Our take on the Rockford Fosgate Punch P2002

by Tim Sprinkle
Rockford Fosgate

My system has plenty of power. Who needs an amp?

You might think you don't need an amp because you have a 400-watt system in your car, or because your new stereo puts out 50 watts a channel. But those are peak wattage ratings, which may boil down to 15 or 20 watts per channel, using the more realistic RMS rating. An amp sends your speakers the power they need to deliver your music with clarity and impact, whether you're using factory speakers or high-performance components. And low-frequency reproduction requires lots of power, so an amp is an absolute must if you're adding a sub to your system.

Don't let your sound system dance around the ring; fire up a Punch series amplifier from Rockford Fosgate and enjoy a knockout performance every time! These amps will sting your speakers with plenty of clean power, while serving up the sound-shaping controls and high-quality components you need to create a heavyweight audio system.

The Punch P2002 slams your speakers with 50 watts x 2 at 4 ohms (200 watts x 1 in bridged mode), to deliver the high-end musical performance you demand. With its clean circuit design, MOSFET power, and proprietary technology, a Punch amp can bring out extraordinary detail in your music, driving your speakers with strength you just can't get from an in-dash receiver — or a lesser amp.

And great sound takes more than just power; you need command over every aspect of your gear. The P2002 has you covered with built-in high- and low-pass crossovers — you can tailor your music any way you like it. And, since you never have to ask your speakers or subs to play notes they're not designed to handle, you can get more SPL without worrying about distortion. And, for those times when you really need to pound, kick in the Punch Bass for a big helping of bass boost.

Features

Removable Chrome Covers: The Rockford Fosgate Punch P2002 amplifier features dual removable chrome covers. One of the covers conceals all speaker, signal, remote, power and ground connections, as well as the gain and crossover frequency controls for a cleaner installation.

Cast Aluminum Heatsink: The cast aluminum heatsink dissipates heat generated by the amplifier's circuitry. The inherent advantage of casting provides a 30% improvement of cooling over conventional extrusion heatsink designs.

MEHSA (Maximum Efficiency Heat Sink Application): MEHSA is a Rockford Fosgate proprietary process that increases the heat transfer from the MOSFET devices to the heatsink. The multi-layer insulated metal MEHSA substrate operates with minimal thermal resistance, spreading heat both downward and outward to quickly dissipate heat from each device across the heatsink. This allows greater power output, enhanced thermal stability, and maximum reliability.

TOPAZ (Tracking Operation Pre-Amplifier Zone): TOPAZ is a circuit that simply eliminates noise. The TOPAZ circuit allows the amplifier ground to move with the source unit ground, creating a "noise elimination" zone just before the preamp section. If there is any noise in the ground coming down the RCA line to the amplifier, TOPAZ amazingly tracks it down and eliminates it. The result is a 30-40dB improvement of the isolation between input ground and chassis ground.

Trans-ANA (TRANSconductance Active Nodal Amplifier): Trans-ANA is a circuit that allows the audio signal to pass through the amplifier at low voltage. The signal is directly level-shifted to the fixed high voltage rails via a pair of drive transistors. Signal linearity is assured by an active node formed  by the drive transistors at ultrasonic frequencies. The result is crystal clear sound quality.

NOMAD (NOn-Multiplying Advanced Decision): NOMAD is an intelligent protection circuit that uses an analog computer to make real time decisions regarding temperature, voltage, current and impedance. The unit is protected without limiting sound output unless needed.

DSM (Discrete Surface Mount): In the manufacturing process high speed robotics are used to place 0% tolerance resistors and large board traces providing greater reliability and efficiency.

TO-247 MOSFET: The Punch P2002 utilizes ultra high performance MOSFET output devices, giving the amplifier more power handling capability as well as lower thermal impedance for more reliable operation, even under the harshest load conditions.

Internal Crossover: The amplifier's internal crossover is a 12dB/octave Butterworth filter selectable for high-pass, all-pass (full range) or low-pass operation variable from 40Hz to 400Hz.

RCA Pass-Thru Jacks: The pass-thru jacks provide a convenient source for daisy-chaining an additional amplifier without running an extra set of RCA cables from the front of the vehicle to the amplifier location. The pass-thru jacks output a full-range signal.

