Once again, Rockford Fosgate steps away from the crowd with their C.L.E.A.N. technology (Calibrated Level Eliminates Audible Noise) — a setup system that ensures your music will sound as clean and powerful as possible. It works like this: first download the setup tones from Rockford Fosgate, then play the tone, adjust the receiver volume until a red clip light on the amp goes out, then turn the amp gain up until a blue light comes on. It's that simple — your amplifier will be perfectly set to match your receiver's output. When your receiver reaches maximum clean volume, you'll get maximum clean power from your Power amp. At quiet listening levels, you'll hear less background noise and more of your music.

Keeps an eye on things while playing

If that blue light turns solid red while you're playing music, the amp's telling you that your source is distorting and you should turn it down, or risk damage to your gear. The optional PLC2 remote level control also doubles as a clip indicator, so you can see from the front seat if your music's clipping. The amp's built-in computer keeps tabs on the output current, ensuring that plunging speaker impedances (they change during play) or even a short circuit won't hurt anything.

Maintaining coolness raises efficiency and lowers distortion

Rockford Fosgate's Dynamic Thermal Management system uses forced air to dissipate heat evenly across the amp and out through the high-mass heatsink, efficiently drawing heat away from vital internal parts. Their proprietary MEHSA cooling process maximizes the heat transfer from the MOSFET devices to the heatsink, allowing the heat to escape more readily, so the transistors stay cooler and work better.

CEA-2006 Compliant: CEA-2006 is a system of testing and measurement methods for mobile audio amplifiers. This voluntary standard advocates a uniform method for measuring an amplifier's RMS power output and signal-to-noise ratio. The criteria for measuring power uses a DC input voltage of 14.4 volts and the RMS power output is measured with 1% or less Total Harmonic Distortion plus noise (THD+N) over a frequency range of 20 Hz to 20 kHz (for full range amplifiers). Signal-to-Noise ratio is measured in weighted absolute decibels (dBA) at a reference of 1 watt into 4Ω. CEA-2006 allows consumers to compare car amplifiers and receivers on an equal basis. Using CEA-2006 criteria, the Rockford Fosgate P300X1 is rated as follows:

  • Power Output:
    • 4Ω: 200 watts x 1-channel
    • 2Ω: 300 watts x 1-channel
  • Signal to Noise Ratio: 85 dBA (105 dB at rated power)

Cast Aluminum Heatsink: The cast aluminum heatsink dissipates heat generated by the amplifier's circuitry. The inherent advantage of casting provides a 30% cooling improvement over conventional extrusion heatsink designs.

Dynamic Thermal Management (DTM): DTM evenly distributes excess heat across the amplifier's entire heatsink.

MEHSA³ (Maximum Efficiency Heat Sink Application-3rd Generation): MEHSA is a Rockford Fosgate proprietary process that increases the heat transfer from the MOSFET devices to the heatsink. The multi-layer insulated metal MEHSA substrate operates with minimal thermal resistance, spreading heat both downward and outward to quickly dissipate heat from each device across the heatsink. This allows greater power output, enhanced thermal stability, and maximum reliability.

Trans-ANA (TRANSconductance Active Nodal Amplifier): Trans-ANA is a circuit that allows the audio signal to pass through the amplifier at low voltage. The signal is directly level-shifted to the fixed high voltage rails via a pair of drive transistors. Signal linearity is assured by an active node formed by the drive transistors at ultrasonic frequencies. The result is crystal clear sound quality.

NOMAD (NOn-Multiplying Advanced Decision): NOMAD is an intelligent protection circuit that uses an analog computer to make real time decisions regarding temperature, voltage, current and impedance. The amplifier is protected without limiting sound output unless needed.

DSM (Discrete Surface Mount): High speed robotics are used in the manufacturing process to place 1% tolerance parts and large board traces. DSM improves the efficiency of the circuit, decreases cross-talk from other discrete components and lowers operating temperature.

