Exploded view

Designed for deeper, louder bass

Rockford Fosgate designed the P3D4-15 15" subwoofer to stay strong even when the bass gets hot. This Punch P3 sub features a rigid anodized aluminum cone that holds its shape through heavy play, while staying light and responsive. Rockford Fosgate uses a new technique to attach the oversized rubber surround to the cone that increases available cone area up to 25%, so this sub can push more air for even bigger bass.

Heat-sink cone

The aluminum cone acts as a giant heat sink, directing heat away from the copper-clad aluminum voice coils. Special venting keeps the voice coils cool, so you get incredibly consistent bass performance over time. This P3 sub features an extended pole piece and bumped backplate that leaves more room for heavy excursion, so it'll hit deeper lows without "bottoming out."

The dual 4-ohm voice coils allow you to wire the sub for 2-ohm impedance to get maximum power output, or for 8-ohm impedance if you're using multiple subs. The P3D4-15 sub works equally well in a sealed or ported enclosure, so you can choose the kind of bass you want for your system.

Product Research

Features
Enclosure Compatibility

Features

Overview: The Rockford Fosgate Punch P3D4-15 is a 15-inch subwoofer with dual 4Ω voice coils. The sub features a hybrid StampCast basket, quick-release compression terminals, anodized aluminum cone, and Santoprene surround. An anodized aluminum voice coil former and spider venting help keep the subwoofer cool.

Dual 4Ω Voice Coils: The dual 4Ω voice coils offer wiring flexibility; when wired in parallel the woofer presents a 2Ω load, when wired in series the woofer presents an 8Ω load.

Compression Terminals: The P3D4-15 features spring post terminals which accommodate speaker wire up to 10 gauge.

CEA-2031 Compliant: Power handling on the P3D4-15 subwoofer conforms to CEA-2031 industry standards. This means the subwoofer has the capacity to handle power under continuous demand, not instantaneous power handling, that over time, can damage voice coils.

FlexFit Basket: The Flex Fit frame utilizes slots (where possible) instead of single screw sized holes; allowing slight adjustment of the speaker when mounted.

Trim Ring: To improve the cosmetic look, a decorative trim ring is included that mounts over the flange of the woofer. When using the cast aluminum trim ring the woofer is first mounted with four screws, then the ring is placed on top of the woofer, aligning the final four holes of the woofer with ring. The other four screws are used for these holes to mount the ring and woofer to the enclosure. Without the trim ring the mounting height of the woofer is just under an inch, with the trim ring it's approximately 1-1/16 inches. The diameter of the trim ring is approximately 16-3/8 inches.

Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box: Rockford recommends a sealed enclosure with an optimum internal volume of 1.58 cubic feet (from 1.5 to 3.0 cubic feet is acceptable). Sealed enclosures provide the most control over a woofer, will handle a lot of power, and provide accurate sonic reproduction, making them suitable to all types of music.

Ported Box: Rockford recommends a ported enclosure with an internal volume of 2.66 cubic feet using one 4" diameter x 10" long port; this yields a tuning frequency of 32 Hz. Ported (or vented) enclosures typically provide better overall efficiency than sealed so they are suitable for use with smaller amplifiers, giving you more bass output from less power. However, this efficiency comes at the expense of very low frequency output (below 30 Hz).

Q
Can I build a bandpass box with this speaker?

Hi Nathan, thank you for your question. Rockford Fosgate does recommend using only a sealed or ported enclosure for this particular subwoofer, and the manufacturer does recommend that if you are not going to use one of the recommended enclosures, to consult technical support to confirm correct application guidelines. If you have purchased or plan to purchase this subwoofer from Crutchfield, you may contact technical support during your installation.

You can use a bandpass box with any speaker, but I wouldn't recommend it with this one. With a quality amp, this sub will make all the low end bass you could ask for, all the way down to infrasonic frequencies.
shane  Apr 23, 2020
A
Absolutely. These speakers will love it.

Q
if a 15'' sub is 2.66 and box is 3.64 what will that do to the sounds?
thomas  Sep 17, 2018
1 answer
A
Won't really affect sound. More air to move. Just make sure your subsonic filter is set just under the box tuning.box is tuned around 35-36hz.The sub itself will take up some space. Honestly if your looking at purchasing these two together I say go for it! You will not regret it. I have that box with a kicker comp r 15 and love it! I did a review on the box if you wanna check that out, Amazing box for a prefab!

Q
It says the idea sealed box volume is 1.58 cubic feet ...if I build a box to exactly that volume and then put this huge speaker in it the volume will be drastically reduced ... so dose the box volume include the volume lost by the speaker volume ???

After further research I found out that Rockford Fosgate gives you dimensions to build a "idea" box for this Sub. The dimensions they give is 18x21x10 witch is outside dimensions ... using 3/4" MDF would yield 16.5x19.5x8.5 inside dimensions witch would give you 1.58 cubic feet of volume... so Shawn gave the correct answer ... Rockford Fosgate dose take into consideration the volume of their Sub when they say the "IDEA" box size is 1.58 cubic feet...Of course you can build your box to what ever size you want as long as the inside dimension is 1.58 cubic feet and of course the sub. fits in it...
david  Apr 04, 2017
A
It would be reduced. I don't have the manual for these in front of me but I do remember that it included volume figures for the speaker so you would be able to construct your enclosure to the correct dimensions.
bill  Apr 04, 2017
A
The dimensions provided from Rockford are taking speaker volume into consideration, Make sure you use 3/4" medium density fiberboard.
shawn  Apr 04, 2017
A
No. The volume of the box does not include the space of the sub. If you bought it new, the owners manual tells you the displacement size of the sub. Then add that to your blueprints for the build.

Q
Will these speakers work is it minor scratches?
robert  Mar 13, 2016
1 answer
A
If you are asking about our Scratch and Dent stock then yes. Scratch and Dent items have very minor cosmetic defects that would not affect the operation of the item. Everything still comes with our 60 day guarantee and manufacturers warranty. Hope that helps.
