isolated compression input terminal assembly with attached flexible, stitched tinsel lead wires that can withstand extreme duty cycles, fatigue and high current. The heavy-duty 10-gauge nickel spring posts will accept pin connectors and bare wire.

Decorative Ring: For an added decorative look the woofer comes supplied with a PVC decorative ring that mounts over the flange of the woofer. When using the PVC ring the woofer is first mounted into place with four screws and then the ring is set on top the woofer, aligning the final four holes of the woofer with ring. The other four screws are used for these holes to mount the ring and woofer to the enclosure. The decorative ring increases the mounting height of the woofer to 0.688".

Reverse Mounting: The Rockford Punch woofer can be mounted in either direction. The mounting ring that is supplied with the woofer provides and easy and cosmetically finished look regardless of the mounting direction.

Enclosure Compatibility

Recommended Sealed Box Volume: The sealed box sizes recommended by Rockford Fosgate range from 0.20 cu/ft to 0.30 cu/ft. Within this range, the ideal size recommended by Rockford Fosgate is 0.23 cu/ft, so this is the enclosure recommended by Crutchfield.

Recommended Vented Box Volume: The vented box size recommended by Rockford Fosgate is 0.65 cu/ft, so this is the enclosure recommended by Crutchfield. One 2" diameter x 6" long port should be used with the 0.65 cu/ft enclosure.
