About the Rockford Fosgate P3D2-15

Jo Greene

Standout performance

Rockford Fosgate showcases their fanatical commitment to sonic excellence in the Punch Series of speakers, amps, and subs. If you like to listen to potent, powerful music — and feel it too — Punch components will give you impressive sound that'll stand out in a crowd.

Exploded view

Designed for deeper, louder bass

Rockford Fosgate designed the P3D2-15 15" subwoofer to stay strong even when the bass gets hot. This Punch P3 sub features a rigid anodized aluminum cone that holds its shape through heavy play, while staying light and responsive. Rockford Fosgate uses a new technique to attach the oversized rubber surround to the cone that increases available cone area up to 25%, so this sub can push more air for even bigger bass.

Heat-sink cone

The aluminum cone acts as a giant heat sink, directing heat away from the copper-clad aluminum voice coils. Special venting keeps the voice coils cool, so you get incredibly consistent bass performance over time. This P3 sub features an extended pole piece and bumped backplate that leaves more room for heavy excursion, so it'll hit deeper lows without "bottoming out."

The dual 2-ohm voice coils allow you to wire the sub for 1-ohm impedance to get maximum power output, or for 4-ohm impedance if you're using multiple subs. The P3D2-15 sub works equally well in a sealed or ported enclosure, so you can choose the kind of bass you want for your system.

Product Research

Features
Enclosure Compatibility

Features

Overview: The Rockford Fosgate Punch P3D2-15 is a 15-inch subwoofer with dual 2Ω voice coils. The sub features a hybrid StampCast basket, quick-release compression terminals, anodized aluminum cone, and Santoprene surround. An anodized aluminum voice coil former and spider venting help keep the subwoofer cool.

Dual 2Ω Voice Coils: The dual 2Ω voice coils offer wiring flexibility; when wired in parallel the woofer presents a 1Ω load, when wired in series the woofer presents a 4Ω load.

Compression Terminals: The P3D2-15 features spring post terminals which accommodate speaker wire up to 10 gauge.

CEA-2031 Compliant: Power handling on the P3D2-15 subwoofer conforms to CEA-2031 industry standards. This means the subwoofer has the capacity to handle power under continuous demand, not instantaneous power handling, that over time, can damage voice coils.

FlexFit Basket: The Flex Fit frame utilizes slots (where possible) instead of single screw sized holes; allowing slight adjustment of the speaker when mounted.

Trim Ring: To improve the cosmetic look, a decorative trim ring is included that mounts over the flange of the woofer. When using the cast aluminum trim ring the woofer is first mounted with four screws, then the ring is placed on top of the woofer, aligning the final four holes of the woofer with ring. The other four screws are used for these holes to mount the ring and woofer to the enclosure. Without the trim ring the mounting height of the woofer is just under an inch, with the trim ring it's approximately 1-1/16 inches. The diameter of the trim ring is approximately 16-3/8 inches.

Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box: Rockford recommends a sealed enclosure with an optimum internal volume of 1.58 cubic feet (from 1.5 to 3.0 cubic feet is acceptable). Sealed enclosures provide the most control over a woofer, will handle a lot of power, and provide accurate sonic reproduction, making them suitable to all types of music.

Ported Box: Rockford recommends a ported enclosure with an internal volume of 2.66 cubic feet using one 4" diameter x 10" long port; this yields a tuning frequency of 32 Hz. Ported (or vented) enclosures typically provide better overall efficiency than sealed so they are suitable for use with smaller amplifiers, giving you more bass output from less power. However, this efficiency comes at the expense of very low frequency output (below 30 Hz).

Q
I want to put 6 of the 15s in my 4Runner. What would be a good box size for sealed and would 2 kicker 1800.1 amp work if I do 3 subs down to 1.33 ohms per amp?
jacob  May 25, 2023
1 answer
A
I support six 15"s with two thumbs way up, Jacob. This would be a complicated custom setup, with little to no instructions available. You can wire three each of these subs to show 1.3 ohms, but impedance is fickle and could go lower when in use damaging your amps. I would wire them like in the first link below to show 3-ohms at your amp for good long-term reliability. The T2500-1 in the second link is a beast and would put out roughly the 1800-watt RMS number we want to match with 3 subs at a 3-ohm load, one amp per 3 subwoofers. These subs work great in sealed boxes anywhere from 1.5-3.0 cubes, so you have plenty of flexibility with your box building. This is our kind of setup here at Crutchfield, playing the song of our people! https://images.crutchfieldonline.com/ca/learningcenter/car/subwoofer_wiring/3DVC_2-ohm_mono.jpg https://www.crutchfield.com/p_57525001CP/Rockford-Fosgate-T2500-1bdCP.html

What amp should I buy for my Rockford Fosgate P3D2-15" sub??

A
That is a great question! If you wanted to stick with Rockford Fosgate then the Punch P500X1bd would be a good match with your sub wired in parallel which I will link down below. If you have any other questions or want to look at other amps we have experts available at 800.324.9695 that can track down the perfect unit so please give us a call! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_575P500X1B/Rockford-Fosgate-Punch-P500X1bd.html?tp=35834

Q
I have a single P3D2-15 in a 2.6sq ft vented box running on a kicker CX1200.1 amp wired at 4 ohm. The Sub sounds great but I want more out of it any suggestions? Itâ??s in an Infinity QX80.

A
Great question. Since you already have your subwoofer pretty perfectly matched with power, you could consider moving to a sealed box to give it more impact. You could potentially consider using a line driver with your amplifier to boost the voltage if it's below 4 volts. You are more than welcome to give us a call at 800.324.9695 to speak with one of our advisors to further discuss your options.

Q
Will the punch 1000x 1 ohm amp work better with a single punch P3 15 2 ohm or two punch 15 inch subs?
kelii  Apr 29, 2020

A
Yes it will perform great seeing that it's just a single 15 subwoofer.

If you are talking about the P1000X1bd model amp, it can work with one or two of the P3D4-15 DVC 4 ohm subs. I do not recommend this amp for the DVC 2 ohm version of the subwoofer. If you are referring to a different modal amp, I recommend contacting an advisor on 1-800-324-9695 to get a personal recommendation on a setup

Yes it will. I have a old punch 1000db on a single p3 15 dual 2 ohm sub. Sounds awesome and the amps turned down! They only need around 500 watts rms. So it such do fine either way.

Sealed
rusty  Apr 29, 2020

Rockford recommends a sealed enclosure with an optimum internal volume of 1.58 cubic feet for a single 15" P3D2 subwoofer; when using two you can simply double that number which comes out to 3.16 cubic feet total volume for dual subs. If you would like to discuss further, feel free to contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. Thanks! My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/advisors/larry
