Our take on the Rockford Fosgate P3SD2-12

by John Pollard
Rockford Fosgate

What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Rockford's bass pedigree

Rockford Fosgate's Punch Stage 3 subwoofers come from a long line of high-performance subs that deliver real deal bass. Now, shallow-mount Punch Stage 3 subwoofers make it easier to get impressive low end in smaller or hard-to-fit vehicles.

Advanced engineering

The P3SD2-12 shallow-mount 12" sub hangs with its bigger brethren, thanks to advanced materials and engineering. Rockford uses an anodized aluminum cone and dust cap that makes the woofer light and easier to drive, yet rigid enough to maintain its shape when you turn it up loud. The M-Roll Santoprene™ surround also provides excellent excursion for maximum output while being durable enough to last.

Powerful bass for a tight space

A low-profile frame houses the sub, with abundant venting to battle overheating and thermal breakdown. At 3-11/16 inches deep, this sub will fit into places where no bass has gone before — just build a custom enclosure or find a suitable box. The dual 2-ohm voice coils allow you to wire up multiple subs or to coax optimum performance from your amplifier.

To drive this single subwoofer, we recommend a mono amplifier rated between 300 and 600 watts RMS at 4 ohms. For more information, please refer to our article on How to Match Subwoofers and Amplifiers.

Features
Enclosure Compatibility

Features

Shallow Mount Design: The Rockford Fosgate Punch P3SD series shallow subwoofers are designed and engineered with a more shallow motor assembly which reduces the overall depth of the woofer, allowing it to fit in smaller locations in your vehicle. The P3SD2-12 used an anodized aluminum cone and Santoprene surround. An anodized aluminum voice coil former and spider venting help keep the subwoofer cool.

Dual Voice Coils: This woofer features dual 2-ohm voice coils for wiring flexibility. When the voice coils are wired in parallel, the woofer presents a 1-ohm load. When the voice coils are wired in series, the woofer presents a 4-ohm load.

CEA-2031 Compliant: Power handling on the P3SD2-12 subwoofer conforms to CEA-2031 industry standards. This means the subwoofer has the capacity to handle power under continuous demand, not instantaneous power handling, that over time, can damage voice coils.

FlexFit Basket: The Flex Fit frame utilizes slots (where possible) instead of single screw sized holes; allowing slight adjustment of the speaker when mounted.

VAST Surround: The Vertical Attach Surround Technique (VAST) increases a speaker's effective radiating cone area without increasing the size of the basket.

Anodized Aluminum Voice Coil Former: Aluminum voice coil formers offer superior heat dissipation over other commonly used materials. The hard-anodized finish increases the former strength. These two factors combine to improve the overall power handling characteristics of the subwoofer.

Spring Post Assemblies: The woofer features custom insulated/isolated compression input terminals with attached flexible, 16-gauge stitched tinsel lead wires that can withstand extreme duty cycles, fatigue and high current. The heavy-duty spring posts will accept pin connectors, single banana plugs, and bare wire up to 10-gauge.

Trim Ring: For added cosmetic appeal the woofer comes with an aluminum trim ring that mounts over the flange of the woofer. When using the trim ring, the woofer is first mounted with four screws, then the ring is mounted over the woofer, aligning the final four holes of the woofer with ring. The other four screws are used in these holes to mount the ring and woofer to the enclosure. The trim ring increases the top-mounting height of the woofer to approximately one inch and the ring diameter is 13-3/8 inches.

Break-In Period: Due to the design of the Rockford Fosgate P3 Shallow subwoofer, a 24 to 48 hour break-in period is required to allow for maximum excursion and low frequency extension. The shallow woofer suspension is intentionally designed to optimize once the internal components are exercised under normal music listening conditions.

Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box Volume: The sealed box size range recommended by Rockford Fosgate is 0.60 to 1.20 cubic feet. Within this range, the ideal recommended size is 1.0 cubic feet, resulting in a 3dB down point of 40 Hz and a Qtc of 1.01.

Vented Box Volume: The vented box size recommended by Rockford Fosgate is 1.25 cubic feet. One 4" diameter x 12" long port should be used, resulting in a tuning frequency of 42.5 Hz and a 3dB down point of 34 Hz.

Good Sub !

Written By L, MIami ,ok on Saturday, February 01, 2014

Let me start by saying i went through many subs to get what i finally wanted , first i bought 2 kicker comp 10's and pre fab truck boxes and they just didnt cut it , so i went up to some kicker cvt shallow mounts and put 450 watts to each of them and they hit hard just didnt have any low end at all , then i built a box and gave them some more room and they improved a little but still wasnt right , and this is in my 85 chevy truck so not much room , in my 86 mustang i have 3 mtx 12's and they hit hard and low and i was looking for that tho i knew with very little room i wouldnt get the same sound , so i bought a set of these and put them in that same box i built for the 10's and i have to say i finally found what i was looking for deep and punchy bass , i listen to a lot of rock and some rap every now and then and these play both very nice , i have a Kenwood Kac-9105D running them @ 2 ohms and they really sound great together , but what people dont realize is the size and build of the box makes a whole lot of difference , the box i built i was able to get 1 cubic ft to each sub , if i was to put them in say a .5 cf box they would not sound near as good im sure , the 2 kicker cvt 10's i bought were in factory kicker boxes that were insanely small like .3 cf and the sub states that it needs like .8 at least or something so they did sound pretty good when i put them in the box o made but being 10's they just couldnt handle the lows at all ,these do very well !!!
Pros:
Sound ,freq , build
Cons:
I dont really care for the cone on these but who looks at them behind my seat lol

Put two of these in a custom sealed box at 1cubic foot of air space in a 2005 regular cab ford ranger hit so hard you could barely see driving I was so impressed so much bass could come from such a small package had them wired into a 1 ohm load with 1000 watts rms on them I know there only rated for 400 rms but after I broke them in they handled every bit of 1k also you have no idea how many people wanted to know where my subs where hiding... if I ever needed a sub for a small location or enclosure there is no doubt I would by these bad boys

If you are looking for heavy base this is not a good buy. Good if you just want some good quality quiet bass.