CLEAN Set-Up: Rockford's integrated level setting technology, CLEAN (Calibrated Level Eliminates Audible Noise), replaces sophisticated test equipment with input/output clip LEDs, allowing you to match the source unit's output to the amp's gain, and optimize the amp's output. The input clip indicator works in conjunction with the audio source volume, illuminating red when the source reaches it's clipping point. The output clip indicator works in conjunction with the input level dial on the amp, illuminating the appropriate color depending on the audio content used for the setup.

Power and Protection LEDs: The LEDs are located on top of the amplifier. A blue Power LED illuminates when the amplifier is turned on. A red Thermal LED illuminates if the amplifier overheats. The yellow Protect LED illuminates if a short circuit or too low an impedance is detected at the speaker connections. When any of the protection circuits engage, the amp automatically shuts down until the problem is corrected.

Balanced Differential Inputs: Differential inputs eliminate noise picked up by signal cables by measuring the voltage of both the (+) and (-) input signal, then subtracting the voltage common to both conductors (noise), resulting in only the clean signal entering the amplifier.

Controls

Input Level: To accommodate the varying range of signal levels from today's factory and aftermarket radios, the input level is adjustable from 150mV to 12V.

Crossover: The amplifier's internal crossover has a 12 dB/octave slope. It can be set to high-pass, all-pass (full range), or low-pass operation and the crossover point is variable from 50 Hz to 250 Hz.

Punch EQ: Punch EQ works along with the crossover switch. When the crossover is set to low-pass, the Punch EQ acts as a variable bass boost; 0-18 dB at 45 Hz. When the crossover is set to high-pass, the Punch EQ acts as variable treble boost, 0-14 dB at 12.5 kHz. When the crossover is set to all-pass, both the bass and treble boost circuits are active.

Connections

Power Connections: The power and ground terminals are nickel-plated captive c-clamp wire connectors and will accommodate up to 4-gauge wire. An external 50-amp fuse (not included) must be installed on the power wire. The remote turn-on terminal will accept up to 12-gauge wire. A Phillips or flat-head screwdriver (not supplied) is required to tighten/loosen the terminals.

Speaker Connections: The two speaker outputs are internally wired in parallel, making it easy to connect two subwoofers. The speaker terminals are also nickel-plated captive c-clamps and will accept up to 8-gauge wire. A Phillips or flat-head screwdriver (not supplied) is required to tighten/loosen the terminals.

Signal Input: The RCA inputs will accept either a line-level or speaker-level input. A speaker-level signal can be connected using a Speaker Wire to RCA adapter (sold separately). When using a speaker-level input signal, the auto turn-on feature is active and the remote turn-on terminal becomes a 12 volt output to turn on/off up to two additional amplifiers or other components.

Line Level Output: The amplifier has a pair of RCA line level pass-thru outputs to feed another amplifier. The pass-thru output is passive (the same signal present at the amp's input) and the amp's crossover has no effect on the signal.

Punch Level Control (PLC): An RJ-45 jack is provided for connecting an optional wired remote PLC2 (item number 575PLC2, sold separately), allowing remote control of the output level of the amplifier. A second RJ-45 jack is the PLC output, used to daisy-chain additional amplifiers controlled by a single remote.

Note: Previous model PEQ, Punch Bass, and Para-Punch remotes will not work with this amp.

Q
Will this amp pair well with two kicker comp rt 6 3/4 sub truck style boxes, Kicker 48TCWRT672?
brian  Dec 10, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Brian. Thank you for your question. If you are planning on two of the Kicker boxes, each are at 2 ohms, and two would, be either wired to 1 ohm, or 4 ohms. This Rockford amp is not 1Ohm stable, so two of the Kicker subs would have to be wired to 4 ohms. This amp will put out 200 watts at 4 ohms. Optimum, you would want your amp to put out 300 watts. Please contact one of our advisors at 800-324-9695 for a better option.