Power Indicator and Protection LEDs: The RF logo, located on the top left of the amplifier, illuminates when the unit is turned on. The "Swirl" portion of the logo illuminates with the output signal level. A yellow "Protect" LED, located next to the RF logo, illuminates if a short circuit or too low of an impedance is detected at the speaker connections. Another yellow LED, labeled "Thermal", illuminates if the amplifier overheats. The amplifier will automatically shut down if either of the two LEDs indicate amplifier trouble.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

Power Connections: The power and ground terminals are nickel-plated captive c-clamp wire connectors and will accommodate up to 4-gauge wire. The remote turn-on terminal will accept wire sizes of 12- to 24-gauge. A Phillips-head or slotted screwdriver (not supplied) is required to tighten/loosen the terminals.

Speaker Connections: The 2-channel nickel-plated clamp wire connectors will accept wire sizes of 8- to 18-gauge. A Phillips-head or slotted screwdriver (not supplied) is required to tighten/loosen the terminals.

Specifications

CEA-2006 Compliance: The specifications given by Rockford Fosgate for the Punch P2002 amplifier comply with the new CEA-2006 Amplifier Power Standard from the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association). All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CEA-2006 logo on their product.

Performance Verification Certificate: Each amplifier comes with a Performance Verification Certificate which lists the results of a 10-point performance inspection as well as measure the actual power output. The actual amplifier reviewed by Crutchfield produced 64 watts RMS per channel at 4 ohms, and 258 total watts at 2 ohms. The amplifier is rated at 50 watts RMS per channel at 4 ohms and 200 total watts at 2 ohms.

Mighty Mouse

Written By matt, Manassass, VA on Sunday, May 07, 2006

About 2 months ago my subwoofers, box and amp were stolen from my car, and unfortunately at the time I was flat broke. I went to Best Buy after a few weeks of saving up enough just for a replacement, and I bought the cheapest package deal they had. I wasn't expecting any of the new pieces to be of great quality, I had just missed the bass so much I had to get it back. My old subs were Rockfords, so I trusted that this amp would be at least mediocre, and luckily I was somehow able to upgrade the subs in the package deal from 2 10" 300W Rockford subs to 2 12" 1300W Sony XPlod subs, and a box to fit.

When I finally got around to installing the setup, it was extremely easy to install, because the wires had already been run to the trunk, so all I really had to do was plug and play. The amp had all the hook-ups clearly labelled and it took me all of 30 seconds to do. Once I fired it up, I was blown away. That tiny little amp was putting out more than I could have imagined. I had been a little disappointed that I had settled for such a small amp, but this was proving to be much better than old amp I had, which had about 50 watts up on the rockford. I would highly recommend this amp to anybody who's looking for a cheap, reliable, and strong amp, I am very satisfied with it.

Wow!!

Written By Herb, Ft. Sill, OK on Saturday, March 25, 2006

I put this and a Rockford sup in my reg cab truck and I am impressed, even with the small space and all. I use to run a 1000 watt amp on two twelves from some cheap company and this amp and a single sub blows them away. I am hooked on Rockford Fosgate from now on. Trust me this amp puts out more than 50 watts by two at 4 ohms. I bridged mine and hooked it up to a single rockford sub and am loving it. Buy it if you want great sounding bass for a little money.

I am stuck on Rocford amps. They are still the best. Where else can you get 84 watts per channel out of an amp rated at only 50 per. And the sound clarity is just amazing. My little miata sounds like a concert hall. Thanx again Rockford.

Awesome amp

Written By Luther, Houston on Friday, March 17, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Using this amp to power Infiniti 6810cfs component speakers in the front doors of a 96 Nissan Quest mini-van. Head unit is an Alpine 9856. Also have two Infiniti 6812s in the back of the van powered by the Alpine unit.

PLENTY of power for the application, and the amp delivers the goods. Advertised 50watt RMS, tests out to 85 watts RMS (per channel).

Installed it under the passenger seat - fits, but it's a shame to hide such a great looking amp - the chrome is a nice finish.

Sound of this system is phenominal - clarity, detail, feel, intense presence - whether listening to rock, jazz, classical, fusion, country, funk, pop (uh... no rap here...)

Gain control has nice range - mine is turned up 5/8 of max. This amp is very affordable, and delivers everything you'll need to a quality setup. never had heard of Rockford Fosgate before - but I certainly know now! I'll be buying another next time I do a system...

Nice Amp

This amp does a great job pushing my Kenwood 12" sub. I love Rockford's because they underrate their amps.

Great amp for the price.

This amp is great for being one of the lowest on the rockford scale..the only problem is that if the protect light comes on your pretty much screwed unless u have a warrenty..so do yourself a favor and dont do what i did and tap the the negative and positive speaker wires together(it was an accident). overall this amp is grea. itll be good to you if you take care of it.