Q
Will it push P3 15?
robertlee  Jan 31, 2023
1 answer
A
With the Rockford Fosgate P3D2-15 you may want to use a more powerful amp, Robert. Something that provides near the 600-watts RMS the Rockford can handle would be a better performer. I suggest using the Rockford Fosgate R2-750X1 Prime amp in the first link below, paired with the PSD4-15 in the second link. This would provide a little over 500-watts RMS (Rockford's amps are known for being over performers from the ratings) and be a great pair with the 15" subwoofer. https://www.crutchfield.com/p_575R2750X1/Rockford-Fosgate-R2-750X1.html https://www.crutchfield.com/p_575P3D415/Rockford-Fosgate-P3D4-15.html

Q
Can I use this amp on my mids and highs?
relentless  Oct 10, 2020
3 answers
A
Unfortunately this is a single channel amp. Meaning that it is for a subwoofer. You may still be able to wire two speakers to it, but that is just so you can run two subs. You can tell by the 300X1. I'd you want to put more power to your speakers you should look for something that says 300X2 Or even 150X4 I hope this helps you. Good luck.
john  Oct 12, 2020
A
No, this is a subwoofer amp. You'd need either a 2 or 4 channel amp depending on your setup.
jonathan  Oct 11, 2020
A
This is a mono, single channel amp intended for subwooofers. I suppose you could run 2 of them in the full range no cross over setting with one for each channel. I would suggest looking at either one of the 2 channel or 4 channel amps in the Rockford Fosgate Power or Punch series. Hope that helps.

Q
If this has speaker level inputs, i dont have to buy a LOC (LC2i) ?? to run this amp for my factory head unit?

Carlos, I got one for my 2013 Honda Accord factory head unit and it sounds a lot better with it. You don't have to invest in an expensive one, I only spent about $40 on mine. I hope this will help you.

You should ask a Crutch field tech that question. Tell them your year, make, model car and they will know if your system is amplified. In addition,. I think some radios can be adapted to rca, not sure but I think. Call Crutchfield tech.

Q
So, by just using the speaker level input instead of an LOC, I wont need to run a remote wire?
david  Dec 29, 2018
2 answers
A
That is correct! If you use a speaker-level input signal, the auto turn-on feature is active which will turn on this amp without needing a remote turn-on wire connected to it. My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/bio/Paul

According to Rockford Fosgate it's not necessary but I ran the line anyway for peace of mind. The wire is small enough to tuck into panels and run without any headaches. But either way, I'm sure you will be happy.

I run three of these. I was confused here also. I called tech support. I run a second positive 12 volt wire to the remote input. and phono jacks for the audio inputs. works well. I am not using them in a car. I suspect the remote in a car may come from the ignition switch. That way car turns on amp turns on.with out running high current thru ignition wires. Im not a car guy. You could try an audio input to remote it only looks for electricity to trigger. But what is happening to that audio? don't short the amp output. CALL SUPPORT.

Q
I am curious about temperature of unit in use. I have a Rockford P300-1 and it never feels more than warm, even in the summer. It looks to be very similar to this amp except it is not class D like the P300-1 is. It is class AB. I don't expect an audible difference being used for sub woofer. Does it run hot under normal conditions and used properly? I have used AB amps in past and always seemed to be hot when used and worked hard for normal sub use and heat is never good for electronics. Not too efficient if it converts energy to heat so readily. Have they changed? Maybe play it safe and go class D here?

I have one driving a 300 watt sub. I've never had a problem, but I've only had it a few months. One good thing is here is a thermal protection circuit in this unit. If it gets too hot, it shuts down. Good luck.
charles  Feb 23, 2015

It's a very dependable amp it always runs cool under pressure from hard pounding subs. It has a light on it that will let you know if it is close to overload or distortion protection . Plus if you get the bass knob for this model it too has a light that does the same thing so you can have your amp in your trunk or out of sight and monitor your bass knob in stead because they work in sink of one another. I hope you choose this amp you will love it too.
david w  Feb 23, 2015

It does get pretty warm... after installing this AB unit- it actually fried a couple days later. Go with the class D. My much older RF amps still push fine and this "new" one is a paper weight now. Not impressed and do not recommend purchasing this amp.
